It’s good news that you’ve found something else to keep the black dog at bay, I had a similar experience when I retired, I thought when I was working I was just occasionally a miserable bugger, but it turns out I have cyclothymia (or bi-polar lite as it’s sometimes called). I have found that keeping my zinc levels up helps with the extremes of the mood swings and that it also helps keep colds at bay is an extra bonus. Anyway, that backstory aside, I was struck by your comment about being shite at some of your new pastimes because I read this just the other day from the genius that is Kurt Vonnegut: ”When I was 15, I spent a month working on an archeological dig. I was talking to one of the archeologists one day during our lunch break and he asked those kinds of “getting to know you” questions you ask young people: Do you play sports? What’s your favorite subject? And I told him, no I don’t play any sports. I do theater, I’m in choir, I play the violin and piano, I used to take art classes. And he went WOW. That’s amazing! And I said, “Oh no, but I’m not any good at ANY of them.” And he said something then that I will never forget and which absolutely blew my mind because no one had ever said anything like it to me before: “I don’t think being good at things is the point of doing them. I think you’ve got all these wonderful experiences with different skills, and that all teaches you things and makes you an interesting person, no matter how well you do them.” And that honestly changed my life. Because I went from a failure, someone who hadn’t been talented enough at anything to excel, to someone who did things because I enjoyed them. I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.” I hope that helps a bit.13 points

Six months into (premature) retirement and two weeks into lockdown 2 I found myself running out of things to do and also drifting towards depression. I had given myself five things to do - bass practice, sax prax, getting better at watercolour portraits, riding bicycles and writing my maiden novel. The trouble is I am irredeemably shite at the first three things, it's winter, and the novel will never happen - and it's miserable being made aware of this (again). Realising depression is not a good place to go, I took stock and realised that one way of putting off re-realisation of the shite threshold is to pretend I'm starting from scratch. So today I dusted off the Ed Friedland walking bass course, Scott Devine's technique accelerator course and started Scott Paddock's excellent sax course right from the start. So far so good. I am posting this primarily as a motivational pressure on myself to avoid back sliding. YMMV.7 points

But he isn't though is he? You can't really turn on the telly without seing farage and his bunch of right wing nutjobs moaning about their free speech being curtailed. The president of america has been spouting right wing conspiracy theories heavily for the last 4 years, don't see his free speech going anywhere, or the whole news organisations set up to pander to that world view. If anything, there is more right wing free speech than left wing free speech these days. Even the bbc isn't allowed to come up with an opinion without having to add 'but some people think it is reasonable to drown immigrants in the channel' too to balance it out.7 points

Due to advancing age and lack of gigs here is my "as new" Sadowsky Metroline 5 in aged white/cream. Purchased used from The Bass Gallery by me in January 2019. (listed in their "sold" items). Briefly the specs are:- Fingerboard, rosewood; Body, alder; Frets 22; Nut 1 7/8 inches; Spacing at bridge, 19mm; Scale, 34 inches; Pickups, Sadowsky; Preamp, Sadowsky 2 band; Weight 8.5 lbs; Controls, volume, pan, active/passive/tone and stacked treble/bass. Will come in an almost new Hiscox case (as in pictures) OR I have an almost new Reunion Blues soft, but highly padded case if you fancy that (cost twice the price of the Hiscox). I have looked in detail and cannot find any blemishes worth photographing. A few light scratches on the pickguard, and I mean light. A beautiful bass. No trade offers please, and the price is fixed. UK sales only please. Sorry, I don't have any sound clips, although there are plenty on Youtube.6 points

Absolutely. Being ancient, I remember when one could hear quite a wide variety of political views via the mainstream media. Not any more. We have lurched markedly to the right in recent years and anything to the left of the Lib Dems is openly described as "communism" and/or heresy. The far right has always exploited the fact that they are (rightly) forbidden to say some things (drowning asylum seekers, etc) by claiming it to be an "assault on free speech". The sad thing is that more appear to believe their nonsense nowadays.6 points

Tokai JB45 in candy apple red with matching headstock and neck which I believe dates back to 1983/84 To the best of my knowledge it is all original and even comes with the Tokai gigbag (albeit with a hole in the bottom ! Conditional is remarkable for an instrument of this age. I can only see 2 tiny marks on the body and have tried to show these in photos It’s strung with a new set of Ernie Ball coated 45 - 105 roundwounds and was recently set up by Beej Guitars in Leeds Bass weighs in at 9 lbs 6oz Currently collection from Wakefield only or I can meet you within a reasonable distance. Trade value is £575 - cash price now £495 straight sale is preferred to put towards a Dingwall but I might look at trading for another Jazz like a MIJ 62 reissue or a Limelight with cash adjustment4 points

Hi there, today i went to Adrian. Kind Regards from him to you all 🙋♂️...We've had a nice Talk and I've had the opportunity to choose a flamed Maple top for my Joker Bass. Pic 1 is made by me a few Hours ago. On Pic 2 wich is from Adrian, you can see the Woodgrain better.4 points

I don't know GR gear, but IMO the SM would be a good first step to the best rig you've owned. I have the SM and an SC. They each sound great and together bring the house down. I'll use both as a full range rig for my active Jazz bass, but, as a stand alone cab, I prefer the SC (more low end and slightly less top end). Sounds perfect with my passive P bass. All BF cabs are punchy and well defined.4 points

I think the op just misread the forum. I'd like to welcome @[email protected] There is a thread where folk introduce themselves. Why not just pop over there and tell us a bit about yourself, and we can all start again.3 points

The band I was part of in the early 80s had an actual 808 drum machine (at the time when it was cutting edge and expensive) and we spent most of out time trying not the make the bass drum sound like that.3 points

While reading. (gloating) about his removal from the label, it stated that he is still going to release his cover of the Jam's, That's Entertainment. I hope to never hear that.3 points

You can get an indication of whether lightweight tuners would work, without spending money upfront, by removing one or two of the existing tuners and see if the balance of the bass improves. If it does, work out the weight of the tuners still remaining on the bass. That is the total amount that four new lightweight tuners must not weigh more than.3 points

If you spot any great BF deals - let us know! On the other hand if you see any blatant pre BF price bumps to make it just look like they're offering reductions - feel free to call them out. Here's one. Normal price £399, but you can currently get a HX Stomp for a bargain basement £539 from these guys... https://www.dawsons.co.uk/207797/line-6-helix-hx-stomp-multi-effects-processor-amp-modeller2 points

I've used Essex Amp Repairs a couple of times and, tbh, wasn't that pleased with what they did. I can say the same for some repairs they have recently done on a couple of amps I know of that clearly had faults they were unable or reluctant to spend time identifying. I would unhesitatingly recommend Electronic Music Services They sorted out my Mesa Boogie prodigy 4:88 when it blew a fuse and took half the pcb with it. Cost me an arm and a leg, mind you, but that wasn't their fault. But recently I have become more acquainted with a chap called Leighton Jennings and he is now my go-to guy for everything. He is a one man band working out of his garage, makes guitars and amps, repairs them, top bloke. Also vintage record players! Both are nearer than Witham, too!2 points

Well done for pulling yourself up by the boot straps and starting this thread to keep you going. I know all too well how difficult it is to motivate yourself to do anything when the black dog is biting.2 points

Great to have those 5 targets. I think the most liberating this is to stop caring if you are 'good' or not (and how can you decide that anyway) and just enjoy the process of learning and doing. Keep going and stay well.2 points

Some people get lower latencies, but they're rare. A lot of people seem to operate without too much effort at around 40ms, so with 30 you're fine and you'll hardly notice it. My most recently jam was with someone in Minnesota and someone in St Petersburg with a few of us in the middle in the UK. That's not common - most people can't deal with those latencies, but the American guy is a master at it and the Russian is used to it now! I'll post the video when we've played our online gig.2 points

What about something different ? a 10" + compressor ( Celestion), wedge 350w .Only 9kg......Made by Scott Dixon from aircraft aluminum ....its very stiff & air tight to military spec so the vent works correctly I helped design and test (I have no financial interest) I have been using for 5 months in covid safe rehearsals and it has been awesome. Its tight full & loud, compact and my back is delighted....the band love it, I also have the 12" version but pref' the 10". As you can see in the pic's it can be wedge or straight. Hope it helps.2 points

I used BF cabs for 10 years, had 6 of them, great cabs. My final pair was 2xone10's. I tried the GRBass aerotec 2x10 and it handles more power and goes louder then the 2xOne10's. BF farts out sooner on low B. I have since bought 2 GR bass cabs, a 210 and 112. Very happy so far. You should certainly try out these cabs, they also do a 2x8...now at Bass Direct2 points

Cab and BF cover both in A1 condition with no dings/scrapes or Tolex peel. This 'S' version is switchable between 4 and 12 ohms and spec'd at 600W, though Alex at BF says they're good for 800 clean watts. I've gigged it in a rock covers band at 4ohms with an Eden WT550 Traveler and 12ohms with a Mesa Subway D800+ - both plenty loud enough for me! Collection only or happy to meet anywhere within a half-hour drive from J25 M5 when covid rules allow.2 points

Morrissey: Please, please, please let me get what I want BMG: You are a charming man and a handsome devil, but money changes everything, so we have to drop you now. Morrissey: May I ask, how soon is now? BMG: That joke isn't funny anymore. Morrissey: Well I wonder, what difference does It make? I don’t own you anything! BMG: Bigmouth strikes again. Don’t panic, you’ve got everything now. Morrissey: Ok, I know it’s over. 😎2 points

Cliff is the man for me. He is such a modest guy but plays exactly what is needed for the song, which for me is what bass playing is all about.2 points
