  1. For the past couple of years, I'd been looking for a lightweight 5 string bass. My current 5 string is a little on the heavy side for 3 hour gigs where I often dance about like a prat. I've been mostly just sticking to my 4 string 'P', weighing in at 4kg and tuning down when required. Overwhelmed by internet research, I popped in to Guitar Guitar on Saturday to actually try some and get an idea what I wanted to buy. I was expecting to find something like a Spector to my liking, and to make the purchase down the line a little. I've got a steady enough income that I don't need to scrimp on something substandard, but dropping four figures on a bass isn't my top priority at the moment. I browsed the bass department - which was a little less well stocked than my last visit - and nothing jumped out at me. I was on my way to the exit, when a sales guy offered assistance. I explained what I was after, and he convinced me to try a £370 Ibanez SR305. I seen it when browsing, but didn't even consider it - a 5 string costing so little couldn't be up to the job. I immediately noticed it was very light, and I was blown away with the quality of it. Active preamp, nice sounding dual humbuckers with a coil tap - very versatile. A really slim neck with no high or sharp frets. Well set up too - intonation bang on, just enough neck relief and action only a tiny bit higher than I'd have liked. (In contrast to the Fender Vintera I bought a couple of years ago, which wasn't set up at all and had to spend hours on it) Anyway, I left the shop with the bass. I had it at a rehearsal last night, and I was very happy with it. I'll need to tweak the pickup height a little to balance the volume across the strings, and maybe tweak the action - but other than that it's good to go. I've not weighed it yet, but it's a similar weight to my Strat - around 3.6kg. I've learned a valuable lesson! George

  2. The odd one out in the BB range, the 1500A is a JJ 'super jazz' which features noiseless stacked single coils. It is 9V active-only, with a tone switch with two non-standard options (typically mid scoop and mid boost) which can be preset from the circuit board to define mid frequency and gain. Controls are Volume, Blend, Tone preset, Treble boost, Bass boost. Long scale, weight 4.2kg

  3. All true. One of my favourite gigging bases is my Harley Benton short-scale P bass. £79, brand new. Any snide comments from band members about whether I could afford a ‘better’ instrument is met with “it would have been a waste of money playing with you.”

  4. Kay reissue of the short scale (31.25") model famously played by Howlin' Wolf bass player, Andrew “Blueblood” McMahon. Excellent condition. Very light and thumpy and with cool white art deco (?) case. In exact same condition as when I bought it from @kristo nearly a year ago as the Americana band/project it was bought for never came to fruition (common BC story ....). Prefer handover in SW London as don't currently have a box. However, willing to post at cost if given time to source something protective enough. Bit cheeky (hope he doesn't mind) but the picture is one of Kristo's (as alluded to, its not left my house or been used since I acquired it so is in exact same condition) and I attach his FS link with other pics. kvrcatalogmodern.pdf

  5. Indeed. I'm a placid guy too and dislike confrontation, but it really winds me up when a complete stranger dares to make snide comments about my gear. I'm the one with the gig. If you're so great, why are you here watching me play on a Saturday night when you could be gigging yourself?

  7. Fender Player Mustang Bass, bought new at the end of May 2023 and has been used for two gigs since then. It has not been touched since last July. I bought it in the hope that the shorter scale would make it possible for me to continue to play despite the onset of osteoarthritis in my fretting hand. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. Condition is perfect/as-new with the original strings and no sign of wear or tear on the body, neck, or frets. The scratch plate still has the plastic protective covering on it. It is a versatile bass with Precision and Jazz bass pickups. I bought a gig bag from Thomas which is a good fit for the Mustang and will include that with the bass. I would prefer the buyer to collect or to meet them at a mutually agreed location. An opportunity to buy an as-new bass for only £500.00

  8. Hey! Alright so, I got my eye on something and this shall be the sacrificial lamb... Been using this for a while and had lots of fun playing it. it's a PJ so nothing crazy. you already know the drill. its stated as made in USA but a few google searches mention in shares some parts made in Mexico... im not sure what the law was in the US at the time where it was okay to state made in the USA depending on the domestic parts - perhaps someone could fill me in. either way it plays and feels just as good as any US fender own. condition wise - quite good for a bass this age; its 27 years old. I used bathroom digital scales and got an estimate weight of 4.1kg but that is a very rough estimate im afraid I took an average of about 6 weigh ins with me holding the bass. Thin Jazz neck. Anodised gold pick guard. I had the frets polished and crowned at my local luthier back in portsmouth a year ago. they are still super shiny! always lemon oiled and well loved after. I gave it a deep clean and took apart the bridge and cleaned that too. also took the neck off to reveal its production date. no major dents or nicks in the finish - but does show signs of use throughout the years as you can see in the photos. The finish on the back of the neck has worn away in places and I have periodically given it a rub down with scotchbrite to smooth over any blemishes and keep the satin feel. (maybe?...) I think the previous owner had it in a conservatory for a few hot summers perhaps as some of the finish around the decals has cracked; other than that it's in great shape. it may need a new tone pot; its working but sometimes cuts out until give it a little wiggle - so for gigging I would give it a look at. could be a simple fix. collection preferred but happy to talk shipping, I would use overland express via UPS as recently did a trade with these guys and everything went smoothly. I recorded a demo of some sounds with some rusty ass playing! but its gives you an idea of its tonal character - its quite a snappy bass.

  9. Well, my daughter is having her swimming lessons now. So I have some doing nothing time to spend at the swimming pool. So I'm glad to announce my HNBD! I didn't really need a new bass. But I thoght this to be a beautiful creation by mr Krysztov Kania. Built in the nineties. Teaser picture is from the original add. More pics to follow tomorrow. It is very light and has one of the thinnest necks I've ever played. Nice balance. Pickup is a Delano with a 3 way switch for some serie/coil split/parallel sounds I guess. Strung with flatwounds. I don't have a clue about the woods. I'll have to contact the builder, maybe he remembers. Fretlines and side dots help me a lot to find my notes (or avoid them). Usually I am not to fond of thin necks, neither on guitar nor on bass. But I think I really can get used to this. It plays light as a feather. It has a nice balance, comfortable body and super high neck acces. Slapping is awkward though with such little space between pickup and fretboard. But I am bad at slapping bass, so it doesn't really bother me. I haven't really gave it a proper sound test, as I only have a 1 watt solid state guitar amp at the moment. Sounds very growly in a nice way through it. I don't think it sounds as deep as my Stagg EUB. The EUB has longer sustain as well. But I do think it is very nice to have a normal bass at my side as well. More pics will follow tomorrow.

  10. Any love for the Modulus Q5-ers on here? I bought mine a few weeks ago and haven't regretted it🙂 For a while I've been on the lookout for a 5 with narrower stringspacing like a Stingray. I marked the Modulus Quantum as very interesting (I like the way these graphite necks seem to respond) a while ago, but the 35" scale gave me doubts. Apparently there are 34" scale Q5 basses around, but I haven't seen them for sale anywhere. Not that they are super common in any form. Anyway, 3 weeks ago a very attractive one (to my taste) popped up on reverb. I ignored my fear of the 35" scale and made a deal with the seller. A week later I had a beautiful second Modulus (my other one is a Funk unlimited) at home. It's a '96 model so it has no trussrod. The neck has just a little relief te accomodate the strings some room for vibration, the action is pretty low. I am very positively surprised about the playability. The only other 35" I've played felt much less compact; it had a larger stringspacing, but probably also other balance. I don't have any trouble with the scale on the Q5 at all. So that's great. Soundwise I like the Q5 very much. I have one with the EMG system. I like it, it's clear and tight, even and dynamic at the same time. The whole bass sounds well balanced from the B to the G string. Some pictures because only text is pretty boring: Anyone else owns or owned one? What are you're thoughts? Pictures are welcome too of course.

  11. I now have two set ups....my live rig and my home rig. Home rig is an iLoud MTM with an ampeg sgt-di and a boss re-2. Sounds awesome, live rig is still the matamp. Really happy with both and having a proper plug and play set up now makes practice more accessible which is cool 😎 Really happy ✌️

  13. No longer a feeler… anyone interested?? Price drop to £1700 plus postage!! NEW TRADE OPTIONS! I could really do with a cash injection at the moment (house renovations costing far more than anticipated!) so if someone fancies trading a bass with a value around the £8-900 mark and can add 1K in cash, that would be a positive outcome! I can now also post if needed- get in touch for details. I am putting up for sale my Musicman Stingray 5 Special in Cruz Teal. It's in amazing condition, with original case and all candy including the plush little bag. I will post pics of this when I can plus a load more - current ones are just a teaser... @Ander87 I thought I would tag you as we had a discussion about this bass previously... It may not be on your radar however.... Anyway, I got this just before Covid and it didn't really see the light of day because of this until the past year and it hasn't done much since then as I seem to favouring Jazz basses at the moment. It is one the first SR5 Specials I believe, from around 2018/2019 (I can confirm this with the serial number), it's light as anything (much lighter than previous SR5s) due to mega light hardware and it balances great, sound like a SR on acid with the 18v preamp and generally is an amazing bass and I know I will regret it if it goes! Will leave the strap and straplocks as the bass came with them. However... So... basically, it has: A mega cool colour (cruz teal - no longer produced) Roasted maple neck and headstock - looks cool and feels great against the ebony board black hardware which I think looks great ebony fingerboard - looks cool against the black hardware 18v preamp with the standard SR5 control setup It's completely stock It has the original case and all the candy to go with it. It also has a plain white scratchplate (the original one) and a mirrored one (see pic) So... partial trades with some cash my way would be possible - I would be interested in a Sadowsky 5 string (japan preferably), or a fender Japan P-bass (70s re-issue with the TV logo headstock) or.... actually I don't know what else but feel free to try me. I'm actually selling as I am trying to buy back a bass I had built back in 2008 which I know is local to me and may be available. If that changes dramatically I may remove this from sale. Collection only I'm afraid - I don't have a lot of free time to drive anywhere so you will have to trek out to the most Easterly part of the UK to bag this bad boy. I just don't fancy sending a 2K bass through the post. I know this will limit things but I just don't want to take the risk. Get in touch if you fancy - come and have a look and try it out - will make you a cuppa and possibly throw in a digestive or two... choccy ones if you prefer.

  14. I'm not in a band or gigging at the moment but looking to get back to it in the next couple of years or so. Being one who has always gone for what pleases me and not given a crap what other bass players / musicians think of me, my abilities or my gear, I'm really looking forward to turning up with a Laney rig, Washburn LP copy + Epiphone Les Paul. I might even add an ancient Zoom multi effects pedal just to really get on peoples tits.

  15. I have heard of Letts but never played one, the bit I don’t get is the reply to Eddie, if I’ve got it right ,he knows he still owes a bass or money, how can you carry on knowing this, if I owed £5 or 5k I would do everything to pay that off, even if it means borrowing from family or friends, it would be on my conscience , he needs to sort this

  16. Had a great one on Tuesday night; my stepfather has been seriously ill in hospital (at one point we were told he was very likely to die on the operating table but being a contrary old sod he's pulled through nicely, just to annoy the medics) and that's been a hard ride. There have also been some unusual band politics via the band's WhatsApp group which had proved to be uncomfortable in the week between rehearsals. It was great, therefore, to arrive, set up, play a couple of old favourites and then work on three new songs (No-one Knows, Rebel Yell and For Whom The Bell Tolls) which went very well, followed by a chat and a brew with my bandmates before heading back in and playing various songs from the set. Just what I needed.

  17. For sale is my lovely acg Krell 4 This bass was specced by Drew at the Great British Bass Lounge and I bought it new from him. It’s in perfect condition and plays like a dream. The body wood is alder with a eucalyptus burl top & headstock facing. The neck is 34” scale and is constructed from maple and mahogany, with a mac ebony fingerboard. The pickups are acg fb and acg pb controlled with an east/acg P-retro preamp and rotary pickup selector. Gotoh tuners and Babicz bridge. This is a beautifully made instrument that just isn’t getting played anymore. Uk shipping can be discussed but local collection would be preferred. Thanks for looking

Regarding the Youtube Videos - if Letts was ACTUALLY sorry for ripping off his customers and actually wanted to set matters right, instead of wasting time creating, editing and uploading YT content, he would go and get a part time job in order to repay his debts. 26. For Sale - Trickfish Bullhead .5k, TF208 and TF112. This really is a fantastic set up. It's lightweight, very portable, very loud, beautifully articulate with plenty of low end and has the best EQ section on an amp I've ever used. I don't want to sell it but I need the money. As soon as I can afford it I'll be buying the exact same set up. Pick up from Newcastle preferred! Inspections welcome at my studio so you can blast it. Cheers!

  27. I just took delivery of my Masterbuilt Alusonic J-Supreme. These are outstanding basses and definitely worth checking out! It has a great modern hifi sound and doesn’t need lots of tweaking with the 3 band eq. You guys have the luxury of going to Bass Direct to check them out, but I took a chance and totally relied on many discussions with Polly the owner of Alusonic to get the custom spec I needed. I’m going to sell my Sadowskys to finance another!

  28. *NOW £1175* 2001 EBMM Sterling in long discontinued and much loved honeyburst with rosewood fretboard. Will entertain trades involving an American Standard/American Professional Precision Bass (rosewood fretboard preferred) or Short Scale StingRay (preferably EBMM). The bass is in great condition for its age, though there are some scuffs and marks commensurate with two decades of use. Weight currently unknown but I would estimate a shade over 4kg; certainly not heavy by EBMM standards thanks to the small body which isn’t much bigger than a Mustang’s. Appreciate that weight can be a dealbreaker for some (myself included) so I will endeavour to get an accurate figure ASAP (i.e. when my neighbour gets home so I can borrow their scales). *EDIT* Weight confirmed as 4.2kg according to luggage scales. I have the original white pickguard and screws which can be reinstalled before sale. The electrical tape on the pickup can also be removed - rest assured it’s hiding nothing more than some sharp pole pieces, but I’m happy to take some more photos of the bass in original condition if required. Also included is the original hard case which, admittedly, is in less good condition than the bass itself (see photo of missing clasp) but still provides adequate protection. Collection from Haywards Heath, West Sussex preferred, but I would be happy to deliver or meet within a reasonable distance. Any questions, requests for additional photos etc, just let me know!

  39. These days, with the proliferation of CNC machines and whatnot, there are very few completely terrible guitars and bass brands around. Where not so long ago the likes of Squier, Ephphone, SBMM, etc. might once have only been considered beginner instruments, you could quite happily have one and gig it regularly - Mike Rutherford using Squier Affinity guitars live is a good example of someone not fussed by the brand name (although his are modded somewhat, I'm sure). When I bought my Squier Precision in 1998 I actually chose it over a Mexican Fender Jazz because I thought it was a better put together (and better sounding) instrument even though it was about half the price. As has been mentioned elsewhere, eventually you start getting into the realms of diminishing returns as the price goes up, where each incremental improvement in quality seems to come with a bigger and bigger price hike. The trick is to know how good is going to be good enough for what you need.

  40. Oi, ninja post editor - it's funny, you should have just left it as "boke", because it sounds like the Scots word "boak" which means retch or vomit, often used in the construction "to give one the boak": Oh, that pure gies me the boak! Translation: "That's fkn disgusting!" Ergo, Mr. Letts' business practices give me the boak.

I’m often told I don’t look it but I’m a very, very placid chap, but any snide comments about gear from anyone to anyone at any time grinds my gears sufficiently that I do let it bother me and become something of a mouthy runt. I may or may not have deliberately misspelled that… Annoyed with myself to this day that I didn’t check out one of the Freeman sigs when they were released.

  47. It's maybe time for Mr. Letts to change career. Anecdotally (I have not played any of his instruments - so I'm just going off what I've read/seen) it would seem he's not as good a builder as he clearly thinks he is (by his own words), and he has absolutely torched his reputation. When you are operating in the same space as the likes of ACG, Shuker etc. you'd better make damn sure your product is on point as well as your business practices. With that in mind, speaking as a neutral bystander with no skin in this game, my assessment is that this enterprise is dead in the water.
