  1. A tough decision to sell this but it's proving too heavy (4.3Kg) for use in the band and I don't want it being unused. It's too good to spend its life in a case. My useless back starts acting up after about 30 minutes playing it so it's best to find it a new home. It's been fitted with Fender CS '62 Pickups and KiOgon loom. It sounds great with flats although it's got a new set of 45-105 nickel Elites fitted at the moment. I'll put some flats in the case so you can hear for yourself. Condition it's 'good used' with a few scratches and most notably a dink just above the scratch plate. See pic. Its looking properly vintage with the white Finish looking more cream and the dark rosewood fingerboard. The action goes low, too low for me and the truss rod turns fine. My crap photos don't do it much justice so if anymore are required please ask. The Fender tweed case has seen better days but it dose the job and like the bass, it looks pretty cool. This really is a lovely looking bass and its a wrench to sell but a new lighter bass is incoming that needs paying for. No trade offers please. Can be collected from here in Merseyside and I should be able to post it by next weekend. Can meet up/deliver depending on distance. I don't mind a drive down to Birmingham for example.

  2. Weird gig for me last night, a local football club in a room that was little more than a Spartan concrete rectangle with no decor, that, it seemed, had one purpose only. - For testosterone fuelled men to drink themselves into a blind frenzy and chant about their team. - My idea of actual hell. Also, they appeared (unsurprisingly) to only play oasis for in house music. I was playing as part of an acoustic duo, with a very simple set up (7 minutes to strike the whole kit). Which was nice, cause I couldn’t get out of there quick enough. Everyone was very friendly to us and liked what we did a lot, but, as a person who just doesn’t get that whole ‘ragey, team sport aggressive thing’, I’m just not comfortable being around it. They seemed to have alternate lyrics for every single song about their team or how much they hate another team. Some blokes seemed have their pathetic alpha masculinity threatened by us being the centre of attention and not them , so would try to sing other songs as loudly as possible over the top us - as if they were going to win some self involved volume war against a PA system. - Baffling animalistic behaviour!! Anyway. Rant over, got paid and was back in my own local by 10:30. They want us back, but I’m not keen!

  3. Played two gigs this weekend. First was with my brother in laws Blues band on Friday. His usual bassist was off to play in his other band, who were supporting The Damned down in London. He is usually cajoled to play a bass solo in the set when he plays with the band. I told my brother in law that I definitely wouldn't be treating the audience to any of my random noodling on the night. It was a ticketed gig so made sure I learned the set. Only had one meltdown moment when I missed the cue to go into the middle eight of one of the tunes and things went a bit free form jazz. I brought my Markbass CMD 121 combo and a Barefaced Compact, which was a bit over the top for the venue. So I disconnected the Compact and the Markbass sounded fine on it's own. The second gig was Halloween night at my local music bar on Saturday. They had about 5 bands playing through the day(the venue is open until 3am) and we started at 4pm. I've never played a gig there so early but I was surprised to see that the place filled up and we played to a decent sized audience. They'd done the place up like Alice Coopers living room. See picture of soundcheck below.

  4. A dep gig from hell last night. Playing with a late 50's - early 60's band - I've played with them before and they're pretty OK with the material they do. But last night they had a dep singer, and he was an elderly crooner, who told me proudly that he normally sung at care homes and used " a cassette player with backing tracks" It was appalling. I was already a bit concerned when we did a soundcheck (don't really know why they bothered) and played a bit of 'Blue Suede Shoes' and instead of singing the word 'one' on the first beat of the bar ("Well it's one for the money" etc) he tried to sing with the word "Well" on the first beat of the bar........... It didn't get any better. But in fairness, in some songs he started off in the same key as the band, so that was an occasional bonus. The crowd was fairly well oiled and there was some polite applause after every number, but maybe that was just with sheer relief that the singer had managed to get to the end of the song. At the end, the singer asked for my number as he "could sometimes do with a good bass player" Unfortunately I forgot to give it to him. 🙂 👍

  6. New venue for us last night. Cracking gig. One of those nights when the band was just flying. I used the SVT through two Barefaced 15s and it was glorious.

  8. I've decided to sell this bass and go for something more Precisiony, maybe a Sandberg as an alternative to my vintage P bass. Classic colour combo. I replaced the original guard with something a bit more lively, but the original is included. I also added an aged tug bar just to finish off the look. The original guard has holes for a tug bar, but none were ever fitted from the factory. Comes with non original hard case, which is tatty but functional and all the latches work. It's a lovely thing, plays nicely, with a low action. If you play with a heavier touch you may wish to raise the action a tad. Currently strung with recent La Bella 760FL flats. It's very lightweight at only 3.6kg. Collection preferred or can meet at a reasonable distance. I do have a box I could ship it in, but I don't really want to do that, but we'll see how it goes. Cheers, Rob

  10. Punk gig last night in a bar that used to be my local in 80's. Was an odd atmosphere, quite busy and lots of clapping and whistles after almost every song. Lot of the younger ones were there because they saw us the last time or had "heard the band were brilliant" which was overheard outside at smokers corner. All great but no-one dancing like last time when the floor in front of us had people up almost every song. Most were just watching us play to be fair which is nice. Lots of good comments at the end too. Using the MarloweDK into Handbox WB-100 and Mesa SW 210/115 rig. Dave

  11. I live in Frome, Somerset. There's a great live music scene here. Quite a few little blues, jazz and folk jam groups. There's a pretty lively punk scene kind of lead by Far Cue and Frenzy who have been going decades. We have a good number of bars and pubs with regular live music nights. The local senior school has an awesome music department which is turning out some excellent musicians and putting them on stages infront of good size audiences to get them performance experience. We also have the Cheese & Grain, a venue which has everything from concerts for the local school and local bands to a punk festival and slightly more well known acts such as Airborne, The Stranglers, The Damned, Skindred, Frank Turner, Paul McCartney and Foo Fighters. Not bad for a small Somerset town.

  14. Hi gang Just part-way through Trevor Horn's new autobiog, and it's blummin' marvellous. He's a humble, likeable bloke, and his journey from the pit villages of County Durham to the global pinnacle of polished pop via dancehall bands and Yes is remarkable. There's a reasonable amount of bass content in there too. Well recommended.

  15. You could be describing one of my last pre-lockdown duo gigs, except it was a rugby club. They'd just won their league and you can imagine the state they were in by the time we arrived at 8pm. The club song was Sloop John B, to which there were many and varied lyrics. I think we played it four or five times throughout the night. I was covered in beer - not thrown at me but splashed over me as they jumped up and down. One grabbed my mic to sing but having anticipated it, it was switched off. He then proceeded to fiddle with the catches of my leads case, slurring 'which one is the volume control' at me. I couldn't wait to leave and won't be going back.

  16. Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass HH V, Roasted Maple Fingerboard, Black Pickguard, Gunmetal Metallic. Great 5 string, lots of modern attributes, surprisingly great bass. I am moving to short scale so it is up for sale. BAsically pretty new except for a minor bend in the one machine head. The Squier Contemporary Active Jazz Bass HH V brings modern features and bold aesthetics to an iconic Fender platform to satisfy today’s most discerning and daring players. At the heart of this bass is a pair of Squier SQR ceramic humbucking pickups powered by a Fender-designed active 9-volt preamp, offering intuitive controls for volume, pickup blend, traditional tone and stacked boost controls for bass and treble. The roasted maple neck was chosen for its optimal tone and stability, and a sculpted heel design allows for improved access to the upper frets. High-performance components round out the feature list and include a modern bridge with added mass for improved body resonance, and a set of open-gear tuning machines for smooth tuning action. Eye-catching styling cues include stealthy black hardware and a sleek painted headstock with chrome logos for a premium look.

  18. Ballcocks to criticisms is what I say. If it feels right for you that's all that matters other than keeping in time and staying in tune. Imagine someone telling James Jamerson his playing might benefit if he'd used a couple more fingers . You sound absolutely fine to me and nowt wrong with your right hand action or fretting.

  19. Still people on here not getting compression. My advice, find a local studio thar does sound engineering courses and go to one. You will learn a lot more than arguing on here. Simple answer, bassists know jack about compression, it's definitely sound engineer territory. Learn to be a sound engineer so you can make yourself sound better as bassist in the context of a band.

  20. Oh yeah, sorry I missed the bit where OP said excluding large cities. 🙃 I saw Grace Petrie at Thekla the other night, that's one of my favourite venues. Usually a phenomenal atmosphere in there if it's packed. And it's just very cool to be on a boat.

  24. So it's a jazz but with expensive fixings. Hmm. Seeing as I've never had a problem with the parts on HB basses, nor ever felt the need to change them then it's down to block inlays and the colours. Which of course is more than enough reason for me to buy one.

  25. I'm not in a situation to go amp-free because I have no idea what PA any band I'm in will have, but I have gone to a combo which offers 500W from 9.5kg (that's three furlongs and 25 barleycorns in old money).

  29. Mostly good gig. This was a halloween party about 30 miles away, which is far from us, but the pay was pretty good. hard to find place, but easy to set up while we were there. This was the first gig we had done since the band almost split up, and there is still an undercurrent there. However, we played pretty well all night, and the crowd were friendly and happy. 5 minutes before our alloted time to finish the guitarist decided that was it for him as he had to get home so we didn't get to do an encore which was a shame, he says he is leaving in the new year so better start looking for another one, not bad going I guess as it is the same lineup since 2016. All in all, not too bad though and at least the country roads are quieter at night

  41. Beautiful bass! I've never seen one in this colour before. On the last tour I was on a few months back (I'm a theatre actor) our bass player had a dep covering a couple of performances. He turned up with one of these and I got to hear him play a bit while our sound guy sound checked him - it sounded incredible through our huge touring FOH rig. Clarity, richness, punch. And now I have GAS

  42. Selling my Alleva Coppolo KBP5 Classic in Oly White Specs: Olympic White Nitro Finish with Matching Headstock Indonesian Rosewood board Alleva Pickups, passive circuit Vintage Alleva bridge Tortoise Pickguard Dunlop Straplocks Lollipop Tuners 34" scale, 19 mm spacing at bridge Weight 3820g Build July 2009 Noname case Larger area of dents on the back from belts. Some dings around the body. Jimmys Nitro finishes are not really reliable… But the neck feels great and all playing wear is visible only with a closer look. Technically everything works perfect. The frets are even and have a lot of life left. The action is low and the bass plays exceptionally easy. Typical Fenderish PB sound in a 5er model. This is my last PB model from a huge amount of Allevas I own and owned. It is the best. I simply prefer my JBs. Asking 4200 EUR / 3600 GBP plus shipping from Duesseldorf/Germany

  43. Just got home from my Musical Youth gig at Hootnanny in Brixton and winding down with a cuppa. It went really well the sound quality especially the bass i thought was exceptional, and when I got off stage I had a number of conversations with punters including some who told me they were bass players raving about the gig, complimentary of my playing and the sound of my bass. Always good to hear, and honestly that bass is such an incredible sounding instrument and played through Alembic F-1X/SF-2, power amp and Barefaced cabs is just something else. I think giving the FOH my sound from the post pre-amp signal via the DI worked really well tonight. It is something i have been doing for reggae gigs as my norm unless the sound guys explicitly request otherwise. The team at the venue really took their time to give us a great sound. That is my reggae setup (Picture is from another gig).

  45. Compression is very much a misunderstood concept, you really need to understand compression to get the most from it and to apply it correctly. That cannot be overstated. When done properly it's often invisible, in so far as it's not obvious, although it can be. The subject has been covered many times on BC already so it's worth doing a search if you want to know more, although there is some ongoing misconceptions that keep cropping up. Better still, take a look at sound engineering sites online as you'll get a more objective overview. I've never heard of compression reducing overtones before, I'm not sure that's true. Compression is for controlling the overall waveform as well as signal spikes on the signal, including but not always the transients. As for the guy on YouTube with his acoustic guitar, it sounds like he didn't know what he was doing 🤷‍♂️
