I like Charles. I'm not generally a fan of twinkly-tappy bass solos, but his skill is undeniably astounding and his videos can be amusing. My daughters know who he is as well, without my influence, so if he's inspiring kids to take up bass, well done him. I also love how he gets right up the noses of the more conservative members of our community. If he's winding up the old guard, he's doing something right.8 points

Due to the Covid-19 situation and severe back problems (67% officially disabled because of it) plus right shoulder injury (non-operable capsulitis from which, after more than 3 years, I will never fully recover), I'm selling all my basses over 4 kilos and also the ones I'm not really using as well as some stuff I don't use. I've also considerably lowered the price for a quick sale. 2012 Fender Jazz Bass Jaco Pastorius Tribute Relic (fretless, of course) ! ABSOLUTELY NO TRADES ! NON NEGOTIABLE PRICE ! Asking price including shipping fully insured with tracking number to your place in these European countries (ask for other countries) : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (excluding French overseas departments and territories), Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden : €1550 Euros (£1375 GBP is an approximation and I will only accept payment in Euros) !!! New price is around €3000 Euros, if you can find one... !!! Shipping to United Kingdom is, of course, possible, but with an extra customs fee (VAT + other taxes + courier fee), because U.K. is now outside EEC. In fully working condition and in very good overall condition even if it's been reliced to look like the Custom Shop model. Here are the specifications : Body : select alder Neck : C shape one piece maple (nitrocellulose lacquer) Fingerboard : epoxied Pau Ferro Fretless : 20 postions with side dots and front dots Headstock : 4 in line Pickups : 2 Fender American vintage single coil Jazz Bass Controls : volume, volume, tone Tuners : Fender American Vintage reverse open-gear bass Bridge : Fender 4-saddle American vintage bass Strings spacing at bridge : 20 mm Nut : synthetic bone Strings spacing at nut : 9.5 mm Knobs : Fender knurled flat-top Scale : 34 inches Hardware colour : nickel/chrome Truss rod : one single action vintage-style butt adjust Finish : 3-colour Sunburst (nitrocellulose lacquer) Land of craftsmanship : U.S.A. Serial number : T901957 Year : 07/2012 (checked with Fender Serial Number Lookup) Weight : 4.225 kilos Action : from 1.3 mm under the G string to 1.8 mm under the E string at 12th position (can even go lower, but was perfect for me) Will come with the superb looking and almost brand new original Fender deluxe brown hardshell (gold interior) case, all the goodies and papers. Non-smoking environment as usual. I'm only selling this bass because I'm thinning down the herd for the reasons mentioned above, and I also own a second Jaco fretless... 🤦♂️ The bass has been fully set up professionally. It is fitted with a broken in set of Rotosound RS66LD stainless steel strings (45 - 65 - 80 - 105) that really serve the bass (think Jaco). The bass has been professionally reliced and distressed long ago. What you see is what you get ! Look at the photos taken under different angles to see the real condition, which is used and reliced. I would like to be good enough to play a decent solo, but when the bass drops out of a tune for a solo the bottom drops out of the song. The groove disappears and it makes you realise why we are such a crucial element to a band. To play a great solo and retain the heart of the groove at the same time is going to a level of ability beyond most - best not to bother! Guitarists can widdle away in the knowledge that the rhythm section is still providing the foundation of the song.5 points

Fender MM Nate Mendel Precision Bass & Bag This 2018 bass is in excellent condition and comes with all the original case candy and Foo Fighters spare neck plate. It’s a lovely sounding bass and has subtle wear to it that gives it the look of a genuine early seventies instrument. It is currently strung with Daddarios but a set of old heavy gauge strings are included too. It has the Fender hi-mass bridge. It weighs just over 4kgs and is a nicely balanced instrument. I’d prefer pickup in person but can post in the UK at buyer’s cost if necessary. This is part of my ‘if it’s going to be gathering dust - sell it!’ gear cull. Sorry no trades.4 points

Fun gig last night in the Butchers Arms in Inverurie with my covers band Nine Lives. The landlord wanted us to start an hour later and play until 1.30am to see what effect that had on punter numbers. I think it helped - people are going out later and later - some folk still arrived as we were playing our last few songs - they must have been on a pub crawl because who goes to the pub for half an hour, what's the point? Anyhoo, reasonable crowd who were up for a dance and a singalong, a fairly young crowd so we ditched some of the older rocky stuff and kept it fairly contemporary - save for Bad Moon Rising and Waterloo - they always seem to go down well regardless of the ages of folk! Highlight of the evening - the police came into the pub for a look around just as we were between songs, so in a highly unimaginative but mischevious move we quickly decided to start playing "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest. I'm sure that's not the first time that's happened to them but they took it in good spirits and it gave us and some of the audience a chuckle4 points

Pedulla Pentabuzz fretless bass. Michael Pedulla, who made this bass, has now retired. There are no more new ones to be had. I bought this instrument new in 2003 and it has performed faultlessly, upholding the well-deserved reputation of the brand. It has a shaded red finish with gold coloured hardware. Pedulla specified the Bartolini pick-ups in JJ format to provide the singing highs and growling lows with the stunning ‘MWAAAH’ effect you would hope to hear from a fretless. Included are the manual, trussrod key, Allen key for the bridge and case key. I hesitate to use the word ‘immaculate’ because someone with 20/20 eyesight might find a minute blemish; for the purpose of this listing, let’s just say it is in excellent shape. The case is in fine condition too. The last new price for these was over £5000. I have done my best in the unretouched pictures to bring out the best in appearance. It has been unused for four years now after a change in the music work I do, so it needs an appreciative new owner. Strictly collection only from east Devon, no couriers.4 points

Sire V3 Gen 2 with reworked pickups and rolled over fingerboard edges. Sire preamp with active/passive switch. Low action, light weight, no issues. Very little use as kept as back up to other Sire. Now £200 Edit: I have weighed the bass and it comes out at 7lbs 15oz. This feels right to me as it is feather light and way under my other basses. I have had enquires about postage and I am happy to box up the bass for courier but buyer will need to arrange their own service and level of cover.3 points

2005 Sadowsky metro MV4. Bought on here last year from Nick who had from new. Sadowsky Metro MV4 - one of the early Japanese models for sale or trade. Looking for £1675 which is what it cost me. Happy to consider trade for a Musicman stingray special. Slimmed down J type body, beautiful feeling neck, Sadowsky branded machine heads, humbuckers and the trademark 2 band Sadowsky pre-amp. The bass has had the vtc kit installed and a bass doc tort plate. generally in excellent condition for its age- see photos for wear, this is a 17 year old instrument that has been very well looked after . Original owner listed a dink at 15th fret that doesn’t affect playability- I’ve certainly never noticed it. Includes a gator rigid soft case as the original sadowsky branded rigid soft case needed replacing Weight is 4.1kg according to my digital luggage scales3 points

Last year I came into a little bit of money, and so naturally my mind turned to basses. I'd played and gigged almost solely, for 15 years, with a Godin PJ that I picked up from a charity shop as a teenager, but I'd always loved the idea of a real Fender P Bass. I've always loved the precision sound. I walked out of PMT not soon after with a spanking new Pro ii P Bass, which I think sounds lovely, and plays well. After a year of gigging though, I like it, but can't say I absolutely love it. I just don't feel like it's 'the one' if that makes sense? And for the money it costs, it really needs to be my main bass for many years to come. Well, today I had a play on this lovely thing, and was absolutely smitten. I know it's just a p bass copy, but it played so beautifully, sounded warm and rich, and had a lovely low action. It's a 2021 made in Japan version of the Hard Puncher. £1,100. It was light, too. Am I mad for wanting to sell the Pro ii, take the depreciation loss and get the Tokai? Has anyone got any experience with these? Is this just the start of the endless GAS that, so far, I've largely avoided? Opinions welcome!3 points

Pretty pleased with my latest ramps, made for an Aria Integra and a Yamaha TRB1005. I’ve always fitted ramps to my fivers, I just find them more comfortable to play. Black plastic, 8mm for the Yamaha, it took some work sanding off a couple of mil. The Aria has a matched piece of Ash, took a while to match the colour of the stain, but we got there or thereabouts. What do you reckon?3 points

Personally, I don't think there is good or bad music - only music you like, or dislike. The video offers you nothing, that's cool. We all know what we like and dislike. Who knows, I might really dislike you offerings and it's not for me, or, I may like it, but that's what music is all about...just opinions. As it happens, I think the player in question has writing and arranging skills as well. Obviously not to your liking, but they are certainly there and to me, he does sound like he knows what he is doing. This piece of his could be played by any combination of instruments:3 points

And - it's take a long time! - the neck's done I managed to find a mist overspray that didn't melt @funkle 's decal ! I haven't fit the hipshot-like string tree that @funkle sent to me as the three slots were narrower than the string spacing of the 1.5" nut and it would squeeze the G and A towards the D a touch. So - at last, ready to ship3 points

Pretty much exactly the same, but I may have different starting points if something jumps out. if I am really stuck , I have a digital piano that plays itself with different styles etc and I can start knocking tunes up on it quite quickly just using one finger to tell it what chord to play ! then a week of singing lessons to get the vocal just right 😁3 points

Way back in 1984 I went to the Old Duke in Bristol to watch an R&B band that were big in Bristol at the time. Great band, great gig and towards the end of course round came the solos. The bass player would probably admit it wasn't his finest moment. I can't solo at all so I'm no one to call him out, but it was a pretty bad 12 bars. Skip forward 3 weeks and I managed to get an interview at a studio in Bristol. And who should be the owner of the studio?.... Yup, the very same bass player. I got the job and needless to say i never mentioned that solo. I did however end up doing the bands live sound and had some of the best nights ever. They were an awesome R&B band and it was a pleasure doing the sound. And he did manage to play better solos.3 points

Genuinely agree... while I'm sure it's technically tricky to play, there no real melody or hook or anything actually interesting to listen to. Jaco has always been a bit overrated in my eyes.3 points

After some time with the 414, I can make some comments about it. There are two negative things I find on the bass: its weight (heavier than the rest of basses I have) and its hardware (tunes and bridge, easily repaceable). The possitive: it's comfortable and it sounds amazing. I bought it because I wanted a P-style bass. But it sounds nothing like a regular P-bass. Man, this bass has its own sound. And it's amazing. My BB735 sounds more "Fenderish", more like what I am used to hear in a PJ bass. But the 414 has its own vibe. I'm loving this bass. I just can't stop playing it. Yamaha is probably now my favourite brand. I mean, they are crazy cheap and incredibly good quality. It also happenen with my BB605. Crazy cheap and impressive quality (I din't like the preamp, but personal taste, it worked). And of course, my main bass, the BB735, that plays like a dream and the sound is just perfect.3 points

Firstly thanks to everyone who has made some suggestions about trying to make the bass work for me. After some consideration I've decided I'd rather sell than chop it around. For sale is a custom P Bass body made by Guitar and Bass Builds. It's a 5* 2 piece Swamp Ash P Bass body that has been rear-routed for Jazz Pickups with a 60's spacing and was professionally finished is a high gloss clear lacquer. I've fitted EMG J pickups to it, including an EMG solderless harness (VVT) and a Fender High Mass Bridge. The body, pickups and hardware cost around £600. The neck is a Status Graphite Jazz neck, fitted with Schaller tuners. The bass weighs 9lbs 3oz and is in excellent condition apart from a few small marks on the headstock (no chips though). It plays beautifully with a lovely low action but sadly I can't get the sounds I particularly want. There's no case but if I ship it I'll make sure the package is bomb-proof. I'm looking for £850 delivered or I'm happy to hand it over in person within an hour of Monmouth. I'm not prepared to sell the neck separately unless I first find a buyer for the body, so please don't ask. I have a long list of people who expressed interest in the neck already and if the body sells I'll let them know. No trades thanks3 points

After watching that disgusting display of TECHNIQUE FOR TECHNIQUE'S SAKE and TOTAL LACK OF GROOVE OR FEEL I was violently, physically sick. My next reaction was to smash in my computer monitor like a suburban dad witnessing the Sex Pistols on Bill Grundy. Has he not heard that LESS IS MORE? I guarantee that if he was asked to play Mustang Sally it would be nothing but an indulgent display of tapping and double-thumbing.3 points

Worst bass solo? Any bass solo. Joking aside, i can't stand them. It always feels as if the bass player is saying "Look. I can do twiddly bits, too. I'm not just part of the rhythm section". As if there is anything dishonourable about creating a solid foundation for the entire band. If the other musicians appreciate what I'm doing, that'll do for me. Grumpyguts is right - the bottom drops out of the piece when the bass takes a solo. I don't mind that I'm not in the limelight and I don't care whether audience members throw their knickers at me (not that they ever will, now I'm pushing 70).2 points

I can't help with the flats, but yes, you do want medium scale strings. I've got D'addario medium scale rounds (EXL160M) on mine and the tapers are juuuuust right.2 points

Re the Scott Devine video: Once again, I suppose we all hear things differently. From my ears point of view, most of the solos Scott showcased and dissected where brimming with very tidy, musical, lyrical phrasing. Scott has a great pair of ears and I like his enthusiasm for the detailed breakdown and nuances of the players. Two of my favourites as a bonus as well: Dane Anderson and Jeff Andrews.2 points

I suspect there's a strong correlation between those who like bass solos, and those who like jazz. Here's some, featuring probably my favourite (obvs not including Bootsy), he grooves, and he jazzes... Though not as widdlily as some.2 points

I usually have the vocal idea in my head or, if it's a riff, I'll record it on the phone. I counted recently, I have about 70 songs in various incomplete stages, so take this method with a very large pinch of salt. I record into protools and, after a few years of programming drums, have gone back to learning to play and record drums if I think the music should have the sound of "real" drums. Harder, but more satisfying, I think. Guitars and basses tend to be recorded via an Avid Eleven. It's not the best bit of kit but I've usually gotten what I need out of it. I've an open mind towards getting something better should a nicely priced alternative appear. Anyway, It's generally like this... Figure out tempo(s) Work out song structure to click and record a guide track really emphasising quarter notes (I tend to listen to bass, so I lose focus on a high pitched click like a cowbell or whatever), the bass or rhythm guitar becomes the click track. Figure out what the drums should do, see if I can actually play that and try to play it well enough over a few takes to be able to edit together a decent track Once I'm happy with the drums, bass(es) usually comes next Rhythm tracks next, guitars, keys etc. Once I've got the foundation of the song together, I start adding the fluff Lead guitars, solos, effects, fluff, etc next Vocals, if there are any, usually come last I tend to work towards a mix as I go. Everything gets tweaked along the way to what I think the end result should sound like. I tend to gate the kit, just to leave more sonic space for other instruments. I've a drum kit in a converted bedroom with my recording setup and other instruments, bring recorded by Behringer and Thomann gear. I don't have the luxury of Studio 1 in Abbey Road to record in. After I do some work, I usually bounce down a mix to listen in the car, or wherever I'm out and about, just to hear how things are going and to make mental notes for mix tweaks. I've recently been learning how to use delay more effectively and am trying to be braver and more savvy with reverb. I'm a late convert to bussing groups of instruments into a group fader, ie drums, basses, rhythm guitars, lead guitars, etc. Once everything is recorded and edited, if required, I get a final mix done and master it. Bad habits from this approach... I just learn the track to play it well enough to record. I miss the fine-tuning you'd do with structure or lines in a rehearsal room with other players. I've often found myself thinking I'd have played a slightly different drum track when I've eventually gotten to a final mix, having heard everything else at that point 😂2 points

Guy in the crowd shouted 'bass solo' a couple of years back and the singer appeared to think it was a good idea. I didn't BTW Auditioned on DB at a studio in London for a singer/songwriter and her producer a few years back. We're doing this lovely mellow song that required little more than some root notes and the occasional foray towards the rosiny end and the guy suddenly shouts "BASS SOLO". Thinking on my feet I didn't play anything different to the previous verse and chorus but I lent forward, dug in and gave it a facial expression and posture suggestive of intense and deep musicianship. They seemed quite impressed 😉2 points

An afternoon well spent at the Cropredy Fringe Festival. It was hot, so hot that the majority of the audience didn't venture out from the safety of the shelter onto the grassed area in front of the stage. It was a little off-putting at first, but we could just about hear the applause and the feedback we got after we played was all positive. On reflection, the decision to wear a hat wasn't one of the best I've ever made, but hey, we suffer for our art!!2 points

No idea if he's in a band at the moment. There's a video of his online where he talks about his 'journey' In a nutshell he started playing at school, went on to spend several years studying at a prestigous US music college at which point he was also gigging seven days a week in multiple bands in different genres. When he eventually returned to the UK he found himself unable to successfully monetise his skills until he got a lucky break when Davey504 featured him in one of his vids. Since then Youtube has been his main musical focus. Fairplay to him for finding a way to make a living doing what he loves.2 points
