  1. Mayones BE4 Exotic 4 string, very early model. Handcrafted In Poland by Mayones in the late 90s I believe. I reached out to Mayones themselves with the serial number on the rear of the headstock and was told that it was a very early model. This bass is pretty lightweight and looks great. The build quality and crafting are amazing and it is in excellent condition. It features what I believe to be a mahogany/maple neck, topped with a very dark (almost ebony-like) rosewood fretboard, over amazakoe (ovangkol) body in natural waxed finish. I believe one of the craft woods in Bubinga but I cannot be certain in afraid. It has a few superficial marks in the usual places (bolt on joint, rear strap pin) as I have tried to demonstrate in the attached pics . Other than that it’s pretty spotless. The body is just exposed wood grain and the neck feels beautiful in the hand, thin but comfortable and plays very fast if that is your thing. Bridge is nice and tight and the fretboard is spotless. There are a couple of very small dings in the back on the neck about halfway down, but due to the open woodgrain on the neck, they aren't very noticeable and take away nothing from the instrument itself. Very minor wear to the frets. Headstock very good. Machine heads all clean and functioning perfectly. Very high spec hardware all round. The bass features MEC pickups, with a tone pretty close to a Warwick but a little more versatile and a 2-band preamp. The sound is tight and punchy, everything you would expect from dense exotic woods. Neck is nice and straight with truss rod working as it should, action is set low. Passive pickups and has a push/ pull volume knob to turn on the on-board active electronics. Comes with a nicely padded TGI soft case in very good condition. All in all this is an amazing bass at a great price. Collection from RH13 or contact me for a shipping quote as I’ll need to pack it carefully. Courier preferred. Insurance at buyer’s cost.

  2. Seymour Duncan Jazz Bass Traditional 4 string. Made In Japan by ESP in the late 90s I believe. This is a super rare bass, not usually sold outside Japan from what I've been able to discover and I’ve never seen another one in the UK, so it’s probably one of the few in the country. You can find some more details here: http://www.guitarsjapan.com/ESPinfopage.html https://www.talkbass.com/threads/seymour-duncan-traditional-jazz-bass.1171173/ This is a heavy bass at 12.4 lbs (based on my home bathroom scales) and looks great. The build quality is amazing and the best I have ever experienced on a jazz bass, Fender or otherwise. I'm including a couple of links to this bass as it sits in a mix with my band. Both of these recordings are just DI recordings (no cab sims or anything else, direct into my recording interface). The full-band mix has some compression and EQ added, the raw DI track was just recorded with all the dials turned all the way "on", going through a Darkglass Super Symmetry compressor: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wwh2iuKIUV6y9AZUBMs-Frl8pangm1ge/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/16stz5S5kaUose-3AXTnqJ4XLH5TkqbfA/view?usp=sharing Very good condition, the usual dents on the end of the body where the strap attaches (see pics). Other than that it’s pretty spotless. Body lacquer has a nice thick feel and the instrument has a top quality finish. Bridge is nice and tight, fretboard spotless. One very tiny ding on the side of the fretboard about half way down but doesn’t affect playing at all. Very minor wear to the frets. Headstock very good. Machine heads all clean and functioning perfectly. Very high spec hardware all round. Hand-wound Seymour Duncan pickups with amazing tone, sounds like an US fender from the nineties. Nice and open, lovely mids, does bite when you play it hard. Passive pickups. Comes with a nicely padded Ritter soft case in very good condition. Also includes a wide leather strap. All in all this is an amazing bass at a great price. Collection from RH13 or contact me for a shipping quote as I’ll need to pack it carefully. Courier preferred. Insurance at buyer’s cost.

  3. Well nearly got it.. Was initially looking at a P Bass but there just not my thing tonally. So looked for a 4 string Jazz to go with my Atelier 5 without spending £thousands.. This fits the bill. Have heard great things in as much as build quality etc. Didn't want to mod it, just pick it up and play.. I really like gold and white, not sure about the gold pick guard so will change that out for a dark brown tort maybe. I think these may be sought after in years to come maybe.? . Ill take it to rehearsal and see how it sounds through the Aguilar.. 😎

  4. I went pretty rad! We had the chance of playing a very nice underground festival of our area; we had a technical issue (the guitarist's tuner broke during a song and killed the signal) but overall we had great feedback!

  5. About 20 years ago I visited a Guitar Center in Las Vegas, to this day it's the only time where a salesman didn't have a problem opening boxes to just show me stuff. He knew full well I wasn't going to be buying anything, but his mindset seemed to be more global than local (if I didn't buy there, I'd buy from home). Interestingly, my mate was with me, a drummist. I could hear him playing one of our songs from deep in bowels of the store; I started playing with him and then a guitarist joined in. The shop went quiet. We stopped a few minutes later and a little ripple of applause went round the store. Nice memory.

  6. I made a spontaneous auction purchase on e-bay while visiting my brother in Billericay. It was a headphone mixer/amplifier IIRC, nothing special or elaborate. The seller seemed a straight up guy and gave me his address and local landmarks to guide me there, since the place had a name rather than a number. I eventually found this rather swish place deep in the countryside north of Braintree with about 5 classic BMW's on the gravel turn around in front of the house. Rang the door knocker, and there is one Steve Harley of Cockney Rebel fame. Really down-to-earth guy, well used to handling folks stumbling with the opening line: "I'm sure I recognise you.......". Had a really nice exchange over a whole range of topics, although most ended up on his favourite subject of the day (classic BMW's).

  7. Played a party at the weekend and was introduced to one of the guests. “She’s Jack Bruce’s daughter” the host tells me..thankfully after we finished or it would have been a very nervous performance indeed!

  9. Other band members who set up and leave you no room to set up where as they have enough room to not only swing a cat but to swing an entire zoo. It's like c'mon guy's, look at the stage and space yourself out so its equally balanced.

  10. Oh yeah, and thinking about it a few years back I wanted a cheapie backup bass that could sit in its gigbag, one I wouldn’t be too concerned over but would be ok if needed. Found a Squier P on the bay, bought it now, then arranged with the seller to pick it up. He said he’d be out but he’d left instructions with his mum to do the handover. I knocked on the door, it opened, and my old friend from work who I hadn’t seen for 20 years was standing there.

  11. I've had similar. At a rehearsal, the drummer was complaining that my bass is too loud. I look puzzled as it wasn't very loud but I said fair enough, I turn down. Play again and he says the same so I turn down some more. Again, he complains and gets really irate so I play solo to show him its not loud but I turn down a bit more and we play again and this time I play super soft and miss bits out and yet he still complains saying the bass is way too loud. This time the singer now joins in and says yeah the bass is still really loud. So super whizzed by now, I said ok, I'll turn down some more and this time I turn my amp off and again he says I'm still way too loud. So I show him my amp is actually off. Turns out its the rhythm guitar they was hearing 😁

  14. Thanks Dave. It's been my main bass since late 2016. it's on a few albums now and went from being my main bass in one band to my default in most bands. Rics can be hard work but I find this one (my second time of Ric ownership) to be a good fit. It's the s model so no binding and dots rather than inlays on the fretboard. I added the black pickguard and TRC. Plus the strings are neon red, which is lost in a world of moody black and white photos! The photographer took a better shot of it from the weekend here.

  15. Depped for a disco band at a wedding reception that was taking place in a mid sized music venue. Pros: Monitor engineer Biggest mirrorball anywhere Cons: Using PA and monitors designed for an 800 cap venue for a reception with around 70 guests (half of whom are outside chatting/smoking) is overkill and horribly loud. We were on a 4ft stage but with no barriers. 2 or 3 songs in a kid gets up on stage and starts dancing and before I know it parents are lifting their toddlers onto the stage and the laughing and filming while they run around the stage and mess around with the keyboards and drums. At the break I lost my stinky poo and informed the venue the no insurance will cover any accidents so they should inform guests to keep their kids under control or we won't be playing. Some weddings are nice. Some.

  16. Hi everyone I am selling a few more basses as they are simply not getting used. This is an immaculate Status S2 from 2007 It’s the preferred through neck and is in brilliant condition and comes with its original case. A huge thank you must go to a couple of stellar basschatters who have helped to keep this bass in pristine condition. It’s plays beautifully with lots of sounds on offer iAs my stewardship of this instrument comes to an end, please take confidence that at least 2 of us have bought this bass back twice!!! Time for someone else to experience and enjoy it I m happy to answer any questions many thanks Bass now sold

  17. Just had my annual sub taken automatically… the best value I’ll get all year. Basschat has been a part of my online life for nearly two decades (well, over one and a half). It has made me friends, got me at least one keeper bass (Sonic the Jazz) and informed me on a wide range of matters. So thank you Basschat and all behind the scenes who keep her afloat!🙏

  22. There's a very rude word that I try not to use too often, it rhymes with 'front' and this bloke is an A1 prime example. He and his ape brother are in more dire need of a good hard punch in the gob than almost anyone else I can think of (outside of politics, anyway).

  23. I sold a custom shop flying V on ebay to a guy with no feedback. So before I accepted his offer I checked with him. It was Ben Grandfeld from Wishbone Ash. Last year I moved house and a chap with long hair, well spoken, Italian wife came to view. Oh you're a musician he says. We chatted a bit and I said what sort of stuff do you play then, Well, he said, I was in Jethro Tull for 10 years, did a stint with Take That and was with Gary Moore for the last 10 or so years. Jonathan Noyce. Lovely bloke but didn't buy the house

  24. First gig for my Nordstrand Acinonyx on Saturday evening. Not an auspicious start as my monitor, that had worked fine at rehearsal two days before, was DOA. I must have had a premonition, as I had taken a spare active pa speaker, which can be used on its side in monitor mode but we didn’t have the right cable to daisy chain it to the mini monitor used by the main vocalist. We had to do the whole gig with just the PA speaker between him and me. Fantastic monitor tone but not the same short range dispersal as a wedge. I couldn’t hear my backing vocals all night, so I was probably flat as a pancake. The Acinonyx was great. Lots of useful preset tones to call up at the press of a button. Those buttons aren’t just a gimmick. However, the tension of all the hassle setting up must have made me hit the strings extra hard and I had developed a large blood blister on my forefinger by the end of our two hour set. Just in time for two gigs coming up this Saturday at the Dereham Blues Festival. No monitor and I might have to play with a pick: it never rains but it pours!

  25. Never mind at the break - nip that nonsense in the bud immediately...a Basil Fawlty surreptitious cuff on the back of the head isn't the way to go these days (sadly), but an immediate announcement from the singer that injured toddlers aren't your responsibility, and Band Only On The Stage is the rule...

  26. With so many ever-changing Fender P basses...Fender Professional I and II, Fender Performer, American Ultra, American Vintage, American Original, American Original 50s, American Original 60s, and whatever they decide to go with next time they make an unnecessary name change, the best advice is to forget Fender and go G&L.

New arrival to the flock and with that I think I’m done… (maybe) Old Smoothie has finished my stable of where I’m wanting to be. 63 P with flats, cutlass with rounds, old smoothie with flats and a 93 stingray with rounds. That should cover everything I want. Oh wait!! Fretless doh!!! Here’s the triumvirate

  29. Recently setup with Labella Flatwound Strings a MIJ Fender Mustang Bass in Fiesta Red. The bass is in good condition for its age. A couple of small dings on the body and some surface scratches. A really lovely bass guitar but I’ve decided to reduce the size of my collection. Purchased last year from Fair Deal music, it has since had a setup and some lovely new strings. Collection from Alcester, Warwickshire. Any questions, let me know.

  30. Hi all Price Update 11/06/23 - Reduced to £1000 - won't be going cheaper! *Would consider trade + cash against a DB751 More of the herd goes to the cull because it's just not getting played! This time, it's my 2004 USA Fender Artist Series Jaco Fretless. Bought from Andy Baxter when he was still in London but it needed a lot of love! Replaced the pickups with std Lindy Fralins. Replaced the tuners with Hipshot Lightweight Tuners because of the huge neck dive! Had the fingerboard refinished and flattened by Martin Petersen at The Bass Gallery in London because it had a huge ramp at the body end of the neck (a std Fender trait!). At the same time I had Martin put MoP dots in the std position because the clay dots on the fret lines are impossible to see on a dark stage! Also had the bridge replaced with a hi-mass fender bridge. All set up by Martin. In the interests of full disclosure, it could do with a new nut. A previous owner cut the nut very low so the G string is very close to the fingerboard at the nut end. Not a problem for me as I play with a light touch (hence not getting Martin to sort that too) but a heavier handed player might find it too low. The bass had had the pick guard, the bridge cover and the pick-up cover fitted by a previous owner so the lacquer under the pick guard has the usual holes (can get pics if wanted). However, the bridge cover no longer fits over the new hi-mass bridge. Included are all the original parts (bridge & pickup cover, original Fender BBOT bridge, reverse tuners, pick-ups plus all screws) etc to return to original, should you want to. It comes with the original Fender G&G hard case and it even comes with original US made leather thin strap! Currently strung with Chromes flatwounds 45 - 100's with tons of life. Weight is 4.2kg and it's really well balanced with the lightweight tuners on. I'm asking £1,250 £1,000 for this bass, which I think is a bargain, all things considered! (a new one, if you can find one, is £2,549 list). Cash on collection or PayPal is fine. Not keen to use a delivery service as they're crap on the whole, but it looks like a fully insured estimated for this is around £90 (with DPD). Only selling within the UK. Not looking for any other trades*. Thanks for looking.

  34. This is sadly completely unused right now so I've decided to see if there is any interest in it. It's a gorgeous Fender Japan unlined Fretless neck from 1987-88 with original tuners in super overall condition and minimal fingerboard wear. I had a P Bass shaped body built by Guitar and Bass Builds in Oxford with the following specs: - 2 piece swamp ash body - natural gloss lacquered finish - Jazz bass pickup rear routing in (from memory) 60's spacing. - matching rear control cavity. They've done a lovely job and chosen some really nice wood for the natural finish. It is sporting a Fender high mass bridge (a la Badass) and EMG Jazz pickups with wiring loom (battery on the rear cavity). The controls are VVT. Weight-wise it's 9lbs 5oz. The whole lot cost around £900 to put together and it plays superbly but is sadly just not being used. I'm looking for £650. It doesn't come with a case or gigbag, but if someone wants it couriered I'll make sure to bomb-proof and will post insured included in the price. Alternatively it can be picked up near Monmouth or Bristol, or I'm happy to meet an hour away from either.

  47. Actually, the standard voltage in Europe is now nominal 230V, the UK began the harmonizing to nominal 230V about 25-30 years ago. Initially, part of this harmonization included a change (lowering) of the maximum voltage to +5% so 240V x 1.05 = 252V which is close enough to the EU's 230V x 1.1 = 253V for high line limits. Slowly the nominal 240V has drifted down, combined in part with a tightening of the low line tolerance (now +10%/-6%) which brings it within the standard EU limits.
