Playing gigs sitting down. Pop/funk covers band. Acceptable?

I finally gave up playing for a living (that sounds like I had done it for ages...what I mean is, when I lived in Tenerife I played for a living!), in Tenerife, because this kept happening. It was 2008 when things were a bit tough but some of the places we played we had been working for three years ...getting our fee regardless of the amount of people in the venue but somehow we were expected to turn up,set up...play to see if enough people came in and then pack up and go home with a very reduced fee,or sometimes nothing at all, if they didn't! I have never experienced it in this country...I have been paid more because we had a great crowd, sold lots of beer over here ( my local is brilliant for that) which is nice. Glad to see you got the money in the end.

I wasn't looking...so that's ok then. 😁

It's easy to "Unfollow" a thread though ...as you just found out! 😉

As my esteemed colleague Mr Blank has just so eloquently answered the questions @BigRedX has, could I just point out... The "in jokes" are only in jokes because those of us whom contributed in the beginning, had broadly the same sense of humour. They are not meant to exclude anyone and if , as a newcomer, somebody wants them explaining we are more than happy to do so.. My alter ego of Dr Mondeaux for example (the one where I am probably responsible for hurting your brain... because of my ridiculous phonetic spelling ,meant to imitate Parker of Thunderbirds fame, using a Nottingham accent...sorry about that), came about because I was meeting @Teebs in real life to go to a gig in his area, and I jokingly said "don't worry I'm not going to be harvesting your organs." I happily ignore just about everything else on Basschat because I got the information I was after shortly after joining, and I have no interest in the minute details of, ownership, playing, or the recording of bass, or any other instrument. The DOI kept me sane during lockdown...I live alone ,have health issues and was getting more and more depressed...so I am grateful that @ped allows it to flourish. I hope we don't bother the mainstream members too much!

Why would I want to isolate myself when on stage? I am probably not as "Pro" as the OP but .. .I have had a few years where I paid all my bills by only playing bass, and... If playing to 2000 is a measure ... I have played Rock City a few times....which leads me to my point. The onstage monitoring and overall stage sound at Rock City was phenomenal. The noise of the packed crowd singing every word was so moving and inspirational. I'm not sure that it would have been so enjoyable with my ears blocked by IEMs.

Actually it was us,Australia, NewZealand India, and France. We had a "pact with Poland that said we would fight to defend them if their country was invaded.

I have a simple answer to the original question.... Do an arrangement of "Man in the Mirror." You then have MJ writing about changing the world by changing oneself. That shouldn't offend anyone shirley?

I like Roxy in all their guises. I went to see them at Nottingham uni when Virginia Plain had been a massive hit. It was so completely different to any other band touring at the time.

I could well show my face...I am not sure if I'll be able to drag myself away from The Burnt Pig though. 😉 Seriously though ... talking about bass and bass gear is just not my thing ( as you know Frank) so I haven't committed to attending so far, but there is a good chance that I turn up on the day.

UK towns with a healthy live music scene?

I would have come along to the Latch Lifter but I will be in Leeds for the Saw Doctors gig. Let me know if you gig there again and I'll try to come say hello. -
UK towns with a healthy live music scene?
Raymondo replied to Sparky Mark's topic in General Discussion
I live in a smallish town, Ilkeston. It's in-between Nottigham and Derby and therefore most tastes are catered for. Ilkeston Itself has rediscovered the joy of bands playing on Sunday afternoon/ evenings.some weeks as many as five pubs offer up bands or duos. One has the solo singer with backing tracks but the rest are all live. It's not too bad at all.😁 -
But you tried them all anyway. 😉

I didn't have the confidence ( or the technical skill) to think of a career in music as possible. Like most youngsters I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living (sleeping all day and going to the pub at night wasn't an option apparently!), my Mum was insistent that I was going to University to qualify as a history teacher. After a spectacular argument involving me saying that I didn't want to do that ,and her insisting that I tell her WHAT I wanted to do instead I blurted out...PLUMBER ( I have no idea why!). The next day I came home from school and was taken to a family friend's house, for an interview with his friend, who owned a plumbing business... et Voila..I was an apprentice plumber! It was years later after playing the clubs, pubs, and corporate circuit as a part timer, that I moved to Tenerife, joined a band and earned a "living" playing bass for three and a half years. Maybe doesn't carry the Kudos of being in a famous band, or even, teaching music and playing in theaters, but I enjoyed my time playing to the holiday makers...having a laugh and generally being an irresponsible fifty year old. 😉

Any BCers gigging in Leeds tonight (Thurs 1st Sept)
Raymondo replied to Raymondo's topic in General Discussion
I'm here now...the whitelocks and all the other small pubs were fabulous but nearly all of them only had pale ales ...I like good old fashioned "amber" bitter and my go to reserve of Cider was also not to my taste in aany of them, hence I didn't stay long in any of them. The Duck and Drake is still a spit and sawdust pub .. suits me ... and the band are apparently Americana, which I don't mind ... looks like I'll be here all night( they have two Amber bitters) ! 👍👍
