  1. I’m locking down anything in off topic the second it gets unfriendly. Don’t like it? Go elsewhere.

  2. My NBD arrived yesterday - a rather tasty MM Bongo. Plays beautifully and looks the biz - it has a subtle light sparkle in the colour!! The fretboard is roasted and figured maple and there’s no pickguard. It appears to have taken exactly 10 days from build to reaching me - this was a direct order through their ‘Vault’ on line system - as was the long scale TC passive Stingray I bought - seems to be a seamless process. I’m sure it’ll be first choice for wedding gigs 😀

  4. This has just arrived from Bass Direct: My god it’s lovely. Only had a brief play as need to get my son from school but the flat tone is just spot on. All the controls are solid, the amp operates supremely quietly and I can see the EQ has huge versatility. Cannot wait to get it out in the wild and really get to know it properly.

  5. I feel for you. It happened to me once, but not because of slap, because I made an audition with a fretless for a heavy stoner band... You used a strategic marketing system which consists in saying to people not to focus on a weak point to force them to focus on it. It's a natural human reaction. It's used to force people to focus on an unique selling point presented as a weakness when it's absolutely not one. Your weakness is a real one and by telling them, they simply focused on it and missed the rest. You've been honest, which is great : you are a bassist after all. 🙂 Next time, just play and when you get the job, improve your weak point. We live and learn every day...

  6. Not sure, but I'm guessing this one sat in the store for six years...maybe lost in the attic or a back room...because it's essentially a new bass. Protective film is still on the pickguard and the control plate. I doubt anyone's even touched the strings...they felt and sounded new. Had to change them, though. Five of my basses have GHL black tapewounds, but I had a set of D'Addarios lying around collecting dust, so I went with them.

  7. Mmm… by that tone I’d say it has a tort guard.

  8. Hi all, Imminent arrival of something shiny means this is up! This is a wonderful bass with an astonishing tone - I originally bought some Dimarzios to go in this prior to it arriving and never felt the need as it sounds phenomenal. Condition for what I think is quite an old bass is overall very good - note that there is a (repaired with CA and Titebond) crack from one machinehead which is solid and does not affect anything at all. Please give it a good home! Cheers, James

  9. Hi In a past week I got these two beautiful short scale basses in my hands, and immediately made a sound comparison video. I hope it will be as interesting to someone as it was to me while I was recording and playing them.

  10. Don't go into an audition putting yourself or your playing down. Just smile, do your best and let them make all the decisions based on what they hear. not what you tell them.

  15. Sorry to hear that Jake. I had similar before where I got invited to an audition at short notice. I was told it was going to be a jam session as there was no time to learn any songs and they also lent me a bass as (it really was that short notice). I turn up to be given a 5 String (I don't gig with 5 strings) with an action as high as Clifton Suspension Bridge. We went through the songs and I thought it sounded generally good, as did the band leader (guitarist) who thought it was really tight. I was quite disparaging about my own performance though as I felt it was very much in the fly. He said they had another guy to audition a week later but they'd let me know soon after. Sure enough, a week later I got sent a text saying "sorry mate, the band thought the other guy was a better fit and seemed to play better on the songs we asked him to rehearse". Well, go figure.... Approximately five weeks later I got another text saying "tell me to do one if you want, but the other bass player isn't working out." He wasn't learning the songs and wasn't particularly musical and when he reached difficult passages, he started playing very quietly! After a long chat I decided to give it another go, this time armed with my own bass and having been given a chance to learn some of the songs. I was asked to join in the spot. Funny how these things work out an if you think of the audition as a job interview, then often the first few sessions are the probation period. As my Dad always says, what's meant to be yours won't pass you by.

  16. Band said "Let's add Plugin Baby to the setlist". ... Goodbye minimalistic approach. Four pedals are used in that one so I might as well go for full functionality within the tiny footprint.

  17. New VHS rip! Same situation as 1st Larry Graham's VHS. The clip that has been floating through the Internet for the last 20 years is really poor quality. I was able to find a mint condition copy at the Japanese auction. Now I am sharing this with you! Keep it funky and stay tuned for more! An introduction:

  18. Continuing my “I’ve got way too much gear for the space I’ve got” here’s the next item I’d like to move on - my five-string (low B) KK Baby Bass Traditional. I bought this bass about six years ago secondhand from a guy in Wales who unfortunately shipped it to me via ParcelForce. When the Bass arrived, the fingerboard was detached, and the body had suffered a few small dings (all shown in the photos). We both learned that the ParcelFarce additional insurance is worthless for musical instruments and after a while the seller simply ceased responding to communications. Being a reasonably competent engineer, I reattached the fingerboard myself and this has remained stable ever since. I mention this as I like to be open and transparent in my dealings. About a year after I bought her the standard tailpiece failed (probably as a result of the transit damage) and I replaced this with a modified Thomastik tailpiece with the added benefit of fine tuners which are really useful for quick fine adjustments mid-gig. Bottom line is as much as I love this bass, an old motorcycling injury to my left thumb makes playing this (or any double bass for that matter) for any length of time an uncomfortable proposition. I originally paid £850 for the bass but I’m now selling for £650 in respect of the history of damage. Obviously given previous experience I am extremely reluctant to ship the Bass but would be happy to meet halfway within reason. Alternatively if you wish to try before you buy, tea/coffee will be available 😎I will also include a Stagg double bass stand in the deal. The Bass comes in it’s original KK ‘gig bag’ case which is in pristine condition with all zips, straps, etc intact and working as they should. Any questions, fire away!

  20. Took me a long time to warm to rap/hip-hop because of all the mentions of Ns and Hs and Bs, which I didn't want to hear in music especially. It wasn't until I started playing the bass that I tuned out the lyrics and focused on the beat. I prefer the independent non-commercial hip hop.

  23. Def, but also bear in mind by your own words you`re not a slap bassist. This audition may have seemed fun, with great guys but maybe if you got the job week in week out slap-bass might have become a chore.

  27. Looks like the pedal is on all the way through the video, just with everything set to noon, so the pedal might be altering the tone, even though it’s set to ‘neutral’. Most folks put a drop of compression on their audio tracks before uploading too, then of course there’s the YouTube compression, so without a list of exactly what equipment and plugins they used we’ll never know. I suppose we’ll all just have to keep buying and trading kit to find THAT tone. shame. 😄

  30. I've been encouraged to jump in and comment on my Flea signature Jazz bass. As folks will know, they all look the same, being copies of the same bass... but they are a great way to get a 'played in' replica of an early sixties ('63) Jazz. I felt it was bit 'slick' looking and the dings and scratches were a bit predictable and repetitive. The chips, especially, all seemed to be in groups of three, the same shape. I couldn't do much about the dents, but I used a kitchen knife to chip off a bit more paint and make the wear look more random and natural. A grubby rag (used for cleaning up my lathe) dulled down the bright patches of wood that appeared. I also used a hot air gun (set fairly low) alternating with pipe freezing spray to check the nitrocellulose, front and back. This is a bit scary, but actually turns out to be fairly easy to do and controllable. The hot air makes the new cracks disappear, and at normal temperatures they are faint and less noticeable than when freshly done. I didn't get any flaking off. To subtly accentuate the checking I used the same grubby rag to apply dark oak woodstain and immediately wipe it off again. This also aged the paint a bit more as well. I like the result.

  31. Owing to Old age and looming Home downsize I am reluctantly selling my Stunning Gibson SG Supreme in very good condition. This was the first of the " Gibson Guitar of the Week " Series and was limited to only 400 Worldwide. The Flamed Maple cap gives this a distinctive tone with more highs than the standard. It has had a brass nut fitted and is strung with LaBella Flats Comes with original Gibson case in very good condition and truss rod tool. Any trial more than welcome. Its Collect only from me in Leeds -- ( I Will not post it ) I live Very close to J46 of M1 and close to A1

  32. I popped into the bass gallery in camden earlier today and tried four basses: *fender P bass 1961 *fender P bass 1975 *fender P bass professional 2015 *yamaha bb2024 On the fenders, the necks was so so different. The 2015 felt in between a jazz and P. I really liked it. The 75 felt the most awkward to me. chunky in terms of depth as well as being rather sticky. I didn't like it. The 61........................ Wow it felt completely different to anything i have have played. The shaped seemed like a very shallow U but the fretboard was wide and flat. You would think that it would feel weird but it honestly didn't. The 2015 Felt like similar to my squier in terms of the shape but miles better. Trying out the four above made me realise the importance of getting a bass in your hands to see if you gel with it. Shame the 61 fender was 8K loool.

  34. Just packed up rehearsing with 3 others after 2 meetings. It was the usual, experienced Guitarist too loud ( yeah, if you don't know the chords just play it so loud no one can tell) who had only half prepared for this the 2nd rehearsal ( not the nuances but chords), Singer unsure what she wanted to be, a bit pitchy and unsure, and me and the drummer who had done our stuff. Despite it being really convenient I could see it would be a long and for me unstimulating battle to work up anything to gig readiness, so bailed! I've stuck with bands on the basis it would get better but know the warning signs for me, luckily I wore my mask so maybe did not show my displeasure so much, although my body language may have betrayed me! If it's covers I'll learn the song/changes 90% ready for the next rehearsal and expect everyone else to be on that same page. If I have to start to explain the chords, or where the choruses/solos are played I know I'm going to be doing the heavy lifting and it does not suit me. I'm all for making the song one's own or doing an arrangement but if others have not even bothered to do their homework, then I'm off. I'd love to be proved wrong by them but I'm 66.....!

  35. This may be a very recognisable JayDee Roadie bass that has cropped up round about over the past few years online. Probably the Bass Salvador Dali would have had if he was in Hawkwind. It is a gorgeous yellow handcrafted JayDee Roadie 1 from 1981 Mahogany body Mahogany neck Ebony Fingerboard - 21 fret JD Split coil pickup Volume, Passive tone Schaller tuners Weight: 4.25kg 9.4lb I have decided to part ways with it after a year of glorious service where it has been on a small UK tour and a trip abroad but I had purchased by this time a new Hiscox Peardrop Bass Case. It has lived in the case over lockdown as I have been away from home during then. When not in use it has been kept nicely oiled with lemon oil and wiped down with a cloth. Has not had new strings since but will need the pots looking at as these crackle slightly when turned. At nearly 40 years old it has 'settled' in and it a solid instrument but has a crack by the nut which I have on good authority was taken to JayDee in Birmingham and told that it has not affect on stability of the bass. There is some wear and crazing on the bass but the crazing is only apparent upclose. There is also the general wear and tear of a bass nearly 40 years old with a few bumps on the headstock. It has also had the odd 'tour bump' during my tenure. There are also 2 famously bad repairs in the paintwork with one on the body at the front and the other on the neck which doesnt effect playability. Fantastic deep sound but can reach highs and middles nicely. Absolutely open to offers and the price is just a benchmark. But I will only like to sell the bass after the prospective buyer has given it a thorough try out and inspection. I'm moving between all these locations in the next week or so but will eventually end up in Bruton in Somerset

  40. I don't see any point in doing anything other than directing this question at the creator of the video. I see that someone already asked that and got roundly ignored but maybe if you ask nicer than they did - or message them on insta, seeing as they left a link to that? Asking here will just end up with the bass equivalent of the verbal diarrhoea one might expect at a blind wine or whisky tasting. 100% subjective, 10% lucky guesses and in this case the labels have been ripped off the bottles so we'll never really know what we're drinking, and the host ain't telling.

  44. Good point, a bassist I know uses her Ampeg V4B at all her gigs and it’s plenty loud enough for the stages she plays (which are pretty big). I don’t like bass in the monitors too much so when I used her rig it handled all on stage sound for me no worries, connected up to an Ashdown ABM410.

  45. Haha! I fled Bangkok and went to Koh Chang for a week to escape the smoggy lockdown and work from the beach. I'm back on the bass and about to apply the first coat of tru-oil. Pics soon. I did have a parcel from Japan waiting for me when I returned... Gotoh vintage style tuners, and they weigh an absolute ton. I love it.

  49. I went from Jazz to the Beatles and ‘60s pop to ABBA to Prog to hard rock and metal to electronic to punk to indie to funk to folk, accumulating everything I liked along the way. I’ve never really understood why people have a particularly strong leaning to one genre at the expense of something else, it’s a bit like saying “I love all food as long as it’s made from potatoes!”. Or, in this case, cheese. 😉😂
