  1. Well well well, impatience rears it's ugly head. In an ideal world this, as mentioned above, would get another couple of coats of lacquer. But I'm home and want to finish it. I flatted as much as I dared and then infilled any little low spots with superglue. Superglue polishes up nicely and it was mainly along the borders between differing woods that needed filling. In certain light you can just see the difference between lacquer and superglue, but as it's over woodgrain, not a solid colour, it's very difficult to see unless you know what you're looking for. A, you can barely see it. B, it's an old Kay that was free. C, I need to stop being so fussy. 😁 Now the body/neck is done I need to do something to stabilise those pickup casings. More superglue I expect, or some black resin, depends what I've got at home. I've got a Wilkinson bridge with brass ferrules in my parts box which will suit and a set of gold speed knobs. I'm sure I've got enough spare looms to be able to renew the wiring and pots as well. The TRC and nut have been polished and lacquered. Just the neck and frets to sort then. Horrible indoor lighting photos.

  2. Mind you, there are others whom I (personally) don't miss in the slightest.

  3. I took a risk recently and sold off my Stingray 5 and Rivoli and have ended up with this from Bass Direct. It’s a 2021 Nash PB-J 63 in Fiesta Red. Apparently the first owner already had too many basses. Lucky for be though as it plays like a dream and sounds amazing…

  5. I’ve been told to spend less on bass gear in 2022 so I’m buying a 70s P bass in parts! I was thinking about putting this in a stand as a shelf object in the man cave but for now I’ve hung it on the wall. Pretty cool I think! The tuners are original but the s/n has worn off so I don’t know anything more about it. I might have bought this whilst pissed over Xmas. ped

  6. So, I’m not a fan of 5 strings, they just become a thumb anchor for the times I’m hitting the E string, I’ve tried, just can’t get over it. I do love a Hipshot D-Tuner though as I like to cover a bit of grunge. I purchased a Wal the other day and like all my basses my first thought was D-tuner. After research I decided I needed an EB4 in gold… On further research I discovered Hipshot stopped making the EB4 😩 I fired off an email to hipshot asking about a model replacement number (expecting a nay and a hunt for a secondhand model) on the 28th of December (it’s the holidays, they won’t answer until the new year. To my suprise a few hours later I got a response from Oscar Yuan. please call us it’s a special order as we only have one left and in gold!! I like to think he went rummaging through dusty old boxes and emerged triumphant, dtuner held high, but he probably looked at the stock list on the PC 🤣😂 A call to the states and a quick conversation with Oscar and the item was ordered. 29th of December I got an invoice and dispatch note, it’s on its way. Oscar, thank you, Hipshot great customer service. Another happy customer.

  7. I also quit for a few years for my own reasons (which I won't go into). But obviously I had to return at some point so I could resume losing money on buying and selling basses.

  8. I am weirdly excited by this, does that make me a saddo? 😂 In any case, I agree with the view that the current website isn’t great. However, I’ve found that their responsiveness via email and access to niche items you can’t really get anywhere else more than makes up for that.

  12. My sincere advice to you is to identify those posters whose jokes you dislike and to use the ignore button. If you think a member is being trolled or that inclusion is not being promoted then you should report the posts to the moderators and let them decide if anyone is being bullied. This avoids unpleasant confrontations. Happy New Year

  13. 1979 Musicman Stingray - £1550.00 Selling this beast which I bought from bass direct about a year ago for £1750.00. It's class but sees very little action as I play a P bass almost exclusively live. The Moses Graphite Neck is very comfortable, well fitted and plays like a Jazz neck in terms of the profile. Comes with a hard case and the original fitting plate for the neck and screws etc. I can send at the buyers expense if you like, or anyone is more than welcome to come and try it for themselves here in Middlesbrough.

  14. Anyone have a Ken Smith 5 string and want a sixer ………. Swap No money!! I have this Ken Smith bsr 6 string in Sycamore in perfect condition no issues with original case and wax/ polish and paperwork. Built in 2011. Sadly I’m not really a six string player. Ideally I am looking for a TRADE…… with a Ken Smith 5 string don’t mind which model as long as it’s in good order and no issues. possibly interested in Fodera 4/5 string as well but nothing else thanks. Your welcome to come and have a play , any questions / offers let me know by Pm. I live in Reading area.

  15. Darn! Half-price, no neck-dive, decent weight... I've always had a soft spot for Gibsons - it's between my ears where my brain should be 🙂

  16. Christmas/family stuff all sorted and so it's back to the important stuff So that Jack doesn't have to keep changing the tuners round, we agreed that I should get a set of tuners for the fretless neck. Problem is that - like most things guitar/bass build related - the prices of stuff is going through the roof. The Hipshot Ultralites fitted to the Lull are now £40 EACH! That's £200 just for the tuners!!! Happily, Hipshot have started allowing 'Licensed' tuners to be sold - and even happier is that Bass Direct have quite a few models in stock...and they arrived today. Hipshot USA at the back, Hipshot Licenced at the front: The licenced ones are about 10% heavier (still very light) but 60% cheaper. And very nicely made. That'll do. And so there's not much stopping me from getting on and finishing this...

  19. Interestingly, he uses a P-bass on this live version of Le Freak from 1978. Think he might have used this to record Dance, Dance, Dance and Everybody Dance. And a Jazz a few years earlier:

  21. Later in his career he was seen with a Sadowsky Modern J type too. He would’ve made rubber bands on a shoebox sound good.

  22. My favourites have been 90’s ones (mute bridge), 2 eq and my Classic - which for all intents and purposes was a posh 90’s stingray…wouldn’t say no to another early 90’s one

  23. Just a word of warning - personally I would be looking for an older model (90s / 00s), purely because that is where the best value is (also, a lot of people prefer that era, although that is of course subjective). The new prices are rather expensive, whereas older models are great basses and can be found relatively cheaply.

  24. there are 2 main reason we get bullies 1 # the bully is being bullied themselves ,, in that case, they "often" bully the people they trust the most, or dearest to them & sometimes get forced to bully by their "peer bully leader" 2 # bullies are scared of things many of us take for granted in many cases bullies have extreme intense phobias, to combat their fear they become quassi narcissists, in this way they forcibly manipulate any situation eg i knew a very very very tough bully ,, we eventually found out he was scared/ absolutely terrified of the Dark i guess people who suffer from jealousy & trolls, may resort to target bullying on line = many things, all un related to Bass Chat & this forum

  25. I heard this song today and was feeling nostalgic for the music itself - I wondered what music I didn't know about of appreciate from this year. Maybe we can have a series of threads for different years. This was from an album released in 1970

  26. As has been pointed out earlier, it's rather difficult to see what track this thread is actually on. In this instance I'm regretting adhering to the edict of the "Don't post before reading" thread.

  29. Currently the LP Jnr DC, an Antoria EB-3 shorty, a Harley Benton PB Shorty and Retrovibe P30 shorty. I have had several others though - mainly Fender flavoured - but I did have an Epiphone EB-0 for a while. The LP Jnr DC is the pick of the Gibson-y ones and at £500 I'd say very much worth the extra £150 over an Epiphone. Possibly the biggest minus if you can't live with it is the 3 point bridge. I put a Hipshot Supertone in mine. Here's mine in action Sounds great through the big pa there. Incidentally a Gator Deluxe Les Paul guitar hard case fits one of these like a glove.

  33. I think it was left to him in BE's will Edit: trying to find a YouTube clip to substantiate that, I think I've got that wrong. Rather, BE gave it to him deep into a late night pıss up. Imagine waking up with a clattering hangover and thinking, I wonder what foolishness I got up to last night...... oh ffffffffffffffuuuuuuu...... The good news is that JT still uses it on tour

  34. Andy is right, it's a BC Rich Eagle, but you're hearing his Stingray. I recall an interview with Marcus Miller where Bernard told him he used the BC Rich basses for performances like this because they looked cool but he thought they sounded terrible.

  35. Yep, it's really not as simple as that though. My decision affects 3 other guys financially/professionally and a sold out venue. What would have made it much easier for everyone is if the government did the right thing but unfortunately it's political and not about public health.

  36. I find Mark very responsive, even out of hours. They’re not Amazon, but a one man band (plus the odd helper). Despite the higher commission than the Gallery they’ve sold all the basses I’ve sent on commission in a few weeks for far more than I’d get on here or eBay/Reverb with all the tyre kickers and lowball offers. It’s easy to forget there are very few dedicated bass shops in the UK, and I doubt any of us would do a better job for the profit margins on offer. They have a lot of very nice kit for sale, and post Br**it and the reduction of realistic buying options, have become more important.

  38. Great catching up on all this, Broad St until '82, Snow Hill from then on. There was a brief overlap where they had a different shop exactly opposite George Clay a few doors up from the old Broad St shop. Martin

  39. It was originally Broad St (had a Dave Hill Superyob guitar in the window for some time). It wasn’t a very big shop and they moved two or three times IIRC. Snow Hill/Constitution Hill was Yardleys (certainly till the early 80s). Imprinted in my memory as they refused to put my Acoustic 371 stack on consignment as ‘too old’ - it was about 10 yrs old at the time - I think they wanted me to trade it in as they had a stack of new Acoustic equipment. I think Musical Exchanges ended up in the Yardleys shop. This was all around the time of Level 42 being of great interest to most bass players - and so they should always be!! 😀
    2 points
  40. I don’t recall when they moved but it was late 70s - did Musical Exchanges move to the Navigation St shop? My new Stingray came from Jones and Crossland (Smallbrook Queensway) around that time.
    2 points
  41. But not that shop location? It was on the corner of John Bright Street/Hill St/Navigation St almost opposite the New Street Station signal box and Bristol Road bus terminus before moving to Dale End?

  42. That is not my comment quoted, my response to that mentioned the city&guilds testing course.

  43. @discreetwas always entertaining and also a fine bassist (I saw him play live with Pigbag maybe 10 years ago). I recall he did occasionally take breaks from BC and this may be another of those

  44. I used to like him and always thought his moderation was fair

  45. The big question is do you like working with a multi effect. If you prefer simple, on the fly adjustments then individual pedals are the answer. Suck it and see is my advice. Great to hear you're in a new band.

  46. tomorrow i will start with The Fender Story ,, starting from mark king then moving directly into why Fender was never the face of "early" UK funk if Fender ever reads this forum, it has little to do with their product being bad, the issues we had were mostly cosmetic, & Fender does eventually win in the end,

  47. heres the bass nylon flats, 90's sticker vibe, see the little cutoff button? been looking at a beefier bridge, those old leo fender barebones ones are okay but the new engineered ones really project sound

  48. My new power supply arrived a few days back so I've rejigged the board to accommodate it. The Sony wireless is now hidden under the top tier. And I reckon there's just enough room for a bass synth pedal to complete it when something pops up in the classifieds.

  49. This is my latest board. I have an Electro Harmonix Switchblade Pro incoming so this might be a bit impermanent.
