  5. Always willing to help, but Steve was rather clear about the purpose of the thread, and as a classical musician, I'm not savvy in these things (I always bought an extra seat for my 65 stop pipe organ on one side and for the other organ on the other side, and that was that). That said, If there's anything I can do, @Steve Browning, just send me a PM. You could also have my mobile phone number just in case. Oh, and if you happen to be in the extreme South of Norway, then I'll buy you an extremely expensive beer! (not as expensive as the £15 pint I bought next to the Notre Dame - they should've burnt that café to get even, not the goddemn church!)

  6. Hello, friends I will sell most of my basses, so let’s start with my Modulus. As you can see in pictures, is a 1990 bass, in excellent condition, even the frets are almost untouched. Great sound too. Alder body, quilted maple top, graphite neck, phenolic fingerboard, EMG PJ - 45J + 45P - configuration (reverse P, to be more accurate), EMG 2EQ preamp. 35” scale, 17 mm string spacing at the bridge, 4,3 Kg on my bathroom scale. Equipped with D’Addario EXL-170, as the manufacturer recommend. Plus a new set of strings. Plus a non-original hard case. The price is 2100€ (only Euro, please), shipping in EU included. No trades, please! Thank you!

  7. BC marketplace comes up trumps again and sorts me out with just what I was after, thanks to Bobby D. Fancied something a bit gnarlier and more straightforward than my J and, having already tried this out at a rehearsal, I think it could be just the ticket. I’m now sold on replacing the flats on my J (which were on it when I bought it) with rounds – I really like the feel but the amount of snap I want for the sort of things I’m playing just isn’t there. I’ve always preferred a Jazz neck, but I think a combination of this one not being too hefty and me being more comfortable with playing bass than I’ve ever been before mean this isn’t too bad at all. Also, it seems like the slightly smaller body than the J puts the neck in a marginally more comfortable position to reach the lower frets – has anyone else found this, or am I being a weirdo? Next steps for the P are: flip the pickup round, and while I’m at it get a black scratchplate. Anyway, here’s a picture of it with the J and a bonus, additional beast.

  8. Two whole decades after my last bass guitar purchase I've finally lashed out and increased my collection by 100%. But - you ask - what can it be? A classy Fodera? A Wal? An original stack-knob Jazz with OHSC?

  11. For a quick fix - I found some rubber grommet thingys that fit over the mute adjusters. Works for me, because I often use the top adjuster as a palm rest (and for some styles I hook my little finger around the bottom one), and the knurled bare metal was making my hand sore.

  12. I have a dodgy back and a lighter bass along with moving to a short scale both helped. I think having less extension on my left arm, and less stretching the wrist around the first few frets really helped in my case.

I’m selling as I have two of these and prefer my other with single coil pups. I have nothing but the gig bag so postage would be an issue, collection ideal. Demo vid will follow when I get time

  24. I bought a Protection Racket gig case which is like a cheaper version of the Mono but also have a Blake Bravo bought for around £35 as ex auction stock which although heavy for a soft case has loads of pockets, waterproof zips and a neck rest too. The brand embossing is a little garish but it's a lovely case. https://www.protectionracket.com/products/item/bass-guitar-gig-case

  25. I've been ordering from China for years, in fact I just ordered a new phone last night from Banggood! With AliExpress it depends on the seller - I ordered a £140+ item from the official GPD store on there and when it arrived with a small fault they paid return shipping and gave me a full refund, similarly with Banggood I've had refunds and been allowed to keep incorrect items etc. In fact I'd recommend Banggood purely because their live chat is very good, much better than a lot of UK firms in fact, my last two phones and my daughter's tablet have all come from there. DHGate are a reseller like Banggood, Fasttech, Gearbest etc so you should have no problems and can pay with PayPal, AliExpress is basically the Chinese eBay so it depends on who you're buying from.

  26. Yes, it would be easy with a dual input preamp. Something designed that way would be good but you could take any old preamp, put 2 large input resistors in, increase the preamp gain to compensate, and bobs your auntie, you would have totally independent circuits. Most of the old fender (the man not the company) circuits pull be like that, grab one from a g&l or something

  27. Modulus Graphite Quantum 6 SPi Custom. SPi relates to the bolt-on neck. Custom comes from the quilted maple top. All other parts (chrome parts, electronics) were standard at the time. A great example, and a fine instrument in perfect order. The new owner will love the MG brochure headline: "Once in a lifetime". https://planetbass.com/product-category/stock-bass-guitars/modulus-bass-guitars/

  28. Just to clarify, there's only 1 amp, the second combo cab will just act as an extension cab. The walkabout head doesn't have speakon connections unfortunately. Sounds like I'll be getting my soldering iron out though from your answer...

  30. Welcome back to the bass. light weight is where we are at nowadays. Some of the old gear still sounds good but few of us would trade the sheer practicality of compact and lightweight for possible improvements in tone, if they do actually exist. I think you need to think in terms of building a system. There are a couple of choices to make up front. Do you want to go with a flat response monitor on stage and generate your tone with electronics or do you want to have an amp which will be used to give you your tone? Separately you need to decide I you want to use the PA to provide your bass to the audience or to provide all or most of the bass from your back line? Obviously if you do then you need a bigger system especially if you are likely to ever play in bigger venues. The first thing then is tone. Choose based on how it sounds, not on some notion of size. If you are going to work with amp emulators then they are going to work best with systems that add no coloration of their own. Some bassists are using PA speakers on stage to achieve this. Look up FRFR on this site. If you want the amp/speaker/combo to be part of your tone then choose on how it sounds first and foremost. Start with a single 8ohm speaker and you can add a second for extra volume if you need it. If you add an identical speaker you will hold onto 'your'tone. I play in a number of bands. I've gone for flexibility. A 300/500W amp and a couple of 12" speakers. A single 12 is enough for rehearsals and small gigs and plenty if you go through the PA. Adding a second let's me play bigger venues without PA support. I don't often play with PA provided but the festivals we do play I have been let down more often than not by the sound engineers so now I take everything with me. If someone mucks up I have the backup on stage and if not well I don't have to turn the master volume up. I've not found a single 10 to be quite enough unless you filter out some of the deep bass, and/or use compression. Most decent 12's will match all but the loudest drummer. If you are looking for somewhere to start and you want to be as light and compact as possible I'd say go for a single 12 at 8ohms and an amp which will drve 300W into 8/500 into 4ohms. That's unless you decide to go down the FRFR on-stage monitor route. You can add a second matching 12 later if you join a band and find you need it. Mainly though listen to the sound.

  33. Update: I took the Epiphone over to the USA and gave it to my grandson. He plays in the church band in Woodstock Ct. I then bought a Alden violin bass off ebay. I set it up with flats and it played nicely and I gave that to another grandson here in the UK. I then found my first Hofner in the Little Guitar Shop in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham. Just the ignition model but so light and punchy and it did have that Hofner plunky sound. But I sold that when I found a CT and this is it now, no more buying. OK I haven't tried a made in Germany 500/1 but the cost is too much, and I'd be frightened of denting it. I'm not comfortable handling expensive instruments. I'm happy driving a Ford and have no desire to own a Porsche. So I've got a Hofner and I must be honest and admit to wanting that logo on my head stock. Every make of violin bass bass seems to have a slightly different character sound-wise and I've never found one I've disliked. They do require a good set-up to play nicely and get the action suited, sometimes shaving the bridge, so I've always had a luthier do the work for me. Flats are my preference and the dedicated string sets will fit the smaller tuner holes. Comparing the Ignition and CT models I didn't realise how different they are and regret selling the Ignition. The CT has less plunk and more sustain. The Hofner pick-ups, (on both models), are the most powerful of any bass I've owned. I would say the CT is the most articulate instrument I've ever tried, it has a very clear voice and, lost for words, I can only say musical voice. I really enjoy playing it and it is my favourite instrument alongside my Squire Mustang. I seem to alternate between the 2. Lastly I would like to say how stunning the woods are on all the models. Guitars are beautiful objects and the sunburst finish just makes them works of Art.

  34. Sadowsky Preamp pedal, £90 excluding postage in good condition, only ever used on my flight-cased pedalboard The new SBP-2 has the same famous circuit that goes in all Sadowsky basses—just like the original Sadowsky Preamp/DI pedal—but with a slimmed down design and smaller footprint that is perfect for crammed pedalboards and vintage basses where onboard preamp installation would affect resale value. It works with all passive basses, active pickups, and upright bass pickups.

  38. I actually like the Ashdown stuff. I have had ABM stuff in the past and it was great but heavy. My practise rig at home is a 1x10 MiBass speaker and a CTM15 and it is absolutely gorgeous. Will go check out the RM stuff.

  39. Update: I've shimmed the neck to drop the action a touch, tweaked the relief and filed the nut a bit lower. It was already a nice easy player but now it's exactly how I want it. Sorting the intonation required the Telecaster compromise where one string is very slightly flat at the 12th and the other similarly sharp. Maybe a cent or two out and therefore not audibly a problem. IMO, 2-saddle bridges not a problem (for me). So half an hour's work and it's spot on for my purposes. Other things: immaculate paint job; really nice neck profile with a pleasant satin finish; smooth and tidy fret ends; supposedly 'cheapo' tuners actually feel perfectly solid. Minor issues: a bridge plate screw is slightly squint and the neck pocket's a bit rough. Slight fret buzz at 11 on the G but I won't often be going up the dusty end. That's the geometry sorted. Next step, the sonics, then bling it up. Still happy

  43. Tony Goggle is a bass player of almost mythical status who for unaccountable reasons is a name familiar only to members of BassChat. The facts of Mr Goggle's life emerge on an intermittent basis and in no chronological order. Over the years fellow Goggle fans @Rich @ped @Kiwi and I have attempted with scant success to separate truth from rumour. About the only thing everyone agrees on is that Goggle's career peaked when in 1970 he formed the short-lived 'experimental' power trio Slack Mattress. Goggle's egregious tactlessness, his unconfined sexual drive and his monstrous appetite for recreational narcotics and strong liquor established the paradigm for rock musicians past and (not so much) present. Some of us believe that Mr Goggle should enjoy wider fame but he has never given an interview we can find nor has he been photographed. Recent reports suggest that Mr Goggle is currently in hiding, this in response to the tragic events surrounding 'The Ten Million Watt Comeback Gig' at Devizes Corn Exchange earlier this year.

  45. I've just upgraded to a CS6. I also bought a T-Rex current doubler, which is installed and working just fine. I have seen it mentioned on a couple of FB groups that people have run a Stomp on a single 500mA CS6 output. I tried it and it seems to work ok, but I'll stick with my current doubler so there's no chance of any power issues mid gig.

  47. I'll stand up for some of the smaller festivals, as the ones that are run well have been among Cherry White's better gig experiences: Togfest in 2014 stands out in my memory (people on hand helping us to load-in, and a proper soundcheck...plus the crowd bought every CD we'd brought with us), as do Walthamstow's StowFest (literally a p!55-up in a brewery, as we played at Wild Card), and three good years on the trot at Dereham Blues Festival (including one late set played on a train platform, and the lesson learned that it was madness to try and play three sets at different locations in one day and drive back the same night). Maybe the difference is what you're used to normally: as our usual fare was short sets on multiple-band bills around Central London, these festivals seemed like a breath of fresh air by comparison - certainly one of the main plus points was that they had a ready-made crowd of punters who were up for some new music and a good time.

  48. Selling or trading my original 1964 Fender Precision Bass. Nicely worn. Professional refret. Everything else original including case which is worn as well. Ready to gig. It is an early 64 PB with the clay dots. Checked everything like nail holes, pickup wires, matching patterns under the serial plate and in the neck pocket etc etc. Previous owner has damaged the logo and scratched the patent numbers. Remaining part is still there and original. Nice strong output. Truss rod screw still flush with the neck end. Everything works as expected. SOLD
