SOLD AND GONE. Selling this lovely Fender Urge ii Stu Hamm bass. I have owned this for years and years and it's a wonderfully sounding instrument with IMHO the best neck Fender ever put on a bass. It's somewhere between a J and a P with an oval profile that is really comfy. The only reason I'm selling is because it's 4.1kg / 9lb in weight and my medical issues mean I can't cope with that anymore. Another unique thing about the bass is the pickup arrangement. It's Jazz / Precision / Jazz with a very clever switching arrangement that controls all 3. With the switch at the rear it is just a J as you'd expect, with a balance / pan control. With the switch in the front position it is just a P. The balance control does nothing. In the middle it's all 3 pickups on - but with the Jazz pickups still controlled by the balance. So you can have Full JPJ. Or you can have the neck J with the P. Or the P with the bridge J. There's a great preamp system too that is very powerful. It's 34 inch scale and the finish is far more metallic in person. The bass is 16 years old so of course there are some little marks here and there, but so far I haven't been able to photograph them. Marks you can see in the pics are reflections from the room. I'll get outside later to take some more. It's currently got some very dusty D'Addario Pro Steels on it (40-100 iirc) but I will stick some fresh strings on - probably 45s as that's what I have. I'll finally get to use the Dunlop polish set I got for christmas too! When I got it used at least 10 years ago I didn't get a case or a bag with it, so it's collection only from Northants. I'm looking for about £1250 ono. The only trades I would consider would be Sandberg Superlights - ideally a very lightweight 5 string example, but any Superlights would interest me. EDIT - I've had some trade offers but they've all been too heavy. Max weight for trades is 3kg. So it's really only Sandberg Superlights as I don't think there's anything else that light. When asked who our fave players are, we all come out with an arms length list but who for you is tip top of the pile and why. So, just ONE name, not two and put up a YT vid showcasing demonstrating what it is about their playing that does it for you. For me it could be a 3-way tie between Louis Johnson, Larry Graham and Bernard Edwards but BE just edges it mainly for the many cracking, memorable basslines he wrote and played not just on Chic tunes but all those other artists BE and NR wrote songs for and produced. It's not just the lines themselves but his fantastic tone and nuanced playing using muted notes. Incidentally Nile is also my fave rhythm guitar player (not heard anyone quite nail his style and tone) and Tony Thompson is a fave drummer who had a brilliant hi-hat technique. This clip contains BE's famous 'chucking' technique, something which I still struggle to get quite right.6 points

Slowly but surely the decks are being cleared of family commitments, other small projects, near-death experiences, battles with the useless AA (the motoring one, not the drinking one ), searches for suitably sized paulownia timber (many thanks to the folks here for the leads and @Cosmicrain in particular) and 'life in general'...and I reckon I'll be starting to move forward properly on this in the coming weeks. As everyone will have forgotten by now the background, last year @Happy Jack asked me if I could: - narrow the neck on his Mike Lull 5-string and - build him a fretless neck that he could interchange easily and without the need for adjustment of saddles, etc.. This was the result with the narrowed neck: And less than 1/2hour later, with the fretless neck: Trouble is...what if you want to play fretted and fretless in the middle of a gig? So the plan is to leave the narrower Lull neck on the Lull, and build a body for the fretless neck. But, while we are at it, also see just how lightweight-yet-practical we can make it. I've tweaked the initial design a touch - mainly to get the lower waist another inch forward for better balance when playing seated and to try to get the aesthetics working a bit better. The top horn is still well forward to achieve the same thing on the strap: The paulownia from Mike @Cosmicrain should be with me in the next couple of days, I know which pickup @Happy Jack wants to fit, the fretless neck arrived from Jack yesterday and so, pretty soon, I will know how big a challenge getting towards a playable 6.5lbs is going to be!5 points

In very good condition, owned from new (2020) and never left the house. Plays lovely and currently sporting flatwounds. Comes with the Fender padded gig bag Pickup only in NW London and you are more than welcome to try the bass out. Reluctant sale really, my wrists just don't get on with P basses so making the switch to the dark side (short scale). A little detail finished - an aluminium thumb nail cover opener thing. This is what will be the back of the second bass. It needs to be flattened before I do anything with it as it has cupped slightly since I bought it a year or two back. Should look alright though!! In the meantime, other bits of wood have been turning up so they can stand for a good while before I work on them. Nice slab of ash which will become a Telecaster shape (might be a bass, might be a guitar - no, no, no you say...)4 points

Gah! Just one? It’s always a toss up between Pino and Tony Levin. My knee jerk reaction is always Pino, but now you’re making me think about it and since my recent ennui with the typical ‘80s style fretless playing that got me into playing bass in the first place (Paul Young’s ‘No Parlez’ album to be precise) I think I’m going to have to say TL (takes a long look in the mirror and asks, “Who are you?”). He’s not dissimilar to Pino in his playing, but he also has that prog sensibility where he might go off on a tangent and come up with something completely unexpected and new (funk fingers for instance) and then he also plays upright and cello. So, waves of hate to you @Barking Spiders for making me choose 😂 and here is Mr Levin doing his thing.4 points

You'll never need another cabinet other than this one. It handles 700 watts of power @4 ohms. I've been running this with an Aguilar Tone Hammer 350 and club gigs, wedding, and general casual gigs I would never need anything else. This cabinet is "brand new", I just prefer the vertical 2x10 that Jorg made for me so this little guy needs a new home. I'm selling this for £500 cash!!! If you ordered this from Schroeder you would pay $799 pus shipping ($195) as this one was custom made for me to handle 700 watts RMS. So, in pounds you would pay £829.76! With that in mind, you are saving £329.76 straight out of the gate. It also has a heavy duty Titanium bullet tweeter at 200watts RMS. For sale is a custom P Bass body I had made by Guitar And Bass Builds based in Oxford. It's loaded with a set of EMG Jazz pickups, the EMG loom (with battery) and a Fender Hi Mass Bridge. The total cost was just shy of £600. The body is P Bass shaped and is two piece 5* graded swamp ash. It's been professionally finished in a clear gloss lacquer. The routing for the jazz pickups was done from the rear so there is no need for a pickguard. Condition is excellent with one or two very small marks that have been impossible to photograph. The EMG jazz pickups and loom were bought brand new for this project as was the bridge. I'm looking for £370 delivered. If it doesn't sell I'll source a P Bass neck and keep it for myself.3 points -

One bassist who consistently perked up my ears was Paul Webb of Talk Talk, especially on fretless: not the most flashy but he produced these snaking through-lines that often defined a melody complementing the vocals.3 points

I narrowly missed out on buying the first edition stingray with radio knobs a few years ago. One thing I like about rays are how consistent they are - apart from the feel, the sound is unmistakeable and never wildly different from bass to bass/year to year IME.3 points

If it’s any consolation I’ve had three shoulder ops caused by too much rugby and had a similar setup in my right shoulder to you. It took a while to heal but it did get better and while I’ll no longer be able to compete in the javelin on the world stage (not that I could before) as long as you do your exercises, it will improve. I don’t know where you’re based but you’d be more than welcome to try out one of my Hohner Jacks possibly for a long-term loan. Hang tough and wishing you a speedy recovery.3 points

After six years over here, you appreciate what the UK has that other places don't. Right now, it's the fact that my kids won't get shot at school, have to do lockdown drills, and then have to say the pledge of allegiance to the place that permits all this to happen. I like Canada - have been there a couple of times. But we don't know anyone there and immigrating there is tricky. We are considering Ireland as well - I have family there and citizenship, but finding somewhere to live is nigh-on impossible. The housing shortage there is way worse than in the UK. It's a work in progress, we're in the "discovery" phase right now. Maybe I'll end up back over there with my TE-1200 before they show up in the shops!3 points

Yup. At a pub in Melksham once, we had a complaint from a customer who said we were too loud. This was 5 minutes after we arrived and we were still bringing our kit in from the cars at that point. We pointed this out and he said we "looked loud". But then again, it was Melksham. They still think electricity is the work of satan there.3 points

This from Steve's own Farcebook page: "Hey all, wassup? News from here is a bit of a curveball. You might have seen from Insta earlier in the week that I was admitted to hospital. Turns out I've got cancer. Probably lymphoma. Had a biopsy yesterday to find out more, getting results early next week. All in I'm feeling pretty good today, pain is managed and I was able to eat a lot of stuff today. I'm in an excellent hospital with absolutely brilliant staff whose capacity to care is extraordinary. Doctors are being fabulous and I'm getting to see Lo and Flapjack often. Obviously I've canceled every bit of work I have coming up. PhD will be suspended for a while, gigs canceled, private students postponed indefinitely. I could be back able to teach in a couple of months. I'm hoping I can be back at BIMM for the start of the new term in October. But right now I don't know enough to predict any of that. If you want to help out with material stuff, the easiest way is to subscribe to me on Bandcamp or just buy some music. There's no gofundme cos I don't have medical bills, just lost income and this part of my job - selling beautiful music for curious people - is still very much functional. Seymour Duncan Jazz Bass Traditional 4 string. Made In Japan by ESP in the late 90s I believe. This is a super rare bass, not usually sold outside Japan from what I've been able to discover and I’ve never seen another one in the UK, so it’s probably one of the few in the country. The build quality is amazing and the best I have ever experienced on a jazz bass, Fender or otherwise. I'm including a couple of links to this bass as it sits in a mix with my band. Both of these recordings are just DI recordings (no cab sims or anything else, direct into my recording interface). One very tiny ding on the side of the fretboard about half way down but doesn’t affect playing at all. Very minor wear to the frets. Headstock very good. Machine heads all clean and functioning perfectly. Very high spec hardware all round. Hand-wound Seymour Duncan pickups with amazing tone, sounds like an US fender from the nineties. Nice and open, lovely mids, does bite when you play it hard. Passive pickups. Comes with a nicely padded Ritter soft case in very good condition. Also includes a wide leather strap. Would have to be Bruce Foxton, I just love his melodic riffs that in most of The Jams material carry the song as much - imo - as the vocals. None of them too complex but on a lot of them he sings as well with cross-melodies.2 points

These should be a solution, but in my experience they don’t work. I broke my shoulder and struggled playing bass for nearly a year afterwards. My Hohner B2A was nice and light but being full (34”) scale and also required a long reach to the lower frets when played on a strap, I wouldn’t recommend them to the OP. Nice basses though. I think the OP needs a short scale bass lighter than his current Ibanez. In my case I used a Danelectro Longhorn - very light and a 30.5 inch scale. Bit of a Marmite choice I know, but possibly the answer. Failing that, maybe an Ibanez GSRM20, which has 28.5” scale and looks lightweight, and a bargain at around £169.2 points

When you have some new songs to learn (covers) and put in a load of effort prior to rehersal and make up crib sheets for the others if needed and then at rehersal you hear one of the others (the one that sits down all the time..) say.. "Yeah, I've listened to them in the car a few times". That same band memeber who always gets to gigs first and parks right by the load in, gets all his gear in but then doesn't move his car so others can enjoy a shorter distance struggle with their kit. Who also could only ever end a song with an overly elongated and utterly boring crash bang wallop rock and roll ending. I think a fifth of our gig time were his bloody endings! I brought it up and said you can only do three or four a gig and seriously trim them down. We seem to be sticking with it now.2 points

Four years after a bicycle accident still having trouble with the fingers of my right hand..two of them are curled which makes it hard to reach for the G and D string and I can't bend my thumb because of a constant frozen shoulder but things could also be worse. This is a hard one for me because of that and I'm missing a couple of notes but I'm glad I can manage this more or less..2 points
