  1. Played a really cool little bar last night (actually more early evening) here in deepest darkest rural Bulgaria. It's run by an English guy and they even have real English beer, which is a rare as hens teeth here. It's an old barn turned into a bar, with a decent sized courtyard out the back, and a decent PA system. Very cool little spot. I'd definitely play there again, or even go to watch other bands and have a few beers.

  2. Gig last night. We all awoke yesterday to news thst our singer had gone down with a cold and ebola of the vocal cords. By utter chance, our singers neighbour is a singer in a different band and we all know him to at least say 'hello' to. A quick bit of grovelling and he agreed to cover, which resulted in a frantic 90 minute technical chat and practice. We made it very clear to the crowd - our home crowd - that he was an emergency backup singer in order to set expectations of any major musical clangers to come. Except he knocked it out the ballpark with nary a stumble. About half our songs he'd never done live and had to use an ipad clipped to the mic stand for the lyrics but you'd never have known, he was that slick. So many thanks to Simon from Band Substance http://www.bandsubstance.com/www.bandsubstance.com/Home.html for standing in and doing a truly first class job, and we hope Darren recovers quickly from his cold and regains his voice for our Jubilee gig. Although I may have accidentally told the crowd you were suffering from a nasty STD rather than a cold!

  4. Played a dep gig last night for a band. No rehearsal involved, which is always interesting, but fortunately they are rock solid so it went smoothly. I think we were last in a room together in the mid-80's, so getting on for 40 years ago. It was an absolute hoot and I'm doing all over again in a couple of months. Last together at the Thirst Aid Charity Day, The Castlemayne, Basildon ( '85 or '86 I reckon) Last night at The Papillon, Southend. I don't think we've changed much at all 😂

  6. Interesting night. The UB40 tribute band got hired to play at a nice midsize venue, but it wasn't your usual gig: it was a birthday party for the owner of the place. There was another band before us playing for an hour, and then us. Our keyboard player had to rush back to Ireland due to family matters... so we were a little nervous: that keyboard plays a lot of very 'signature' riffs and sounds, plus he shares vocals with our guitarist. Still, we've done it before, and we manage alright with the horns helping cover a lot of the space the keys leave. Well, it turns out the band before us had a keyboard player who is a UB40 fan. So we invited him to play and he did wonderfully. Yeah, it was different and didn't have all the right sounds, but it sounded pretty good. He seemed to enjoy the additional pressure, and the additional praise from the audience We had to force him to take our money in the end (he was on stage the whole time, nearly 2 hours, and he made us sound better than without keys, so it's ony fair), which he refused initially... and now we may have a keyboard dep, which we had tried for a while unsuccessfully. Result!

  7. Mark King 'of bass' is great and slap is the best thing ever invented for bass playing 😊. I know for sure this is definitely an unpopular opinion on BC if not the wider bass and even music community

  10. Oh trust me, this was not a situation of my choosing. Last time I was in the UK was 2016 and then we opened a service based business that couldn't function without me and that basically screwed any chances of coming back to the UK until COVID struck...and the rest is history. I never took the batteries out of the bass before putting it into storage because I didn't think I'd be away for so long...! Any hoo some pics are below. The original pickups gave out so the previous owner sent the bass back to The Mothership and had new ones installed. The rest of it is original and honest - finish issues and all and the facings are walnut IIRC. And one of it being played live:

  12. Just thought I should share my great fortune/ honour in becoming the only the second custodian of an unmarked 73 jazz bass. Before I share the story, I know that the bass has the black scratch normally found from 74, but I've seen the original receipt from Carlsbro Sound in Mansfield clearly marked Sept 1973. So the bass is 100% original down to the case, original paperwork, inspection tag, owners manual and spare set of flatwounds ! Having saved his hard earned cash for years, the original owner, John B sadly passed away suddenly and his wife couldn't bring herself to part with the her husband's pride and joy, which has been sat under the bed until now. His wife decided to pass the bass on to someone else and I was recently invited to the family home to hear the story for myself. I have several photos of the John playing the bass in his band. I can't share them on here as they aren't mine to share but I can assure you the bass is visible clear as day, including John's initials on the lower horn, as was the trend in the 70's apparently and which are still on the bass now . . . . I promised I wouldn't remove them. Of course when I 1st saw the bass, apart from being floored by the stunning condition, I assumed JB stood for Jazz Bass! So an incredible, virtually show room condition beautiful jazz bass, preserved in time.

  16. Hi I'm Adam, I play bass... First started dabbling over 10 years ago, then after a break of a few years came back to it with renewed consistency, playing for the last 4 years or so. For some reason since first joining bass chat, playing bass involves a lot more time looking at basses than playing them 😂. I often get carried away buying/selling secondhand, ultimately to move them on and more often than not regretting it! Definitely more of an enthusiast, hobbyist than musician but I have tried a significant number of lower-middle range instruments over the last few years and with the help of more experienced people, I now consider myself pretty well informed! All the best guys.

  17. Disclaimer: This is NOT a Fender, despite the Fender logo. 😉 £295 Posted. SOLD!!! I built this bass a couple of years ago, it plays and sounds great, and the reason I'm selling it now is because I need to downsize my collection because I have far too many basses, and I hardly gig nowadays. The body is made from alder, and is a lovely olympic white that is starting to yellow a little, you would have to look very hard to find any marks on it. The pickup is a Kent Armstrong split-coil which is the exact same specs as the Fender Custom Shop 62 pickups, I have the Fender Custom Shop 62 in my other home built P bass which is also alder body and rosewood board, so I have compared them side by side and they sound identical to me. I purchased the neck from someone on Basschat, I can't remember what the make was, but its very nice and it came with the tuners which I was going to upgrade, but they work and stay in tune very well, so I kept them in the end, the frets are nicely finished, and the rosewood board is quite dark and looks lovely, its a joy to play. The bridge is exactly the same as a Gotoh 201 but without the Gotoh name stamped on it. There is a small dent/chip near the E string tuning peg (circled in photo 5), its not really that noticeable unless you already know its there. I have uploaded a couple videos where I've tried to show how versatile the bass is, from JJ Burnel to James Jameson, the only downside is that it is me playing and not the great men themselves, so please excuse my poor technique and playing, the bass you hear is the actual bass because the tracks have had the original bass removed. Nice n Sleazy was recorded into Reaper where I messed around a bit to try and get the JJ Burnel sound. My Girl was recorded into Reaper with no effects added at all. Probably best to listen through headphones to hear the bass properly. You are welcome to come and try the bass out at my home in Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Nice n Sleazy Hi Res).mov My Girl.mov

  18. They do. I played a duo gig last night, in central London. Just me and a singing guitarist. Our audience was 200 or so happy, legless Sunderland fans!! We played Sweet Home Alabama and they all joined in, we had to go around the whole thing twice. After that they were putty in our hands! Same with No Woman No Cry, Brown Eyed Girl and all the Elvis songs we played. We were entertainers for the night and it was a good job done. . . . for them and for us.

  19. Here’s a possibly unpopular musical opinion…. I don’t know how true it is & it’s not my opinion, but it is “an opinion”. People who dislike slap bass only do so because they’re crap at playing slap bass. Me…. I like a bit of tastefully done slap bass.

  20. Well lve just completed 30 gigs/rehearsals with the HD R400 l bought off here a few months ago and l have to admit it is the best amp l have ever played through and lve played through most over the years including Ampeg/Orange/Trace. The tone and harmonic sounds are something to behold and the slight break up of the preamp valves is just perfect. Everywhere l have used it l get compliments of how it sits in the mix. Honestly this amp is simply awesome. I use a 4 string musicman through a couple of Super compacts and we play predominately Soul/Norther Soul/Funk and Disco music. This amp perfect for all of this....l simply love it. What does everyone else think?

  22. My band is very much an amalgamation of its parts, and nothing like the kind of stuff that I would write or play left to my own devices. I'm rock through and through, and bring a bit of that to the band. Our guitarist is more a jazz style player, but I try to discourage that at much as possible 🤭. Our singer is into Duran Duran, Genesis, The Cure, type of stuff, and our drummer likes a bit of all sorts. I don't know why or how, but it seems to work, and we have a very definite style that just sounds like "us", and it's hard to define as fitting in to any specific genre.

  23. This is a fiesta red P-Bass that was restored by Restauracja Guitar in Poland https://restauracja-gitar.pl/ The restoration included repainting the body with nitro, complete shielding and redoing the electronics, and giving the neck and hardware an aged look. The original bass is MIJ, plays great and weights just 8.5lbs. I am based in Geneva but travel regularly to London and Berlin and can hand carry the instrument to either location for in-person collection.

  26. Hi,this is my bands latest studio recording, almost live 😁 Drums done in one take Vocal in one take Bass & guitar took two takes. It's not perfect but only took a couple of hours from start to finish. We go out as a Black Sabbath covers band so don't try to fully mimic the original recordings, just have loads of fun playing them. 29. In all the venues I've seen and done sound for, a pair of Xlr's from any instrument would be the dream scenario. Just plug 'em into the channel strips, correct for gain and balance in the mix and 'Bingo'..! I've yet to come across a PA that a bass could harm, if fed in this way. From the rest of your 'issues', I'd suggest that you were unlucky in getting a below-par sound guy, s'all. Change nothing.

  30. Why not explain your feelings on lending out a bass you love, worth a few thousand pounds, your friend has a band he will understand the costs and sentimentality involved with musicians and certain possessions. Suggest he hires something for the guy flying in. There are a plethora of places around the country that provide this service. better still offer to Dep and play that gig yourself 😄

  31. Just a beautiful bass… but, just signed off on a huge extension…so…got to behave. waited a long time to find one. replaced every screw - black pickguard screws, pickup screws etc. New Gotoh 201 Bridge as original bridge (will be included) was tarnished. Worth noting that screw hole pattern was different to 201 so holes were drilled and refilled by a luthier (Steve Curtis - Manchester guitar repair). Sound wise - think Marcus Miller…erm. Yeah that. Volume/Selector/bass/treble/mid select - you can adjust sweep and frequency of the mids - 3 selections available. some minor edge scratches/swirls - but it’s from the mid 90’s. Very clean overall. it’s stunning actually…might withdraw, see how we go. It will come in a Warwick Rockbag - so would prefer not to ship…but can at buyers risk/cost. £25 uninsured £45/£50 insured Happy for trials etc.

  34. I am in 5 (on paper at least) and hold down quite a stressful job. However this breaks down to one very busy band when you look at it; One band is on hiatus and is essentially where I play locally with two very chilled (lazy!) musician friends, One is predominately studio based and only does a few shows a year. the albums are critically acclaimed but it all looks busier than it actually is, One is a duo with an old school friend that is run by me so I just fit it around everything One is kinda on hiatus but is essentially the band that is linked to the last, The final one is an international touring level act that have just recorded a new record. I have been upfront about them using deps but this one zaps the most time. My wife has a massive family (I don't) and she is the one who has pushed for me to do all this -- we're very committed / supportive of each other but fairly independent. I also think you HAVE to be upfront with other band members and it is easier if you come into something already in other bands. Don't hide auditions and don't bang on about how great the drummer is in your other band in front of the weaker drummer. If it's too much, scale it back.

  36. Sometimes you get, erm... 'interesting' sound people (I won't use the word engineers here). You just got one of those, I suspect, and my experience is that it's almost always useless to try to change their ways so when I encounter them I just shrug, smile, and try my best. Live to gig another day!
