  1. I’ve just bought 2 simply wonderful, Spector basses. I decided upon a Euro Bolt 4, and a Euro LX 4. Both have Aguilar pickups, one with the OPB-2 preamp and one with a Tone Pump preamp. I’m completely and utterly enamoured with them both. They’ve had a basic set up, and need my preferred strings put on them, plus a small nut adjustment, but I’ve recorded with them, and they have blown me away. Stunning to play, and I just can’t believe I’ve not been down this route before. So happy, and Bass Direct have been fantastic helping me to get these incredible instruments ☺️

  3. Nice and warm today and time off from work means into the garage!! Got some jobs to do around the house but found time to round over the edges of the Telebass and to drill the recess for the jack socket. I used a Forstner bit to get a nice sharp edge around the socket and a flat bit to shift the bulk. After a quick sand I put a light coat of sealer on the bass and it is starting to look quite nice. I'm pleased I re-did the binding as It has turned out nicely in the end. I've not done binding before so lots of lessons from that - I completely agree with the old saying of learning from your mistakes. All the big stuff is drilled, cut and sanded so should be at a point to do the final sanding and get the finish done. Cheers

I took this in a trade recently so am just looking to get back what it owes me. 1984 Westone Thunder 1A 34" scale / 20 frets Weight - 8lb 15oz Width at nut - 40mm Active/passive switching plus a dual tone (series/paralell) switch for a huge variety of powerful sounds. All electrics working as they should. It needed a bit of a clean up when I got it and the back of the neck had a few nicks in the finish. I've since rubbed it down and given it a couple of coats of gun stock oil, so it's now silky smooth. It could do with a few more coats purely for colour matching, but to me it's great as it is. The bridge was pretty grimey so that's had a good dose of Brasso and elbow grease and I've set it up with a brand new set of Fender 7250L strings (100/80/60/40). It's now playing and sounding great. There are a few dings on the body (buckle rash, indentations etc) which I have tried to photograph, but the joy of the natural finish means nothing really shouts at you. There's some thumb wear over the pickup which is probably the most noticeable area of wear, and there's a little wear below the bridge. I have an old (non-original) but perfectly serviceable hard case that I can let go with it. A few pics to be going on with, but I can take some more tomorrow in natural daylight if required. EDIT - 4 daylight pics with case added Collection preferred, but I can ship to the UK only at buyers cost. As always I’m also open to a motorway services handover, especially now we’re allowed a picnic. 😉

  7. NBD Arrived this morning. It's basically an "if Geddy had visited Sandberg" bass. Satin body, the Black Label Pickups and passive VVT electrics. Nice and light at 8lbs too. Couldn't decide on pickguard so got a couple of spares...

  10. It seems it’s time to throw out a huge shout out to Mark, Ash, and Will, at Bass Direct. They’ve been looking after me so well (as always) over the past 2 weeks, and I just wanted to thank them SO much for their A1 service, their care, their time and especially their friendship. These guys ROCK!! I’ve been going to BD for over 10 years now, for everything bass related. I felt it was time that I shared my experience, and especially like so many companies, working under very difficult circumstances. They never get flustered, always listen, talk, understand, and help. Efficient, friendly, and caring. I know it sounds like a “love in”, but I just wanted to share something positive in this weir, and dark time. They deserve much recognition in my humble opinion. I have never even picked up a bass before but finally plucked up the courage to fulfil a lifelong ambition (I'm 54) and bought a Sire Marcus Miller M2 from Andertons, and it arrived ..... v exciting. I also bought a guitar stand, strap and cable from Amazon. I was encouraged to post this by the nice people in the 'Introductions' group. I wanted something relatively 'budget' to learn on, I guess if I make progress I can upgrade later. Today I subscribed to the Bassbuzz online lesson programme, successfully tuned my bass and then completed my first lesson! It definitely makes bass-like noises and I am very proud of myself! I don't have an amp, my plan is to play through my Focusrite audio interface into my computer, which seems to be working OK so far. I use headphones which seem to cope quite well and sound great but unsurprisingly my 'high power' computer speakers completely crap themselves if I try and play through them, I hate the way they sound anyway so I kind of enjoy torturing them to be honest but its not an issue, I'll just use the headphones. Here are some photos of my guitar (is it OK to call it that or is it strictly a bass?), hope I haven't gone over the top. It seems sturdy and seems to work well, I am very happy with it - but if I was being hyper critical I would probably say some of the details/ finish look a bit basic - bear in mind this is the only bass I have ever held (heh) : I am a complete beginner, watching too many videos of people adjusting their guitars on YouTube has freaked me out a bit, the 'action' on my bass at the 12th fret appears to be about 3 mm - which from what I read is OK? I have also twiddled all the knobs vigorously on my er ... bass... and can definitely hear the passive / active switch, but the tone ones not so much. Anyway, I am really enjoying the whole experience so far, on Day 2, heh Hi etc! Jolltax

  12. Many have seen my 5 string build last year. Originally I planned it to be fretted, with 2 EMG MMCS pickups. As the project progressed, I decided to make it a fretless with 1 MM pup. Then the Wenge fretboard turned to not be hard enough, so I took off the fretboard and turned it into an ebony fretboard lined fretless. I have since found that my two 4 string fretless basses are all I need, so I thought let’s have some fun. So I added the 2nd pickup, replaced the single saddle bridge with a Schaller I had laying around. I did this so I can use the single saddle bridge for my upcoming multi scale 5, and fretted the thing. Since I had holes in the back from the single saddle bridge, I doweled them, and then created a battery cavity. I created a solid integrated finger ramp by routing out the cavity a little larger and creating a wenge insert between the pickups. Result as per the below. It plays and sounds great..... and I can now move on to my next build 😂

I finally heard earlier this week that my local dealer wouldn't be able to get hold of the Eden WTP600 I ordered the day before lockdown last year - great timing there lassie - so I morosely headed over to BD's website to ogle the eye candy.... ...and found they had a nearly new WTP600 for sale... ...which is arriving Monday. Yay!

  16. G&L L2000 USA 4 string bass guitar (1999). Ash body finished in Translucent Blonde with a maple neck/fretboard. Rare. It will be sold complete with it's G&L certificate of authenticity, along with warranty cards, electronics instructions and the original purchase receipt. The foundation of the L-2000 is a pair of G&L Magnetic Field Design humbuckers backed by the flexible Tri-Tone control system, providing the sort of versatility that’ll let you find your tone no matter what kind of bass line you’re laying down. The Tri-Tone system features a trio of mini toggles for pickup selection, series/parallel signal routing and active/passive operation, as well as a trio of knobs for volume, treble and bass. A truly dynamic sounding bass with gorgeous looks & superb playability. Neck: Slender profile hard rock maple neck with black side-dots. Maple fingerboard with black dot inlays. Frets are in great shape with very little wear at all. G&L open-gear tuners are in perfect working condition. 1 5/8" nut width; 34" scale length. Neck is straight & true. Truss rod works perfectly. Body: Contoured, solid ash body finished in Translucent Blonde. Top-loading G&L Saddle-Lock bridge with adjustable saddles. Electronics: Two G&L Magnetic Field Design humbuckers with Tri-Tone control system. 3 mini toggles for pickup selection, series/parallel signal routing & active/passive operation; 3 knurled control knobs for volume, treble & bass. This runs from a 9V battery (i.e. PP3). Due to the age of the instrument there is a very, very small amount of crackle when adjusting the pots, but only when adjusting, I have subsequently used contact cleaner and there's no crackle now, but wanted to state this in the interests of being honest - there is NO crackle when not adjusting the pots. Cosmetically this bass is in (almost) immaculate condition. Which is incredible when you consider it is actually 22 years old. It's an ash body and the grain of the wood looks beautiful through the translucent finish. There are some very, very fine surface scratches on the surface (impossible not to have some surface scratches on any bass that's been played) but the bass has to be viewed from certain angles for these to even be seen. There is also single tiny dent near the strap button on the bottom edge of the bass (detailed in the pictures - it's about as big as one of the screw heads in the bridge) which is only noticeable if you point it out, but other than this - the bass is in excellent condition. Other than these two things, the bas is immaculate. It's a hell of a lot of bass for the money. *The rear battery/electronics cover is signed by Mark King (Level 42) from Ronnie Scotts (Birmingham) back in 2000/01. It has NEVER, EVER been gigged, and it's condition is proof of that. Case: G&L hardshell case included along with one key. It comes from a smoke-free home. So to be clear the bass is not for sale at the moment, I am not averse and will price for cash accordingly, the value shown is for trade purposes. I am ideally looking for a couple of things in trade, Spector Euro (4 or 5), German Warwick (Not chinese, Rockbass or corvette please), 2EQ Stingray. I can also chuck in a Barefaced Supertwin MkIII for the right bass trade. For shipping in the UK, Parcelforce will be used with a cost of £25 GBP. If the buyer wants full insurance, there is an additional £30 charge on top of this. For international deliveries, I will obtain a quote before purchase. Local collection also available & preferable, but facemasks required as per current n-CoV19 protocol!

  18. I'd been playing a few years before them - struggling to hear myself with 50 watt valve amps!! The Carlsboro/HH sounded great but I went into considerable debt over the Acoustic set up - Carlsboro cab plus Acoustic (near 400 watt) plus new Stingray (another source of debt...) sounded pretty well excellent!! (And they all fitted in my Mini 1275 GT)!!! I was in quite decent soul/funk bands at that time having started in rock/blues/prog, and moved via jazz/rock and then jazz funk. The point is in my experience virtually no one stocked them - and if they did, just a couple of packs. In that golden age of bass (bear in mind any Fender in any of the colours available on the right hand version could be had new left handed then - and even then shops were probably 80% guitar), and at a time when we had Wal, Alembic, Musicman, Yamaha, Ibanez, JD fairly new on the scene why would anyone want to effectively neuter their lively bass sound with flats? They also tended to have appalling tension comparatively (even now I will only use things like TI or EB Group 3 or Cobalt for flats - they are similar in tension to rounds). So I suspect in the UK there weren't a lot of packs gathering cob webs at the back of shops. As others have mentioned, a pack of bass strings was a big investment - I for one only changed mine if they were very dead or we were doing something more special like a video with recorded sound or similar - mostly I replaced individual strings as they broke (usually D or G) and you could buy individual bass strings everywhere then. I once had an A go mid gig on my Stingray on a dark stage at a uni I think - getting the string off via the strings through was tough - but trying to play disco without an A string really scrambled my brain Hahahaha!! Only surpassed by the drum stool breaking in about the third song in a set in a night club and the drummer disappearing head first, in reverse with legs in the air over the back of drum riser and stage - and no he didn't have a spare either........ used a chair from the club!! And if you want another sign of the times, one of my group of mate's father was a bit of a hoarder and amongst one source of great mirth amongst us, was him keeping a box of NOS valves 'just in case'!!' These were actually for radios and teles but you get the drift regarding anachronistic and out of date stuff at that time.

  31. Surely this thread is done now? There are two camps here, ‘wood makes a difference on solid bodied instruments’ and ‘wood doesn’t make an appreciable difference on solid bodied instruments’. No one is changing their mind and some folk are getting bent out of shape. Let’s agree to disagree and get on with some actual bass playing. Rant over.

  33. I will try to give my experience and of course it is only my experience. A cabinet with a single driver cannot cover both PA and Bass duties and I feel I am missing something playing through a Barefaced Super Compact. On the other hand these are super lightweight cabinets. Despite the lack of very much signal from bass in the upper reaches, I miss the clarity of a cab with a fuller range. I suspect this is also why some of the better PA cabs have found favour with some bassists. The usual suspects form the QSC, RCF and Yamaha ranges provide a viable bass amp and and also PA tops. They are fitted with Digital Signal Processing and some models have settings for floor and pole mount use. Youh could argue that DSP allows the use of inferior drive units I suspect the three brands mentioned do use DSP for fine tuning the response of quality components rather than getting an "acceptable" sound from poorer drive units. To be honest I would not swap my BC112 Mk3 for a powered PA speaker (at least any I have heard yet) but that being said, despite it being great on the flour it would need some work to make it ideal for pole top use (perhaps @stevie coukd comment here). If I HAD to go for a single solution, to do both jobs I might well go for a decent powered/active PA cab. I suggest you write down a check list of what you need from a PA speaker and what you need from a bass rig. If one solution gives you most of you "like to haves" then go for it.

  34. All fair comment BUT the download route requires someone to operate a bank account with linked PayPal account. I've done this for my own stuff for many years and I don't want to try to run a parallel universe on behalf of a guy who's a great musician but utterly illiterate when it comes to IT. Seriously, he's never owned a PC and when I tried to give him one he turned it down! We've talked it through and decided to wait and see if we get people buying the CDs and then saying "But where's my download?" before we put too much effort into that side of things. This is just a 'toe in the water' to see whether there's any actual demand for CDs at our gigs. In the bottom of my wardrobe I still have a box of 50 vinyl albums (I managed to give away half a dozen to friends and family) that I played on a few years back. Incidentally, as at today 100 CDs with cardboard sleeves would cost £174 whereas 100 CDs in PVC wallets would cost £114. No brainer.

  36. Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe (') and One Size Fits All, you just can't go wrong with them. Hot Rats is spectacular. I'm particularly fond of Absolutely Free and We're Only In It For The Money, from the Mothers stuff. The Beeb put together a decent documentary shortly before he died, well worth watching. I particularly love that, in a one hour documentary, they gave 10 whole minutes to a performance of King Kong, that was a massive inspiration to a band I was in at the time 😂

  37. If you want an acoustic bass I would agree 100% I believe we have established that. For a solid body electric bass with pups and control's the wood is of little importance other than cosmetic.

  38. It's an unbranded Moridaira. This type of silver sticker s/n is exclusive to Moridaira. It's by no means UK exclusive. It's probably early-mid 80s, but it's not 1981, regardless of the numbering. Moridaira serials seem to be 5 or 6 digit, the vast majority are like this - 6-dgit beginning with 8. It's possible they are dateable and that the 8 is the decade (a few 5-figure 7 prefixes have turned up) but the second digit's not the year - there's an example that was bought new in 1984 which starts 86, and the purchaser (yeah, it was me) didn't have a DeLorean at the time... Anyway - these are good. Moridaira is the factory that built MIJ Hohner, their own Morris & HS Anderson brands, Bill Lawrence, MIJ Lotus - and Prince's MadCat Telecaster.

Needs a new preamp, strings and decent set up but was priced to sell accordingly...so could be a while before it gets a full review. @BassBunny - this is the "offending" item (as far as this thread is concerned anyway 😁)
