  1. I've been using my homemade bitsa "Jazz with a P body" for about 3 years. Its got a lovely walnut body which was never massively heavy but I have been wanting a slightly lighter bass recently as I have a back problem. I toyed with getting a new body, or a new bass but I love my bass - everything is exactly as I want it. So a few jumbo forstner drill bits were acquired and drilling began on monday. As well as the holes you see there are also a few more under the scratchplate. It went surprisingly well and I produced a vast amount of walnut shavings. Finished off with a dremel and sandpaper. A quick oil and beeswax finish to the new holes and by tuesday evening I was back in business. Only a 0.2 kg saving, but it all helps and its a manageable 4.0kg now. Personally I think it now looks awesome too !

  2. Yeah, why not? Other hobbies are good. Especially when they don't involve singers, low-life pubs, egos, 1am breakdown and load-ups, unadvertised gigs, unreliable band members, overloud guitarists and drummers, drunks and Hey Joe😉

  3. **SOLD** For sale is a fantastic high end Japanese Ibanez SR1010 with a SOL finish. 4. Not mine, but just back from an Open Mic night with the kids... Eldest (18) has played a couple of times, singing and acoustic guitar. This eve they were joined by my youngest, (14, but passes for 16...) on the Fretless Bass that i got him just last Saturday, 5 Days ago, on which he's has a noodle for an hour or so each day. Proud Dad.

  5. A japanese-made classic that somehow has never flown up in price! It would have cost you £124 in 1981 (seriously: https://westoneguitars.net/scans-1/catalogues-price-lists/1981-catalogue/ ). 41 years later and it's barely more. Most of you will know that Westone is a classic brand of the "made in the same factory as XXXXX" school from Japan in the late 70s and 80s. This is a great "do nearly everything" bass at a low price. It has an active preamp that runs off two (count 'em) 9V batteries, but you can turn it off and run it passive. There's even a "dual tone" switch for putting the P-bass pickup in series or parallel. History - I picked this up last year to fix, from a guy in Crouch End who had forgotten to keep it working! I've replaced the tuners (you can have the three working Westone ones with it), a broken pot, a broken switch, the missing knobs and given it a gentle clean. It's ready to be someone's backup/living room/loaner/gift to a learner/dirty gig bass again. It will never be perfect (the tiny chips and rubs on the finish are its personality) but it will always be damn good. £160 if you meet me in North or Central London to pick it up. I can ship at your expense (and risk!), but obviously a handover is nicer and safer.

  6. **SOLD** For sale is a beautiful vintage high-end Ibanez from the late 80's. Research shows the model number is SR800LE and the serial number reveals it was made in the legendary FujiGen factory Year of Production: September 1987 Serial Number: 42619 Features: Offset Double Cutaway Basswood Body, Bolt-On 3-Piece Maple Neck, 24 Fret Rosewood Fingerboard with Mother of pearl inlays, Gotoh tuners, AccuCast B20 bridge, an active Regulated Lo-Z J-style and an active Regulated Lo-Z P-style Ibanez pickup, Volume / Blend / Bass and Treble EQ controls, black hardware. This bass has a very clear and powerful tone, it's incredibly easy to play and the EQ offers plenty of adjustment options to find your perfect tone. This is the second SR800LE I have owned. The other was used in a different tuning - this one was only used in the standard tuning. Overall the bass is in very good condition, especially for a 35 year old instrument! All electronics work perfectly, as does the truss rod and hardware. There are a few minor dents as you would expect on any used instrument but you have to look closely to find them - see photos The fingerboard has been cleaned and oiled, the frets have been cleaned and polished. All potentiometers have been cleaned with a contact cleaner so they work perfectly. Nice ergonomic and well balanced bass. At just 3.6 kg, it's also pretty light! The bass comes in a Warwick gig bag, packed in a sturdy shipping carton. Shipping to UK £55, EU £25 - cheaper options are available if I detach the neck and the buyer reattaches it upon arrival....

  8. Will obviously supply more pics if any interest. Metal detector sorted so now looking to sell. I've got enough bass guitars for someone who's not in a band so, as I've got into metal detecting and fancy an upgrade, there just might be one of you that has a pro level detector you're not using and fancy a well used, but nice classic Energy 5 string that weighs just around the 8lbs mark. No case but could chuck in a cheap gigbag. The dot markers are real, not stick-ons. Seen some fair usage but great for what I imagine is a 30 year old bass. Super light for a five string, very comfey to wear and play. All pots work, has a new battery compartment. Welcome to come, play, twiddle and decide. Quality biscuit provided with exceptional cup of accompanying coffee. Newly strung with I can't remember strings that were a new spare set I got with another bass. Think they're 40-125s Never appears to go out of tune.

  9. This is my newly acquired Vigier Arpège Delta Metal Fretless from 1981 and bearing number 005. It weights 4.670 kilos, which is quite heavy for my broken back, but I will never sell it as it took me more than 20 years to find one in such a good condition... I bought it from the original owner who acquired it on the 2nd of September 1981 for 6417 French Francs, so the equivalent of todays 2806 Euros, but the official retailing price was 7130 French Francs, so the equivalent of todays 3118 Euros. I received the original invoice, the original user manual in French and the rare charger as these basses were intended to be used with 2 rechargeable 9 Volts batteries, way back in 1981! For those not aware of these Delta Metal fretless basses, the fingerboard is made out of a brass alloy consisting of copper (55%), zinc (41-43%) and iron (1-3%), with the balance consisting of various other metals, called ... Delta Metal and these very early fretless models had factory lines as well as a truss rod! So better photos to come next week... And with all the papers.

  11. Understandable as Ronnie Pou was a made up name of a bass player in a made up band, purely for the purposes of pointing out that saying bassist a. is better or worse than bassist b. is subjective. You may think Gary Willis is a better bassist than Ronnie Pou, I may think Ronnie Pou is a better bassist than Gary Willis, what we are saying is neither of us is right per se. It is only, at best, a subjective expressed opinion and therefore, in analysis, as utterly pointless as any other unmeasurable unquantifiable opinion.

  12. Many years ago when I was a trainee sound recordist I was on "Keeping Up Appearances" for a month as boomswinger. In the evenings in true BBC style everyone would meet up in the bar and get p1ssed up. I got chatting to Geoffrey Hughes (of Eddie Yeats fame) and we discovered a mutual love of whisky, and he'd also brought 2 guitars. So we spent many an evening jammin' away, me on "bass" (i.e. bottom 4 strings of an acoustic) and him strumming drunkenly, there may have been singing involved... Not a bass hero, but a hero nonetheless!

  13. Prime example which is in an almost like new condition, Never been out of my house, so never Gigged, home use only. Reason for sale, one Bass has to go out of three and this one won the Toss, the other two being Fender Mex p and a Yamaha 424x. Collection only , Sorry I won't be posting this, it would break my heart if it got damaged in anyway. The bass is Circa 2017 if the previous owners info was correct when I bought it three years ago. The Bass can be played at my home address .

  16. Prog - oh yes! Long improvs, multiple themes, quiet bits with poetry competing with my baritone sax (sounding like a rhinoceros having an enema) and a cymbal tinkling away- they lapped it up at the jazz club I ran in Oxford at the Cape of Good Hope pub... but no money in it, of course and not popular at the local Working Man's Club More recently I was delighted to find that the guitarist in my current band has solid platinum Prog form - Francis Lickerish was a founder member of The Enid, an ironic symphonic prog band from the early 80s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Enid Since then he's composed two epic symphonic/prog rock albums ('To Wake the King' and 'Far and Forgot') in the Arthurian vein (on YouTube). I asked him why he was in now our covers band. "Keep the fingers flexible, have a bit of a laugh while I complete the third album!" seemed to be a very reasonable explanation...

  21. I'm dipping my toe in the water here. I saw this back in October and was pretty much taken straight away. Went and bought it. It's an amazing bass to play, fantastic range of sounds from the Delano pickups and two band eq with passive option. You'll either love or hate the aesthetics of it. The body is a greatest hits of four of Sandberg's finest finishes. My personal highlight being the heavily distressed Sherwood Green (?) section. The attention to detail is fantastic with the bell plate changing from chrome to gold as appropriate. So in terms of electronics, it's fitted with a pair of Delano pickups, the bridge pickup having a single/dual coil switch. Pull the volume pot out and the preamp is bypassed with the treble control changing to a passive treble roll off. Comes with the original Sandberg gig bag and a comfort strap with Dunlop strap-locks. I love this bass but I think it's just a bit flamboyant for me. I'm used to a Stingray for 5 string jobs and at a gig the other night I took both and the Stingray won out. So I'm testing the water here, not desperate to sell but I'm thinking some one else will suit this better. If anyone wants to trade for a Stingray 5, we might be able to thrash something out. Meet up or collection only I'm afraid, as it has no hard case.

  26. I am pleased that the current management of Epiphone are recreating basses and guitars from their own past catalogues instead of imitations of the Gibson models and a couple of Hofners. Even though they were owned by Gibson since the dawn of time or at least Rock n roll time, they have a heritage of their own which is well worth recreation.

  27. Just put some Elixir rounds on the Squier. They fit fine, no problem winding the E string around the post. I really like my 'stangs. Notice how the body shape has changed over time - the Squier has a more rounded bottom. I think the JMJ is the same; more body behind the bridge. For £300 the Squier is great, the fretwork is fine and needed only a slight fettle, and the tuners are ok, a bit rough but they hold tune well.

  28. I've not posted much on here for some while but I recently acquired a new pedal board and I thought I'd share it. I have a pedaltrain jnr, now redundant, which is a great little board but it was getting a bit cramped. So after looking around I came across the Nux Bumblebee Boards which, with a upper and lower deck, fitted my needs perfectly so in the best BC traditions here a pic. It's about the same width as the jnr but not as deep but as you can see I can place the psu nicely out of the way and should I need to, I can relocate the wireless rx under there too and have room for more pedals. I have to say the Nux is very well made and come in 3 sizes, this one is the middle size. I can throughly recommend them. In conclusion, it's smaller and for what I need I can do more with it..win-win 😊

  29. Having thought long and hard about this, I’ve decided to sell all my gear and first up is a superb SWR Super Redhead 2x10. Condition is excellent having only studio/home use during its lifetime (previous owner bought from new and it never left his house). Everything works as it should and all the controls are smooth with no scratches or bumps. For full specs please see the photos below, which provides details from the Owners Manual. I’m based in the North West between Lancaster and Kendal but do travel down to the Bolton area regularly, so could meet up around there. This is no lightweight at 36kg so would rather no ship this.

  37. We used to sell collectable on feebay some years ago. Sent them all over the world. We stopped because of the thieves among the buyers. Didn't get it, doesn't fit, the box was empty, it arrived broken (here is a photo of the broken one I already had) E bay and pay pal always favored the buyer which is pretty dumb as buyers never pay fees. Dogs and hands that feed come to mind but they are too stupid to see it. They are killing their own business and taking many other little sellers down with them. We gave up on them Good riddance!

  38. What do you do when you want to make one of your G&L's even more brutal? String it BEAD 🤣 If you couldn't use all its power before you certainly can't afterwards. Wimpish rubbish of course you can. I have wanted to experiment with bead for some while because I don't tend to use the g string on my 5 strings very much. So I've been looking for a cheap victim bass to do it to. Yesterday I woke up to the fact that I don't need another bass for this but what can I use. Something strong and powerful with big tone. It took me a long time to decide between my Blueburst and my clear coat orange. Blueburst is I believe ash over alder and weighs about 9lb 5 oz. Clear coat orange is solid ash and weighs 10lb 7 oz Not that heavy once you are wearing it on a 4 1/2 " Lekato strap. My 5 string clear coat is 12 lbs 2ozs including its strap. Anyway orange won and is so strong it didn't even need a setup afterwards. Lovely great big noise. I'm back in love with it.

  39. I have found myself leaning to the Wal-ish too. Other bass players I have had come over who have listened to it say they love the sound. I’m pretty happy with what I have achieved in it so far. I haven’t even demo’d single coil mode, which is really cool sounding. I’ll have to do it some time. However, I appreciate what the Wal does, and now I’m starting to understand the design elements better over time, I also appreciate how far ahead of its time it was too. If I can get nearer it sonically, I think it would be very cool. And I’m certain it’s possible, as I continue working with Chris Turner and others behind the scenes. It’s probably only become economically viable to consider a ‘Wal-ish’ as a proposition since Wal prices have gone up so stratospherically and the wait list is so long. But here I am, right place right time, so let’s do this…

  40. Haven't read through the thread as yet but just noticed Tim Quy from Cardiacs passed away yesterday. Such a shame about both Tims (band leader Tim Smith died in 2020 after a long illness). I saw them in the tiny Herne Hill Half Moon as a kid in 86/88 and they blew my brains out. Such an incredible band and probably my preferred variant in the prog rock arena. Amazing.

  45. The other less destructive way to the body would be to pots with a longer threaded part. That way you could still mount them through the body without widening the holes, then put the retaining nuts on the outside of the chrome control plate. If you can find the right length pots, and are happy soldering.

Then ten minutes later he came up to me, called me by my name and introduced me to Geddy Lee’s nephew! I felt special.

  47. So this is the board currently. A lot of new pedals I haven't tried in the rehearsal room yet: the OC5, MBD2, 420 Fuzz, BF2 and DD3 (so nearly all of them then...) Had most of the Darkglass preamps (B7K, ADAM, AOU, Photon) before, then got the Bass Butler. Sold it, tried a few more (including multifx) and realised that the Bass Butler really is the sound I was looking for. Just sounds brilliant, and the extra distortion stage comes in handy. I also just like buying and trying different pedals. 😅 Had an HX Stomp and just got frustrated with the menus, didn't have the patience for it. Love the simplicity of the BB. Really looking forward to pairing it with the MBD2 and the 420. I kind of know what to expect from the BF2 and the delay, but interested to hear how the MBD2 and 420 work in a real space.

  48. I’ve met a few heroes over the years and been lucky that they were all pleasant and easy to get on with. For example, I’ve been presented with guitars that I won in competitions by bot Steve Howe and Gordon Giltrap - two of my three favourite guitar players (never met Gary Moore). Got to know Gordon over the years; such a lovely guy. But my most treasured hero moment was meeting Phil Lynott after a gig at the Cornwall Coliseum on their farewell tour in 1983. After the 83, as usual, I was hanging around in the empty hall waiting for my dad to pick me up (it was a 25 minute drive from home) and watching the crew breaking down the gear. Phil wandered out on stage (a little wobbly) carrying a huge, half finished vodka bottle. He spotted me standing in the middle of the empty auditorium and shouted over, asking if everything was OK. I said “Sure, just waiting for my dad, and watching the crew break down. It’s alright, he’ll be here in about a quarter of an hour.” So he said, “Well come up here and we’ll wait.” I climbed over the barrier and he and a roadie helped me up onto the stage. So we spent the next 15 or 20 minutes sitting on Brian’s drum riser just chatting until my dad turned up. Of course I asked him if he was really splitting up the band and if he had plans for what he’d do next. The answer to the first was, of course, “Yes.” And the second just got a wink, a tap of the finger on the side of the nose and “I’ve got a few ideas!” Then we sat here just shooting the breeze with our legs dangling off the riser. At one point he accidentally kicked my leg as he was swinging his legs and spent a couple of minutes apologising profusely in the way only happily tipsy people can do. At one point Scott poked his head out, spotted us and quickly retreated backstage. Eventually dad showed up at the other end of the hall and I jumped down to get my lift home. We exchanged a little wave as I went out the rear doors and he wandered back stage. What a lovely guy he was!
