  1. Yesterday, I got my third Spector Forte. After #168 (Vintage Tint Ash) and #194 (Trans Satin Black), now #198 (Gloss Black). It comes with EMG PJ pickups and the Haz 9V preamp. It pretty much is a no-frills NS-2. Only differences: no inlays and alder instead of maple wings. Great looks and sounds for the early AIC and Queensrÿche vibes 😎

  2. Over the last few years I have had reasonable success building a handful of small valve amps. I do miss the Ampeg PF-50T that I sold on to purchase an EBS, so the time is right to start possibly my most ambitious scratch build yet. I previously enquired in this thread as to what version of B15 to go for, and I have settled on something close to a single-channel version of the Heritage model (i.e. switchable between 25W cathode bias and 30W grid bias), working from the Ceriatone 'Aunt Peg' layout. Most of my previous builds have leant heavily on recycling old parts, but this time I am going for quality new parts. I have neither skills nor tools to tackle woodwork, so I am going for a Hammond 'birdcage' style housing. When assembled it is about 12in wide x 10in deep x 7in tall. The transformers (on order from Primary Windings) and valves will all stand up within the mesh cage (proportions not the same as shown here): Wish me luck!

  5. I have no doubt that these sound different to someone with superb hearing, but to me they all sound pretty much the same. Seriously. I'm listening through decent studio monitors at sensible volume levels, and I suppose there's a very slight tonal variation, but nowhere near enough to make me prefer one of these basses to another. I have reasonably bad tinnitus which interferes with my hearing of high frequencies, but not the mids and lows. Put that guy playing those basses in a band situation and I doubt if anyone could possibly hear a difference between them. As always with these demos, they've chosen an immensely talented bass player who thinks that he's there to show how quickly he can play lots of notes. There's no actual law that says you can't demo basses by playing a simple walking bassline that allows the listener to concentrate on what the video is supposed to be about.

  6. Mariah Carey. Twenty seven different notes in every single word. I have a theory that they sing like this to avoid holding any note long enough for you to hear that they're never actually hitting the right notes.

  10. The extra B stands for birthday! On Tuesday I turned 40. I now find myself wondering where my pills are and despairing about the music my children listen to. But I digress. A couple of months ago, my long-suffering wife told me she wanted to buy me a bass for my birthday, and was there anything in particular I wanted. I initially tried to put her off as this wasn't going to be cheap, but she insisted! After some thought I narrowed it down to a bass I'd never owned but always wanted ever since playing a friend's on tour many many years ago. As luck would have it there was one for sale on here just at the right time, courtesy of @vincbt It's been living in a cupboard for the past fortnight but here it is!

  15. Ok, this thing is a beast and sounds killer with the Noble but needs must, gigs are around the corner and the CTM300 will be my go to. Bought from @owen a little while ago using probably the best sale ad ever ( see below ).   16. Hi everyone! I have a Wal Mk2 5-String, that is living in the closet most of the time, so I’m considering to let it go, although it’s hard with such a beautiful instrument. The body is made of Brazilian mahogany and the facings of African shedua, so it Iooks pretty awesome. It was born in August 1987, and it’s still in a really good shape for its age. It has the usual dents and scratches. I tried to document the major ones on the photos, like the scratches on the front and the bumps on the headstock - the classic one on the top of the headstock and another one on the back of it. The damages are only cosmetic and have no negative impact on the playability, sound or function of the bass. The bass sounds and plays great. It has been to the luthier recently, so it’s professionally set up and strung with new Dunlop 45-125 strings. The frets have been serviced as well, so they are as new. The weight is ca. 5,2 kg. I don’t have the original Wal case. The bass is located in Germany / Munich. The best would be to see and to try it before buying, but most of prospective buyers will not have this opportunity, so I’m prepared to ship it. I know it got more complicated and also more expensive now for Buyers from UK and vice versa due to the VAT issues. Therefore, I assume the bass will rather find somebody in the EU, but who knows Money is important, but an easy and smooth transaction as well. I’m not so much interested in trades as the only other basses I really love are the ones from Status (preferably S2 or S3). So, in case you have a spare one you can try

  18. I’ve wanted another Lakland Precision since I sold my last US 44-64 (I was’t keen on the sunburst), when this got listed, I was instantly into the Black/Black/Maple rock vibe. As such, this will be wearing La Bella RX Steels when I get round to changing them. It currently has an EMG Geezer Butler pickup in it, however I’ll be putting the original Lakland p’up back in as I really liked it on my previous 44-64. This joins my US 44-94 custom, 55-01 & Skyline DJ5 in my current stable.

For the complete transcription in July ’05, Watson told BP he recorded three Rod Temperton tunes during his Off the Wall session. All of these were recut by Louis Johnson, with only “Rock With You” making the album. “Engineer Bruce Swedien told me later that Louis played a tighter bass part, but it lost the magic. He said, ‘Man, we pulled up that “Rock With You” track and we had to keep your bass. You were pumpin’ it! We took out your bass and the whole song died. Your bass made the tune.’ That made me feel really good.”

  28. Strictly speaking this arrived yesterday, but I spent all day either in (virtual) meetings or annoying the neighbours with badly played Faith No More. So here it is. ACG TKO Classic - a non-standard model with a new finish Alan’s not done before - I think we can all agree he has done a bloody marvellous job. This was commissioned with a little inheritance I received following my final grandparent dying last year, and arrived two days after a good friend from Univeristy - who was a sometime-luthier - took his own life. He would have loved what Alan has created here and I will cherish it for both the memory of all my grandparents and Kieran. Not to mention cherish it because it is so damn good to look at and sounds exactly as I wanted - big, ballsy and huge but with a nice soft politeness if you wish. Limba body with an ash top, ash neck, rocklite board. 30.5” scale. Passive electronics volume/tone/pickup select including series and parallel options. Single coil in bridge, reverse P in neck.   29. On PR a track by Smith/Kotzen has just been on. It's not a bad tune and Adrian Smith's vocals are fine but Ritchie Kotzen rivals Glenn Hughes for that bombastic/histrionic way of over-singing, which has me diving for the off button. Of course, pop's chock full of divas who over-sing like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and so on but I choose not to listen to whatever stations play that stuff. Trouble is there are loads of rock vocalists who sing/sang this way like the bloke in Queensryche and RJ Dio. Just wondering where the BC massive is on this. I expect many will disagree but I won't cry.

  31. How do you tell at what point an instrument has been set up? I bought a skinny stringer from Guitar Guitar a couple of weeks ago. It arrived well set up (the intonation isn't perfect but it's close enough that I haven't got round to tweaking it yet) but in that price bracket I'd expect it to leave the factory like that so I have no way of telling if GG did any work.

  32. I rather think that we're at cross-purposes here. I can see the 'Accept' button, and may even be inclined to press it, but I believe it to be deontologically correct to have, equally visible, the alternative 'Refuse' button. I don't see such a button, and when I access the 'Cookie Policy' jungle, I get page after scrolled page of waffle, all of which masks the choice (if indeed there even is one in there...) of refusing. I do realise that sites, blogs and the like have to get revenue from somewhere, and I'm not against that. It's the sneakiness that I object to, that's all. Hope this helps.

Hubby's a busy man, so I've been tasked with posting a few pics, before it all becomes utterly obsolete. 😉 It's a unique, 5-string semi-acoustic bass that Umut Dal created for Jack to his own specification. It has a stereo output and two pickups (piezo and magnetic) which can be blended into an amp through a splitter cable. These images are from my own 'propa photoshewt'. Jack prefers the natural, non-photoshopped look, but I found that I needed to get rid of as many of the harsh shadows as possible, at least from the background. Many, many more photos HERE.

  35. Photos of the BB350 MoJo linked to on the previous page. It's full of dings & dents & it was so dirty it could have classified as a bio hazard (especially the frets & fretboard) but I've begun putting it right. Somehow the truss rod had come out of alignment with the nut being right up against the fretboard side of the hole. This pretty much rendered it useless so to remedy it I just took the nut off & added a washer to keep it central & the result is a nice straight neck & decent enough action. One of the tuners is a bit clunky & the pots need cleaning but I'll get to that tomorrow. Cheers to MoJo for the link!

  38. It's impedance, and 6.5 ohms is the minimum, not the nominal. Assuming he wired them parallel the cab would be a nominal 4 ohms impedance. The Beyma SM212 is a very good driver, a considerable step up from the average.

  41. Just make 'em up yourself and save money. It's dead easy. No soldering needed and the screw terminals are clearly marked so you can't go wrong if you take a bit of care. Use proper Neutrik Speakons and decent cable - something like Van Damme or Sommer - and away you go.
