That new neck is an absolute delight. Fantastically easy to play, far more comfortable than the original Mike Lull profile (I've been playing this bass very happily for 10 years), and looks as cool as {expletive deleted}. Craftsmanship of the highest order. 🧐7 points

As of 12:35 today I am now an Epiphone Embassy owner 🙂 Sadly shifts spent clambering up and down scaffolding leave me a bit knackered these days so all you folks will get is a photo. Well a photo and a promise , those bloody roundwound strings are coming off ASAP 😄6 points

Well, all the bits have arrived and been handed over to the guy who does my bits and pieces and he is going to make a start on it next week. Going to treat it to a new pickguard and 4 of these Ric-style jaunty, labelled knobs - treble/bass and volume/tone so I don't forget which one does what Plus a fat toggle pickup selector switch. It won't look exactly like a Ric and I don't suppose it will sound exactly like a Ric but near enough to keep me happy - plus it is going to cost me under £375 all in, which isn't exactly like a Ric, either. I'm allowing myself to get a bit excited about this Pics will be posted when done.6 points

I did a little clip, absolute crap but you get the picture. This is high mode, gain on 4, peak on 6, drive up. Playing Stingray. You'll (hopefully) notice that even in this mode, the peaks are really nice sounding and not harsh at all. And the lows never get boomy or indistinct. I have been gassing for a Kiloton Tribute on and off for a few years, I was put off in the past by tales of boat anchor weight and the colours; brown or white, which I wasn't so keen on. Now G&L have started selling them in colours I like. @Jonesy lives in the next borough along from me and he invited me round to his to try out his new G&L SB2 Tribute. Thanks mate👍. I wasn't so keen on the SB2 but I could see that it was well made considering the price and wasn't heavy. @OllyW also confirmed in another G&L thread here that his Kiloton wasn't heavy. So I took a punt and ordered online. I've never had a bass delivered before, I always wanted to try them out first but I didn't want to spend a day (and spend on diesel) driving down to Guilford for a £379 bass. My first impressions are: I love the tones you can get from it. I've been mainly playing it with the toggle switch in the middle, which I believe is single coil (?) with the tone and volume on max. It has the barky sound you would expect from a bass with a single bridge humbucker but the E string has a depth and authority I'm very pleased with. I really love it but its new so I will see how I feel about it in a few weeks but this feels like a keeper.4 points

As per title. £650 collected from Darlington with hard case, £620 with no case or gig bag. A Fender Precision bass, Made in Japan by people in a factory putting bits of wood, plastic & metal together. Sounds like a Precision. Weight 9lb 5oz. New Dunlop Superbrights 40 to 100 New black scratchplate custom made by Bass Doc to give it a more 70's look. Original white plate included. I voted "No" purely based on my own experience. I've tried a few multi scale basses now, and I've found the low B to be no better than a well made regular bass, I expect if you analysed the differences you'd see something, but for the most part, I was left feeling a bit meh. I've also found the lower range of the bass tends to overpower the upper. To quote a bass player I spoke with on the subject, who shall not be named, "my 6 string Dingwall was the best 3 string bass I've ever had". EDIT, I forgot to add, I was impressed with how little adjustment was required to get used to it however. I've heard that a lot and didn't believe it till I tried one. Still not for me though...4 points

UPDATE: I built my workbench last weekend! I went for something pretty standard as I wasn't hugely confident in what I was doing. It is a bit of a whopper length-wise, around 8ft but this was because I had the space and it was the standard length of the ply top - so minimal cutting to size. The height and depth are pretty standard (90cm and 62cm respectively). I am very pleased with it though, just need to add a couple of vices! Thanks everyone for your ideas and advice4 points

More of an assembly job than a build, but anyway... I have an old ESP 51-style Precision, single coil pickup with a slab top. I love the fat, farty sound out of it, but I need a forearm contour and I'm much happier with a J-sized neck. Last year, I ordered a 54-style ash body in trans-white (the Mary Kaye finish) from Warmoth which has been waiting for an accomplice. Today, the postie delivered the neck, ordered from Warmoth late last year - roasted maple, Jazz nut width, tele headstock, side-dots only with banjo frets. The smell of the roasted neck is utterly delicious 😂 Anyway, I'm thinking a humbucking old-style P pickup is the way forward, rather than a proper single-coil and, perhaps, a serial/parallel option via a push/pull volume knob could be very interesting. A Cabronita style scratchplate in mint could be very tasty, too. I'll go with something a little sturdier than the original early-50's style bridge and, of course, it won't be strung through the body anyway. I'm undecided whether to add a bridge cover or not. I think a pickup cover would just get in the way. I have some parts but need to get more before I can really start putting it all together, but this is the starting point.3 points

For sale is my Wal MkII 5-string in a black gloss finish with gold hardware and an ebony fingerboard. Made in 1991, it's in excellent condition despite the fact it's now approaching its 31st birthday, the only significant wear and tear in three decades being a chip out of the poly finish on the very tip of the headstock. It's sporting a custom scratchplate that Kim at Charlie Chandlers made for it, but I understand it's held in place by the truss rod 'boat', so can be removed. Kim also did a full refret and PLEK last year, and it plays like a dream. A new set of D'Addario EXL-170 nickels have just been fitted. The tuners were replaced with Schaller M4S lightweights, but the original Schaller tuners are also included in the sale. At 4.9kg, it's not too heavy as Wals go, and balances very well on the knee or a strap. It comes complete with the original blue/grey case, fully functional with all catches working, and it even has a key! If you look closely you should be able to see the metal-handled allen key that the earliest Wals came with also in the case, although this originated from an older MkII I owned a few years ago. I'm not too keen to ship it for obvious reasons, so collection is preferred, but I can box it up securely and ship it (fully insured) at the buyer's cost and risk if picking it up is not possible. I got some rough costs from UPS for this, and within the UK would be approximately £125, USA and elsewhere £250+ (plus import duties and taxes payable in the destination country). I'm moving on an Aguilar AG500SC head. It's in brown with a tweed sleeve. Both in reasonable condition with a few niks and scuffs illustrated in the photos. Serviced by uk distributer Barnes & Mullins in 2020. Great head, but I just don't need it anymore. Happy to answer any questions. Happy to post at buyers expense.3 points -
Made this in a whim as I got into a debate about whether it was the best bass fuzz in the world. I still reckon it’s a close second to the coloursound bass fuzz, so I’m offering it up for sale. Gated octave fuzz with clean blend and toggle switches for harmonics and filter. I managed to source original specc’ed transistors and transformer, so it’s as close as you’ll get without paying £200 for one. no Velcro on the back, and a delightful (but not too bright) blue indicator LED. sold.3 points -

Interesting, you are right, its not possible to fix what we dont know about, but, if its a staff member who is dis-interested/not giving you the service, and they are the only person in the shop who do you complain to? To my knowledge there isnt another bass forum which has such a UK based population, and there arent many bass specific stores in the UK. If I owned one, I'd be all over the forum checking what people were saying about my business. I'd think if Bass Direct are unaware of the feeling on here from some people its a major blunder on their part. Likewise if they are aware and not willing to do anything to remedy the issues, its not a great long term business model in my view. I'll still use them, but I do check other places before making a purchase. Jonny3 points

I’ve always wanted to try a Maurad Marc , I happened upon this one on Reverb and the seller was only 30mins drive away ! This is the first Leduc bass I’ve managed to find in the uk ( they usually come from the Belgian , German , UK triangle - courtesy of Tony & Christoph ) Sadly I couldn’t find any more , if there was I would’ve bought more 🤦♂️😂 If you see one don’t hesitate ( just a killer bass ) as most Leduc’s are!3 points

…. So after buying a superb secondhand Vigier Excess 5 from Mattbass6 on this forum, I realised I’m not such an intuitive 5 string player and sold it on vowing that I would get another Vigier. Being simply blown away by the craftsmanship I had to get a 4 string. One pilgrimage to Bass Direct in Warwick (thanks Ashley and Mark) later, I am the proud owner of this beauty… My goodness it’s fast, punchy, modern and I love it! 😊2 points

Finally the workshop is up and running so I can resume building this is the first of 4 basses that is in the pipeline (the others are the P-Rick, 5 string fenderbird and I'm remaking the body on my jaguar bass also I'm doing 2 guitars a Jagcaster and a firecaster! I'm making up for lost time!! ) The body blank is gluing up at the mo so not much to report as yet but its going to be in the style of a '51 p bass but very rustic looking The body is going to be made out if an old floor joist that has just been ripped out of a local church hall thats being renovated The neck is an old black neck I had kicking about from another build the headstock is going to be reshaped into a tele bass style........ 👍🏻2 points

One week ago I made a round trip of almost 600km in a snowstorm and came home with this. It's my third DB in 4 years and it's what I should have bought the first time right after I got home from the 2018 BC Double Bass Bash. This is a Shen SB100 laminate bass AND an Acoustic Image Coda combo with the Clarus Series 4 Plus amp, both are about 10 years old and in mint condition. I am loving this combination and the Spirocores and I'm getting used to the set up on the bass and having fun learning about the amp. I would highly recommend both of these. It is a bit of a silly purchase because we are in another lockdown since Christmas in Ontario and both of my bands have stopped rehearsing and we have no gigs on the horizon, basically all venues are shut down but I figured that at 75 I might as well get what I wanted and hope that when things finally start up again I will be ready to go with really good equipment. I play every day and am very pleased with this bass and amp...look out world! 👍😄2 points

Interested in trades for a 4 String Jazz bass or player series Jaguar bass Never thought I would do this but am now looking for a new home for my BB 424x. I've had it a good few years and it's seen off all the competition from my other basses, Stingrays Ibanez SR series, Jazz basses and many others. This thing has just slotted in perfectly for gigs ranging from dodgy boozers to festivals. I have recorded with it and again it sounded awesome. Reason i am selling all my Yamaha's is I've just fallen for the look and simplicity of a precision. This has brand new D'Addario 45-105 Nickel wounds on. The fretboard a has just been oiled and its ready to gig. Nice low action. Everything works as it should. Collection from Huyton, Liverpool or meet up in the North West. With tears in my heart I am offering this exceptional bass because I am not able to manage 7 strings properly. I haven't seen any MD7 in the past 20 years here in Europe - and these basses are not offered anymore according to the website of Ken. Even more rare is the 7-string with the 7pc neck option together with the 5A Flamed Maple Top. This particular bass is shown as a Flamed Maple showcase on Kens website since decades. I imported the bass from the original US owner, who kept this bass in the case since he bought it. It is ABSOLUTELY MINT. The action is super low, the sound is incredible deep and crystal clear, yet providing that organic snap exclusive to Smiths . Everything works fine. Asking 7.500 Euro plus shipping from Duesseldorf/Germany. I could be intersted in trades but only at reasonable trade values and against these brands: Ken Smith Elite Fodera Neckthrough Alleva Coppolo F Bass Fenders <1966 + cash either way if necessary. Must 'fess that I had my head turned by a Cort bass very recently. I'd always been slightly put off by their budget pups, but this A5 Ultra Ash model launched last year sports Fishman Fluence pups, which is getting a lot of Spector owners excited given its recent appearance on higher end Spector bass ranges. Thanks! When I wired up the workshop I looked up what a ‘standard’ dimension for a workbench would be and set the sockets a bit higher than that. Thankfully it worked out OK. Cheers for the tip, funnily enough I actually have some leftover ply from when I boarded up the workshop so I can cut that down and put it on there without too much trouble.2 points

After a bit of time playing them, I'm really enjoying flats. The smooth slideyness is really comfortable to play. It's not a sound that would work for everything, but it sits well when the bass is required to be supportive rather than up front.2 points
