Two great gigs for us this week. First at Billingham Forum which is always a great place to play with the audience well up for having a good time. Then down to Burnley Mechanics, which despite the tricky load in is another one of those venues that is guaranteed to be a good night. Capacity audiences again defying current financial woes. Nice to have both of our cellists back with us, really does make a difference. We're having some time off in May, then back in June and July with a vengeance - our usual dates supplemented by some rescheduled ones due to recent band health issues, so looks like a very busy summer.

Another month, another working men's club. This was very Phoenix Nights. We all made some heinous mistakes during the first set, bit we were on it for the second and encores, so it ended up being a good night. I got some great compliments on my playing and tone, and I'm loving this setup with the ABM Evo IV, Two10S and V7. One (admittedly quite inebriated) chap even declared me to be the best bass player he's ever heard with the exception of John Entwistle, which I'll take! 🤣 And the most attractive woman there by several hundred miles made a point of saying thank you to me for us putting on a great show, so that was just the cherry on the icing on the cake. The only downside was not getting home until 12.30am, not getting to sleep until 2, but then having to be up at 6.30 to hand off @Merton's broken amp to his sister. Fortunately Mrs Greg let me have a lie in until 10.30, so a good start to my long weekend.

Last night's gig was in a tiny venue - the Three Horseshoes in Charlbury. The scroll of my bass was a couple of inches under the ceiling and it had to stay in place, held upright, during the interval as there was nowhere to put it down. The rooms were very cramped as well. Good gig, though - the audience appeared very pleased with the music. I was also incredibly lucky and found a large parking space right outside the front door of the pub. Though the band advertises as jazz the BL wants material that is easier on the general public's ear and so it tends to involve quite a few long grooves with obvious blues or reggae influence.

Good gig last night in the Butchers Arms in Inverurie. Three quarters of the band had been absolutely full of the cold in the run up to last night, it was very much a case of kill or cure. I only started feeling more like myself the day before. Poor singer - he was really feeling it, high notes were an issue despite warming up and Vocalzone lozenges so we skipped a few he felt he wouldn't be able to do and juggled the set around a bit. It was a really cool audience though - they could see that he was struggling but powering through and not only appreciated the effort but really stepped in with the singing along on quite a few songs. Made it to the end, and I even got a couple of compliments on my playing - always nice to hear. Singer sounded like a frog afterwards, poor guy. Thankfully we've got a month off from gigs now so plenty recovery time. Weapon of choice last night: Reverend Triad. Even remembered to flex those series muscles a couple of times from the Freeway switch I wired in.

I was 17 in 1963. We formed a band for a school dance. Now 77 and still gig occasionally.

I bought the StingRay fretless with a view to seeing if it could oust my passive G&L JB-2 fretless. (I only want to keep the one fretless) I've owned a couple of Musicman fretless basses in the past and they are wonderful, it was just hard justifying keeping it when it cost me almost twice what the USA made G&L did. One thing about the MM is that I really loved the mid control on the fretless. I've tended to prefer 2EQ on fretted StingRays but the 3EQ was great on a fretless. Nothing that couldn't be adjusted for on your amp but with a fretless, better having it on the bass making it feel that bit more intuitive imo

I bought this back recently as I realised how ungentlemanly I had become.

Apart from there being absolutely no reason to, you'd be at it forever. You have the pencil and template, mark outline on the back of the peghead. Take a pullsaw or hacksaw and cut away the meaty bits, don't try and cut curves; just a series of straight cuts getting closer to the outline. Clean away the peaks with a flat file then sandpaper smooth. Whole task takes about 15 minutes.

Thought I would add my late thought on this topic.. I have had three NT4 thumb basses over the years..I now have a January 1990 NT4. Very comfortable and slim neck, weight of a small country 4.8 Kg (lol) Wenge/Bubinga. Transitional stage..old school back plate and dots on the wenge fretboard, but not scalloped on back of the headstock for the Schaller tuners..EMG replacement pickups for the original EMG's like for like. MEC preamp. One for sale at Bassbros at the moment. I have owned this Thumb for 5 years now, and have had not had to adjust the neck once! The most stable trusrod neck I have ever owned. I find the wonderful contoured body on the bass now works quite well with my 57 year old contoured belly (lol) The 89 I owned I deeply regret selling! This 1990 equally comparable.. 1997 version..just nowhere as good, neck profile broader, the Warwick fundamental thump no longer there.. If in the lucky position to own an NT4 Thumb, I personally recommend buying an older version..That said I don't know what the new ones are like, bar very expensive. ps If played through an old school Trace Elliot the bass sings!!

We took our Bandeoke show to the Blue Lagoon in Bristol last night. First time there, and sadly a very quiet night. However those who were there couldn't have been more enthusiastic, one young woman even came up and gave us a 20 quid tip! The dearth of punters meant we basically played a two hour request show. I used my new HB 25th anniversary bass, Bugera Veyron into Barefaced Compact and jolly good it all was too. Just after we had finished the pack down a rugby team walked in. If only they'd been an hour earlier....

21. 2 years after I first started learning. The Magnificent Flying Sorcerers - original band playing Welsh flamenco cocktail jazz with a reggae twist. Dressed as little grey aliens in boiler suits. Except we were all tall and painted blue. With halved ping pong ball eyes held on with elastic that slowly tried to suck out our eyeballs as the set progressed. I still can't fathom why we didn't make it.

A small update. After playing it quite a bit at home, in rehearsal and live, as much as the ability to blend in some bridge pickup is nice, I'm not sure that anyone would really notice it in the mix and that neck pickup is so nice on its own and way more pokey than the bridge, that the blend is somehow less. To this end, today, I disconnected the bridge pickup completely and have left the blend pot in as a volume control (it's a better quality pot than the original I think and the same value). It is instantly less noisy when you're not earthing it with your hands and I can just enjoy playing the neck pickup, which, unsurprisingly, roars like any P bass, but in a smaller, more quirky package.

Thursday 29th May 2008 in Kilburn with a scratch band put together by the Weekend Warriors program. I was 51, having picked up a bass for the first time on my 49th birthday. In the 15 years since then, I've played just short of 500 gigs. Why do you think I'm Happy Jack?

One thing I don't get about the flat vs round debate is the thing about flats lasting longer. I mean when rounds get old they sound like flats to me. So, with that in mind, what's the difference between an old round set and an old flat set other than feel and cost of purchase?

So I just put together a bass for a guy (really good player) who has owned a lot of Wals, including one of the first double-necks. He confirmed that my treble filter is too low, so I made up a prototype for him that just stays above the filter peaks. I thought it sounded thin until he played it (he exclaimed "there it is..!"). It really adds something without being in your face. So I'm going to update the filter I think. So it confirms that the 6k-ish HPF is the way to go for a Wal sound.

Anyone else think Loris is a little under appreciated? He is one hell of a player This is old school class - for someone who looks like they are just about to go skiing...,

The mob that attacked the capitol on January 6th last year were waving confederate flags and chanting "USA, USA". I think they must have missed the point of the civil war.

Bit of a tidy up and change around for me. This board gives me two signal paths, one to foh and one to IEMs with amp sim. The IEM feed can also run out to to my 2x Headrush 112s without cab sim if I need it to. I di from the Qstrip with a low cut to foh, but can also di direct from the zoom if I’m using the Headrush set up. The horse eq and sparrow di are there purely for the single Royal Blood song in our set. My custom guitar/headphone cable is visible on the right. Under the board there are two power supplies, one is purely redundant in case of an issue with #1.

Presumably the "short scale bass" would be one with a 35" scale.

I just updated my HX Stomp with 3.60 and HX Edit and had no problems.

I had a Yamaha BBG5S which fits all the criteria apart from possibly the weight. Absolutely fantastic bass for not very much money. I'm sure there's other Yamahas that fit the bill too.

It looks genuine. I have one currently. The two I had previously I gave to the CEO at strings'n'things who are the UK importers of MM in recognition of their generous donations to the Herts Bash.

It did indeed arrive! Fairly amazed considering I paid the last but off less than 24 hours ago. Credit to Richtone Music and DPD! Looks to be in excellent condition and actually set up very well for once! A tiny bit of fret buzz on the D string at the 10th fret but I'm fairly confident I can get rid of that in short order. All in, happy bunny!

Thanks again for the advice! I'm pleased to report I got new Daddario Helicore Pizzicato (3/4 medium tension) and the bass has 4 strings again now 👍👍 The helicore are totally the same as what were on before, great spot and good knowledge in the links, thankyou!

Basslab doubleneck 5-string headless fretted + fretless. To see what the necks were like - if they were nice, I'd like one with parallel necks and the fretless on top. I'd also like to try a Ritter Roya 5-string.

The neck plate came today. I’m just waiting on the pu’s and the nut. The first nut I received was a little disheartening…
