  3. Always a good sign when it's time to order the strings First final finish coat on. Knobs are probably not in their final positions (no holes will be drilled until the final finish is finally finished ). For a tru-oil light gloss (and most other finishes, to be honest) I start in the same place - a good old 'slurry and buff': Told you it's going to look pretty The bone nut has arrived. Always a relief that I've cut the neck the right width! : And the luminlays have sanded up nicely: Still to do while the finish is being sorted is the truss-rod cover and the hatch rebate strips, and I have the jack/jackplate and pots to source, but there is now plenty of 'waiting for it to dry hard' time to do those sorts of things

  4. Ah - the old 'Razzle Dazzle' camouflage trick: Look into my eyes Have you ever seen a bass as beautiful as this? No you haven't. No You haven't.

  5. Based on the last bash, if you bring a +1 they will win top prize in the raffle 😁. I still have that transcript of Moondance, and I intend to put it back into the raffle. But this time autographed and dated, thus starting a tradition, so that 20 bashes later it will appear on the antiques road show. Or Crimewatch.

  6. All done, finally. Kept going with the oil, then finished with a few coats of renaissance wax. I added indicators to the wooden knobs with a bit of cocktail stick. The guitarist had given me some Seymour Duncans to install in place of the original PRS pickups, so had to re-jig the wiring, but that went OK - the single coil settings on the push/pull knob sound decent, and the volume is pretty even whichever pickup(s) are selected, so job done!

  7. Found a twin brother of my fretless Pro yesterday...a great sight to see.

  8. Haven't seen much in the way of disrespect, just expressions of love it/hate it and of course, pointing out how metal (sometimes ironically but not always!) becomes a parody of itself... I see far more vitriol toward rap (which also suffers from the same same-ness and occasional daftitude)! Just shows how one man's "hey that's awesome in the truest sense of the word!" is another's "wtf is that awful racket, kids nowadays don't know how to make music" etc...

  9. I've tried making knobs a few different ways, but this is probably the most successful method of the ones I've tried. I part-cut the bottom wood using a diamond pipe-drill: Then create the relief for the pot nut with a 15mm Forstner: Then the hole for the spindle insert: And now I have all the concentric holes done, I can re-fit the pipe-drill and finish the cut: Next is the hole for screwdriver access to the insert grub screw: And now I can (carefully) press-fit the spindle insert, lining up the grub screw with the drilled hole: Then I cut the purpleheart and ebony discs with the pipe-drill: Glued and clamped: Next is installing the luminlay dots: And finally, using a 6mm drill in the insert as a mandrel, a quick sanding and oiling:

  10. ...but you're no Tony Levin with a Baby Bass through a Portaflex with a curly lead, sporting sideys, Burt Reynolds tash, a short sleeve turtle neck and medallion. (happy birthday TLev recently. Image borrowed from https://tonylevin.com/road-diaries/looking-back/pictures-from-way-back) Keep them coming.

  11. I think there’s nothing cooler than a modified high end bass. Even if it ruins the resale value. I’ve got this to add - although it HAD to be modified because it came without any electronics. But since then it’s been prodded and poked, it’s got a Roland GK system and a few other things here and there. It probably wouldn’t work for anyone else but that’s ok with me! I’ve owned about five other Vigiers from this period and they are all special, but this one’s ‘mine’

  18. Selling this Steinberger Synapse headless, fretless, bass. Originally a fully fretted 5-string, it’s been converted to a fretless by Pedro Martins in Brighton. The original frets have been ground down to create a fretless sound with a little bit of a metal tone. This bass plays well, balances well, and records well. It’s in excellent physical condition and includes the original gig bag and tool kit. It’s fitted with D’Addario flat wound strings, which suit it very well. This is a good chance to get a beautiful bass at a good price. Shipping to UK ONLY, via insured Parcelforce, for £30. Buyers are of course welcome to pick up in person, with social distancing in place - and yes I've had my shots! In fact I’d prefer that rather than risk it going in the post! Here’s the original Steinberger product information: Carbon/maple hybrid delivers the warmth of wood and clarity of graphite. Designed by Ned Steinberger himself, it features the unique U-channel graphite core in a rock maple neck and maple body. Combo head accommodates double-ball and single-ball strings while the unique direct-drive double-ball bridge adds super-fast string changes and tune-it-once tuning stability. While other guitar manufacturers have been resting on their laurels, Steinberger's been thinking. Witness the strap hook, recessed tool holder and output jack, fold-down leg rest, and phenolic fingerboard that's slick as butter and fast as lightning. Low-impedance EMG USA bass pickup with internal low-impedance preamp and piezo bridge extends the range on both ends for earth-moving lows and phenomenal transients from slap-style playing. FEATURES Cybrosonic Technology featuring an integrated graphite U-channel combined with a three-piece hard maple neck Maple wings, Flame maple top Phenolic fingerboard EMG USA humbucker Piezo bridge Ebony saddle Direct-drive double-ball bridge Fold-down leg rest Rcessed tool holder Recessed output jack Strap hook Combo headpiece Zero fret34" scale Takes single- or double-ball strings

  19. That's a cool idea and the balance looks good in that pic. Love the chrome & maple. I wear my bass a little higher than you -- not too high, mind -- and I've found that it's very comfortable if I wear it like Entwistle's doing in this pic and rest my right forearm on the top edge of the body. It gets rid of all the dive but it still looks ok. If only I could play like him. Tweaks are done for now... black tuners, string tree & neck plate, the jack socket's been moved to body edge (I prefer them there) and everything's rewired with an added pickup toggle to go with the original V/V/T. It's still a cheap POC and still owes me next to nothing, but I rather like it.

  25. Carefully marked and cut the fret slots - as I don't have the funds or inclination to buy a slotting jig, I marked each position with a marking knife, and cut the slot using a set square to keep the saw dead level - measured after cutting and all lines up as it should (phew!)

  26. That's a rare beastie! Very much back on the Mesa radar screen thanks to the new TT-800, which trades heavily on the 400 heritage. Mesa's decision to design 400 sounds into their new flagship amp tells us how good they think it is. GLWTS.

  28. Nope he's seen an opportunity to create a channel and make money from it so fair play. There are many others with vids that require far less input and talent and who are probably making more money than him e.g. putting up reaction vids. He's got 9.44 million subscribers and has 1.44 billion views - way more than other bass channels so clearly he's got major appeal.

  38. And to the Luminlay. Pricey but very easy to fit. It comes in a stick. I drill a 3-4mm deep hole with an accurate bradpoint drill, then pop a drop of superglue gel on the end and push the Luminlay fully home: Then I cut it almost flush with the razor saw before paring it fully flush with a sharp chisel: And here they are all installed just ready for the final final sand: And that final final sand will happen this afternoon which means that the final final finish starts tomorrow And the other thing to try this afternoon is the knobs. We're going for: oak; very thin purpleheart demarcation; ebony top; luminlay dot - if I can manage that

  40. As new and now, it seems, like hen's teeth, literally bought last year, used at one 3-hour gentle rehearsal a fortnight ago and it's sat in a rack since the day I bought it. Fully tested, has all original packaging, includes rack ears, sounds utterly flawless and is as light as anything! Only selling as I got an unexpected deal on an Epifani UL901. Collection from Salisbury SP1 but I might consider a courier at your expense and risk. I'd ideally like to sell this but I'm open offers or to trades for a decent bass or guitar. I play Spector active basses, for instance - what ya gots?

  41. I've had my VM5 for a month now, and it's definitely delivering in a big way. Recorded a "live in the studio" video with it last Saturday, so I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing the final result of that soon. Here's a playthrough of one of the songs from the session that I did from my home setup. Just the VM5 straight into an HX Stomp and into my interface (bass comes in after the first verse).

  42. Our drummer should. At the last rehearsal he actually slowed down on the 4 stick beat count in. It would be funny if it wasn't true!
