  1. Thanks all. It went pretty well I think. No obvious mistakes and I got on really well with the band. I also knew everything on their set list, above the 5 songs they'd chosen for me to do, and let them pick some at random so they could see I knew it. All gear functioned flawlessly and I showed I'm really comfortable using in ears. They had over 70 applications so I won't be holding my breath but at least I didn't let myself down in any way. Aaaaaand breathe 🙂

  2. I dont have much time for Cliff's music, he was a late 50s/60s artist to me, but to suggest someone should stop doing something they love seems strange. If what he was doing was important to well being in any way (Yes I know ) then yes, give it up, but its just music and if he and the audience enjoy it then why not? Its his job after all. My old man loved his work as a carpenter and did his job till he was 76, not cos he was desperate for the money but because he loved it.

  5. Fabulous gig at Cafe Choux Choux, a gorgeous cafe/bar on Keighley station. Tonight is the first gig of this kind at the venue. The local promoter was let down on the original one, so these guys stepped in. Very hospitable, as are the promoters. Really well looked after, and all three bands putting in great performances. Could get used to this 😀 Here's Eliana Cargnelutti and her band closing the show.

  6. Spent yesterday sorting through some old photos for my Mum and found a very old photo album I'd never seen before. Turns out that this is my great grandfather Not sure what being a Banjoist said bout you back then, but on seeing the pic and finding out who he was, I felt a really strong emotional link to my past (kinda wished it had been an upright, but c'est la vie). Anyone else got any old pics of distant musical relatives?

  10. I got some good string/woodwind/brass collections from Plugin Boutique for 91% off or something stupid, £4 each. Also bought some Nike running shoes today for 50% off, direct from Nike. Doing well lol. Not spotted anything of interest bass wise, but I’m pretty much sorted! Si

  11. If you play music then you're a musician. With regard to people doing other things too that aren't playing, but are still within music, we were encouraged at uni to adopt a portfolio approach to a career; so playing, teaching, composing etc.

  12. I have this in a week or so's time but as I keep telling myself, joining a band is a two way thing and you are auditioning them too! To make a band that works needs so many different stars to align that if you don't get the gig it's to be expected in many way - getting the gig is a bit of a miracle! Good luck!

  14. Just got myself a new BB734a in the matt black finish. First impressions are it definitely lighter than my BB1024X. The Fit and finish is absolutely top draw. In passive mode it doesn't seem quite as loud as the 1024X but in active mode its absoloutley thunderous, whith lots of usable tones. The neck profile is a bit slimmer than the 1024x front to back but both of them feel really comfortable. Not had a chance to try it at volume yet but should get a opportunity this week. Got great service from Wunjos who had it sent up to Liverpool in a flash. Just a pity that Dawsons in Liverpool would not price match them and lost out on my business. So top marks to Yamaha and Wunjos

  15. @Marcoelwray Just for you.. seeing as I had the bass ready for tomorrow, I thought I’d take a pic just like the famous Uberhorn Fretless one for your album

  16. I've got the earlier MIJ Mustang, which i think has a tighter radius neck and smaller frets than the JMJ. Mustangs are lovely basses (def go for the La Bella mustang strings too - they sounds great).

  19. I have this model in black. I took off the stinky poo tuners and fitted Wilkinson black WJBL200 tuners. I love the feel and build of the instrument and the active circuit is very versatile and quiet. Quality in a low-priced instrument. I plan on turning the bass 'stealth black', replacing all the hardware with black hardware.

  20. Reminds me of the little girl hearing a Toad near a pond : "Hey, I'm a musician, I've been cursed by a witch, just kiss me, I'll become normal again and marry you …". Then the girl just puts him in her Pocket, and goes away, saying "I'll earn way more money with a speaking Toad".

  21. A minor point: the sale finishes late morning next Friday. Everyone knows that a bass bidders GAS and possibly alcohol fuelled fingers work better mid to late evening! 😉

  24. Not bass related but.....I applied for holiday leave at work for a fortnight in 2019. Already planned what we were going to do - Eurocamp. Price was £1239 for a fortnight in a caravan in Italy (flights & car hire on top of this). My boss approved the holidays yesterday so last night I sat down to book. Black Friday deal with Eurocamp reduced the cost to £560 thus saving a whopping £679. Unexpected and a genuine saving for something I was purchasing anyway. Impressed!

  25. Oh no, it's her again! Time to move on to the next builds, very much in the planning stage but this is where I'm at: Broadly they will be based on the Gibson Thunderbird which is as we'll all agree the sexiest bass on the planet, and that statement is beyond contestation, Moses had it as the 11th commandment but that bit broke off when the stone tablet toppled over and.. yeah well, it's a popular myth like many others Through neck with the traditional Gibson Vee joint to the wings. Neck angle will be 4'5 degrees. Trussrod, probably a double action again but this time with a spoke wheel adjustment at the heel to save weight and strength at the headstock Fretboards will be Rocklite Ebano but there is a possibility one might be made from Satinwood as a treat for me Pickups, one Mike Lull neck pickup ala Thunderbird II Bridge looks like being a Warwick again but with a different tail piece/stopbar, a screw in one not one held by inserts. I'm having difficulty finding one at the moment so I mat well end up making my own and getting it chromed. Headstock, well I think it will be a modified version of the one on the twins but with features of the Thunderbird standard. Tuners? Probably Hipshot Ultralites again but possibly with the modern Y shape rather than the clover leave given the probable shape of the headstock. Wood will be African Mahogany again, it's already sat in the workshop waiting. So there we have it, I'm just waiting for my foot to get better as I've damaged it again then I'll be on it but I shall probably get it all drawn out early next week and hopefully the neck laminate ripped up to settle. I have a few ideas to hopefully improve on the original design slightly, not easy because the original was so good despite the knocking it gets Oh and as you may have guessed from the title, I'm building three of them

  26. So, have had the Fender Stage 800 Rumble combo 5 days now and happy to share my first impressions. I’ll update the thread as I go along and I’m also happy to answer Q’s for those who are curious about this model: 1. It’s heavier than anticipated. Still a one hand carry though and pretty light for what it is I guess. 2. The 64 page manual, that annoyingly you have to download, initially seemed a bit daunting but actually wasn’t too hard to work through – it’s very pictorial and a lot easier compared to the Markbass Multiamp manual. I confidently learned the Fender amp programming in about 2 hours – there’s a lot to remember but it’s fairly self-explanatory once you get going. 3. The sounds and FX are very good, decent envelope filter and there is a decent notable difference between the amp models – ironically I’m favouring the GK emulator at present. There seems to be an abundance of distortions/overdrives…probably too much and a lot of the presets are distortion heavy but of course all settings are easy to modify and make cleaner. 4. The Fender Tone app on the iPhone is brilliant, easy to modify your sound from your phone as long as your connected to the amp via Bluetooth. You can create amps, add Fx and make setlists all from your phone and its quick to make the changes. There are also presets in a Fender cloud that can be auditioned as well as downloaded- quite handy. All settings can be backed up to the cloud too. 5. The footswith is great too. You can switch between amp models easily and switch FX on and off in each patch setting if they’re present. Built in tuner and you can control the looper from the pedal. The pedal is sturdy and built to last, however, the connecting cable is a cheap nasty molded plug type – basic mono jack to jack. 6. First bass amp I’ve ever connected to my home Wifi too – novel! However its great you can play your music via Bluetooth through the amp – today I jammed along with an iTunes playlist and levels can be adjusted to suit. 7. I’m sure there is a toaster somewhere on it but haven’t found that yet…neither have I managed to get on eBay with it Overall though I’m very impressed so far and will take it to rehearsal on Sunday for a good running. Particularly pleased it has a 12 string emulator patch so I can now contribute on our bands take on Pearl Jam’s ‘Jeremy’

  28. Thanks for the info. I like the finger puppet approach as it makes them look less serious though I'm not sure the manufacturers would appreciate it as much given they have probably spent a while trying to get the bass to balance perfectly before you go and ruin it lol. I'm going to have to Google Roland GK system...

  34. Actually there is no slot head in the insert. The slot goes in first and it partially cuts its way to wood. Just put a bolt and a nut to the insert and it is easy to fix it, if you can keep it straight. I have put inserts to one Status neck and they work really well. Have been thinking in making the bass a travel one: the neck is super easy to detach and as it is graphite, it keeps its shape and stays in tune.

  35. The issue is with individual piezo saddles rather than an under saddle strip. I think the Godin have individual saddle piezos? I have a Bolin NS Design with individual saddle piezos that just won't work with nylon tapewounds and a Dean Pace EUB - also with individual piezo saddles - that did with a bit of fettling. As it seems to vary I wondered specifically if anyone who has a Godin A4/5 has it strung with nylon tapewounds.

  37. The latest generation of fender rumble combos are really good for the money. We have the 500w version in my music school, and I am always impressed with the sound, no matter which bass I have with me. The sound is pleasing to me, but it may not do that trace elliot sound...

  38. I think it will be different for us who have had Helix experience. As a full fat Helix owner pretty much since release, I'd proffer two bits of sage wisdom: 1. Helix is one of those things that at first seems not quite as good as it could be, but then you start building your own patches, using it in ways you didn't think you could, discovering additional things that are disproportionately more useful than you thought they would be, and the whole experience seems different over time 2. Line6's updates are more than crucial. At first, when I got Helix, the bass related stuff was okay. Not great, but okay. As updates have continued they have added Amps, cabs, effects, features etc that have made the bass side of things more than great. I would thoroughly expect this update cycle to continue and keep adding great stuff to an already great tool.

  41. If you go on to say that you like Peri Como, Andy Williams and Jack Jones then a recommendation might have to be put to admins to review your membership. 😄 As has been said already, if someone enjoys what they do why not carry on. Donald Sutherland has just played a major role in 'Trust' on't tele aged 83. Did a damn good job too.

  44. I'm sure many will argue but the trick beyond a very basic technique is a good spraygun. Mine is a DeVilbiss SRI with a 1mm needle, it uses about 2 Bar of pressure and a very low air rate, it has a beautifully fine spray pattern no matter how wide or narrow your fan. It has a really nice airflow adjuster that can be used to balance out any adjustment in the needle. It was quite expensive at about £200 but can be used with a very basic compressor. The other problem is extraction for fumes especially with nitro, I no longer have a spray booth so outside is the best for me and then bring the bass inside quickly out of the way of dust and flies. This time of year it's too cold and damp so I'm spraying indoors and wearing a mask which keeps most of the fumes out but isn't ideal. Even with the cold I can still get four coats on in a day (between about 10am and 2pm) easily which is great Honestly a good spraygun is the answer, a good fine spray with no spits or splatters at any flowrate/pressure and it will give an even wet deposit with minimal usage, the overspray is negligable unless you are spraying edges. I think mine has paid for itself with just paint saved from overspray compared to a cheaper gun. Can you tell I'm a big fan of this gun? It is by far the best I've ever used, it's very hard to get it wrong after a little practice just to get a technique
