  3. Hi! Well... it took me years to understand that no fancy bass will satisfy me every way! And have had so many disappointments even from USA made instruments... Tried many different ones - LTD, Vintage, Squier ebonol Fretless. Got an unlined Cort which actually is great but.... its made in Factory to some specification - not my specification(!) No need to say it feels great knowing that You/I are similar to Jaco in a SMALL way of course... 😉 - after defretting the bass... Another factor is money - I could go and buy and spend £1.5-2k and have actually the same "thing" (do not shout at me please) but mine is made by me and costed around 15% of GENUINE F. bass.... This bass shown below feels and plays like £1.5k bass because I put my heart and hard work into this project..... are You next???.... List of the parts and tools: Squier Affinity P-Bass Neck - got it here from nice BC Fellow... Jazz Bass Alder Body (Light one 2.05kg) Made in Japan from Ebay Bare Knuckle '60 PE J-BASS pickups from Ebay 60s style Bass Bridge from Amazon Control plate with pots and knobs - CTS250k solid shaft pots and USA knobs Bone nut for a guitar converted into bass nut Amber Alcohol Based Dye/Stain Mineral Oil to protect fretboard 99% alcohol solution for cleaning purposes Clear Decal Paper from Ebay Gold and Silver Sakura Metallic Pen from Ebay Clear Varnish from local Car Parts store Sanding paper grade 120-2000 from local Car Parts store 9.5inch Wooden Radius Block from Ebay Ink Jet Printer So.... one day I got decent Squier Neck and defretted it according to this video. Then I bought some other parts and made my own baby which plays and feels WONDERFUL and wont swap it for any factory made Bass... Hi res. photos here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1JZ6keVOtyy2lMvq2vQ6jyc_Hff6U_m4d Even created the logo and named it as it Should not F.... bass as most people would because - Squier does not mean "Cr.p" And my best Jazz bass has Squier Classic Vibe Neck as it`s WAY better made than USA I have had once - Squier deserves logo on my bitsa bass! The purpose of this thread is to encourage You and assure You that no bass feels better in my hands and I wont swap it for anything! Some sloppy sound samples here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XpkWEKsULBYOLKaGwgV5k4oU-LEN6TSq/view?usp=sharing - No EQ just tini bit of compression and reverb... I`m happy to help if You have any questions - here or over PM! Cheers, Tomas

  7. Yesterday, I met Bassy (Nick) in a pub near Tower Bridge, and surreptitiously slid an envelope of money under the table in exchange for the beautiful Shuker he had up for sale. This is new territory for me. Not just owning a Shuker; this is my first five-string. I've been through several fretless basses, I've owned an active bass previously, but this is the first time I've owned one with a B-string. Isn't she lovely? Macassar Ebony, apparently. I've really only included this picture to get the luthiers in a lather. Head nicely bookmatched to the body, and what appears to be a brass nut. Your starter for ten: whose strings are these? The silk at the bridge ends is all blue, but at the top I have lilac (B), red (E), blue (A), black (D), green (G). They're rounds, and feel like a fairly standard gauge. Here's where the fun really begins. The onboard EQ is quite gentle, but offers a lot of very agreeable variation, especially with the sweepable mid in that stacked knob. Combined with the coil tap and blend, I could be playing around with these controls for days... The sound is quite glorious. I fancied something a bit more modern than my usual, and I certainly got that! I'm not sure whether it's the strings, the Wizard humbuckers, or that brass nut, but there's a wonderfully piano-like quality to some of the notes. I'm surprised how quickly I've got used to the wider fretboard, but I suspect the slender neck profile helps with that. (Now I just need to get out of the trap of going for the low F and accidentally hitting a bottom C...) At some point, if you're really unlucky, I'll get round to making a demo video, so you can hear it in actionUPDATE: scroll down for not one, but TWO demo videos. Until then, is a NBD thread really a NBD thread if you don't include a hokey picture of yourself playing the thing?

  8. In good condition and has all the characteristics of a Smith : nice mids which give it enough punch and a crispy slap-sound. Dates from 1994 Controls : volume (and serves as active/passive push pull), balance, bass, treble.. Comes with a Smith case and can be shipped (shipment included) or picked up....Sorry but no PayPal, I have bad experiences with the rates they use so I prefer a bank transfer. Feel free to check my feedback on bass.chat and no problem to pm me for further information. I made a crappy video with a couple of sounds to give an idea (I am still recovering from a bicycle accident four months ago (start working again next Monday) which splattered my right wrist and will keep me occupied with revalidation the next five months so I am glad I can start "playing" again)

  9. For some reason I always loved playing Addicted To Love. The bassline is such a groove to play. Unfortunately, it never went down as well as it felt so we haven't gigged it for ages.

  10. One of the things that @eude and I have been discussing is the colour of the fretline markers. We've gone for redwood veneer which should compliment nicely with the top. Here is a sample I did on our cherry cupboard at home, which will be a similar colour tone to the finished katalox: Should look pretty classy. I'm aiming to have all the fretlines installed tomorrow.

  11. That's what would make me uncomfortable about the movie if it went too much into his personal life: the fact that they kept a lot of it under wraps while it was going on means that he/they did not particularly want to make it all public. So out of respect I'd rather it stays that way. I didn't realise Freddie knew about his illness so early on (1985). I always had thought that he found out much later, closer to his death. I like how the band kept things private, and despite the obvious falling out when he went solo, they still respected each other. I think that's something that says a lot about them as human beings, and it would be wrong to break it now in order to make a movie a little more... 'sensational'. In my opinion, of course.

  15. Bit of tidying up to do, but I think this is pretty close to plan. You can tell by the artificial light that it's taken all day : You can see the angle here by looking where the upper cutaway angles where it joins the neck Here's the back - again, pending a bit of tidying up of the joints:

  16. It's happening guys... I wanted to be Jon Stockman but it turns out I'm not and I can't justify having this wonderful thing sat around doing nothing so... Warwick Thumb NT6 from 1997. Serial number A 035230 97. You know the deal. Bubinga and Wenge loveliness. Out of this world Seymour Duncan Bassline II pickups with 18v MEC preamp giving this some insane thump if you want it. It's pretty much unmarked, some very small dings and the world's tiniest bit of white paint on the tip of the headstock (pictured) where it rubbed against the wall where I keep it- could probably come off with a little bit of elbow grease. Sounds and plays amazing. Neck is fairly shallow so no issue getting to all 6 strings. I replaced the straplocks with a new set of Jim Dunlop ones as the old ones would come loose without warning! Very scary. Never let it drop though (phew). I'll miss this! Not in a particular hurry to sell it to hoping to get a little less than I paid for it SOLD Comes with a gigbag although I could put it in a hardcase for a little extra. I only really want to have this collected in Manchester but I might be open to shipping it for the right price.

  17. Sold.....Price reduced to £1900 Fore sale is my wonderful Ampeg B15N from the early/mid 1960's. I am sure the experts out there will know the exact year. It took me many years to find one of these in such complete condition but alas some recent interactions with the NHS mean that it is light weight equipment only for me. As you will know the head is a flip top and turns around into the speaker cabinet. It comes complete with the "Dolly" i.e. the bit with the wheels on it which can be removed. It also has the tilt back bars can be seen. The name plate lights up and so as well as sounding fantastic it looks great as well. I have fitted a new handle which is a direct Amp replacement. I am located in Bishops Stortford and I am only interested in a cash deal.

  18. Hi all, thought I'd put this vid up by way of introduction, just joined yesterday. I put this track together a couple of years ago just after I purchased my current pedal steel guitar. It was recorded for a pedal steel audience but I use my Palatino EUB for the bass track. Hoping to get a hold of an acoustic upright at some point for future recordings. I was trying out the PIP function on my then new video camera which can wifi up to a phone to use as the source for the PIP picture, other pedal steel players like to see what you're doing with your feet and knees, (pedals and levers). Unfortunately there was a delay between the phone and the video camera, so the PIP is out of sync with the main video, probably most people wouldn't notice anyway. My friend Danny Scott plays the jazz chords on guitar, the rest I multi-tracked. Hope yoos like it.

  20. I don't think it was ever a "trick" - they probably wouldn't check into the USA, but out of it, with a bass, they'd need to see evidence of ownership prior to the trip (ie you'd need to prove it was already yours, not bought in the UK). Do you have a receipt for that crappy old bass? With the serial number and description of the new one??

  27. Hi all, pleasure to be here, been browsing the site for a few days now and thought it was about time I joined. Not an out and out bass player but I love playing the bass. Played guitar for about 55 years, (started young!) But always liked picking up a bass and did a year stint in a band in the 80's playing bass and more recently played bass in one of my sons band for around 4 years. I have a Schecter Diamond Elite 5, (low B), a Palatino EUB, a Vox Shadow that I converted to fretless and a Harley Benton 5 string acoustic. The last 8 years I've been learning pedal steel guitar and that's probably my main instrument at the moment. I have a music room come studio, I have a good variety of instruments and like to record stuff. Recently I was looking to put new strings on my Palatino, it currently has hybrids but they've been on there for years and are sounding a bit dead. I got to thinking the cash might be better spent put towards buying an acoustic upright and started to look into it, hence I came across this site, which has had some great info on double basses. I have some questions regarding this so I'll post these in the correct forum once I've worked out exactly what I want to find out. I'll stick a Youtube Vid in the My Music forum where I use the EUB on a recording. In the meantime, thanks for having me, seems like a good forum with lots of helpful guys on it ☺️

  30. There are a couple of things that I think you might need to look at. The first is the bridge. Intonation and string height are matched to the instrument at the construction stage, so once you've made your initial choice of string, that's it? I don't like the idea of not being able to adjust the action or the intonation. Even with the same brand and gauge of string, you sometimes need to make minor adjustments. The other reason for the design, to allow the strings to 'interact' as much as possible through the shared saddle, is something that I don't believe is going to be desirable for bass either. The other thing I'd be looking at is the neck profile. It looks like a box with rounded-off corners. Will that work for bass?

  32. Most words in songs nowadays are recycled lyrics They are not so much novelty, but more like gimmicks If you struggle to compose originalism Forget it, and opt for plagiarism. 1.to make it work in pop music, just add some 'ooh uuh' 2. for rap music, just add 'yo' or 'mother#%#@' 3. for metal 'yeah' ..if you're Metallica fan '##** yeah' 4.for classical don't add lyrics at all 5. for blues add ' b b b b babyyy" 6. jazz add any words and notes , it will work 7. death metal, wait till you have a bad chest infection or vomiting bug then just go straight into recording it.

  37. Their super-lush multi-track overdub techniques are impressive, but can certainly get a bit wearing after a while. I preferred their live work, they made an incredibly huge racket for what was essentially a rock trio with a singer.

  39. It might be pretty good, then. Back in the day when people read reviews in Time Out before going anywhere in London, you could be sure of a good time if you exclusively went to things that the Time Out journos didn't like... but generally if the public like something, then I won't. Viz: Strictly, BGT, EastEnders, any currently-successful pop act, pizza, burgers, painted-on eyebrows, the Ford Mondeo, artificially-enhanced buttocks, and on and on. Actually, the Mondeo is a good car. But you get my drift.

  40. I've had one of these- this one, which I sold to Guy http://www.theguitarcollection.org.uk/guitar/burns-weill-super-streamline-bass-2/ Much as I love old UK weirdos and it looked really cool, it was a total piece of stinky poo as an instrument. HUGE body so it weighed a tonne, but neck exactly the same dimensions as a banjo. The fret positioning was totally off too- obviously hand slotted and pre calculators. The first three frets were the same width, which meant that on an instrument with a 29'' scale it just wouldn't play anywhere near in tune. Seen one picture of Jet Harris holding one (he was given it by Jim Burns, and Marty Wilde was given the matching guitar, when they were both on a tv show called 'oh boy') and he doesn't look very happy! Pretty sure he played it for about a second then went back to his Framus. Kudos to the guy from Egg for actually managing to use his. He *must* have ended up having to bend certain notes into pitch Anyway the listing in the op has gone now, so guessing someone paid the 'on crack price'. God knows why!? I've seen two of these in near mint condition complete with original case and they both went for about 400/450 or so. I paid 150, on ebay, and when I got it, it was in about the same state as the auction one- all there but non original finish, which I stripped

  42. How bizarre - I just listened to them both and reached exactly the opposite conclusion! On the Woolley version, that guitar sound and the signature lick he plays at the end of each phrase are totally late 70s ... that sound and that lick were everywhere in the music of the time, and to me that version sounds really dated. On t'other hand, the Buggles version was uber-modern in 1979 partly because there was no guitar at all, and it still sounds strong today.
