  1. It must be a year since I've played upright in public, but I recently joined the band attached to a Morris side. They go out and about in their own right, including to a 'mass jam' at a local pub last night. The band comprises violin, bodhran, washboard, clarinet, octave mandolin, piano accordion and now double bass. It was a very good evening - the organiser went around the room, everyone had the choice to do either a solo number, or to choose a tune for everyone to play from "101 songs for ukulele" books that were provided.

  4. After not buying any basses for a couple of years, and only one last year, I seem to be making up for lost time in 2025... First, we have the penultimate Status KingBass Mk-II, completed in 2019 with green wrap-around LEDs, followed by a late model all graphite 2021 Status Stealth 2, then a 2023 Fender American Performer Mustang which I can't stop playing at the moment, and finally the back-up to my main Fender American Original 60s Jazz, a 2012 FSR Limited Edition Hand Stained Ash Am.Std Jazz, courtesy of @SkinnyMan on here.

  5. Stray have bee asked to go on tour with British Lion this December. We'll be doing all 15 dates in December but not the November ones. Apparently the five London nights have sold out already. We supported them in Nottingham and Manchester last year and had a blast. To say we're excited is an understatement!

  6. I've given my pedalboard a complete overhaul, taking all the velcro off everything and replacing it with 3M Dual Lock "pedalboard" tape, rewiring everything to go through a QMX 6, and mounting two pedals underneath. It's not quite as perfectionist as some you see online but its a lot cleaner looking than it was before. That 3M stuff makes the pedals a nightmare to remove though, so switching things around just got a lot harder 😂 Signal chain is: Canvas Tuner > (via QMX) Octabvre > Doom 2 > Halcyon > Ghost Vibe > Xerography > Jive > Noble.

  7. Wow, wow, wow. Bass Direct seems to be really state-of-the-art now when it comes to using technology. Much more activity on social media and now also using ChatGPT to post here. Why do I say that? Well, as we all know, Mark, Marcus and Ash work at BD. Mark cannot have written the post as it says "good catch-up with Mark" and not "with me". Marcus and Ash also cannot have written it as it says "Sorry Marcus and Ash didn't get a chance" and not "Marcus and I" or "Ash and I". So, clearly written by ChatGPT, like this post, by the way 😉

  9. Now SOLD Up for sale, this lovely Ibanez Artcore series AF95 VLS hollow body Jazz style electric guitar. I bought this second hand a year ago thinking I should probably keep my hand in on guitar. It has sat in its case pretty much ever since and has had very little use from me. It cost me £380 - I’ve priced it to sell here at £280. Full hollow body design with a laminated flamed sycamore top with ƒ holes and ivory binding on flamed sycamore back and sides with a single Venetian cutaway mated to a set-in mahogany and maple neck with a 20-fret rosewood fingerboard with ivory binding and abalone block position markers. The Ibanez Artcore humbucking pickups have individual volume and tone controls and the guitar features a Tune-o-matic style bridge on a wooden base, a decorative tailpiece, a plastic nut, a flamed sycamore pickguard and Ibanez tuners. The guitar is in very good clean and fully working condition. There is just some light scuffing to the top of the headstock, which I’ve pictured, and a little light marking / scratching to the neck heel (also pictured). The pickguard is not fitted, but comes with the guitar, complete with fitting screws. Also comes with its original Ibanez branded hard case which is in very good clean condition and comes with its key. I would prefer this to be collected from East Leicestershire. If that is a deal breaker I’m happy to discuss postage, but would require the buyer to arrange their own insured courier. Also happy to look at a meet up within a 20 mile radius of Leicester. Any questions, please drop me a line.

  10. I will be trying this one out after work. Never had an octaver from Spencer but I have GR3, Wonderlove, Proton Mk4 and Doom2 so I expect this to be on the same level.

  12. I can do that. I call it free-form jazz. Some day I must get along to a jam night. So far, all my experience in this general arena has been folk clubs (one must perform either a Folk Song written by someone else, or a song which one has written oneself about ghosts or 18th-19th century warfare or pagan symbolism, and must be listened to in absolute silence) and open mic nights (one may perform whatever the f*ck one likes, sometimes others will leap up and join in, meantime everyone is talking to each other at maximum volume). Got back from one open mic night three hours ago, finished up playing bass behind a 14 year old girl doing Sweet Child o'Mine even better than our guitarist/singer. Tomorrow, or rather tonight, I'll be at a different open mic, possibly having to listen to a guitarist who owns a bass playing the wrong notes off time - it depends on how many people ask me to play bass.

  13. Another nice local gig at a WMC on Saturday. It was a little quiet in the first spot despite it being pretty full but it rowdied up nicely in the second spot with a filled dance floor all the way through. We had our own ‘70s Bez’ turn up who danced to just about every song and brought a load of glam wigs for the punters to wear. First proper outing for the shorty Stingray which performed nicely, deffo need to go up a gauge on the strings though…. Next week we’re back to pub work at a lively little venue called the Service Station in Hull…..we had em dancing on the bar as I recall last year.

  16. Have you good people clocked these basses? Looks like a limited (ish) run for Thomann's 70th anniversary. Good looking beastie and maybe give the Sire Z7 a run for its money? https://www.thomann.co.uk/sandberg_electra_tm_ef_mh_sb.htm

  17. Any pickups should be compatible, the active part is essentially just a preamp that the pickups plug/are wired into

  18. I used to view folk club sing-arounds as creeping death. It really winds up your stage fright waiting for your turn to come around. I much prefer a jam.

  21. I`ve been in the same situations with Stingrays, I love them, how they`re crafted, how they play, how they sit on a strap, everything. Except for the sound. When I hear someone else play one it sounds awesome to me, yet when I play one it just sounds wrong, probably through so many years of playing Precisions, so after the initial high of getting a `Ray I tend to fall out of love with it quite quickly.

  23. They're here already. I've encountered several in London. The most recent was outside Charing Cross station. He had a skeleton electric fiddle and a powered PA cab and was "playing" popular classical stuff. I play the violin, so it was obvious the music did not match what his hands were doing. It seemed to be working. A number of people were nodding appreciatively and putting money in the hat. I was feeling particularly grumpy that day, so I hung around and started telling them he was faking. If looks could kill...

  24. I came across this problem when fixing my DHA pedal - my solution was to have some solid core wire (about the same diameter as a 24 or 26 AWG multi-strand) and to strip abut 30 cm of the insulation off it. Next I heat the solder pad using a temperature controlled iron and feed the solid core through the hole in the PCB - as it travels through the hole it will pick up any errant nasties or stray wires that remain. Once the solid wire is through you should have a nice clean hole, then I used my wire cutters to chop the 'spent wire' off, leaving the rest of the reel ready for the next use. You may have to do this a couple of times, but I find that it works well in tight spaces where you can only realistically desolder the solder side of the board due to the component side being too full. Hope this helps.

  25. Hi all The time has come to sell this beautiful Ernie Ball Music Man Darkray 4 string bass in the 'none more black!' Obsidian Black It's a Stingray Special with a Darkglass preamp, 2 band EQ with a switchable overdrive circuit. To be honest I didn't really think I would need the overdrive but it is super fun and has cool LEDs 😎 and doesn't lose any low end at all - a typical DG trait. This bass is in showroom condition bar two small marks on the headstock as pictured. There isn't one single mark or scratch anywhere else on the instrument and it could pass as new otherwise. I believe the original strings may still be on it with only a few hours' play time. Comes with official EBMM hardcase and all case candy. You don't see these for sale very often. I see new examples for sale for around the £3k mark in the UK at present. I can send via insured courier and it will be very well packed in a proper guitar box. I would estimate a total cost of £60-70 for this and I'm happy to split that cost with you to ensure she arrives safely. Happy to take more hi def pics of any part of the instrument you would like to see. I have redacted the serial number in my pics (as I am conscious of my pics being used for fradulent purposes) but I'm happy to send the unredacted pics to an interested buyer. No trades please Asking £2099 and willing to discuss courier options as above. My feedback thread is here: https://tinyurl.com/acidbass Thanks for viewing! Danny

  26. Hello, I'm selling this MXR Bass Compressor. It's in almost new condition, with the original box. I'm sure everyone knows what to expect with these now - a nice and natural sounding comp, that's easy to use, with great visual metering too. I'm asking £115, which includes next day delivery. Any questions, shoot me a message. Thanks.

  27. I shall probably regret selling this but I'm operating on a "one in, one out" basis. It's an extremely good Jazz bass, full stop. The neck is slim and fast. Nicely finished and an absolute pleasure to play. I had flats on it for a while and it punches so far above its price point. It's got new (Sun 6th Apr) Legacy (Rotosound) Nickel 45-105 strings. It's been set up to Fender J specs (Sun 6th Apr). It's had the fingerboard done with Montypresso. It's got a high mass bridge (original BBOT bridge included). The cavities have been copper lined. 4.2kg I've got all the proper packaging so can ship at cost. If you want to try it, it's in Gloucester.

  32. Thanks guys, @Sean yes I can see the move towards the neck being a move toward a certain (bassier) tone but had also heard a lot of comments about P/PUPs pretty much only working in that rather special place that Leo put the all those years ago - while a lot of basses have PUPs closer to the neck, I don't see many using a Precision PUP in that location hence the question (in short is the P/PUP unsuited to being used in the neck position). @Hellzero that is going to be an interesting read and listen, many thanks for posting 👍

  33. Just to say I finally tracked down the problem with the GP7. The problem turned out to be the switched speaker socket that connects the amp to the internal combo speakers evidently not making a good clean contact through when nothing was plugged into it (the normal combo case). It worked fine when I finally plugged in a separate cab to the jack socket. I'm quite surprised it produced the kind of distorted sound it did - it wasn't a typical 'erratic contact' kind of sound but a quite regular fuzz (with the odd dropout) at low levels. This is what threw me off the scent from the start - otherwise I'd have got to checking the socket much sooner. Since there are two speaker output sockets offering permutations of 'parallel with the internal speakers' and 'interrupt the internal speakers' as a precaution I've rewired them so both sets of socket contacts are feeding through to the internal speakers in parallel, providing redundancy. It means if you want to disable the internal speakers while the amp is still in the combo case then both output sockets have to be plugged into, but it's not a setup I can ever see us using. Thanks again for the helpful input.

  34. I have to admit that from now on I`m tempted to, whenever something is just left outside my property, to state I haven`t received it and to request a replacement. If couriers kept on getting hit with claims it might stop this. The only reason I don`t is that I think it wouldn`t be fair to the retailer.

  36. It's the first time I've been to something like this, but there was a really relaxed atmosphere about it. Some people did solo spots, but others just chose from the book. I must also admit to a bit of boredom at some folk clubs waiting 2 hours for my turn to play 2 songs when some of the performers aren't so good.

  39. I bought my first mustang bass in about 2007, a secondhand 'crafted in Japan' one in olympic white. It was my main bass for the band I was in, and I thought I'd never part with it. Fast forward a number of years and I now own several additional mustang basses, most notably three JMJs (two blue & one black) which have a much chunkier neck profile. After playing these I find the narrow glossy neck of the CIJ just isn't as much fun to play as the others, so I sold it.

  43. I'm going to agree too. You can build a nice sounding PA around the DBR's. I went for the two 15's route with a couple of RCF 745's. It works in that I can do just about any gig with just a pair of speakers and they sound fabulous but in small venues they are completely over the top and obscure the stage. Lifting them onto the poles is starting to wear thin as is the load in and out. I can't say I'm unhappy with them as the sound is just glorious but if I had my time again I'd probably go for a single sub with smaller tops. The DBR's would probably handle the smaller pubs without a sub too so you'd have options.
