There's a very long thread elsewhere as to me leaving the band I'd formed seven years ago. People are just asshats really. Stupidly, it took a while to get over it; so much time invested and work to keep it together. I went out for an Indian last night with some friends and they asked whether I miss it. I just answered no and then showed them a photo (below) of the old band, headlining a gig in Reading last weekend playing to six people. It was precisely this, the unconditional acceptance of every gig offered and playing to next to no one (it happened) that led to the cracks. I mean credit to them for continuing to grind through gigs like this, but frankly it's just not worth the effort.4 points

Last update for a while, here's the twins upright on stands just to get a better look at how they look. They are now hanging in an old wardrobe until they have hardened enough to be safe to handle without risk of marking the lacquer, somewhere between a week and eight weeks, I really don't know until they get there.3 points

BASS SOLD I am considering to sell my gorgeous and rare Mustang JMJ signature, I love it and it looks fantastic but I am struggling getting use to the short scale, my fingers are too heavy. I bought it only two months ago, so it's brand new, but road worn... 🙂 It comes with soft short scale Fender Gig Bag and two sets of strings, rounds and flats. I live in London. I will consider trades with Precision Basses: but I am not willing to add any money. Cheers Emanuele3 points

My 1980 Wal Pro 2E has been my most treasured possession since 1986. The only thing I would even momentarily consider swapping/selling it for would be another Wal, a five-string fretted one.2 points

Don’t think I have a number one bass anymore. I have a bass I gig more than the others and basses that would be tough for me to replace but none are sacrosanct. I keep thinking of selling the 3 non-cheapies and getting something really special but I doubt I’ll ever go through with it. Ironically my main gigging bass is nominally the one of lowest value (the Mustang on the left - the Jag is no longer resident).......go figure.2 points

It should bridge the gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the pedal to provide friction. You could also do the brofressional thing and invest in some gaffers tape.2 points

It’s only through pain that thou shalt find salvation....🤦🏻♂️🐒😁 under the blisters nice calluses are waiting, then the holy grail of the double bass player will reveal itself: taking teabags out of the cup without the need for a teaspoon (what’s a few germs amongst friends...)2 points

Going to listen to this today. I also found out yesterday that there was a bonus track on the Cog CD In Search of Better Days called Liberation Groove, it’s a killer track but for some reason doesn’t appear on my physical CD! Whilst talking about new music I listened to the album Le Chic Remix by Dimitri From Paris this week, there’s some really clever work on old tracks but they have boosted most of ‘Nards lines in the mix and you can hear them so much better. It’s awesome.2 points

Old thread resurrection. I’ve been hammering The Clash this week on the 800-odd motorway miles I’ve done. They’ve never been far away from my ears since I heard Bankrobber as a kiddie back in 1980. Simonon is one of my absolute heroes and the reason I play a white/black Precision. Has anyone cooler ever strapped on a bass guitar?2 points

I'm colour blind. Explains the consistently crap playing.2 points

It's true. I've been known to tap my right foot when playing my blue bass and tap my left foot with the 3 tone sunburst.2 points

I'd never change an "offensive" lyric if I was covering a song. The composer wrote those words for a reason and I think it's a greater offence to bastardise someone's art than to offend someone who deams their language to be inappropriate. It's your God given right to be offended and it's my God given right to offend you. Words are not and will never be violence; "Sticks and stones... Etc." to equate "offence" with "assault" is a very dangerous road to tread in my eyes.2 points

Thinking on from a previous thread about how many basses we own and what we like about them... I have one really valuable bass and I love it - everything would be sold before that bass... but I could be tempted if I was offered a blue sparkle modulus flea bass... It’s a 64 Reissue relic from the Fender Custom shop. A one off...mad neck 🤗 what would you swap your main bass for - has to be similar value, not “Ive got a squier CV but I want a Fodera Monarch”1 point

I saw these guys 10 years ago in a small venue in Birmingham. They were amazing. I love the late 60's early 70's vibe. Great bass sound as well. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Howlin Rain.1 point

Never say never but probably never. My 2010 Warwick $$ Ltd. I've been a Wick fan for over 20 years but this thing is something else. Its one of only 80 that Warwick built with a Tiger wood top, and I have only ever seen one other with this configuration of Bartolini's and a 3 band EQ instead of the normal 2 band, I've had it since Feb and have played almost nothing else and I know I will regret it if I ever get rid of it. I will never find another bass that sounds quite like this.1 point

A cursory examination of the lyrics and of such background as is available indicates that the song Oliver's Army is a meditation upon the enlistment of young, unemployed men into the British Army. The 'Only takes one itchy trigger, one more widow, one less white n*****' line refers to such collateral damage as was sustained by Irish Catholics during the Troubles. The title plays upon the dark reputation of Oliver Cromwell and his frankly savage acts against the Irish people during his conquest of Ireland. The song was - apparently - written upon Mr Costello's return from a trip in 1978 to NI when it became apparent to him that the British soldiers serving in Ulster were both very young and from a background of poverty. It works on a lot of levels.1 point

Ooh ya. Well my main bass is an original 1970 Fender Precision that I've owned for years and years and has been everywhere with me, and I genuinely can't think of anything I'd swap it for. Its exactly what I want from a bass, in terms of tone, looks and playability, and sounds sublime on the recordings I've done over the last couple of years. So 'stick' I guess for me.1 point

OK , I'll leave it here , it needs a far better singer on it , but I can't do any more takes , though I think I had more goes at it than any other one , as I just thought it was great fun to do1 point

Thanks Silvia and of course Jack. Slightly concerned about the projection comment as a lot of the gigs I use this setup for I do not go through a PA so I will need projection to fill a room or even more if playing outside. Great video as well, killer band and great bass playing, totally nailed it.1 point

I do up basses. One I had was a Warwick with a wenge fingerboard. The frets were worn out and the strings had been well ground into the wood of the neck. I guess this is what would happen to your fretless. Why not remove the fingerboard and fit a new ebony board? This would also give you the opportunity to put the side dots in the right place: in the fret-wire positions.1 point

are you always using your PA or do you play venues with house PAs? If the latter, use it to experiment with going thru the PA via a DI AND use your amp basically for you and the drummer to hear as a monitor.. You may not need to buy anything1 point

I agree with that 100%. But the problem is; there are too many out there who won't agree; some of whom will see it as their duty to take to social media to create as much of a s**t-storm over it as possible....😐1 point

Well, you'll be even happier soon, as I have got a vocal done 👍 Ive had a blast with this , I'm normally a bit literal with my take on the photos but this one tied up with having the grandson for the week , he was such fun, and the photo itself emanated the same thing, so I have a lively one roughed out 😊 hopefully upload it tommorrow 👍1 point

I think this is the list if anybody is interested. Only including bands that gigged and weren't a complete waste of time... Band 1... was getting far too many gigs and I have a day job that pays too well. When the band was seriously affecting my day job something had to give. It was the band. Band 2... originals band. Sacked. "The drummer can't get along with you, oh, and you're too old" Band 3... punk covers band. Really good band but the lead guitarist left and it all got directionless for months. I stopped showing up - "let me know when you get your act together". The did but didn't ask me back. Band 4... Everybody resigned except me and the drummer. They then set up a new band lied about us and stole all the gigs. Nice people. They wanted all the gigs/money they could get. We didn't. Band 5... still there 😄 When you write it down it all sounds a bit pathetic. There was another 3 or 4 that split up before playing in gigs. I should learn to spot those.1 point

Reasons I have quit tend to be around members I want to beat to death with their own shoes... I have generally taken the shithouse way out via group message as I don’t hold my tongue well when I’m angry. It’s usually down to laziness, wanting the world at their feet but without putting effort in. Turning up late, not helping move gear, losing gear on packing down. I don’t need to gig to pay bills so I’m probably not as patient as some might be.1 point

Our keyboard player used to travel with the drummer. Usually they would meet up half way and load into one car. At the end of one evening they loaded up the keyboard players car and he drove home. The next morning he found that one of his keyboards was missing. It had been left on the pavement leaning against a tree! 2 days later he got a call from a local music shop saying someone was trying to get in touch. They had found the keyboard and wanted to return it. All they had to go on was his name on the case and an internet search!! He gave the guy £50.1 point
