  1. There's a very long thread elsewhere as to me leaving the band I'd formed seven years ago. People are just asshats really. Stupidly, it took a while to get over it; so much time invested and work to keep it together. I went out for an Indian last night with some friends and they asked whether I miss it. I just answered no and then showed them a photo (below) of the old band, headlining a gig in Reading last weekend playing to six people. It was precisely this, the unconditional acceptance of every gig offered and playing to next to no one (it happened) that led to the cracks. I mean credit to them for continuing to grind through gigs like this, but frankly it's just not worth the effort.

  2. Last update for a while, here's the twins upright on stands just to get a better look at how they look. They are now hanging in an old wardrobe until they have hardened enough to be safe to handle without risk of marking the lacquer, somewhere between a week and eight weeks, I really don't know until they get there.

  3. BASS SOLD I am considering to sell my gorgeous and rare Mustang JMJ signature, I love it and it looks fantastic but I am struggling getting use to the short scale, my fingers are too heavy. I bought it only two months ago, so it's brand new, but road worn... 🙂 It comes with soft short scale Fender Gig Bag and two sets of strings, rounds and flats. I live in London. I will consider trades with Precision Basses: but I am not willing to add any money. Cheers Emanuele

  4. My 1980 Wal Pro 2E has been my most treasured possession since 1986. The only thing I would even momentarily consider swapping/selling it for would be another Wal, a five-string fretted one.

  6. Don’t think I have a number one bass anymore. I have a bass I gig more than the others and basses that would be tough for me to replace but none are sacrosanct. I keep thinking of selling the 3 non-cheapies and getting something really special but I doubt I’ll ever go through with it. Ironically my main gigging bass is nominally the one of lowest value (the Mustang on the left - the Jag is no longer resident).......go figure.

  10. It should bridge the gap between the bottom of the knob and the top of the pedal to provide friction. You could also do the brofressional thing and invest in some gaffers tape.

  11. It’s only through pain that thou shalt find salvation....🤦🏻‍♂️🐒😁 under the blisters nice calluses are waiting, then the holy grail of the double bass player will reveal itself: taking teabags out of the cup without the need for a teaspoon (what’s a few germs amongst friends...)

  12. Going to listen to this today. I also found out yesterday that there was a bonus track on the Cog CD In Search of Better Days called Liberation Groove, it’s a killer track but for some reason doesn’t appear on my physical CD! Whilst talking about new music I listened to the album Le Chic Remix by Dimitri From Paris this week, there’s some really clever work on old tracks but they have boosted most of ‘Nards lines in the mix and you can hear them so much better. It’s awesome.

  13. Old thread resurrection. I’ve been hammering The Clash this week on the 800-odd motorway miles I’ve done. They’ve never been far away from my ears since I heard Bankrobber as a kiddie back in 1980. Simonon is one of my absolute heroes and the reason I play a white/black Precision. Has anyone cooler ever strapped on a bass guitar?

  15. It's true. I've been known to tap my right foot when playing my blue bass and tap my left foot with the 3 tone sunburst.

  18. I'd never change an "offensive" lyric if I was covering a song. The composer wrote those words for a reason and I think it's a greater offence to bastardise someone's art than to offend someone who deams their language to be inappropriate. It's your God given right to be offended and it's my God given right to offend you. Words are not and will never be violence; "Sticks and stones... Etc." to equate "offence" with "assault" is a very dangerous road to tread in my eyes.

  19. This is a superb bass from the top class luthier: Paul Everson. It has a 40mm top nut, Schaller hardware, EMG pick-up, volume, dual concentric bass/treble with mid sweep for each. The current string spacing is 19mm but adjustable either way. It is a lightweight bass at 3.6kg.

  22. My ex-band was an indie-pop originals band, with a lot of interesting potential in the music, but fatal differences in musical standards and failures of communication. I tried, often, gently, to talk these through, but was ignored. Eventually I had to get out. Had a long phone talk with the keys player - the only one I'd have given the time of day to outside band sessions - who was very supportive. Then had a short phone talk with the bl, who was completely defensive and almost rude. Then sent a very short polite email to all the band members - none of them replied. Which confirmed to me that I was right to leave. I had put a lot of time into that band and developing basslines and arrangements for their music, and it shouldn't have been hard to say "thank you". Mind you it was good musical experience, and it's a shame it didn't work out. (They did find another bass player, but disappeared completely soon after.)

  25. Yes - exactly that. You put a 1 or 2mm spacer behind the trailing side of the fence and line the router bit flush with that. As long as the fence is spot on where it is supposed to be, it works a treat. I'll try and find a diagram in the morning that illustrates it better than my dodgy description

  27. If you're ever in Anglesey, north Wales I can recommend the RoadKings Truckstop just outside Holyhead. It's a continental-style roadhouse and was built to serve the drivers going to and from the ferry to Ireland. Big, clean, good choice of well-cooked food, cheap accommodation too if you want it and open 24 hours a day. http://www.rktruckstops.co.uk/locations/road-king-holyhead/

  28. He's a bit too big for the sling now but this was a year ago when my lad was one. He actually went to sleep one time. Now he still likes listening to me playing bass so I can get about 10 mins done before he gets bored and kicks off.

  38. I know what you mean, Paul. I had a 78 Precision that sounded pretty much unlike any other I`ve ever had, I named it Ian Paisley as it just barked at you, was really aggressive sounding. Sometimes you get one that just has a different voice, for no specific reason.

  39. Hi Dave, welcome to BC, I'm pleased to see common sense is prevailing, you really don't need a 4x10, 1x15 combination. That sort of set up is very much old tech from the days when amps were costly and speakers of limited ability. The only reason to choose that sort of set up now is if you love the old school sounds or for the look a huge rig brings. All you really need to be able to do is match the drummer for volume. After all if the drums aren't going through the PA then you being much louder than that isn't going to give you a good sound anyway. If you are playing to 50-100 people then you will be more than loud enough. A modern 2x10 or even 1x12 will just about get you there in terms of matching the drums. I too use 1x12's, a single speaker for small venues and two for bigger or trickier venues like a marquee. My amps are both of the 300W into 8ohms 500 into 4ohms varieties. If you are struggling to hear yourself then it may be because of it's positioning. Being on the ground will reinforce the bass but it means the speaker isn't pointing at your ears so you miss a lot of the mid and high frequencies, if you can lean it back at an angle you will hear more. It may be your eq, at home most of us prefer a bass heavy mid scooped sound. Playing live you probably need to roll off the bass and boost the mids so you cut through to the audience, it sounds better that way with a live band too. You don't say which combo you use or whether you like the way it sounds. Someone has already said it but if it is an 8ohm system then adding a matching 2x10 if that is possible will mean your amp will develop it's full power and the extra speakers will double the efficiency giving you an extra 6dB of sound, putting your combo on top of the extension speaker will raise the speakers nearer your ears. You'll be amazed at how much more authoritative that sounds. The sound you have now but bigger. The ohms bit is simple enough, always use speakers of the same impedance, generally go for two 8ohm speakers, 16's won't draw full power from a solid state amp and two 4's are too low a load for most amps. Two 8's in parallel will nearly double the power the amp will give and that will be shared equally between speakers with the same ohms. As Lozz pointed out that's 450W per speaker with the amp you are wanting to use.. Matching amps and speakers isn't an exact science, their wattage ratings are done very differently, but using a 450W amp into a 300W speaker increases the possibility of damaging your speaker by pushing it too hard.

  41. Red Yamaha BB300 Japanese one. I ended up putting an ebo pickup at the neck and had it re-Sprayed in Ford RS blue. i sold it to a mate who’s a guitar tutor and he uses it for recording and teaching... (here’s a picture off his website where it lives next to another ex of mine - a limited edition Epiphone acoustic which I never should’ve sold...)

We do Jilted John and without fail everyone smiles at, she a slag, and he's a creep, she's a tart, he's very cheap, she's a slut, he thinks he's tough, she's b1tch and he's a poof, sometimes political incorrectness is amusing.
