  1. Hi, Not wishing to be contentious but....would you like to add some meat on the bones of that comment? Wouldn't mind knowing if that was meant in jest or actually was meant seriously. Happy to discuss privately or on here. I can quite happily confirm that every piece of kit I've ever reviewed has been reviewed and tested by me either at home, at BGM offices in years gone by or in-store if we're conducting a review day. Having written for the mag for 13 years, every review I've written has been with the gear at my disposal. All the best one and all, Mike

  4. And any I’ve seen have a pretty awful/unique tone... there is a different vibe and sound to acoustic basses beyond just the look. They are great to tinkle on around the house without worrying about amps and stuff. As others have said, for and ensemble playing a small amp is a must. There’s a huge variation in cost and quality in the sound (esp of the pickup) so try before you buy is pretty much a must. Ive got a Faith acoustic bass which I got a great deal on new at £500 and it'sgreat fun in more acoustic settings. For your jam session an electric bass and small amp would, of course, work fine. But if it’s also about the vibe and the look and a less electric tone and you just fancy one then definitely try some out. Then you can make an informed yes or no decision.

  5. I was trying a joke on the fact a bitcrusher isn't meant for very quiet musical contexts or sweet melodies. Nevermind.

  6. @dodge_bass @basexperience great little demo Dodge bass! lofi sounds nice and subtle but deffo adds abit of synthyness to the octave (an Oc2 by any chance) basexperiece ive just started myself and my set up isn't as elaborate as yours (my board and setup is in the pedalboard thread) my core sound is a cog T65 with 3 leaf you're Doom. and Wonderlove! but I've also a cog OD and MXR phase/flange/chorus so in using combos of those pedals! The cog octave with the dirty up is a main sound and i can blend in other FX via its loop. I'm looking at expanding my setup with ring mod/bit crusher and getting an expression pedal next year! I'm also going to try and get another Digitech bass synth wah as they sound great. The keyboard player has absolutely loads of vintage synths and arpegiators as well as a really cool nord! and he really knows how to use them, he also has an original deep impact which I think I'll be borrowing off him were doing some covers of electronic Sci Fi film soundtracks (terminator in 7/4, stranger things theme, John carpenter themes etc) as well as prog rock and fusion (herbie Hancock etc) as well as original material. As ive judt discovered Jojo Mayer and nerve through researching pedals ivecgot really into those sounds! Its all for fun and im finally getting to mess about with my pedals

  7. Watching the Cbeebies panto with the kids and I think the bassist is playing a V7, nice to see an inexpensive bass on a high profile gig.

  8. I've had a look and can't see mention of this elsewhere. Alan Cringeon is a valued friend. I've followed his career as a luthier for at least 11 years, from the early days. Many of you will know him and his work, either directly or from various bass resources. I won't go on but I would like to offer my congratulations as a Salace 5 String E-Type has just been awarded the accolade 'Fretless Bass of 2017' by Bass Guitar Magazine. I know how much time, effort and pure craft Alan has devoted to building both basses and guitars over the years and I for one am dead chuffed for him. Peter

  9. Thinking of selling this beautiful and awesome bass since I mainly play 4 string and this bass is not being played as often as it should be. It's in brand new immaculate condition. Low action and nicely setup. Balances really well - superb playability. More info on the bass on the following link: http://www.ibanez.com/products/u_eb_detail17.php?year=2017&cat_id=2&series_id=53&data_id=117&color=CL01 Sound samples: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW95Dymn62Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2fBYNzjj8Q https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUK0M8RmO8E I'm based in London. Collection or meet-up preferred but I can also ship since I have the original shipping boxes and packing materials.

  10. Well I'm booked into have my left done on Tuesday which is eight weeks after I had my right one done. Whilst I played a gig 17 days after the surgery on my right hand it's still not 100% and still has some healing to be done, there is still a very slight numbness in my finger tips, if I have a day in the office on the computer it's very sore the next day, and the cold plays bloody hell with it. Fortunately playing bass is absolutely fine 👍 Gonna do a bit of a carpal tunnel recovery blog (with photos) on here for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position and wants to see what it's all about, see you on Tuesday night, wish me luck!

  11. I love the fatness of an opto compressor. .... They're just squidgy and add real grooviness that I clearly can't put into words 😂 Or get a great vca compressor, they are a really good best of both worlds workhorse tool.

  12. After the snow put paid to practice last week I finally got to turn this up tonight, it lives up to its name... it's VERY loud, there's loads of tones in there, can't compare it to the standard abm600 as I've not played through one but I'm not sorry I bought this at all, it's a beast.

  16. So are the one ten and two ten the barefaced cabs for players who don’t particularly like the harsh modern tones of their earlier offerings? i heard a demo of the two ten and was really impressed with what I heard... the finish looks a lot better than I had previously seen as well... Would you say they seem to be aimed at the more traditional finger style/pick player Never though I would say this but i am tempted to try one out!

  18. It's a cover of the Stranger Things theme! Although it's mainly the main synth riff that they use mixed in with some other stuff.

  22. Look at that neck! Mikkel - I see a lot of nice plants here and there. Do you know - the large-leafed plant in your house - is it Ficus lyrata?

  23. Cool - I’ll sure to be great! I’ve got a nice Rode set-up for my DSLR, but I tend coy to use it ‘cos it’s a bit conspicuous. Looks and sounds great when I do use it, though!

  26. This is one option I'm considering but can't decide if it looks 'cheap'. The two edges of the body were planed and a hole drilled for where I want the pickup cable to run - sometimes it is easier to do that at this point rather than trying to use a long drill later on in the build (just have to record where the hole is so cavities can be routed in the right place later!!). I then joined the two halves using three clamps to hold the body together and two g-clamps to keep it aligned. Even at this point, I'm quite pleased with how this ash looks. The piece I bought from the tree surgeon is plenty big enough to make another body from and, if anything, the piece I have left is a bit nicer than this. This piece has some kind of 'feature' in it but that will be well out of the way when the body shape is cut.

  29. Yeah the OC2 is a keeper - but you'll pick one up again easily enough if you want one - they come up pretty regularly for sale. The COG is grea too though because of the filter knob - can really get a great range of sounds going on! As for transcription - well funnily enough I reckon you've got a massive advantage by being able to read / understand notated music already - you just need to accept that working it out is going to be a slow but gradual process - one bar a day kind of thing and just start doing it. It will be SO GOOD for your ears / self development and you confidence as well. Believe me it's worth spending time on - you won't regret it! start now and do some every day for the rest of your life. If you want you can send me your finished transcriptions and I'll check them over - that helped me a lot in the beginning when I was starting out!

  30. Ok, so I'm going to bite in the interest of keeping the Noodle Bar in business... Here's a snippet of something I'm cooking up (not for the BC Composition Challenge as it happens). Precision bass played through an API pre-amp with outboard EQ and compression. Rest is all written in MIDI.

  33. If you're limiting yourself to nano pedals you don't have many options, one of the best out there is the Cog Mini 66. Keep an eye on the FS section, wink wink nudge nudge. FWIW I far prefer pedals with top jacks to nano pedals, as they take up about the same amount of space overall depending on your board layout and other pedals - so that might widen the net a bit!

  35. If you need to be completely un-amplified you are going to need a double bass. Acoustic bass guitars simply aren't loud enough to compete with anything more than a single quiet (not strummed) acoustic guitar because the body isn't big enough to project the sound. Low notes and a decent volume requires a large body, hence the size of the double bass. There are a few very large bodied acoustic guitars like the Earthwood Bass, but they are very rare and expensive. The other issue you will come across is that decent small-bodied acoustic basses (one you will be using with an amp) tend to cost a lot more than an equivalent quality electro-acoustic guitar, partly because they aren't so popular and also because once again amplifying low notes is more complicated than a standard guitar. Unless you get very lucky with something like a bargain-priced second hand Takamine TB10, expect to pay at least £1k to get something of the equivalent quality to a £350 electro-acoustic 6-string guitar. TBH if you are going to have to reply on amplification you might as well use your favourite electric bass and a small and unobtrusive combo. It will sound better and you won't have to worry about feedback or excessive handling noise from cheap piezo pickup systems.

  38. Looking good Kev! But she-itt that’s an expensive head!! I’m guessing you have other cabs too, as that’s quite a lot of wattage there for the One10?

  40. It'll most likely be the relief that has changed a little bit. Take a little bit out and see if it improves things. This happens on zero fret equipped basses when the zero fret is not higher than the rest. It's widely debated whether or not it should be higher, but in my experience it definitely should be. As if it's the same height as the first fret, it makes open strings very susceptible to buzz when the neck is straight. When performing fretwork on instruments with zero frets, I like to level all frets except the zero fret. This gives that tiny extra bit of clearance whilst still keeping the same wire.

  43. Here's a 28'' scale fretless I just finished (build thread in the Build diaries section). It's called the Flea Market Funk Machine as it was made entirely out of wood from furniture found at flea markets.

  44. Confused.....didn't somebody say recently that Alembic had copyrighted the use of the oval fret markers? Lovely looking bass, Chris but you know what? It's just cluttering up your playing space...best you drop it round here to get the space back...you know I'm right...

  45. Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Weich strings growl nicely and bow nicely. 99% of sound guys have never done a double bass and have no clue. They treat it like a bass guitar... boost the bass, cut the middle... wrong, wrong, wrong.
