Hola folks. Very long time no post. Thought I would wait until I at least had some photos to share of my now upgraded Squier Bronco. Bought it a few years back. Sold it. Bought it back after a year, and had parts lying around originally for the upgrade. I got very lucky and found a used bridge with the right spacing. New bone nut, new tuners, new pickup and wiring and had the volume and tone knobs lying around as well. I had to add in the expense of getting it all set up with a luthier. It does play A LOT better, but still is very light feeling, like a toy. Maybe I cannot escape the fact it is using cheaper woods etc. It is perfect for home recording though and rehearsals.9 points

Away from the bass, my duo Deadlight Dance played a low key spot at The Barge in Honeystreet, Wilts. Nick (other half of DLD) used to live next door and this was a regular haunt for us three decades ago. Very alternative-y vibe. Got told off by one member of the audience for looking far too young for my age (the photo doesn't support this view, mind!). "Do you take illegal drugs?" she enquired. "No, I'm quite healthy living" I replied to which she started pointing at me, shouting "see!" Quite surreal. Another bloke asked to sit by me "because you look really cool", only to then undermine my brief moment of being flattered by detailing a long history of mental health concerns. We did a mix of Cure and Sisters of Mercy songs (on the mandolin and mandocello) before doing our new single "Missives from the Sisters" (shameless plug alert, streaming on all good - & bad - platforms via Ray Records from Friday).9 points

I've had a brief message exchange with kiwi and ped about (perhaps) setting up a sub-forum here to ease the inevitable questions when you're playing a new venue. I'm playing a few new venues in the next two or three months; there's just no information about where to park, loading in etc. My suggestion would be simply to have an area with subdivisions (England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland/Isle of Man/Channel Islands) and within this Counties (Avon/Bedfordshire etc.) and then towns therein. I know we're never going to be able to hit every venue in every town, but there's certainly going to be venues where several of us will have played previously. The idea being to provide a definitive listing of venues, primary contacts, ease of load-in, local parking, venue type (club/theatre/toilet), capacity, music style etc. In my head, it should heavily moderated...this wouldn't be a place for long discussions about your gigging experience or slagging off the venue, just the fundamentals. It might help getting you gigs at these places too. Any interest? Paul8 points

Hey all, just wanted to say a massive thanks for all these suggestions... some really great ones here! I'm in contact with a lot of these players already or have worked with them in the past, so for the most part it'll be pretty simple for me to set something up ... except for... PINO!... Well... at least for now, lol. He's a suuuuper private guy (hence why he hasn't done anything in an interview format like this for a loooong time... last thing I've seen was that old BBC thing). That said, I've got a few irons in the fire, so its not impossible... just a patience thing. Anywho... thanks again for all the ideas (and keep em' coming if you have any more!)... and if do manage to land the Pino interview, I'll report back Scott8 points

The last of our "almost acoustic" gigs on Saturday night in Wroot near Doncaster. It's very much a village hall type venue, but the sound is always great. The original plan was to have an all-seated affair, which reduced capacity, and so it sold out within hours of being announced. As footage of our "almost acoustic" gigs started to appear on the internet, the promoter for this one realised that seating may not be appropriate due to all the p*ssed up punks going nuts. This meant he could up the capacity again, but it was a bit late to shift many more tickets (although apparently he did another 20). Anyway, there were plenty for the room, we sold loads of merch, went down really well, and got loads of free pizza and beer. I don't think it gets much better than that! I've been finding these gigs really easy in terms of physical effort. We've got loads of the "full band" gigs booked for this year and I'm worried I'll not be up to it. Better get exercising! There are loads of photos on Facebook in our "Headsticks Gigs" group but I'm not sure it's polite to just nick them for here. The venue is cool anyway, lots of fairy lights etc.7 points

Was looking forward to this one for a while - We got a new guitarist just before christmas and we have been rehearsing with him all of january to see if we could get enough songs for a gig. Well, he has done very well so we thought we could do it. The venue was a place we have never been that just contacted us through facebook, in a town we have never played. Walking in it could go either way, its a social club like many others, can be grim, can be friendly. Setup in a corner and got going (earlier start than usual). The new guitarist did fantastically, the sound which I had been fiddling around with was perfect, and the crowd responded to every song. In the end, we got to the 'we have run out of songs' with 2 in the pocket to go, they begged us to do 4 more songs, including 2 we had already done, for extra money, so basically ended up doing Mustang Sally and Park life for £40 extra All the drinks were free and snacks afterwards. Great night.5 points

Well this was/is the holy grail of combo’s and extensions for me. I’m in a weakened state and the Combo is a Tad heavy, C4 is ok. I offer both as the ultimate dual channel rig, the reason I bought it, wet and dry inputs worked a treat, but at a cost to me weight wise. Immaculate condition, work as they should, and those tiny drivers move some air. I was lucky enough to get my hands on this little beauty from Facebook sales about 3 years ago for £50! For both! Having been a massive Jesus Lizard and Shellac fan (Bob Weston is the boss) for many many years, I couldn't believe my luck! Both dated 1980, the original 120watt speaker was blown when I bought it but I still have it get reconed, I enquired at the time and it was stupidly expensive, so ive shelved that project for another time. I used it a number of times in the studio and practice but I don't really feel comfortable taking it out live given how much of a rare beast it is. I've seen a fair few Traynor TS-50B's but ive never seen another TS-120B, has anyone else had any experience with one? From my understanding, and that of Essex Amp Repairs, its the same preamp as the TS-50B but has more power and an EQ. The lads at Essex Amp Repairs absolutely loved it and asked if I could leave it with them!4 points

Hurtsfall supported Byronic Sex & Exile at The Angel in Nottingham last night. Got a small but very enthusiastic audience out on a Sunday night for two fairly niche acts, but we made some new fans and it looks as though we'll be playing the final night of this year's Goth City festival in July as a result. Sound wasn't quite as good on stage as last time we played The Angel, nothing that we couldn't cope with though. BS&E were fairly quiet FoH so I'm wondering if there has been a policy of turning the bands down since our last gig here. No photos on Facebook yet, but I could see people taking them, so I'm sure there will one or two up in the next couple of days. Next up it's three weekends of gigs with In Isolation during March followed by Hurtsfall on "Goth Friday" in April. Busy times...4 points

In my last band most of the gigs were with provided rigs or gear shares, I rarely used my own amp. So I decided that it was best to get my sound from a preamp so I could get it, and most importantly send it to FOH at every gig.4 points

I'd never talk you out of it, definitely worth a go! A few things I found after playing a while that I hadn't initially considered though: * the mwah type sound is great, but can feel a bit gimmicky after a while and not a good fit for many types of music * better my intonation got, the less different it started sounding from my fretted bass (so I started wondering why I was bothering...) * I found setups a bit more painful to do myself (getting the right level of buzz, avoiding dead spots, etc.) * needs regular playing to keep intonation good (if I don't play mine for a week, I really notice how sloppy I sound...) but they are great fun4 points

My first gig with a new band and my first gig since an outdoor, Covid restricted, livestream gig in the summer of 2020. It was at a social club and was OK. Not as tight as I'm used to, but it was a bit of a rush as I only joined the band mid last month and we had to add more numbers at short notice. A new genre for me too, a Mod band. Given that I'm not a massive fan of '60s music (despite growing up at that time) and positively dislike a lot of that ilk, this was an odd choice for me. However, it's the first opportunity I've had to get back into a band, so I didn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Played my first gig on a short scale and it was a lot of fun, my JMJ Mustang certainly rising to the occasion and being bang on sonically and visually. Another gig at a Mod bash next month, part of a 4 band line up. We'll see how that goes. Great to out playing again.4 points

So after a crap start to the day with the pickup sale saga, I had a change in my positive mental attitude and went ahead and bought a hofner 500:1 contemporary series bass….(second hand) with a case…. I’ve wanted one for ages. My 76 jazz bass is insanely good but as a few of you know my bones are goosed and the weight isn’t ideal. And so the hofner itch has been scratched! i think I got a great deal On it, although had to travel a fair trot to get it but what the heck! it sounds fantastic but is strung with rounds, I’m a flats man and I use Ernie ball cobalt flats but guess I need short scale for this hofner so I’m not sure eb cb flats come in short scale….? any suggestions guys for a nice set of flats short scale? Not something I’ve ever looked for before….and as this bass is “lightweight” should I not be using my normal 100-45’s and maybe go a touch lighter? I don’t want to snap the thing in half ! 😝 set up isn’t too bad, but could possibley be squeezed a little More lower action ….. the bridge adjusters are pretty much bottomed out though so I guess it’s a “sand the bottom of bridge feet” job like I’ve done on new double bass bridges in the past…. Also, I can’t work out what size truss rod key is? Cant even see down the flippin hole! Any one know that off hand? playing, well it’s small… very small….playing with a puck seems the likely solution …. I’m a fingers guy, anyone else play a hof with fingers ?3 points

Drilled and gouged out the slots (the only description really) a bit of a mess unfortunately, with hindsight I'd have just chopped out a square flat recessed platform (I could still re appraise & do this in fact) I've got one of those powerfile things which would be ok-ish for that option, tho too big for the individual slots. All this was not helped by the fact the wood is very cheap, and breaks out easily, the paint ditto, so makes a tidy job rather more difficult The neat individual slots is one for the proper craftsmen and router operators I think, still was worth a try. I'll try the bridge units in and see if they need deeper recess, and take a view then. I could make some kind of surround thing to neaten it up perhaps, hey ho..3 points

My mum was into old big band stuff, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin etc. and loved The Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Small Faces. My dad wasn't really into music as such, but he did like Hall & Oates. The Carpenters and a bit of Philly soul. [Edit]. My brother is ten years older than me. Never connected with what he listened to other than it was rock (ELP, Yes, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin etc.); he did buy me singles...see next paragraph. So, my first musical loves were off a diet of big-brother purchased 7" singles; Sweet, Sparks, Mott The Hoople, early Queen. Oddly, we had an LP of the King & I soundtrack that I still adore to this day. Latched onto punk, primarily The Clash, Television and The Heartbreakers. While there was always music in my life, there were bands that really took precedence. Rich Kids, early Van Halen (pre-Hagar), early Japan (first three albums), The Alarm, Big Country, Living Colour, Jellyfish, Shudder To Think, NIN, The Wildhearts, 3 Colours Red, Sugar, Veruca Salt, Counting Crows, Fountains Of Wayne. The only regret is not appreciating XTC until some time after they'd called it quits. They have to be one of the greatest bands this country have produced. Yeah, I know people will go, 'What about the Beatles?' If you're interested, go and dip into the XTC catalogue and see how they grew from the angular angsty punk/powerpop of White Music (1978) through to their final album, 2000's Wasp Star (by which point they were essentially a duo comprised of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding). It's astounding.3 points

I had Chromes on my P for a couple of years, started bright, died off nicely as you'd expect. I replaced them with La Bella flats and they instantly sounded like the worn in Chromes, straight out the pack. Lesson? Buy La Bella flats for Precisions Si3 points

Haha I've succumbed and ordered one - I was desperately trying to hold out but lasted about two weeks.. 😂 That's pretty much what my board will be - I think it will replace my current pre and my Aftershock so I'll likely be running mini Polytune, Capo, C4 and Atlas. Can't wait!3 points

Shot from the wings of Gig at a nice club in the centre of Barton-Upon-Humber last night. This one was an uphill battle, I’m still struggling with a dog inflicted injury (tripped on said dog and fell downstairs landing on a big toe - not broken but it’s not happy) and the singist’s voice was buggered from this persistent viral jobby that’s still doing the rounds. We got through it and the audience was appreciative but it definitely felt like a double shift. Hopefully we’ll all be in better nick next week for a return to a particularly nice club in Dronfield. Rock n roll eh? Only just spotted I’d left my mid spot banana energy booster on top of my minimalist pedal set up.3 points

Once its painted and the hardware in... not gonna be much to see... looks better than a step down platform. Good Darts! I'd still go for a Front pickup bezel someone on here 3D Printed some MM bezels - and Small Control plate ad there is no channel cut in the surface. At least my routing attempt of J to P was covered by a scratch plate... See... you're feeling better about ya job already!2 points

I grew up in the '50s hearing my Dad play Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Mugsy Spannier, Eartha Kitt, Lena Horne, Mozart, Beethoven, Hank Williams and Spike Jones. Meanwhile I was listening to Radio Luxemburg ("Your station of the stars") under the bed covers - Buddy Holly, Elvis etc, and it went on from there to Eddie Cochran, The Shadows, Tornados, and then came the Beatles and suddenly everything was in colour. I'm still obsessed with XTC. Yes, I agree, definitely one of the greatest bands this country has produced. Magnificent.2 points
