  4. Well, I did this; a 54 Reissue and it's lovely. I had a Sting Sig for ages and loved it apart from the stupid inlay so I decided to raid the gig funds and treat myself following a bit of very good news. It's got the Serial Number of V022 so it must be one of the first ones finished. It also comes with a bizarre warning/disclaimer from Fender about the ashtrays... Here it is with my AO 58 P Bass.

  6. Hi Kusku, The Sabre used to be mine between 1987 and 1998. I bought it used from Music Ground in York and eventually part exchanged it for a JayDee Calibas. The 2 necks were made in 1983. I've no idea of the John Deacon connection but he could easily have owned it in the 28 years since I sold it 😁 Here's an earlier thread with some more info : Sabre / Gordon Hope you don't mind me adding a few pics I have which shows that you have kept the bass in excellent condition 👍 (I can remove the pics if you like?) This thing is much more versatile than it appears, those PJ Lollar pickups can let you play in almost any kind of music. No neck dive and pretty decent 4,7 kgs.   13. What you've hit upon here is Pressure Vessel Gain, more commonly referred to in audio as Cabin Gain. It has to do not with the volume of air but the dimensions of the room. There is a sensitivity gain at a rate of up to 12dB per octave as frequency goes down below where the longest room dimension is one-half wavelength. In a living room that's 5 meters long cabin gain starts around 34Hz. In a car that's 2 meters long it starts at 85Hz. Cabin gain is what allows the silly high bass levels achieved in auto dB competitions. A club is too large to have any cabin gain, but in an ear canal it covers almost the entire audio range.

  16. With isobarik the result of using two drivers is halved Vas, the volume of air having the same acoustic compliance as the driver suspension. This allows halving the internal volume of the cabinet, not counting the space taken up by the second driver and the air space between the two drivers, without any loss of low frequency response. As always there is a trade off. In this case since the cone area and excursion radiating to the outside air is that of only one driver the maximum output is the same as with one driver in the net doubled cab volume. One could stuff the chamber of an isobarik, with the same result as with a standard alignment, lowered Q. Isobarik was a reasonable alternative to huge enclosures fifty years ago, when driver Vas was generally much larger than today. For instance, the fifteen inch Altec 421 8LF Vas was 600 liters. The modern equivalent Eminence 3015LF Vas is 159 liters.

  17. That's because stuffing doesn't make the cab look bigger. It lowers the cab Q, which can tame a midbass hump. Making the box larger does that, but making the box larger also lowers the speaker cutoff frequency, stuffing does not. Some 25 years ago a well respected audio expert measured some data and made the conclusion that stuffing made a box act as if it was larger. His conclusion was erroneous, because he didn't measure enough data to reveal what actually occurred. He published his conclusion, and based on his reputation alone much of the professional audio engineering community accepted it at face value without testing to make sure it was true. In both audio and nuclear arms treaties you can trust but you also must verify. 😉

  18. PRICE DROP - £700 Hi guys, I'm selling / trading this bass on because its surplus to requirments and it's not going to get used. It's an awesome rare-ish FGN bass (JMJ52ASHDEM) built in Matsumoko factory, Japan. The build quility is really top notch and it plays great. I part traded this bass a few months ago here on BC from BaggyMan, but have only used it at home a few times. Since I got another bass that I'm using as my primary this one needs to go. Preferabbly meet up or collection, but maybe we can sort out postage as well. I don't drive unfortunately tho. For trades just give me a shout with what you think fits the bill, not looking at anything particular atm. Hola cómo están todos, saludos desde Colombia, hace unos días estaba en busca de un bajo, llegué a una tienda de música en mi región y encontré un acuarius bass aqb 500, no sabía nada de la marca cuando lo probé me gustó el sonido por lo que lo adquirí, tiene todo original, aunque le reemplace los potenciómetros por unos cromados pero aún conservo los originales. Lo limpie brille, tiene detalles de uso como rayones, pero su parte eléctrica todo funciona muy bien. Me puse a investigar y aunque no se sabe cómo llego a Medellín Colombia, si me di de cuenta que es de 1983. Alguna recomendación al respecto en cuanto a este tipos de bajos. Ya que aquí en Colombia no es muy común ver uno de estos. Muestro las fotos de antes de adquirirlo y luego de la restauración.

  30. I can't help but think that this might be the thin end of the wedge. Like Warwick basses and their wax finish that has to be laboriously maintained by the owner( the thin end of the wenge, you might say) which saves Warwick the trouble and expense of finishing their basses. It starts with a screw hole and before you know it you will have to route your own truss rod channel. I put it to you that Fender, stung by criticism of their dubious quality control, and, have developed a strategy to gradually make the customer increasingly responsible for the manufacturing process. Five years from now when you buy a Fender bass you will get a box of parts, a sheet of instructions and a good luck message that also functions as a legal disclaimer.

  31. I've got wood! From G&B. Arrived quickly and is all looking high quality. I expected I'd need to sand it down a bit but it is all done already very smoothly. Compared against my Fender CIJ bass it seems almost identical in dimensions. If I was being picky then there is that small knot in the wood at the neck pocket that goes all the way through and seems to have had some filler to stabalise it - perhaps one of the worst places to have an inconsistency in the wood but I guess it won't really matter. And I know this is petty but it was advertised as 1.9kg and is actually closer to 2kg (could be my kitchen scales that are wrong though).

  36. I've given this a lot of thought! I want to support the range of arm based SBCs. I aim to use as much OSS as is possible OS wise I'm leaning towards Arch (which can be configured to be as lightweight as possible) ALSA and JACK seem almost no brainers. I'm leaning towards Carla as a audio host as it seems to support the widest range of plugin technologies available, tho I need to ensure that it will run on ARM Arch linux. UI wise I aim to ensure that the BMFX (Gotta come up with a better name!) will allow full tweaking from knobs/foot switches when gigging, but also allow easy config via a web based UI. My research is ongoing but I hope to have a workable prototype in the next wee while, details will be shared in my build diary. The goal is to build a unit that is intuitive to knob twitchers but also to midi/osc gangsters. We shall see if this is possible! S'manth xx

  43. Depends on what you want really @SteveXFR. I've done live recordings which are completely down to the proficiency of the players how it turns out. There is a middle ground which I tend to prefer which is to play live, but the guitarist and bass player go straight in via software or pedals. This allows you to keep drum room sound and as you have the DI's, you can reamp them afterwards to get the sounds you want without unnecessary bleed. Plus you have the ability to correct mistakes.   45. Picked up my first short scale Here she is with my old smoothie, a US of A Musicman Stingray with roasted maple neck. It’s got the factory round wounds on it atm (EB slinky’s) which I love but I’ve got some labella short scale 42-100LTF I got sent by mistake awhile ago so I’m going to try them and see how she thumps. Absolutely love the tones from the passive circuitry, but still capable of that classic stingray growl if you dial it in. At 30” it feels tiny, but so easy to play. well chuffed.
