I applied for the Music degree with Bass at ACM and I've had confirmation that I've got an audition in a couple of weeks! EEEEK. It's the day after my birthday as well so no drinking for me lol! I've decided to do Bombtrack by Rage against the machine as my performance piece, but I need to revise my theory as there's other bits I have to do to show my understanding of theory, groove, timing etc. OH GOD.

In my book it’s bad form to join a band with the intention of ousting or complaining about an existing member. So don’t join. At most give that as a reason for not joining, if that member is not the one you're talking to.

A couple of weeks ago Alan sent me some options for how the book matching for the front and back should look, I chose to go with these front and back: Today he sent me these fresh out of the press: Awesome figuring that's so well fitted to the shape of the guitar. I'm proper excited now...

Remember, you are also auditioning them. They want your money, so don't be afraid about questioning them as to why they should be the ones to get it.

Ear plugs and always remember to never utter ‘man that be-atch can’t sing’ should get you through it. Seriously though, if it grates on you now it will only get worse, I’d say walk now and be fair to them in getting another bassist in time for gigging when we’re allowed out to play.

All bands will always be judged on the ability or not of their LEAD singer. It took me 10 years to realise this with the addition of our female lead singer whoi can sing her donkey off, Before this we had muddled along with our guitarist taking lead duties. OK we got asked back but it was always the elephant in the room. You can be the greatest rhytmn section ever, the greatest guitarist since Hendrix, but if the singer 'aint cutting it live, forget it; you'll always be that band who would be great if they got a decent vocalist. Walk now..

Sanded the panel down, back to bare metal in places, then re-primed and re-top-coated it. Printed off another set of transfers and managed to apply them to the right parts of the panel, As they started to dry, they started to peel off - it seems that they don't stick to a matt paint finish. Dug out my time-expired dry transfers and applied a simplified set of control legends. They appear to be staying on, and now have two coats of lacquer to help them. Assuming no more problems here, I can start to reassemble it tomorrow. David

Now this is definitely something not to be rushed, whether fitted in between other stuff or not. Cutting the fret slots. I am using a radius block as my positioning guide and to keep the saw blade completely vertical: I use a spatula marked with the tang depth to ensure that the slot is deep enough across its whole length: 6 done and 15 to go. I'll do a few more tomorrow if I get a spare half hour:

Switch to original music and make her voice a feature of what you do. There are lots of great, great bands making great, great music with singers who would be viewed traditionally as "unmusical" 😀

Good evening, Bruce, and ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. A tale of woe indeed; commiserations. It won't help you much to know that I'm in a similar state (minus the head injury...), and still play bass, drums, keys and guitar, mostly for my own pleasure, but occasionally when our group is invited to perform for a local event. I'm drifting towards 71 next birthday, and it's very unlikely that all the gear collected over more than half a century get used in public in earnest. The increasing deafness, and associated increasing tinnitus is being partially compensated for by becoming more blasé about it all. I still remember my favourite music (Schubert, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Bruckner, Bowie etc...), so I've had a good run. My gear is 'old school', so will be worth more in another century or so as collector stuff, being very much out of fashion, but as I never acquired any of it with a view to invest, I care not a jot. I have the space to keep it all, and a room to play it when I want, so... Gardening is very much over-rated as a retirement occupation, too, I've found. Keen, for decades, but unable now to dig more than a metre or two, obliged to do weeding lying down, relying on a (very excellent...) chum for mowing etc... I keep it to the most simple expression (see the 'Gardening' section here; there are several others doing their best...). What else can you do..? Exactly that : do your best, as do we all..! Life gives you lemons..? Make lemonade..! Set low targets and goals and you'll not disappoint yourself; in fact you'll be surprised how often you exceed them..! Chin up and soldier on. Douglas

Picked it up today. Truss rod works, but contra: Lefty tighty righty loosy. Neck is awesome. Stringspacing tighter then the Yam. Strings on it are at least a decade old though... A new pack of Fodera strings arrives on wednesday.

Picked up this Thunder 1A a couple of months ago from @geoff90guitar . Could see it was fundamentally a solid instrument that just needed a bit of fettling. Had a neck shim in which wasn’t actually needed so that came out, & there was a stuck solid pick up screw that my local guitar shop (Kempsters) sorted for me. Other than that, just a load of elbow grease on all parts. It’s 39 years old with some just right minimal mojo - very pleased with the end result! 🙂

5.4kg on the bathroom scale. Not the lightest ever bass. The Yamaha weighs in at 4.8kg.

Hi Bruce, Sad to hear about your problems and I can empathise with the deafness and tinnitus you suffer. In line with the comments made by Dad3353 (including his ones on gardening😁) you will find that there is plenty to amuse you on here and probably even more you could comment on based on your experience. All I would say is stay positive and do anything that takes your fancy - not a cure all but could re-focus your energy and enjoyment for the future. Alan

My tuppence worth: If you have the patience to get up to speed with patch creation and editing, particularly with the aid of freely available PC editing software, then multifxs can be fantastic pieces of kit and give you access to all those sounds you might want to use occasionally but don't warrant the PB space and expense of a dedicated pedal. Dedicated pedals for your "core" fx sounds will often have the edge in a head to head, unless you're spending serious £££ on a multifx and sometimes even then e.g. the Helix is not going to match a decent filter or synth pedal. If you're not sure whether patch creation on a multi is for you, then maybe dip your toe into the water with something budget like a Zoom before upgrading to a Helix; they're surprisingly good, certainly for the money. I've had both and have happily ended up with a Zoom B1-4 at the core of my PB combined with dedicated pedals:

Constant pedal buying and selling was why I went back to a multi a few years back with the Boss and then "upgraded" to the Helix Stomp. I bought and sold pedals all the time to try to find the right sound but also had to battle interference issues, pedal board space, more links in the chain for things to go wrong. Then when I got a good quality bass multi I realised that most of the effects were there for small parts of individual songs and really it was good solid bass tones, and by that I mean amp and cab and EQ sounds, that made it for me. Review how you use effects to see if one of these is worth it for you. Even when I was in love with my Boss multi I'd still do some rehearsals and even gigs without any pedals at all in the chain because my covers band didn't need it as much as it needed a big solid bass tone.
