  1. Tom was ace. bit of a complicated situation, new guitarist messaged two days ago, his other half had a covid test due to symptoms and they had to isolate. Hoping that test comes back negative so we can crack on. Tom turned up with a stage piano, a strat, an acoustic and a vox amp. he plays guitar well, decent rhythm player... sings beautifully. He wants to come back, we had a laugh. Next Tuesday, we should be in a room again. tested the new Zoom H4n - what a great thing that is.

  2. Updates! Haven't made too much progress but still cracking on when time allows! Got the pickup cover glued up and rough sanded so it fits in place, need to prepare some screw mounting holes in the corners and you can see the tear out from my planer on some of the Wenge so that will need a quick fill but nothing major. I've used Ash to indicate where the pickups will be lying under the cover so I can ensure I play over the top of them. You can see these from the top too when in playing position. I popped a little bit of Ash around the entire edge too as I think it helps make it look classy, what it will definitely do is allow me to see if I have the cover level when installed on the bass. I've made some Wenge knobs too so everything matches up, the grain on this selection of Wenge is crazy, it's a bugger to sand but I think with some perseverance it's going to look lovely. Next! Electronics cavity routing and start the cavity cover, finish the body contour shaping and sanding. I'm still focused on getting the body and all it's parts finished first before cracking on with the neck!

  3. So after reading the thread about Cliff Williams of AC/DC getting a signature Stingray it reignited the want for one. I love Stingrays but have ever managed to “tame” the sound, but then I’ve only ever had the 3eq versions. I have however read that the 2eq is beefier sounding so thought, I’ll give one a try if a black/black/maple one comes along. And it did at the weekend on EBay. Sealed the deal, delivered today. Like an excited child I got home and to work on a clean/set-up and in honour of Cliff, a set of D’Addario Chromes. It’s a 1987 model with the truss rod adjuster in the headstock, and the silver battery cover. It has some nice authentic road wear on it, nothing hideous, just the signs of a 30+ year old gigged instrument. But all that doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t enjoy playing it. Well I settled down in front of YouTube to some of my fave covers and an hour and a half passed in an instant, yes, the ‘Ray passed the test, I love playing it, and yes, the 2eq is beefier sounding. Oh, the beauty in question, well it’s as below.

  6. Fender Japan Jazz Bass, non-export AFAIK, in Candy Apple Red with matching headstock. Year dates as 'I' plus six digits, so around '89/'90. Mint green 'guard and currently sporting a '60/'61 stackpot circuit, though the original VVT circuit and plate will be supplied at sale price, along with a Fender Tweed case. Absolutely no issues and has a nice, tight Jazz Bass sound; even acoustically it has some bite! Listed as in very good condition. No trades or swaps, please.

  7. And received it today. And it’s true about the 2-eq having more grunt, much more to my taste, looks like I’ve a whole lotta (had to chuck that in) AC/DC songs to learn now.

  8. Hi Guys! Here's my Custom Bass for Sale. Buckeye Burl Emperor 5 Bolt-On This Emperor 5 Bolt-on was built with a Mahogany body and Ebony fingerboard, this instrument has a rich and articulate tone with powerful lows, growling mids, and clear, bell-like highs. This bass was also built with a 3-way coil tap switch that allows the Seymour Duncan dual coil pickups to it to be played in dual coil, outside single coil, and inside single coil modes. This bass also features an incredible Buckeye Burl top and Mother of Pearl tulip inlays at the 12th and 24th fret! Cheers! Tamas

  9. Now sold!! Up for very reluctant sale is my gorgeous Sandberg California TT4 Passive, finished in a really deep Natural Highgloss (which highlights the lovely grain on the swamp ash body) with Rosewood fretboard and Whitepearl Blocks, and weighing in at a very lightweight 7lb 1.9oz!! This bass has barely left the house since purchase from Kytary in December 2018. I actually used it for the first time in the studio just a few weeks back (it sounded awesome and even drew compliments from our drummer!), so is in pretty much mint condition. The only marks I can find are on the top of the headstock (please see pic) and some light swirling on the scratchplate. I've had some work done on it by The Bass Gallery in Camden, basically I felt the neck was a little fat, so I had them shave a couple of mm off the shoulders and completely remove the satin varnish, so it now feels and plays just like my other Bergs. Other than that, it's completely stock. Sandberg have confirmed the date of manufacture as 30th April 2018 and also shared the spec code (see below). I'm assuming the pickups are Sandbergs own, but can't read the code well enough to know for sure, prehaps any Sandberg buffs will be able to advise? Either way, it sounded awesome in the mix, really balanced tone throughout the range and cut through no problem. Code: CANT1-TT:S-SPS-4S-34-HG-NT-SWP-NOT-RWF-F-WB-NOM-CRH-CLT-PS-BP-X-RH I really don't want to sell this bass, but a new venture needs funding so this (and my car!) have to go. Comes in its Sandberg gig bag. Please contact me to discuss shipping, collection in person from BN22 is much preferred. Payment by BACs is preferable. Thanks for looking!

  13. Pickup holes sorted. I also used this as a template to mark the routes on the body. As the Precision pickup is under the pickguard I just routed it out freehand. I made a template for the Jazz pickup though. I actually made two, the first one wasn't good enough. The second one wasn't great, but good enough for me. And here's them both done. Hopefully to the correct depth! you can also see where I moved the bridge back on this one.

  15. The cheaper cabs in this list, @stewblack (the first four) all have ceramic magnet drivers. Barefaced also use ceramic magnets. The more expensive ones are fitted with neo drivers, which is what you'd expect. Those Harley Bentons are ridiculously cheap. As a DIY'er, it would be difficult to build a poplar ply cab for those prices - never mind buying the drivers.

  16. Either: a) You're not wrong b) it's all on a level far deeper than any of us can understand I tend toward a). especially having read the Derek Bailey autobiography. Though having read the Derek Bailey autobiography b) is also quite possible! And here's a Yes live performance before production and overdubs 😄😎

  20. I've been a bit lazy with updates, and I forget to take pix at times, but there has been progress ... Basic neck shaping: A bit of a jump as I forgot to take pix, but it's shaped, varnished and tuners added: Headstock - router split a bit off at the top early on! Oh well, I ain't a pro and I ain't that fussy!

  21. Well, after a 7 month hiatus and 3 false starts it looks like the band's first gig will be this coming Saturday. Local WMC, socially distanced and all done for 10pm. It will be odd playing to a sit down crowd but anything is appreciated after this length of time.

  23. Our original guitarist had a habit of threatning to quit when band votes didn't go his way. We usually had to spend a couple of days, talking him down and get him to agree to whatever it was that we had voted to do (which he would then deny agreeing to when the gig was due). The last straw was when he stropped off 10 days before we were due to leave for a small tour of the North west USA. This time, we didn't try to talk him round, just called up the guitarist of a Canadian band who'd played with us a few times and flew him to Oregon for the tour. The tour went great, we had a whale of a time, lined up a new guitarist for when we got home and I never had to speak to the whinging tw@t old guitarist ever again.

  24. So, after sitting in its case mostly since I purchased on here earlier this year, I’m thinking of letting this beast go. This is a stunning unique little bass, built by Chapman for Dave Hollingworth from Toska. It’s a 4 basically designed to be drop tuned, fanned fret 35 - 32.75 (same ratio as a Dingwall, just shorter (more sensible!) scale length overall). Obviously, due to it only being 35 max, it’s fantastic in E standard too, indeed that is how it’s currently tuned! It’s very Warwick esque in its build, fancy woods and a wonderful curved body. Sounds really nice, super articulate. Full specs below. Looking to pick something up more traditional so I’m moving this on. It’s in great condition, just a nick near the bottom shown in the pics. Comes with its full hard case. £1,500 new, now discontinued, not sure how many were made in the end but they are hard to find. 25. Still unsure as to whether to shift this or not so putting the feelers out there to gauge interest... First lockdown project/build with my limited skill set, pictures of build progress available on request ’51 Slab body precision bass Body from guitarbuild.com Neck from eBay (headstock reshaped by myself) 38mm nut Unknown brand but solid machine heads Seymour Duncan SCPB-3 pickup Rosewood thumb rest solid bass built up and painted (not a perfect finish, bit patchy on the back, but perfectly acceptable) by myself, couple of dings here and there but nothing you’d notice from more than 4 feet away there are a couple of extra holes that happened when I was installing the thumb rest (experimenting with positioning) one that I had to fill with a dowel and some wood glue (snapped screw head and not the greatest execution of getting it out) the other is just where a screw has been in and out, both are covered by the pick guard, pick guard isn’t perfect around the control plate but I have ordered some new material in the hope I’ll make a better job of it next time, not really noticeable unless your really looking Will need ferrules if you want to string through body, I haven’t done this so didn’t get any at the time of the build Had to make and install a shim for under the bridge in order to get it setup to a decent standard, have since installed brass saddles but happy to discuss putting the ones in the pictures back on with any potential buyers there are a couple of dead spots (3 or 4 in fact) on the frets so a little bit of a level is required, I don’t have the skills to do it myself and haven’t gotten round to getting it done by someone else due to the situation All sounds terrible doesn’t it?! Essentially all it really needs is a little fret level on a few spots and it’s good to go! It is a solid bass that does sound just grand not really sure what this is worth to be honest so willing to listen to offers if the interest is there, price listed is what it cost me to put together, nothing more... happy to consider trades for something a bit Warwick-y, Spector-y, Ibanez-y or musicman-y with cash either way if it calls for it, may also consider CAR jazz neck profile precisions or something acoustic-y MAY consider parting out if there’s enough interest in all the bits and bobs any further pictures required, throw me a PM and I’ll get some sorted

  33. @Dad3353, @Woodinblack etc. People's comments on the offtopicness notwithstanding, I've now been able to listen to that Bailey vid with the dancer that @Leonard Smalls posted. Worthless shïte! Anybody can do that! He's taking the Mickey! 😁 Seriously: I can hear absolutely nothing of value to me here, except maybe the obvious shamisen reference. It's also not the Derek Bailey as I remember him from 35 or 40 years ago, if that makes sense. My point remains: a Yes album you don't like is not necessarily without value. A Bach fugue you don't like is not necessarily a worthless composition. Etc. etc. Only blues music is worthless. 😁

  34. "Celebrity" has taken on a very broad meaning these days. Years ago, when we only had two or three TV channels, everyone tended to watch the same programmes - like Morecambe and Wise getting around twenty five million viewers for their Christmas show. Now, with the plethora of channels, Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube and all the social media outlets, we are all watching different things. From the list given, Gary Sinise is the only one I really recognised as I have seen him in the TV series CSI New York. Even then, without a picture of him I would have struggled to place the name. I have heard of a couple of others but have never seen them in anything. I don't watch films (apart from Toy Story with the grandkids!) and very rarely watch TV these days. I follow my interests which include bass playing (obviously) cycling, winter sports and music (mainly modern country and Christian). I could not name one current footballer, cricketer or rugby player. I would probably recognise a name or two if you were to mention them, but off the top of my head I could not name any. I could list loads of professional cyclists, skiers and country music performers that most people would not know about - that's where we are with a fragmented media. I see the names of "great" bass players mentioned on this forum and rock and metal bands but they mean nothing to me as I don't listen to that type of music. Never assume that everyone knows who you are talking about. The main stream media seem to manufacture "celebrities" by the dozen. They get their limited fifteen minutes of fame on some 'reality' show then fade from view. I'm happy in my own little world!

  38. I spent ages checking and double checking bridge placement and here I am drilling the holes. After all that I wasn't happy with the placement so I filled these and re-drilled new ones! bl**dy amateur! This is the pickguard paper template stuck onto the plastic. Took a lot of faffing getting the shape how I wanted. And this is the basic cutout, done with jigsaw, files, sanding etc. I have now worked out and marked pickup placement.

  39. I’m not suggesting they ‘give away’ a greater value product and it’d be fair to say I wasn’t proposing or suggesting they hey do. But with synth bass being all over modern music and folks gravitating to multi fx to access these types of sounds it’s a tad of an oversight. I’ve got four of five patches on my stomp which cop a really solid job of synth my sounds to emulate the idiosyncrasies of said synths by ‘playing the effect’ I can get a pretty good approximation with no exhausted DSP. It’s be fair to say one of the big hopes folks had for this in light of the recent boss releases would have been elements of those new effects to be included. What Boss have done is repackage the 200 series effects into a pedal board and that might be where this unit excels but when many folks were keen to have some synth (emulation or otherwise) it’s a bit of a miss when they have also got those units in their product range. Sure Boss were the daddies of stomp boxes and I’ve used many of them- still have my boss tuner on my board -They’re very durable pedals designed for the gig but the birth of boutique pedals was born out of people wanting to expand upon the boss pedals and their ‘limitations’ or what those early pioneers saw as limiting elements. You’d feel that they would want to offer some of those synth patches to encourage folk to buy the fully loaded pedals be that the SY1 which doesn’t cost more than the Core or the full on top of the line sy1000. But hey I’ve no skin in the game. I get all I need from the humble stomp.

  41. Just reading that the Core won’t have any of the new SY synth engine sounds available so not too much has changed in porting the unit to a smaller form factor which may leave a lot of fans/folk a little disappointed. You’d have though a mega corp would deliver their new tech into their latest gear and along with it more value to the customer. It looks like those of us wanting to get a good filter and synth sound will now have to factor in the cost of two extra pedals on top of an already eye watering £600 considering the cost of the competition. Come on Boss give the fans what they want.

  43. Respect; you have your reasons for posting this, and that's fine. All I see is the 'evidence' I see. My 'knowledge' and meager experience leads me to believe, possibly falsely, that the bloke's playing nothing of any value, excepting, if I'm being generous, to himself. He may be a quiet genius, but he's not showing any sign of that to me. He doesn't have to, naturally; he does (as I do...) exactly what he wants, and needs no permission, from me nor anyone else. What I've seen and heard doesn't incite me to look further, or deeper. I've some affinity with 'free' stuff , and enjoyed Ron Gleeson concerts, or Pete Brown in his day, but until and unless I see something different, my opinion of this fellow remains. If others enjoy his work, that's fine. I'll need a lot more convincing, and I've not that many decades left for that to happen. Sorry, but it's not for me. Kudos for defending his work; and, I repeat: respect.

  44. Bass and drums are a symbiotic relationship of love and respect. No one needs to lead or follow because we are reading each other's minds. It is a beautiful thing But if the drummer is rubbish I will lead and I just do not care. If I start playing straight crotchets my wife knows I am not enjoying the gig. She knows I am wrestling with at least one member of the band. And to be fair it could be any member of the band. Don't get me wrong, I am not "all that" but I know where 1 is and I know where the next 1 should be.
