I think it depends on the music. Some music needs silly costumes and dance routines to carry it. Other music really doesn't I saw Tool a few years ago and Maynard hardly moved for the whole set. It was a truly awesome gig. If he started jumping around and shouting "Manchester are you ready to rock?" it would have seemed a little inappropriate.2 points

Yes it has. It's in a list of features that hopefully be re-instated at some point in the near future. In the mean time you can achieve the same result by clicking on the "bullet" icon next to the topic title rather than the title itself when you want to read a topic. You can also find new posts in a topic by scrolling down until you see an orange line in-between posts. This line divides the posts you have already read from the new ones.2 points

They really are everywhere. It's practically impossible to avoid them. It's rare to find a band of like-minded people who want the same things you do - and on those very rare occasions when they're found, it's a beautiful thing! How about a band of musicians who are all bass players (but can also sing and play drums, guitar, keys, etc)? You'd have a bunch of very reliable people and know where you stood and what was going on. Singers, guitarists and drummers (who aren't also bass players) are a pain in the a r s e !!2 points

Bit of a fan early on, liked the first album & absolutely loved Purple. Saw them on that tour ('95?) and thought they were the best live band I'd ever seen. On later, sober reflection, I concluded that while they'd been a powerful & polished band who represented their recorded work admirably, my excessive enthusiasm might well have been linked to a sneaky tab of MDMA which had somehow found its way into my system. They are not a standard size, so you will struggle to replace them without leaving gaps unless you get some custom pickup surrounds made up, you might have to do some additional routing also. Why in such a hurry before you've even heard what the stock ones sound like? The stock pickups are louder, more lows and less highs than typical PJs, but they sound great. If you want to drop replacements straight in, you would be better off looking at one of the newer BB models (e.g. BB235, 435, 735A) that use traditional size pickups. The stock ones on the new models are voiced more like vintage pickups (more mids/highs, less lows) and you may be surprised to find they sound as good as whatever you were planning on putting in there!2 points

Bass now SOLD Lovely 1990 MIJ Tune Bass Maniac 4 string bass. These basses were the original Japanese design that inspired the whole Bass Collection and Ibanez SR range basses. You don't see many for sale because they are pretty awesome and people hang on to them. Ash body with 3-piece laminated maple neck, brass nut. Light as a feather yet still with an authoritative tone that does not get lost with a band. So easy to play it almost plays itself. Very slim neck, 37.5mm nut width. When I got the bass I was very impressed with the ergonomics and playability but not so much with the pickups or preamp. So, it now sports a Tonerider/Wilkinson PJ setup with passive Jazz bass pickups wired VVT (the 4th pot is a dummy pot). Personally, I think it is hugely improved. Great for pretty much any style I guess. Condition is superb for a 27 yr old bass. The neck is immaculate and straight as a die. Probably the loveliest neck of any bass I have ever played. Fret wear is very minimal. The body is generally in excellent condition with a couple of dings and a few other very minor swirls and scuffs. It is not a museum piece, but the general impression is of a bass in excellent condition. I bought this bass from Dandelion, of this forum, and I did trace the original owner, who is also a member here, although with the loss of all my PMs with the website format change I cannot remember who it is and now have no record. I do remember that the original owner told me that the bass was bought new in Spain in 1990 and did have the "Made in Japan" sticker on the cavity cover when new. The sticker is identical in every way to my other MIJ Tune bass. I mention all this because Tune changed production to Korea in or around 1990-91 and this bass has some transitional hardware, more common with MIK basses. However, I can confirm that this bass was made in Japan. Price is £229 posted to you in mainland UK, which I consider an absolute bargain for a classic MIJ bass. Will be sent in a battered but protective hard case. Payment by Paypal gift or bank transfer only please. Collection from me in the Southampton area would also be just fine, and would involve a saving of £15 for you ! No trades thanks. With my solo bass gigs it’s just me. I toyed with the idea of using film as a back drop. I make my own films to fit my music, but decided a projector was too much else to carry around. There’s no show as such, and very little conversation, just a thank you at the end. People coming along mostly know what to expect. I get people sitting quietly, eyes closed, I’ve had people meditate too, that started at a gig I did in Paris in April. That was great because I realised that people had finally started to understand what I do.1 point

Yeah the BB42x/102x series pickups have metal surrounds on them anyway so I reckon you could just get some new ones made to fit the new pickups? I will say, however, that the stock pickups in these basses are some of the best I’ve used in any bass. Give the BB a good trial in stock config before dumping a load of money on upgrades - video demos won’t do it full justice.1 point

In the old models I think you are right, they are sized differently, bigger I think. The new BBP range is normal size. i think you could get a custom pickguard to cover any ills and make it look swish?1 point

I feel for you on the band front. Scary echoes to one of my own projects. I provide a killer PA, all players have wireless IEM systems available to them, I do all the funding of the band, I do all the promo - all I ask is that people make themselves available to do the recording. 12 months on and I'm still waiting for those tracks to be completed. i think because they have no financial input, ultimately things are difficult. They are available for gigs (sometimes) - yet complain about the fees. They know of my ability to run a band and get it earning some crazy good money... yet they do nothing to help it work. Yet they want the money. It's amazing I'm actually able to land any gigs with zero promo available. Funny isn't it? You can't gift some people a band.1 point

Some more words around the 250HZ High Pass Filter; via a nice summary here that I found online. I have used the high pass filter with great results in a live setting: The Eight Key Ranges of Bass EQ There is a lot you can sculpt with bass EQ – well, there is a lot more frequency range than you might think. In simple terms we can think of it like this - here are eight ranges and the type of work you can perform in each area. Boomy (40 Hz – 90 Hz) Fat (75 Hz – 150 Hz) Thin (40 Hz – 180 Hz) Power (40 Hz – 150 Hz) Impact (40 Hz – 150 Hz) Clarity (190 Hz – 800 Hz) Presence (800 Hz – 6.5 kHz) Attack (120 Hz – 4.1 kHz) Those first five are all sub-250 Hz. However, look at what you can do above that. Presence and attack can reach as far as 6.5 kHz. Then we have what might be the most important of all; Clarity.1 point -

There are sometimes bargains to found after the NAMM music show in late January. NAMM tends to be when the big manufacturers unveil their new models and at the same time announce which lines are being replaced and upgraded. A couple of years ago the Fender USA Deluxe line was replaced by the Americal Elite line, immediately after that Deluxes were being sold at £500 discounts. This year it was the Yamaha BBs, although that was announced at Summer NAMM in June. The 424/5s and 1024/5s were discontinued and the old stock was on sale for approaching half price.1 point

Apart from my bassly duties, I dive into a lot of our marketing work (posters, logo, packaging, merch etc) which is becoming increasingly important these days. I'm also the most nitpicky guy of the four of us, and spend hours listening to our rehearsals and studio recordings to spot when the magic happens (or doesn't). Fascinated with the mixing process too so generally involved in that.1 point

Q - massive well done for doing that, mate. Pedals are a slippery slope of musigatory (yes I know that's not a word) delight and very easy to get sucked in. I think folk like @dannybuoy and @GisserD are very impressive / disciplined at moving stuff on once they've decided they've got something better and actually that's to the rest of our benefit for sure - I've still got first dibs on your PM2 Darren, btw I've had quite a big splurge this year on various bits of gear, too, but I've tried to broadly keep the bigger picture of 'how is this going to fit in with either my gigging or being creative' at the back of my mind at all times. And with the more expensive stuff e.g. basses it's been broadly a case of one in one out so I'm ending the year with four instead of the three (not including a relatively inexpensive Stagg EUB) and the same also with amps (2 combos and one separate amp & cab at year end as compared to 3 combos at the start of year). Can't say there hasn't been a bit of an upgrade along the way, though! (I'm justifying that to myself as my bands are starting to do functions as well as pub gigs now ). Speaking of which it is kinda interesting just how 'high-end' some of our gear that we take for granted is on this forum is compared to 'Joe-bass-player'. Me and @KotorTom were in PMT Cambridge on Saturday and found they only stocked Ashdowns and Orange amp heads. Markbass was considered too 'high end' for their customers - which is amusing given the amount of stick I've had for my trusty Markbass combo from some of my BC buddies! What we do need to get you to do is a proper full on comparative review of all your filters just like the marvellous one @Bo0tsy posted at the start of this thread (actually Bo0tsy if you fancy 'cleaning up' via an edit of your post so that all the 'upgrade' clutter is removed, that would be marvellous - or just delete and repost if you've got it saved elsewhere). Another big fan and I am thrilled they have found a way to keep going. They wrote some fantastic tunes and it would have been a shame to just stop because of Scott. Rob is a superb player and has always been great to listen to, he can be so busy but it just works so well. From what I have managed to find out, I think the bass is made by their guitar tech, I believe he also made his brothers telecaster.1 point

This gave me some serious gip at first. Still does. Just when I think yep got this , there's another little great run I haven't quite got. we gig this now and it took me some 6 weeks of constant practicing it before it was even close but...its getting there. This guy in the YT clip has it really sorted. You have to detune half a step to play in record key. We are lucky that our singer actually wanted it up a semi tone so i can play it in normal tuning.1 point
