ON HOLD For sale is a lovely 70's Ovation Magnum 1, in excellent condition. I've wanted one of these for years, having been a fan of Howard Devoto and Magazine in my youth and the brilliant, gurgling basslines of Barry Adamson. I finally found this one not long ago, but quickly came to the realisation that I'm not really Barry Adamson, Jah Wobble, Kim Gordon or Ross Vallory for that matter! So slightly grudgingly, I've decided to part with it. All fully functional (including the string mute) and even the case is in great nick for a 45+ year old bass. Unlike some examples of this bass that can weigh several tons, this one comes in at a very reasonable 4.5kg and sits on the knee or a strap beautifully. £1500 + UK shipping. Sorry, but I'm not looking for any trades.7 points

On a side issue , there is brilliant uptake in voting this month , while I am continually impressed with the entries to this little challenge , I also think that those taking an interest and the time to listen though and cast a vote, also deserve a mention , many thanks 👍5 points

A tentative for sale of my G&L SB-2 Tribute In Sonic Blue. This is a brilliant bass and unfortunately funds are tight otherwise i would be keeping it. I'll take some more pictures when i can. it has the powerful MFD pickups and no tone control. just two volume controls. Unfortunately i can't currently post as i don't have anyway of packing it safely so collection only. Thanks price now dropped to £320 NOW SOLD4 points

I have now fitted both transformers and made the connections for the mains and HT. The OT primaries are above the chassis at present as they will pass through at a different point.4 points

Yeah, I often think of AC coming home after a gig… ”Hard day at the office dear?” ’not in the least bit taxing love - really chilled, nice and easy’ ”Are we still filthy rich?” ’oh aye, increasingly so my little petal - INCREASINGLY…yurs.’ ”Brandy?” ’Why not…hehehehe’.4 points

Haha, the Guitarist thought I'd come in Vulfpeck fancy dress too. My chops obviously didn't get the memo though unfortunately!4 points

The information here's not correct. Fujigen Gakki only ever made 'Made In Japan' labelled instruments. When manufacture moved from Fujigen to Dyna Gakki & Tokai Gakki, 'Crafted In Japan' was introduced to differentiate them. Seemingly Fujigen retain exclusivity over the MIJ label and it has appeared on occasional post-'97 Fujigen-made production runs. The 'O' prefix & CIJ indicates it's post-'97 and from either Dyna or Tokai, but I don't think there's any way of distiguishing which of those factories built it. There's no quality differentiation between any of the factories used by Fender Japan.4 points

Lawks! I'm overcome with a rollercoaster of emotion, as that's the only way they are allowed these days. Though British/German stiff upper lip suits rather more! And a big cheers to all who voted - nice to see interest from more of the BC Massive... Especially those wot voted for me! 😃4 points

Doug Wimbish signature, custom order so only one of its kind. I had a DW sig about ten years ago and stupidly traded it in, big regrets... Good to be back in the saddle3 points

My (admittedly limited) experience of pub/band singers is the majority fall under the 'tuned shouting' description. And 'tuned' is not necessarily the same as 'in tune'. Too many think that singing is not a serious technical skill and you can just 'sing'. As with any instrument, there will be the odd person who can just wing it and get away with it - but not many. There's a lot of technique to singing properly to protect you voice and to enable you to sing for a protracted period without tiring or injury3 points

So, after 15 months of not playing a gig or anything, I have woken up to a message from my old function band saying they need me to dep on sat night. Think it's a wedding and think its relatively local. Hope the suit still fits after lockdown! Rehearsal tonight - set looks like all stuff I 'used to know' in a previous life, so a run through of 35 odd songs tonight. Keys shoudl be fine and hope the old grey matter kicks in with forms and arrangements, so just need to play some bass today and tomorrow! I literally haven't touched a bass since early December and haven't' played a gig in well over a year. Should be fun and I'm well looking fwd to it...... Only trouble is that I don't have a bass rig anymore, having sold it off due to covid and redundancy! Now need to make some "can I borrow your rig" calls to some pals!!3 points

Lemon Lard is a revolutionary product and is definitely needed by all players. It will revolutionise mid-gig snacking and fingerboard/string care. If Jaco had it he wouldn't have needed fried chicken. I can guarantee that if you use it you will be playing like Jaco in no time.* *actual results may vary3 points

SOLD - PLS REMOVE Custom bass built for me in late 2018. Aluminium body, top and rear body in carbon. Bolt on, 24 frets, custom radius 20 "(flat keyboard Ibanez / Yamaha mode), 18 mm string space at the bridge, 44.5 mm nut width, Hipshot Ultralight tuners. Alusonic Hybrid Alnico5/Neodymium MM + J pickup, 3-way selector for the bridge pickup, Ad Electronics Custom preamp with volume, blend, bass, mid and treble. Weight 3.9 kg. The changes to the basic version are: - flatter radius. - block inlays instead of simple dots. - 3-way preamp instead of 2. - 3-way selector instead of 5, which acts only on the bridge pickup in series / parallel / single coil mode. - blend on the preamp instead of the 5 pre-selected combinations. Instrument like new, with upgraded features compared to already excellent basic specifications. The reason for the sale is the fact that actually I do not play and I do not know when I will start playing again. I don't sell for economic needs, so I sell within a minimum margin that I reserve for each negotiation. Possible exchanges, but i prefer the sale, only on instruments such as Furlanetto fretboard not maple, or Status and similar. More info on www.alusonic.com3 points

So, I got this beauty from @Pinball of this parish. This was my second Ray and, as much as I enjoy them and could use their tone for a thing or two, they just are not for me. Considering that I now have to move all of my stuff to London and might be reasonably expected to get rid of a few earthly possessions in the process, I thought that this was as good a time as any to list it and have it go to a good home. I would really prefer for it to stay in the BC family. The bass is a 1998 (September 23rd, 1998) ceramic-equipped Musicman Stingray in Trans Red with a maple board. The bass is stunning, and has a few very small dings which I have tried to capture as well as possible—clearly, the instrument has been gigged, but I would say lovingly. The neck has some discolouration, which is to be expected, especially in a bass this age. I did, however, clean the fretboard following the process recommended by Ernie Ball and it is now looking quite a bit better. I also polished the frets with extra-fine steel wool, and the bass really plays great. I think I liked it better than my old HH, which had to alnico humbuckers. This, I think, sounds more balanced. Some photos available here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/M7u3Wh7DRZMLiGrt5 (I now notice I left a piece of tape attached to the pick up: that was to protect the pole pieces from attracting steel wool debris when polishing the frets, and it will of course be removed.) It will come with a hard case, which is extremely battered, but will do the job at least for the purposes of protecting the bass during transit. Which leads me to the topic of shipping, which is of course possible. In terms of trades, I regret to say that I am not really interested, unless you have an Ibanez EHB1005SMS (the short scale, multiscale version), in which case let's talk. Feedback below.2 points

True, but plenty of teachers want you to play the songs that they know - it’s happened to me a fair few times it makes me ask myself who’s paying the money here …2 points

Problem solved (hopefully!) - just bought an Orange Little Bass Thing from Oxford PMT. Nice punchy sound, and I especially like the parametric mid range control. Very straightforward panel, just volume, compression (yeah, I know…) bass mid and treble. Looking forward to giving it a good trying out at home tomorrow.2 points

When I was about 15 (late ‘70s) a friend played me a track on a tape he’d “borrowed” from his brother. I thought it was great; a ghost story song, which always floats my boat (see She Moves Through The Fair, Ghost Riders in the Sky etc). Unfortunately it didn’t say what it was, so I spent the next year or so unsuccessfully trying to track it down. We were both Prog fans so I assumed it was some previously unheard track by a Prog band. Imagine my surprise when about 2 decades later I walked into Woolworths and there was the album - Spanish Train and Other Stories, by yep, you guessed it, Chris De Burgh. I’ve seen Rush twice, including the first time when I was really into them in ‘81; both gigs were amongst the most disappointing I’ve been to. This was the first time I saw them. All I could hear all night was Geddy’s bass, although as he was playing his Rick at the time that was the best thing about the gig. 😉2 points

Same problem here. Singers? Dont get me started. I firmly believe that most of the wannabes in the semi pro world think singing is the easy part and all you need is a microphone, or not even that. Turn up at a rehearsal space and the PA and mic will be provided. The number of "Singers" we have auditioned who have no gear, not even a mic, no idea when to come in, no phrasing or dynamics, or indeed couldn't carry a song in a bucket is astonishing. All I hope for is the basics, have at least your own mic, learn the lyrics and sing in tune. You dont have to be Billie Holliday FFS.2 points

Yeppers, the SYB5 is years old, and the tracking isn't great - certainly not by today's standards. One thing that massively bugged me about the SYB-5 was that while it did the 'press to hold' function (really useful) it had a sweeping filter on the drone note, which I didn't want. I found the only way to get rid of that swooshing was to use a Behringer BSY600!2 points

Taking the hum out of them is kind of taking a small bit of their "mojo" IMO. Of course, some people hate that they hum, and I do have to wonder why Ric still make both of the pickup windings in the same direction, but, it is part of the character of the 4001/4003 that it does this. I do find that rolling off the volume for the neck pickup a touch makes this less of an issue, but I also think that putting humbuckers on them robs them of some of their character. Of course, it is horses for courses (or YMMV if you prefer).2 points

He was known to be fond of God's own county. Apparently, his party trick was to play with a ferret down his trousers. You can see evidence of it on the live clip of him playing What's Going On with Marvin Gaye. Note the way he keeps shifting from side to side in his seat as the little fella burrows about in his trollies.2 points
