  1. As you can see from the bobbly lines, I still have the final sanding of the neck to do and will finish off the volute at the same time - but this is pretty much where I want it to be in general terms: Not quite as butt-ugly as its creator

  4. I do understand some of the frustration about other events being affected by this, but at the same time I am astonished almost every year at the short-sightedness of various venues and organisations - have they never heard of the World Cup, the European Championships, the Olympics? As soon as I open my new diary for the following year, the first entries are the major sporting events that I really do not want to compete with. I won't accept evening gigs if they're scheduled against, say, the Champions League final, or afternoon gigs if they're up against the British GP at Silverstone or the Men's Singles Final at Wimbledon. I mean, come on guys, this is hardly rocket science.

  6. I only went in for a strap for a new bass, an Ibanez SR100B-NT (that has yet to be delivered) and ended up walking out with a 5-er, an Ibanez SR1405E-GWH.

  9. probably just me, but producers messing about with the drum sound seems to age records, in the 80's it was the fashion to have enormous sounding snare drums high in the mix, sounds awful to me, now it seems to be clicky sounding kick drums, why can't they just record the drums how they're supposed to sound? some albums sound good because they do sound dated (mainly because they're recorded almost live) Elvis's sun sessions and the Beatles Please Please Me (mono) spring to mind

  13. Another one off the list - and one of my least favourite ones. Fitting the tuners. And fitting tuners shouldn't be as fiddly as it often seems to be. Also - a bit of a repetitive gripe - hmmm, I do like Schaller but... They make some REALLY nice products Their customer service, in my experience, is FIRST CLASS BUT they often don't seem to check how difficult it is to fit their own products. And they often don't provide the basics to allow the fitting to be done successfully and/or easily. The worst case of this was this piezo Hannes bridge. Flagship product. Total nightmare to fit. And I pretty much know what I'm doing! And I've got lots of standard and obscure tools. And I still needed to buy another specialist drill bit. Yes - a drill bit!!!! : Looks nice. Until you see the back: ..and then read the instructions of how to bolt it, and the instructions of how to string it, and the complete lack of any reference, whatsoever, of what you do with all the piezo wires and collector block - important in the context of the 10 or so precision drill holes (tenth mm precise at the guitar top and tenth mm precise at the guitar back after drilling through 30mm of wood or, trust me, it isn't going to fit) you've already drilled perilously close to each other and very perilously close to where the piezo wires are going to have to be. Anyway...I've taken a few more pills and calmed down a bit. And compared with a Hannes bridge, fitting a Schaller pegged tuner is, I suppose, a doddle. But is it asking too much - and surely it wouldn't be too much trouble - to pop a little piece of paper in the box with a full size drawing of the centres of the bush and two pegs to use as a template? Anyway, for what it's worth, this is what I do nowadays with pegged tuners if I don't have a template or the exact dimensional drawing to hand (and trust me - you can't measure the actual item accurately enough): I drill a hole for the bush in a thin piece of hardwood. I pop a drop of paint, or snowpake or wet sharpie ink on the pegs, pop the bush on, tighten until the pegs touch : I drill the peg holes on a drill press to ensure they are vertical and test fit the tuner. I then use this, with a bush pressed through the template and headstock hole, as the drill guide: Then, if everything is flat, square and vertical, the tuners should fit without having to 'ease' out the peg holes at all: Anyway, that's how I do it. And maybe it's just me that finds pegged tuners a PITA... Next job is carving that slightly ugly volute

  14. Unless you were really going for that brittle, crunchy sound. Who needs pedals? Just chuck a glass guitar down the stairs (with the guitarist if you want to flesh out that tone with some warmer notes).

  15. Guns n Roses Use your Illusions 1 and 2 Its all the Honky Tonk Piano Axl added. It has really dated those albums. Also Metallica justice for all that guitar sound with no bass, a lot of bands came after copying that awful caterwauling whiny guitar sound, just pitiful.

  16. Been there. Wandered into Sound Control Preston years ago whilst visiting a girlfriend, because I was bored and had nothing better to do. Ended up buying a Spector Reboot DLX - a truly stunning bass. It was so good I then sold my Status Stealth I 6 string.

  17. Not anything to do with the thread at all, but just a bit of info' - the 80's JBS (PJ-555) actually had a jazz neck. However the one that Duff McKagan ended up with as his career exploded interestingly had a Precision profile neck. It was this bass that lent it's specifications to the currently available MiM Duff McKagan Jazz Bass Special. I agree that this is way more of a Precision Bass Special.. or, you know.. a standard PJ without a pick guard lol...

  19. The cab that won the Essex cab shootout was a Bergantino with two Faital Pro PR300 drivers in it. Same as the Genz nxt Ebeneezer mentioned. So I'd expect it to sound very similar. £300 is a good deal. At the bash the votes (out of 25 in total) were: Bergantino CN212 - 9 Schroeder 212 - 8 EAD 2x12 - 5 (no longer manufactured) EBS Neo 212 - 2 Barefaced Super12T - 1

  20. For sale is a lovely fretless Precision, bought from Greg/Shaggy on this forum, a purveyor of fine basses and a man who has helped me part with a lot of cash over the years! Body is unknown but is Oly White over 3tsb and is a very very authentic looking relic., PUPs I think are Fender USA '62 RIs (I'll check), neck is Fender USA with original tuners. Very solid Precision tone, lovely playable neck with stunning rosewood lined board. IIRC I paid around £500, offers in that region welcome. As is always the case with my basses, you don;t like it, you can return it These are Greg's pictures, I'll upload some more tomorrow Chris EDIT: PUPs are Lollars not Fender

  21. Hi guys, This might seem crazy, but after waiting for 19 months I received my new Wal Mk3 and I'll have to sell it cause I need the money for a big investment. The bass is BRAND NEW! It features bird's eye maple facings, mahogany core, rosewood fingerboard, maple-mahogany 5 piece neck, black Schaller tuners, D-tuner, and a special input to allow angled jacks. It's super light and it's perfectly balanced. And the sound... well, you guys know, it's a Wal 🙂 The Mk3 compared to the Mk2 and Mk1 models is more ergonomic, lighter and better balanced. It's a great opportunity to get a new Wal without waiting for almost two years and with a generous price cut. The bass is in Barcelona but I can ship it anywhere in Europe, PM me with your location for a delivery quote. It comes with a Wal hardcase and tools. Price: 5200 EUR. NO TRADES thanks!

  22. For those of you like myself that like German instruments, i found ebay kleinanzeigen to be fertile hunting ground for Warwicks, Sandbergs and other boutique instruments such as Human Base for example. Technically its a classified ads page but if you ask a lot of sellers are more than willing to ship. Prices are very competitive.

  26. I think the RCF HD32-A is at that size/price point too from memory. That's what I'd have gone for if the K10.2 wasn't so tiny, although i am getting sick of explaining to people where my amp is.

  27. For many years when I heard people talking about Donald Fagan I genuinely thought they were referring to this guy. I just assumed that he had a vast back catalogue of stuff that I'd never heard. it's only quite recently that I realised my error.

  28. I've been asked about the tone of this bass several times. It has the closest tone to my original 62 of all the jazz basses I've had, with a bit more general output. I found a short video I made some time ago. Back then I had installed an old stacked control plate and a tort guard, but it's the same bass and it sounds identical with the current VVT controls. My fretless skills are very limited and this is recorded with a cheapo mobile phone. Even so you can hear the great tone of these pickups and woods combination. If I recall correctly, the pickup blend used in the video is mostly bridge with a bit of neck. The bass sounds legendary in any pickup combination in my opinion. TRIM_20180630_230807.mp4

  31. Just added a batch of 30 new bass transcriptions to my website. Now 575 bass charts on there - and all free - so reading bass players, help yourselves with my compliments (and please share!) The recent surge is as a result of my own prep for various gigs (Motown, Frankie Valli, Robbie Williams etc) and customers who have taken advantage of my half price offer - if they allow me to publish the transcription I've done for them on the site. It seems everyone is happy to save themselves a few quid and help out their fellow bass players! There has been a slight price increase for the transcriptions made-to-order which had been frozen at the introductory level for three years. However, the price is now inclusive of currency conversion charges and other PayPal fees. The main library of 575 bass transcriptions, remains completely and utterly free though, of course. 32. I've got a 5 string Dragonfly Fat J5 handmade japanese jazz bass. It was a similar price to your Bacchus. I imported it directly from Japan. It is solid Alder, matt finish with black scratchplate. 5 piece maple/walnut nech, flamed maple finger board, Gotoh hardware right through. It's set up really well, and tonally, it's all there, (active/passive, 3 band EQ, mid sweep.) If you follow this link This is the actual bass that I now own.

  33. I'll let you know when I've finished but I can't see how putting one extra string will make that much if a difference to neck stability My Ibby 5 string has a 45mm nut (which is 3mm wider than my P) and the heel is 75mm (which is 11mn wider than the P) the neck thickness are the same and both have a single truss rod

  34. I remember a run of TB2000s were done early 2000s, went up on eBay and sold for ridiculously low prices. I've upped the images I pulled from eBay at the time (amazingly sixteen years ago today): The EGC2000 is a close approximation/reinterpretation of the later model/redesign TB2000 (wide wings; the early TB2000s had narrower body shapes), albeit with a slotted EGC headstock. 35. I'm rather fond of Gabriel-era Genesis, but I know what you mean...something about albums like Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme does sound very much "of the '70s." Maybe "twee" is the right word; I think it's that aspect which some of their contemporaries (e.g., Pink Floyd and Camel) managed to steer clear of, and they seem to have aged better! There's definitely a thing about "British production" as well - Genesis suffered from it, and I think the first two Who albums do as well. Almost as if they couldn't let go of the "stick the band in a room and put some mics up" approach. I think the finest example is probably the Moody Blues' Go Now, which sounds like it was recorded in a biscuit tin! Compare it to the much crisper sounds American bands like The Byrds and The Doors were getting at the same time, and you have to wonder what combination of the technology and the know-how some British producers were oblivious to...

  37. + 1 for the Whitesnake comment . For a brief moment when I was young I liked Deep Purple's Burn and bought Whitesnake's debut on the strength of it. Shouldn't have bothered. It's all been downhill from there though as far as worst bands ever they're up there but there are worse such as Kiss, RHCP, Journey, Boston, Kansas, REO you get my drift

  40. And another one off the list. And I remembered that it's best to install the luminlay dots before the final sanding of the neck! Some folks make their own, but with the material coming in stick form, it is SO easy to install: ...and looks SO good once it has been, especially the black bound version. Makes great daylight and low light visibility even if you don't charge them up for the glow:

  42. I've recently fitted the 'C' neck from my Roger Waters sig (which is by far the comfiest neck I've ever played) onto my Blacktop Jazz, but then that has two P pickups on it so I'm not sure where i fit in this thread 😳. I'm now on the hunt for another neck from a Waters bass to fit back on my Waters bass, if you see what I mean.

  43. I have two jazz basses with Precision necks, both sound and play better than any others I've owned. Big necks make a difference to the sound and playability for me. Fretless below, no pics of the fretted I'm afraid but will take some and post later

  44. I like Muse - brilliant drumming, bass work and guitars - but I think Matt gets lost in the 'I am a polymath, I must add more keys and noise to this' - and it gets a bit like the last days of Queen - pompous for the sake of it. They do have some killer tracks though - you can't deny their technical craft, they just get a bit OTT with it. I suppose it's the split between making what they want and what the fans want - a similar problem Dream Theater have had.

I got a response about a feature request I sent to that address. Failing that, it might be worth contacting someone like Adam or Amos directly (usually first name in front of the @moogmusic.com).
