  1. My acoustic short scale fretless bass. My goal was to build an acoustic that was as loud as possible without amplification. I failed. It isn't loud (enough). But I do enjoy playing it once in a while.

  4. Hi Basschat, The reason i purchased this bit of kit was through Janek Gwizdala who highly recommended it on one of his youtube VLOG's, have started filming a few live gigs with it, and the video and sound quality is actually great! Anyone else been using the Hero 5 Session?

  6. I'm sure I remember Doug confirming this exact thinking in his podcast interview with SBL. This topic (the original post mainly) basically highlights some peoples lack of understanding of what is sometimes necessary for full-time musicians to undertake, basically to monetise whatever you possibly can. Clearly there is a 'market' for his more esoteric solo performing, at trade shows, clinics etc etc, but as has been mentioned above, it probably represents a tiny percentage of the bass playing he undertakes daily. He's good at it, people will clearly pay him to do it, why wouldn't he play like that. In any case, the whole 'bass should stay in the low end' is the most boring, yet constantly visited, rhetoric going. These people are musicians, that they choose the bass guitar to represent their voice is a moot point. Those players will likely stick to a 'role' for a lot of their musical life, but who cares if they diverge if it's an enjoyable experience for them or someone else?! Si

  8. Purely personal and for very different reasons... Blues Brothers Soundtrack. Complete Madness - Madness. Hejira - Joni Mitchell. Mad Season - Mad Season. Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy. Live After Death - Iron Maiden.

  9. I loved the JJ Burnel sound, and his bass on the Stranglers first album "Rattus Norvegicus" was what first made me listen to the bass guitar So that's my contribution - not necessarily my fave album these days, but it's what got me into bass

  11. Hi, I stumbled upon an amazing Jamerson bass break on the 1968 Marvin Gaye track โ€˜At Last (I Found A Love)โ€™ and decided to look at it in closer detail on my Jamerson Analysed blog. Full transcription, breakdown of the line and video available at http://www.jamersonanalysed.co.uk/2017/12/at-last-i-found-love-marvin-gaye-1968.html Enjoy! Chris

  12. Hi all, It's been a while but I have finished another analysis of Jamerson's playing. This time I have looked at his bass break from Marvin Gaye's 'At Last (I Found A Love). The full article featuring my analysis, full transcription and cover video can be found here - Jamerson Analysed Or, if you just want to watch the video, you can do here - At Last (I Found A Love) Enjoy! Chris.

  14. Ooh, very nice. One of Stefanโ€™s newer versions with CTS bridge and regular tuners. As the owner of 3 basses built by Stefan Hess I can vouch how good they are. Good luck with the sale.

  15. Having built one I wouldn't attempt it without the pre-drilled enclosure. Not the easiest build with stacking PCBs, and it confirmed to me that I'm REALLY picky about compression (PWNZOR being the only one I've really liked that I've owned - carl martin optical thingy was ok). Sold it to @Gareth Hughes of this parish who likes it muchly - more than his original dbx.

  16. Best thing about that bass was the bridge! Bad bass, good bridge! Way better than needed on these Satellites... (Picture makes the bridge look chrome but it was/is brass!) Suits both string-through-body and normal string basses I believe.

  22. I think the bit and sample knowns are mislabeled, big knob is samplerate, small is bits. And mooer is definitely acts quite differently depending on what you put into I compared to the Frantabit.

  24. Cellos are intended to be played with a bow at first and every bowed instrument is made that way. A flat table instrument used with a bow will create so much low end vibration that the table would explode or at the best deglue. It's the same for double bass which was originally intended to be played bowed as all the quatuor instruments as they are called. Now you've got the explanationfor the archtop construction.

  25. The mooer arrived this morning - Iโ€™ve had the briefest of plays with it, at the end of the signal chain - which includes the Future Attack and the Poly Mod Pro in front, with the FCB doing midi control on synth mix on the FI and frequency on the PolyMod Pro with a basic envelope follower on. After the tinkering, I can report that; 1. The switch to select instruments is best left at โ€œguitarโ€ - itโ€™s just a filter and extracts all treble on the bass setting, with the synth being somewhere in the middle. 2. The synth sound I was using definitely worked best with a fairly narrow range on the โ€œbitโ€ dial - but the sounds are exactly what I was looking for, excellent 3. The way the tone reacts to the expression pedals for both the FI synth mix and frequency on the PolyMod is AMAZING!!! Iโ€™ll try to post some video later - but it looks like this was well worth doing. Iโ€™ve actually got another Boss EV-5 for the PolyMod Pro as the expression pedal input has a lot more scope (LFO speed, and more) than the MIDI mappable continuous controllers. Thereโ€™s like 13 mapping for expression, onto a huge range of different parameters in the filter. I started my pedalboard after years of using a Podxt (which I do still use) because I had a Boss SYB-5 and the OC-2 octaver lying around for years, and wanted to use them again. The journey to this point has been a revelation - so much tweakability; and some patch-based capability too, which I really do like in an effects rig.

  29. Nice work! I have a Mooer Tender Octaver which is essentially a tiny MicroPOG clone, I love playing fake guitar through it. If you want to go FULL fat though, get the HOG2 with the additional preset and expression pedals. You can have a preset that adds a 5th up, use the filter as a wah, drone a background note or chord, all kinds of crazy stuff!

  31. For me, master of puppets. The playbook on thrash bass, and fuzz tones. The next step from geezer IMO blood sugar sex magik. Consistently great work- some totally leftfield, but consistently tuneful and influential number of the beast. Steve really hits his stride here, the tunes are mostly written on bass and it shows ๐Ÿ˜‰ Control denied. Steve digiorgio really pushing the envelope on fretless playing in an extreme style. Death jazz if you will ๐Ÿ˜‰ Blues brothers ost. A superb intro to duck Dunns playing. Just beautiful. Any of the Oscar Peterson albums with Ray brown on bass. Sublime Who's next. Great arrangements and mind blowing playing

  33. Why would that happen? Does anyone rummage around behind your cab during the set? If that's the case get the speakons! I spent some 30 years touring and gigging with 1/4" plugs and never had a problem. I never saw anyone else have a problem in that time, either. That's why I don't accept that these things are inherently not fit for purpose. Don't use the wrong leads, and don't unplug the amp during the set and you won't have a problem. Do any of those things and it's not the plugs fault!! These days the bigger Ampeg amps do have speakons. They also still provide 1/4" sockets and their owner's manuals recommend using the speakons at "high output power levels". Why they still provide 1/4" sockets I don't know but for those guys to provide them, I guess they are expecting us to use them, and without breaking the gear when we do!

  41. I'm 49 and just about to start playing. If I thought I'd be giving up by 60 I don't think I'd bother. Age is just a number and it really depends on what you can manage - plenty of much younger folk wouldn't be able to play any instrument through poor health/mobility/flexibility. I'd have thought that playing 6 strings is a good indication that you can do it. A bit more practice and you'll get there. As I say, I'm a bit younger, but I'm finding the physicality needed is a surprise but with time it'll ease. I may need to change my bass as I do have lower back problems and the T-bird is a bit heavy and awkwardly shaped (nose dive anybody?).

  44. Even at the local level it's important. Ever bring a guy into a band and you notice after the 1st couple of gigs he only packs up his own gear and leaves. Not cool. Off topic: Pick of me in 1969 playing my Gibson EB-3. Nobody can tell me I'm not "hood" ๐Ÿ˜‚ Blue

  45. Just to be argumentative, I don't think neck construction, neck joint, bridge construction and/or attachment or tuners make any difference to how a bass sounds either, but that's just my opinion of course. When I swap out stock tuners for Hipshot Ultralites there is no difference in 'tone' and they are very different, engineering-wise. In my view its strings, pickups and the position of the pickups that make the difference. Most basses sound a lot like... basses.
