New basses week! Not had a self indulgent bragging moment for a while 😀 Marus Elwood Jazz landed last week - simply brilliant, lightweight, warm sounding with nice slap tone…perfect! 96 Teal Stingray, arrived today - feel like a dog with 2 doodahs! 8.5lb weight, low action, pure funk machine, just total perfection! Bravewood Jazz not Fender Up for sale is a Bravewood Jazz bass built to order in 2012 to replicate a Fender 1963 Sonic blue jazz bass, had it survived the rigors of gigging until today. I bought this from Owen in a rush of GAS last year and used it on one gig and one recording, I have added a Fender rear ashtray. Ebony board in great shape with bone nut and comes wound with Flats. The bass has a really great hue with a green tinge to the sonic blue finish. it comes in a hiscox case with original commission bill of sale. Collection preferred. Nope. Sorry. Bass solos do nothing for me whatsoever. Although I can totally see why some people would like it. For me the bass is just a part of a story, and the lead voice in any story is the vocal. Controversially (and probably the most unpopular opinion on here so far) I have very little interest in the bass guitar as an instrument, except in the overall context of a band. I don't listen to music for the bass, and very rarely pick bass lines out as a discerning factor. It's all about how the band works as a whole. I have absolutely no time for showboating bassists, no matter how talented. For me the bass is a supporting instrument. It's the backbone of the band. As soon as it starts to take a lead role I lose interest pretty quickly.6 points

Played at a Bournemouth retirement complex- a first for me - and delighted to find that musical appreciation doesn’t fade with age. The Otis Jay Blues Band enjoyed celebrating the jubilee with like minded folk … I reckon we will be back!5 points

A few of my long standing favourite artists have put out albums that I really like in the last few years (The Black Keys "Let it Rock" is one I remember), but Jack White has released probably my fave Album from any of his bands this year with "Fear of the Dawn". I love it in the same way I did Icky Thump, it's sort of got all these hard edges but on really groovy songs. I know, but it makes sense to me. I've been looking around for new things and then someone I've been into for years has come up with what I think is a great album - love it. It's not often that happens, where someone's 10th or more (must be more, 12th ish studio album?) is among the best. I know it won't be everyone's cup of tea, and obviously if you don't like it that's fine you're crazy, it's amazing! 😜4 points

Last Price Drop to £2200 Before I pull it This lovely 1975 Fender P in lovely condition and all original, even the foam mute under the bridge plate has not perished Minimal fret wear, some light scratches across the fretboard which may have been caused with the previous owner cleaning against the grain but it barely noticeable Nut width is a very comfortable 38.9 mm Jazz like shape Weight is 4.4 kgs which just registered before the battery on the scales died so I will have to weigh it again, it feels a nice weight to me Nice birds eye to the back of the neck, tuners in great shape and the varnish on the headstock is starting to craze which is normal for these era basses, my 72 is the same All chrome is in great condition with no pitting, was kept hidden away for a good few years hence the condition Currently sporting flats, the neck date stamp puts it at 1974, the last digit is a 4 which I didn't capture on the phone. Pickups dated 1975 and post are also dated I have a moulded case which I will add for the journey to its new owner, price will include postage to UK addresses If I have left anything out then please comment, thanks for looking guys3 points -

I bought a 5 string version a few months ago and, impressed by the fiver, I Thought I would get the 4 string version. I've been after an active PJ, with a J pup at the bridge just as usable on its own as the P pup. @Old Horse Murphy suggested one of these Charvels and I've followed his advice3 points

Outside in a sunny packed Pub Beer garden this afternoon in Dorset, next to the BBQ which was pretty galling as we were asked to announce the food was closing half way through our second set. Cheeky gets, I managed to prise a round of drinks off them before we started but they didn't even ask if we wanted feeding. Talk about hiding in plain sight! Gig went well and we've managed to get our singer to embrace a Telecaster rather than her acoustic, next we'll have her standing up rather than sitting on a stool like in a folk club..... Moving on we have 2 gigs this Sunday, one a Vintage Festival, then another Festival on the 11th and 12th too! Look forward to the Festivals as usually get good sound, both in monitors and the PA. In deference to the Jubilee I brought out my 50 year old Telecaster Bass today, but think I'll travel lighter at the weekend with the Acinonyx3 points

I have never considered designing a stringed instrument before. The most advanced thing I've attempted to date was 3D printing ... a kazoo! 🤣 In my mind's eye I can almost picture how Flo will look; I can imagine how she will feel to hold. My mind's ear is not so clear, simply want Flo to sound lovely and thuddy, no nasty buzzing or other artefacts; It is her basic sound that I'm thinking about as I imagine I can affect this quite a bit by my technique and a good signal chain. I'm going to be documenting my musings, things I've found, ideas etc here; partly 'for the record', partly so that others may find something of interest ... but a large part of it is to expose the design to the BC gang who have "been there & done that" and will hopefully point out any gaffs ... before I make them. So ... if you spot something that is not quite right, please pitch in! S'manth x3 points

I decided to string my only P bass with flats a couple of months ago, and bought a MiM P to play with rounds on. That lasted less than one day before it too was strung with flats. I then bought another P bass (50s classic series) and changed that to flats almost as soon as I had my hands on it. Same story with my Jazz basses, strung one with flats and bought another to use with rounds….both have flats on now!3 points

I think the big thing while studying was to get tools to my tool box. I do not be able to play Jeff Berlin's solos @200 bpm, but I can transcribe and understand some of the theoretical background. My sight-reading could always be even better, but I use scores and understand chords and progressions. I actually find tabs harder to read than scores.3 points

I remember we played at a party once and during one number a boy from our work got up to dance. He had a very peculiar style of dancing which had everyone, including us in stitches. I realised by his face that he wasn't putting it on as he looked quite embarrassed but didn't stop as his partner would have been left on the dance floor alone. I though good on ya. You are enjoying yourself and making a fool of yourself but kept going. We need more people like that at gigs.3 points

As long as you don’t impoverish yourself or your family where’s the harm? Look how much some people spend on gym membership a month, or go out drinking every weekend, or smoking, or £400 a month just to have a new plate car or a million other things. Anything that enriches your life is a plus, if that thing can be sold for the same money or thereabouts if you get bored of it is a bonus.3 points

Sales of ongoing models pay for the R&D costs of new products. Perhaps after say 20 years it could become public domain, that would offer some protection? It doesn’t change the fact that it doesn’t really belong to them, it a justification of a behavior.3 points

Up for grabs my stupendous Ampeg SVT CL. It’s the 90’s USA version and has just been serviced by Dave Coates Audio and had a full set of brand new valves installed. It’s in excellent, well gigged condition and comes with a flight case too. Shipping will be £60 using my man with a van to ensure safe passing of this behemoth or I don’t mind a car park meet up, I travel around a fair bit! SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD Pics Bought 2 years ago from this very marketplace. Now moving on as not getting played. Super cool jazz bass from Leo Fender's other company. I've not taken the neck off it to look at the date stamps, but the serial number is on the neck plate which indicates 1983 at the earliest. Internet research suggests they were only made from 1982-84 with the maple fretboard. In great working condition with cosmetic wear appropriate to a nearly 40 year old instrument. Dings, chips, pick swirls, you name it, it's no case queen. I bet Leo himself breathed the thin nitro coating on to it. I've tried to show some of the knocks as best I could in the photographs. However, it sounds amazing with the super cool MFD pickups in usual arrangement with tone and vol. Comes in the basic Gator hardcase as shown. Beautiful Metallic red with matching headstock. Nordstrand 4.2 Pickup. 3 band EQ Maple on Maple with some light flame in the maple Hipshot d-tuner Beautiful all round conditiion, a few small dints in keeping with a 22 year old bass. No buckle rash. Full Musiocman flightcase Truss rod adjusts nicely. Choice of scratchplates available (currently sport a mirror plate with red carbon wrap cover.). Pics show a couple of options. Cash is king, although part trades with cash my way 'might' work, especially if its a clean USA SUB5. More pics available.. All the usuals, money has to be secured before the bass leaves me (forget it if you think the courier scam is going to work). My feeling is that investment potential is the only rational reason for paying through the nose for a vintage Fender. Mojo aside, I think modern repros offer much better value for money as playing instruments. Just my opinion, don't shoot me...😃2 points

No, it's not your standard P bass neck. More like a Jazz neck. The neck really is lovely to play, its slim, fast, has a lovely colour and the fretboard edges are rolled off so it really feels nice in your hand. The bass isn't a P bass with a J pup added, it is more of a hybrid: P body, J neck, Both P and J pups (though the P is reversed). With the active controls the J pup can do way more than just adding a bit of treble to the P pup. So far, for home practice, I like the P pup soloed in passive and the J pup soloed with a 50% boost to the mids. I don't think I'll use the pups blended. One of the bands I'm in does mainly punk stuff. I'm going to try the p pup soloed for pick stuff and the J pup soloed for fingers.2 points

Hmm, Tuff Cab is water based, and smells like an acrylic emulsion. I wonder if it would take the pigments they use to colourise emulsion paints. Out local shop will have a go at colourising pretty much anything. I wonder if you got a lighter blue or grey you could get near the colour you want by getting someone to add in more pigment. Obviously that risks wasting a can of paint. The base paint they use for dark emulsions are the same colours as the grey undercoats you use for for dark paint. I tend not to get to specific with that particular line of thought. There is a lot of variation in the wood within the same species. So the way I look it is as an overall structure which you can manipulate to a degree in order to get into a general ballpark. So I have an idea of what a combination of woods as a structure will produce but again it is a general idea.2 points
