  3. Well folks, this is it. Young @BreadBin met me in a car park on the outskirts of Frome and I got my hands on that upon which many other hands have alighted. A thousand thanks to all those who took part, including those who I was unable to fit into the scheme, it was truly a remarkable effort. Not the farthest a bass has been delivered in this way, but I have my eye on one in Scotland so any record holders out there - beware!

  6. Yamaha BBP34 in Midnight Blue bought new (not by me) from Kennys’ Music in June 2019. It's in excellent condition as is the original and rather hefty hard case. Original pack of tools are included. It weighs about 9.7lbs and the action is currently set extremely low. I've cut and paste a full description from the web below. I'm selling it because I've got used to the wider, flatter neck profile on my BB1100s and simply haven't taken to this neck which is slimmer and more jazz-like. This is an extraordinary instrument and hopefully someone will play it to its full capability. I'd prefer pick up obviously, but will courier at buyer's expense. Thanks for looking. YAMAHA BBP34 MIDNIGHT BLUE PRO SERIES MADE IN JAPAN The Yamaha BBP34 is designed for the bass player that won't settle for anything but the best. The Pro Series BB's represent the pinnacle of everything the BB designers have sought to achieve over four decades of striving for perfection. Carefully crafted one at a time by a select team of master artisans at Yamaha's headquarters in Japan, and featuring a unique Alder/Maple/Alder laminated construction finished with Yamaha's proprietary IRA (initial response acceleration) technology, the Pro BB offers a rich, organic tone and incomparable resonance and playability—this is the bass that you've always dreamed off. Alder/Maple/Alder Body Construction The new Yamaha BBP34 features an Alder/Maple/Alder multi-laminated body construction. The hard maple center increases body stiffness and accentuates midrange to cut through the mix of a band, and allows a more uniform transmission of vibrations between the body and the maple neck for unparalleled resonance and sustain. 6-bolt Miter Neck Joint Miter bolting holds the neck closer and tighter to the body fusing these two separate components into one. Compared to a conventional bolt-on joint, miter bolting offers more efficient transfer of string vibration throughout the body, for improved sustain and outstanding resonance that brings every note to life. YGD (Yamaha Guitar Development) Custom V7 Pickups Alnico magnets produce a fat yet penetrating tone that works in combination with the unique Alder/Maple/Alder construction of the 700 and Pro models for an organic, well-defined sound. The new BB models are equipped with one tone control and two volume control knobs, for versatile sound shaping. Convertible Bridge and Saddle for Precise Tone Shaping: Vintage Plus Bridge The Yamaha BBP 34 Pro is equipped with the Vintage Plus Bridge, which incorporates “Diagonal Body Thru Stringing,” where strings are angled at the saddle and pass through the instrument to the bridge at a 45º angle, as opposed to the traditional vertical stringing method which places more stress on the strings. Diagonal Body Thru Stringing significantly reduces this stress while transferring string vibration to the body reliably and efficiently. Strings can also be set to the tail end of the bridge, which comes equipped with a convertible saddle that can be adjusted to 2 different angles for more precise tonal shaping and feel. The rounder side of the saddle gives a slightly softer sound, while the more angled area produces a slightly tighter one. The brass saddle of the Vintage Plus Bridge delivers a slightly deeper low-end, and the steel bridge plate offers a brighter tone. All screws and springs are made of stainless steel to guard against corrosion. Five-piece Neck with new shape The new series features a 5-ply maple and mahogany laminated neck, in a bolt-on design that delivers a sharp attack, and quick response. This durable construction resists warping and twisting and adds the tight, penetrating character of maple combined with the warmth of mahogany to the instrument’s tone. The New BB models feature a slightly thinner neck than previous BB basses, improving playability and feel for both modern and traditional players. Lightweight Tuners Lighter weight tuners offer a better balance and complement the overall feel, providing a perfect match for the smaller, lighter body of the new BB. I.R.A. (Initial Response Acceleration) Any bass benefits from being "played in," a process in which the instrument matures and opens up as the stresses between the wood and finish, neck and fingerboard, and body and hardware are released, resulting in better sound and playability. Yamaha’s exclusive Initial Response Acceleration (IRA) technology releases those stresses by applying specific vibrations to the completed instruments as part of the crafting process and gives a "played in" bass from day one. The Yamaha BBP34 Pro Series Made in Japan, this is the ultimate BB, featuring an Alder/Maple/Alder construction treated with Yamaha’s unique IRA technology, a six-bolt miter neck joint, and a diagonally strung convertible bridge. 8. Up for sale is my Fender Japan Jazz Bass Special which I actually imported from Japan myself as I couldn't find one here! It's one of the coveted first run E series (1984-1987) with the all black neck and Hot Rod larger pole PJ pickups which sound amazing! It's a low number E series so I think it's possibly a 1985. It is all original, even down to the pots and switches and even has all 3 of it's original 'F' knobs present and complete (they are pretty much impossible to find and are pricey when they do show up) I suppose I have to mention the ubiquitous Duff McKagan of Guns and Roses connection - he used exactly the same bass throughout the GnR years... Which I knew nothing about until I started shopping for one! I was initially inspired to get one because Zia Geelani of Ozric Tentacles played one to GREAT effect. It really is a fabulous bass, the neck is Jazz width at the nut (which is graphite) and super solid and straight, the nicest Fender neck I've played, and the truss rod works perfectly with plenty of adjustment in either direction. The electronics are Volume/volume/TBX tone control (goes brighter and also deeper than a normal passive tone - every bit of it usable) and also a pickup selector switch which between them all adds up to incredible versatility for a passive bass. It's pretty lightweight weighing in at 8.7lbs and balances perfectly. It does have some dinks and bumps here and there and has been touched up near the input jack where it looks like it was dropped at some point in it's life. Purely cosmetic as it doesn't affect the playability in any way - Genuine road worn mojo! It is a 35 year old bass after all. Currently set up with a nice low action with a set of virtually new DR Hi Beams 100-40. Another nice touch is the head stock decal, which in fact isn't really a decal.. They were actually silk-screen printed on then lacquered over! Quality. The whole bass is pure class and feels it. I will miss it dearly and already plan to get another when my finances pick up again. I'm just looking to get back what it cost me which is £680. I will post it safely if required at the buyers expense. Thanks for looking.

So up next will be a modern 5 string. - 35” scale - 24 frets (may opt for 21) - 2 active EMG MM pups - passive EQ VVT (may put in a preamp) - Black hardware - 18mm string spacing (single string bridge) at bridge - brass nut (10mm spacing) 50mm wide - swamp ash body with a tbd top (walnut likely) - maple neck, bolt-on - wenge fretboard (most likely) - I quite like scalloped headstocks, so will probably go with that Will be doing a full-size drawing in the next weeks..... old school style

  13. PJ bass with versatile 3 band EQ, including semi-para mids. Bought new from Andertons in Mar 2020, just as lockdown came into force (!) - so has only seen very light home use and is in "nearly new" condition. Almost £100 / 20% discount off the list price - so I hope this has been priced fairly / competitively. Weight: 4.4kg / 9.7lbs Spec attached Collection from E London would be ideal or happy to meet half way within a 50 mile radius; but I can consider couriering (P&P extra) if this is the only option. PS not looking for any trades on this one - thanks for looking!

  19. This chap isn't a drummer, he's a musician who drums 😁 Sadly, most drummers I seem to have the (dis)pleasure of playing with don't appear to understand that as well as keeping time, a good drummer should supply a groove that adds to and supplements the music, rather than just bashing a cymbal as hard as they can on every beat with a fill on every single drum at least every 4 bars... So if anyone knows a rockin' jazzydrummer looking for a progressive-punk-funk band please give them my details! At present I'm quite enjoying Mr EZ who resides in my phone...

  22. I was a young kid, in the times before internet (but just after dinosaurs were extinct so we never overlapped) and the only way I had to find out about various bands out there was listening to the radio (very few dedicated rock shows), and sharing among friends... and sometimes just taking a punt on something. I was at the local record store looking for I can't remember what, which they didn't have, and I could not go home empty-handed. I knew of Michael Schenker and was curious... but the MSG section was empty. Then I remembered UFO. They had only Force It (1975) and Strangers in the night (1979). I bought Force It because it was cheaper. Getting home, putting the album on... Let it roll starts... and I was hooked before we got to the first solo. I wore out that album. Then I bought Strangers in the night, and I was a UFO fan ever since. I don't listen to them a lot these days, but they're always going to be up there for me. True no nonsense rock and roll band.

  24. Beware when mixing a P with a J as the P has almost twice the output of a standard J. Furthermore, good sounding fiver P are not the easiest to find. The 18 mm strings spacing at the bridge is indeed the standard for a fiver. Forget the Big Splits as just as you noticed they sound hollow and very American, meaning mid scooped. If you want to have an "authentic" sounding P/J fiver go for the standard : a single coil J at the bridge slightly overwound and a humbucking parallel wired P. I would look by Aguilar if you want to stay in, again, "authentic" sounding pickups as it's what they really do : copies of the originals. I love the Nordstrand pure single coils, but not the rest of their range. You could try Häussel in Germany, they make outstanding pricey pickups. You can also ask Christoph Dolf from BassCulture in Germany to make you a perfectly matched set with whatever cover you like. His stacked pickups are certainly the best ones I've ever heard and terrific sounding stacked J's. He works alone and as a full custom shop at ultra decent prices (around 250 Euros for a set delivered to your door in about 2 weeks). Just say my name, it may help a bit. You can also buy a set by Benedetti, THE French pickups maker. Michel, who's dead now, has been making boutique pickups all his life and has transmitted his full knowledge before dying. Ask @ped...

  28. Top advice there. A set up can make a massive difference. I think I'd been playing for about ten years before I'd even heard of a set up but once you've had a good set up you'll never go back. Think of it as having a service on your car, the way it drives and sounds much smoother after all the filters and fluids are changed. Changing strings can completely change the character of your bass too, but don't just think if the sound think of the feel, it's a very personal thing so be prepared to experiment. People on here sometimes sell second hand strings after trying them out for a few mins so could be easy to try a few sets.

  30. I posed the question 'who will make our cables' the thread is just there 👇 a few below this. I alluded to the retirement of our very own obbm aka bassic bits aka Dave. Well, I'm delighted to tell you that @Chienmortbb has recently made and delivered for me, a bespoke instrument cable at a very competitive price and in very good time. I know the test of a cable is time, and only time will tell if this will prove entirely reliable. However, it looks and feels excellent, is noiseless and I am happy to recommend it. After all, if no one on Basschat had made a noise about obbm cables I would never have discovered them.

  38. Yup, looks a dead ringer for the early Cort A6. I suspect that Tanglewood had a few sample 'Baron' 6ers made, then Cort took over production. The Baron is a 96 with a serial number of 00064664, not sure how to decode that, but the 000 part might suggest it was a very low number run. In any event, £500 would probably be about where I'd think to value it, I wouldn't expect much more and probably wouldn't take much less if I were to sell it.

  39. Our problem was getting enough volume without feedback. In the end I bought a Behringer graphic EQ and cut all of the irrelevant frequencies right out which made things a load easier. The main part of the problem though was that our 'singer' has absolutely zero mic technique and no interest in learning either.

  40. Have a word with Jaime at Creamery pick ups in Manchester - my 58 P he did is hands down probably the best pick up i have ever played.

  41. SR300 are great basses. I reckon your best bet would be to Invest in a good set up and try some new strings on your Ibanez. I had a very early 2000's Ibanez SR500 and it was fantastically sensitive to the strings I put on it. Feeling and sounding awful with nickel 45-105s, bland with stainless Elites 40-100, better with stainless elites 35-95 and absolutely incredible with Thomastik jazz flats. £300 would get you something different, but not necessarily "better". If your heart is set on a new bass Second hand would definitely be the way to go, but sadly options will be limited at shops and trade in on your bass wouldn't be a huge sum.

  42. Your present Ibanez is a fine bass; there's not much better in that price bracket. Why do you want another in its place..?

  45. I would buy a Harley Benton and with the rest I would spend it on cheap hookers, coke and bottles of JD so I could be the proper rock star I should have always been. If I can't play Paranoid properly on that , I'm not going to play it properly on a multi thousand pound coffee table bass either.

  47. It's been a little while since I did anything to this but whilst I continue playing my mini bass instead of finishing off completely, I decided to get on with a couple of jobs on this. FIrstly, I needed to decide on what the front of this should look like. I opted for the flamed maple veneer so I can also do a matching headstock - this build is also about re-using and the maple veneer can from my dad who had this knocking around for years so sort of fits into this as it wasn't bought specifically for this build and was potentially destined for the bin as there are a few cracks in it. I cut the cracked sections away which left me just enough width for the top. I then glued the two pieces of veneer together along the straight line I just cut. I know this sounds a bit odd as the veneer is only 0.6mm thick but I wanted to do this to give me a singe sheet to glue onto the body. I glued along the edge of the veneer and held them with masking tape until dry. Net up I sanded the top of the body flat ready to accept the veneer and drew the centre line. Using a gloss paint roller and wood glue I put an even coat on both the bbody and veneer them stuck them together, holding them in place with plenty of clamps!! So this is how the tope now looks - not perfectly book matched but is fine for this project. I'm planning on having a black scratch plate on this, only because I got given one and I want to re-use that too!! Here's a mack-up of how that might look: But I also tried it without the scratch plate and that looks kind of nice too!! Decision, decisions,...
