  1. I am absolutely gutted to be putting this up for sale but needs must. A Pre CBS 1963 Precision which is all original on parts but has a refinish that was done way back in its past in Lake Placid Blue All the pickups, wiring loom, neck, body reverse tuners. Bridge etc are all original. It has a Brazilian rosewood fretboard which Is just dark and lustrous. The truss rod is flush with pocket and set up to perfection (for me) but still turns freely both ways. I have listed this early before obligatory stripping for pictures of neck, pocket, loom etc to judge the interest in it, it is set up perfectly and I’m not going break it down if no one is interested. The tone is rich from this and the pickups are hot, for a passive it pumps out the bass as I’m sure @walshy will chime in and confirm. Something I know I can never replace but real life takes over nostalgia. There is no original Case but it does come with a fitted Fender red label moulded hard shell or I have a brand new fender tweed modern hard case if you would prefer that. It’s strung with old La Bella 760Fs deep talking 45-105 flats and it’s a beast with these on. It comes with the bridge and pick up covers. I will send the serial to anyone that wants to check it, I welcome and do encourage anyone interested in the bass to come and see/try it for themselves. I won’t be posting this, I will hand it over personally. If you want me to take it to bass direct or bass bros for authentication I’m happy to do it at the buyers cost. I approached Will at bass direct earlier this year and he said he would list it at £6,900.

  2. I’ve been mulling over this for a long time as I absolutely LOVE this bass, but it’s time. We’re moving house and the proceeds of this sale will go towards the deposit… This is a fantastic example of a 1966 Jazz Bass, classic transition-era “target” sunburst with dots and binding. Bought from pmjos of this forum in 2018 (original ad here). It’s a dream bass. It’s had a refret with period-correct frets, performed amazingly by Martin Petersen of the Camden Bass Gallery, to ensure that the binding has remained intact and that there’s no damage, cracking, etc. I felt this was necessary as, when I got it I think there may have been a minor hump in the upper fretboard which caused some choking out in the upper frets, and it relieved that issue. The bass plays cleanly on every fret of the register, and I’m a pretty heavy-handed player…Otherwise, the bass is totally original in every other aspect. You can see the details in Phil’s ad, but this is a great-sounding bass and super clean. Since I got it, it’s been scrupulously cared for and has only been out of the house for recording and never gigged, so no additional dings or damage. The pickups sound fantastic, each with their own character when soloed (particularly fantastic classic burp on the bridge pickup!) but with that textbook lively mid/late 60s JB tone when combined. It comes with the original case, and also the original funny little leather strap and registration card. I’ve included some general pics below without taking the thing apart, which I’m always loathe to do, and also some shots of the neck so you can see the quality of the refret. I’m also a pretty lousy photographer, but you can view an excellent shot PowerPoint depicting the more detailed aspects of the bass here. Obviously, it also comes with the pickup and bridge covers/ashtrays, I just don’t have these installed currently as, as most probably know, it makes it a bit more difficult to play the bass. Weight confirmed at 3.977Kg I’m looking for £6750. Just to clarify I would strongly prefer collection and inspection from my home in London NW3. No international shipping! Sorry. I’ll consider UK postage, but only with discussion and careful consideration on courier method to ensure that there’s no possibility of damage during shipping, and this will definitely need to be arranged by the buyer with appropriate insurance. Absolutely no trades on this, unfortunately, as I need the cash. I hope everything’s clear, but happy to answer any and all questions. This is clearly a beautiful piece of bass and Fender history and I’m immensely saddened to have to make the decision to move it on.

  3. Original SVT II 300 watt All valve amplifier. This thing is a beast and the tone is all it should be. A lot of people say this beats the SVT II pro and I have to agree. The Bias is good and I play through it a few times a week so the caps are all good as are the tubes. This model doesn’t come up very often for sale. There is a a wheeled generic Flight Case with it and due to the weight it’s not a shippable item(unless the buyer takes ownership and responsibility for it.) im happy to drive within a 30 mile radius from my home B14 in Birmingham and further for some petrol money.

  4. No idea whether anyone else does this (with their partners). Wife will fire up Gumtree or Marketplace, she'll do a search for bass guitars and will scroll; she'll show me a photo of an advert and ask what the bass is and how much it's on sale for. In most cases I'm correct with the bass, points deducted for a question ('Which country is it made? USA? Mexico? etc.). Typical exchange: 'Fender Jazz Bass Special,' I'll go. '£950.00.' '£900.00,' she'll answer. '£50.00 out. How do you know all this? You really need to stop spending so much time on Basschat.' Lots of fun.

  6. Up for Sale a bass I purchased as a project to renovate, but when I got hold of it it played fine and is in great condition for its age, missing the pickup surrounds (I’m sure someone on here has 3d printed some) It doesn’t come with a hard case, I do have an old soft case It lives in atm. It’s not a light bass around 10 pounds due to the aluminium neck but it does make for a unique tone. If your looking to get your Mick Karn on, this will do it. I’ve looked for these online and most are between £1200 - £1600 albeit with cases. Im selling it for what I payed for it, im not convinced with eBay costings. Happy to drive within 30 miles or more for petrol. Without the hard case I’d rather not post but would trust it to @walshy man with a Van.

  11. The new updated has an OC-2 and Meatbox model, nice for bass to get some attention. No experience with a Meatbox, but the OC-2 model is bloody good , compares very, very well with the original '82 I have on the board!

  14. Wife got me a GSS Baby Sumo for my birthday. It's tiny! It's loud! Comes in a lovely little metal flight case. It's barely the size of two paperback books. Just gave it a brief test with my Hamer Cruisebass into a GED2112-DI. (We live in a detached house, neighbours away. Chortle!) Man alive, the clarity is incredible. I've jacked the Ged into a variety of amps and effects returns thereof over the years and it's never sounded like this... it's almost been a disappointment at times. It sounds like when I've just gone straight into a mixing desk. Lovely!

  17. From everything I've seen, Lydon's been an insufferable arse for years, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the other blokes never even gave him a call about the original benefit shows, doubt he'd have been up for anything that didn't benefit him. Throwing his support, little though it may be, behind Trump and Farage really just seals the deal that Lydon needs to be put out to pasture. Frank Carter has always been a great frontman, back in the Gallows days and more recently with the Rattlesnakes, so him smashing it with Pistols isn't a surprise at all.

  18. A cracking bass. I have the slightly older version with the unbound neck, August 65 I think, a fantastic instrument and a testament to the period. Whoever gets this will not be disappointed I'm sure, real piece of Fender history. GLWTS.

  21. I've had two, a Dingwall ABZ5 with 37-34 inch scale and an Ibanez with 32-30. I didn't find any tonal advantages at all and as at the time I was playing in a big band with transposing instruments and I needed the low C and F quite a lot I found that quite an annoying stretch over the course of a gig. I'm glad I tried them, but ultimately they are not for me.

  23. Agreed. This sort of thing is nothing new and isn't limited to guitars. A pal of mine is a violin maker. I won't drop his name, but he's highly regarded. He told me there are plenty of name instruments out there that are exactly as you describe - cut and shuts, refins, or originals with some non-original parts, rather than out and out fakes. Virtually all Strads, Guarneris, etc have non-original necks and fingerboards, because the method of constructing and attaching the neck when they were made was different to how it's done now. Back then, the neck was not angled. It has been discovered since that angling the neck, creating a steeper break angle over the bridge, gives more power and a more brilliant tone, so pretty well all of them have been modified. Others have replacement parts, due to the ravages of time, several hundred years of use and even unfortunate accidents. Some have few original parts left. The line between a modified original and a re-creation/'fake' can be pretty blurred.

  31. It finally arrived today, and I must admit that my first impressions were rather mixed. It was perhaps unfair, but I took delivery at work, which meant that the only initial go I could have on it was through an old 30W amp and not very loud - basically "is it working?". I was initially impressed with the fit and finish. The tuners are excellent - smooth, easy turning but with no play. The neck is what one expects from Sire - satin finish, lovely rolled fingerboard edges. But I have to say that I was not impressed with the knobs - they feel lightweight and cheap, and to cap it off the passive tone ring was loose and kept turning beyond its end. I wasn't sure if the knob was loose or it was a dodgy pot. The pots are all different in feel especially in the detents - the bass knob has a very severe detent that engages with an audible click, but the blend pot's detent is vague and very easy to turn past. Anyway, I got it home and things got better. Thankfully, the tone ring/knob was just loose, pot was fine. Giving it a proper blast through my pedalboard things really opened up, tone-wise. The pickups sound great to my ears. The neck pickup, despite its diminutive size compared to the bridge holds its own when soloed, but admittedly does get a little lost when blended. The preamp is OK once you get used to it. I find that the bass pot does very little. I have found that the best way to control this bass is to leave the treble and bass centred, dime the mid control then use the mid sweep as your primary tone control, using the others for seasoning. The passive tone works in both active and passive modes, which pleased me. It doesn't have a huge range, but glad it's there. The blend pot is a bit all or nothing, but that doesn't bother me as I'd be using it like a switch anyway. Little creature comforts include the passive mode working even with the batteries removed, making it a full on "get out of jail free" card in case of battery depletion. There is very little volume difference between passive and active - in fact with the preamp set flat, I'd say passive is louder. My wireless bugs get along fine with the bass regardless of it being in active or passive mode - I know some cheap wireless bugs don't like active basses, but mine is happy enough (Lekato WS-70 for reference). So my main (and to be honest only) beef is the knobs. I think they're ghastly. They'll be getting changed - replacements have already been ordered. But that's my only complaint, apart from nitpicky points about the preamp. Enough waffle, have some pics.

  32. Hi everyone, I saw the Cavern in house PA is up for sale and it sent me down a McCartney fan boy rabbit hole for a few (many) hours. https://www.gottahaverockandroll.com/The_Beatles_Cavern_Club_Stage_Used_Vortexion_Valve-LOT56162.aspx I’m interested in the "Cavern Quad" amp /"Coffin cab" as used by Paul in the period after using his 30W Selmer truvox plugged into the Coffin 1x15” reflex cab and moving onto VOX amps. Probably much of mid to late 62 I guess whilst touring (8 months) http://beatlesplus50.blogspot.com/2011/10/october-1961-barber-coffin-nobody-know.html Info online notes the cab and modified / rehoused amp were made for Johnny Gustafson by Big three ex member/sound Engineer/producer and Electronics expert Adrian Barber. There are a few pictures around of the coffin 1x15” bass reflex cab, but nothing I can find of the amp? The photos from the Cavern show a Quad II/22 setup on the floor = I wonder if this is it before being rehoused in an army surplus case? https://www.diyaudio.com/community/attachments/beatles-gear-pdf.789924/ This video is great too. at 13:54 it is mentioned. There are some photos online of a white “Cavern Quad” amp on top of a coffin style cab but I cannot find the source of these and whether someone made a replica or it’s original. Does anyone have any more photos or information on the modified rehoused Quad II/22 preamp and power amp or potentially the white reproduction? Probably all sounded good for the time, Quad hifi stuff is excellent. Thanks in advance...Neil

  35. I have exactly the same model; amazing basses. @Bunion is right, it actually does the Mick Karn tone better than my fretless Wal. Some really lovely figured grain on this too (American black walnut with maple stringers), normally quite a plain grain on this model. The notoriously fragile walnut pickup surrounds always break, but are more cosmetic than functional. Crazy cheap for a US made vintage bass of this quality. GLWTS

  41. Here you go. I actually put them into one playlist to make it easier. Please note that the quality is not great as most are about 15 years old before we had fancy GoPro's or iPhones etc. However, you can here the basslines, especially with headphones. I defy anyone to say Angel of Harlem is not a great fun little bassline as well 😂

  42. Is your volume maxed out at gigs? If it is you might look at more power. So if you still have some headroom I wouldn’t worry about changing things , unless you really want to try out another amp. I have modular mixed cabs that were designed to be used together , but most gigs only require a single cab. Generally have a ton of headroom.

  43. I have made a correction to my initial statement, specifically regarding the bass control on the preamp. Having been assured by another poster that it should provide massive gobs of bass when called upon I opened my Z7 up again to take another look. Turns out that when I went in there the first time, I might have snagged the wires to the bass pot a little. They are not soldered on, they use connector blocks which are pushed onto the terminals of the pots. I did notice that connector to the bass pot was at a bit of a jaunty angle. So I pushed it all the way on, then tested it et voilà - working bass control. Phew, I really couldn't be arsed with returning it, especially since everything else is pretty damn great. Now whether I caused this issue when I was doing the photos of the guts, or if it had been that way the whole time, I couldn't say, eh, it's sorted now. So, to confirm, the bass control does a lot. I used it last night to good effect - was playing on a small stage which despite not being very high was being a bit boomy. Simply dialled back the bass on the preamp a little - problem solved!

  44. First of all, I would say make up your own mind about it before doing anything - everything you've read about the knobs here is personal opinion. They might not bother you, and there would be nothing wrong with that. But to answer your question: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/product/east-knob/ They only have chrome in stock and double unfortunately, they only have 1 stack knob left in stock. Sorry if that was me taking the second and third last ones. I guess you could ask when they'll have more. Other knobs are available - most of them are a standard size. Good luck! I think "burgundy mist" would ordinarily be the full colour name, but after they got their knuckles rapped for the initial headstock design they're probably feared of being sued by Fender or whoever used that term first. Or something got lost in translation, I dunno. But yes, I wouldn't drink burgundy that colour, it's gone off, mate!

  45. I guess everyone is keen on hearing it as well, eh? I been having this thing lately where I keep all my basses in different tunings with different string gauges. This one ended up in C standard with 115-55 strings. It sounds like it was made for low tunings, YAYY METAL!! \m/
