To put in my tuppence worth - Andy, I am very thankful that you have continually made yourself available on this site to help with any GenzBenz related questions that I've had over the years. You have helped diagnose problems that needed fixed, pointed me in the right direction to get those things fixed and have saved me from making things worse by messing with things I don't really understand. It saddens me that this some on this forum are less appreciative of your efforts. I'm still a proud owner of two Streamliner heads that will have to prised from my cold, dead hands. Thanks Andy.7 points

Findings to date I really didn’t know the fingerboard as well As I thought. 5 def helps with this Lakland make a lovely instrument I really love the bartolini pickups with the John East preamp, it just works as a set up. I think I will always be a bass player who owns a 5 string, rather than a 5 string bass player. The 5 string version of something I’ve wanted to try for years came up recently... but another 5 string? No thanks. (Probably if the 4 string equivalent of my Lakland came up I wouldn’t mind switching, not that I’m looking for that) my realisation of how limited I am musically led me to start learning piano. so overall positive!5 points

Up for sale for possibly the third time of asking is my Alpher Cobia V2 Prime. I had resolved to keep this one and recently spent over £300 on changing the pick ups and pots but I can’t escape the fact that I would really like a jazz bass or similar. This bass is really well specced with Hipshot hardware throughout and brand new Nordstrand pickups, an NP4A in the neck position and a NJ4SE at the bridge. The body is made from one piece of rippled Ash which has a pleasing texture and a really smart aged appearance. The neck is flamed roasted maple and the fingerboard is rocklite. The action is on the low side and could benefit from a slight tweak but all in all the bass plays superbly well and sounds excellent as you would expect of a top UK custom instrument built with an exceptional level of attention to detail. If you spec this bass on the Alpher site at the moment the price comes out north of 3K. Having inspected it carefully I can’t find any dings, scratches or cosmetic issues, with the exception of some minor wear on the scratch plate which is to be expected. I would rate the condition as a solid 9.8/10. Weight wise it comes in at 3.8 kg and is very comfy on a strap or when played in a seated position. Anyone looking for a really well specified p/j will find this hard to beat especially since the recent upgrade which seems to have given the instrument a warmer more vintage tone. If you have any questions please ask. The bass can be posted if necessary as it comes in a hard Hiscox case, I am also happy to meet half way to hand the bass over in person. Trade wise I would happily consider a nice jazz bass of lower value with cash my way, particularly if anyone has one of the nice new top end Sire basses that they want to offload, or even a Musicman but something with more than one pickup. Weight wise nothing heavier than 4kg preferably and instruments that are in good condition. * Please note that if you instigate a conversation via pm please at least have the manners to reply to messages even if you have decided to change your mind, which you are quite at liberty to do. Thanks for looking. Please note some images show the bass fitted with the original blade style pickups. Thanks to Walshy for the photo showing the weight.4 points

My second smaller "Psycho Synth" board, which I'm looking forward to messing around with:4 points

Almost.....didn't put the board in our drummers car.....doofus.....my fault......promoter found it at the end of the night and kindly took it with him........then unfortunately left it in his Uber. So in a roundabout way spot on 🙂. All's well that ends well4 points

The more I think about it I believe this was exactly it. I got more into the trying, buying, selling than playing. I just needed a reset I think. I also got stupidly engrossed in the daft find the perfect bass nonsense when TBH I think for 95% of us 95% of the time a basic Fender would do the job. Which is why Jabba is building me two custom jobs, ahem.4 points

If your sofa is up against a wall sliding a hard case behind the sofa is a good hiding place for a bass... Culling is hard but it's therapeutic and really, if a custom bass didn't work out for you don't keep it! If you have three jazzes but one sounds best, keep it and sell the others. You can only play one at a time. Use the money for something else. I often criticise my guitarist for having 13 guitars, most of which are crap. He needs to sell all of them and buy two excellent guitars with the proceeds. I need to take that advice with my basses! I'm on 6 basses. One is going on Saturday. Its the most beautiful jazz bass I have ever seen, but I'm not playing it. It was a tough decision that has taken me a few months but ultimately 6 is too many. There are 2 I will never sell because of sentimental value (18th birthday present) or massive drop in sell on value (new USA Stingray) , and another is a bitsa so I've spent more than its worth on parts. The 4th keeper is purely for aesthetics, it's a headless bass for my 80s band. The other 2 are surplus, though fantastic and desirable instruments, to me at least! Now to move on some cabs and maybe an amp head!4 points

And a new toy to play with - kindly given to me by my father in law, a planer/thicknesser4 points

A fairly positive update... It turns out my singer's neighbour is a retired electrical and electronics engineer, who still occassionally fixes PA gear and amps for local bands. He's been quite frustrated that he can't lay his hands on a service manual for this or anything similar, but has having a go anyway. He's replaced an internal fuse and tested several components in the vicinity of the blown VDR - and they are apparently fine. He's actually temporarily got the amp running without the blown VDR - though it's apparently needed for safety, so he's going to source a replacement for it. Hopefully he gets this back up and running. Though I think I may still buy an extra small amp as a backup given how cheap some of these micro class D amps are!4 points

Five or six years ago I had almost 50 guitars and basses plus a load of synthesisers. I sold most of them and I am now down to: 2 x 5 sting basses which I use with one band, a main and a spare for gigs 2 x Bass VI which I use with the other band, again a main and a spare for gigs 2 x guitars for writing and if I ever get the urge to play guitar live again. The plug-in synths that come free with Logic. Some of it wan't easy, but I decided to be ruthless and anything that hadn't been played for at least 2 years went straight away. The rest was done by a process of elimination using them for rehearsals and deciding which I liked the best, and selling the others.4 points

Hello, This is a great example of an overwater. It comes in at 4.8 kg. It has very light play wear hear and there, but no dinks, just very light wear. It has a light scratch on the back. The bass is just beutiful and sounds clear and punchy with no issues at all. Comes with a nice hard case or gig bag. Sadly i cannot post as no boxes, so collect only please.3 points

Selling this Gretsch Junior Jet II bass in Sunburst. It is only a few months old but my custom build short scale should be arriving soon and this was (a very good) stopgap. You will see in the photos that it is in excellent condition. I have made the following upgrades to it: CTS potentiometers with orange drop capacitor, Switchcraft switch, TrueTone full contact jack socket and American Gretsch control knobs (necessitated by the wider shaft on the CTS pots). All of that (approx £50 worth) will be included in the sale for £225. I have also fitted a high mass bridge with proper chunky brass saddles and Gotoh machine heads. You can have the bridge for an extra £10 and the machine heads for £30, which is half what I paid for them, otherwise I will put the originals back on. I have pictured the original components in a separate photo. If you are strapped for cash, I would strongly recommend you choose the bridge. The original Gretsch bridge is adequate at best in my opinion. The Gotoh machine heads have a better feel, wider posts and better gearing (1:20) than the originals. Whichever configuration you go for, you will get the original parts in the photo. Also because I am such a generous human being (LoL) I will throw in a barely used set of Dunlop 45/105 stainless steel flatwounds that I tried to get a more traditional sound. They worked for that and are good strings but I decided I preferred the more aggressive sound from the round wounds. Anyway, you can experiment for yourself and save yourself the best part of £50 in the process. If you don’t know these basses there is plenty of stuff online but a quick summary: short scale (a 30.9”), twin Gretsch humbuckers, single volume and tone controls with 3-way switch, 40mm nut, 19mm string spacing at the bridge. The pickups are the hottest standard fit I have come across in any bass. They have their own individual sound: not as muddy as Epiphone/Gibson EB0/EB3, perhaps not as aggressive as a Thunderbird. I have read somewhere that you can get a Precision like tone if you play with the EQ on your amp. Possibly but the mid position is pretty unique in my opinion. Famous users include Mike Kerr of Royal Blood; well when they started out anyway but now he has sponsorship from all sorts. You can come and try/collect in Fakenham. I would meet/deliver within a 50 mile radius. In extremis I will courier at your expense and on receipt of full payment: sorry to sound untrusting but I have been had before. Street price new currently varies between £293 and £350, depending on which online box shifter you choose. @£225 you get a practically new bass with better electrics and for £265 all the mods you could want, short of very expensive replacement pickups (there don’t appear to be many drop in options available in the UK).3 points

Selling my very unique Alleva Coppolo LG5 Custom. It is like new (besides one small chipped out ding mentioned below) and has the following spec: Spalted Alder Body - very lightweight, yet quite responsive, this is Jimmys most expensive body wood choice Amberburst Finish - looks less orange than in the pics Very nice Macassar Ebony board with binding MOP dots 34" 19mm spacing at bridge Jimmys proprietary pickups and electronics, pickups in 60s positions Built 2019, Weighs 3,9 kg (!) I bought it in new condition, but just today I managed to chip out a small piece of finish at the back of the neck joint - I will add a picture later. Besides that the bass is absolutely like new - even the transparent foil is still on the back cover plate. The sound is typical Alleva-like, so it tends towards the classical early Fender timbre - although the Ebony board adds some snap and opens the upper registers - if desired. I personally prefer the vintage models, but for players with a slightly more flexible and modern demand this Alleva would be a great find. Asking 4.900 EUR (4500 GBP) plus shipping, trade value is 5.400 EUR. Trades considered: Alleva Coppolo LM5/LM4, Ken Smith BSR Elite, Fenders until 1973, F Basses with nice tops, Fodera Elite 34" or less, LeFay Remigton Steele 6, Mattisson. .3 points

This was my bands first, and possibly last, gig of 2021. It was a video for the blues section of the jazz & blues festival up in Edinburgh. We didn't do too bad considering we hadn't played a gig in 15 or so months. We had two rehearsals beforehand to go over the songs a couple of times, one of which the drummer couldn't make. I managed to record the audio of the video while it was streamed on 17th june..3 points

Well, no band (not just because of Covid) and wasn't practicing, wasn't even picking them up so I sold up and bought some camera gear, but, having said that the two basses being built here... ...are for me so really I should qualify that it felt great to sell all my gear however, I do have two more in the pipeline, ahem.3 points

I think that is a bit harsh. I used to work with an electronics company in the 80s that made CCD pipe inspection cameras. They were the state of the art, however they had quite a high failure rate, and that is because that was the state of the art. When we first started we had to have a gold bonding machine to connect the CCDs to the package. Of course, we could have not used any component without a fully proven reliability record, in which case we would have been sticking a kid with a notebook into a sewer, there weren't other options. Some companies are using componants that have just come out, most of the time everything is fine, but not every company can just sit that far behind the curve. In this case (and I know nothing about it), it doesn't seem unreasonable to select some LEDs to do a job and then find that 3 years later they are breaking down, if you then try to remedy the situation - that is how manufacturing is. Especially when that is not a critical part as in this case. You would not expect them to be failing, and 99.9% of the time you would be right.3 points

It's great. The footage of sly and the family stone is electric. The gospel section is really quite moving. I really like the way the film has been put together. The context is so important.3 points

My first show in over six months was Friday night in Camden. It's only my 3rd since March 2020 & I found the other two fairly soulless affairs, compared to my manic 2019 calendar. This one was great fun. We were a little ramshackle in places (by our standards) but delivered a fairly decent 45 minute performance.3 points

There's no substitute, unlike basses, where modern techniques have made excellent 'budget' models available. Good cymbals are not cheap at all, and inexpensive ones really hurt the ears, once spoiled for the good'uns..!3 points
-
Cymbals. I'm really bad for it. I look at 2nd hand cymbal listings at least twice a week. I have to force myself to close the tabs. Sometimes I just can't resist. If you'd told me 10 years ago my main instrument would be drums, and I'd be taking £2K worth of cymbals to hit at every gig, I'd have laughed my derrière off3 points

I used to have 7 basses (looking back that was absolutely crazy). Now I am down to two basses (jazz and a stingray) and two guitars (strat and a tele). It is really liberating, when you only have one or two instruments, and you don't have to think about buying or selling gear. Get them sold, enjoy the space (both physically and head space)!3 points

If you don’t need the money just keep them, I’ve got 13 at the moment and like them all, there’s a couple I don’t play very often, but they are there if I want to 🙂3 points

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and thought it was terrific - both from a musical perspective and from capturing American society at such a fractured and fragile point in time. And, as someone else pointed out, the sound quality is really good. I found it enlightening and heartening in equal measure.2 points

That's what i need to do but my bass cave is a bit cramped at moment with some boxes being stored for few weeks at a time to stop cats damaging the boxes. Time for a clear up i reckon Dave. Dave2 points

I don't think you can level that criticism unless you have the OEM datasheet with the claimed MTBF and that the MTBF was unreasonably short. Unless you can demonstrate that you soak test the LEDs in your own designs for five years before speccing them, I think you are being unreasonable in your criticism.2 points

I made the 'mistake' of getting the very best from the outset, inspired at the time by the Joe Morello 'Seven Sound Set'. With my Camco kit, I bought Païste 602 Sound-Edge hats, crash and ride. What I didn't know at the time (but do now ...) was that they are not as resistant as other, lesser, cymbals. For the light, folk/pop I played in the UK before moving to France, they were ideal. Once in the context of a non-mic'ed French variety band, they couldn't take the punishment. They were replaced by Païste 2002's; I now play mostly Sabian AXX (a much more modern-sounding repertoire...), but bought a pair of re-issue 602 hats for recording. I've learned my lesson; I don't 'play out' with those. The 2002's are fine for 'live' work. A pair of original 602 hats, in good condition, are now like hen's teeth. The re-issues are, however, splendid (but still not cheap..!). Who'd be a drummer, eh..?2 points

My bad - lol! There was nothing originally in the box from Andertons and I've not actually used the Spector gig bag as I've had another that does the job well (my old Sire gig bag). However I've just dug out the Spector gig bag and tucked into one of the pouches was a little packet with three allen keys and two strap locks...all's well that ends well 😁2 points

And here's what it sounded like at its first outing, a dep gig at zero notice with a more-or-less scratch band. This band may turn out to be a decent side-project for me ... festivals and midweek gigs to fill the yawning gaps between weekend gigs. 😂2 points
