Well…12. Twelve years. Still here… I won’t share this years birthday photo as we were dancing around at 8.30am in our dressing gowns. But yeah - 12 years. I’ve learned nowt. 😉

Unless you need the money, I don't see a problem with owning more basses (or anything else) than you need. A collection of basses is an interesting, beautiful, playable, talking point that brings pleasure. A collection of money is just about the dullest thing I can think of. A collection of money is just a load of vouchers that you can exchange for things later in life if you need to. Basses are exactly the same thing but far more pleasurable to own.

Here’s a thing. My Eldest Daughter turned 11 yesterday. I joined Basschat in the early hours of 1st August 2009, as I couldn’t sleep and was absolutely having a rabbit in headlights Moment at the prospect of being a dad. So...what does 11 years look like... I was annoyed yesterday - due to politics, it was the first time I’ve not had a photograph of her on her birthday taken by me. Ella’s 2nd Birthday was the first one I did solo; the band I was in threw her a party for that one 🤣 Shame I haven’t got photographs of 11 years worth of bass sales and purchases on basschat. I don’t think the servers could handle the upload. Anyhow...happy 11th Basschativersary to me.

Just great to hear such a seasoned player give an impromptu talk on his old bass……Ive used mandolin wire on my fretted basses for many years since hearing of him using it. Being mainly a fretless player myself I immediately took to the lower width and profile of mando wire and recently made a fretted with a reverse P pickup as well, due to the exact reason he gave about reversing them.

Many months later, but I really got into my 434 and finally took a nice shot of it. I've got a gig on Sat and I think she's going to be my main. I also bought a black sparkle BB1100s which was a rash decision mourning the loss of the BBP34. It is nice but still too heavy. I'm trying VERY hard to resist the BBP34 in the Marketplace...

Yeah, guitars and drums for me too. I wouldn't get more than one kit but I recently upgraded from a trusty Pearl Export to a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute. The Oak Custom X snare is an even more recent acquisition. I reached a point where I had the guitars I wanted a few years ago, to cover the kind of stuff I play on them.

She never forgave me for the white jazz, or the sting CS. The only two basses she ever mentions. She said the Sting 55 was the coolest bass she’s ever seen.

And here's what it sounded like at its first outing, a dep gig at zero notice with a more-or-less scratch band. This band may turn out to be a decent side-project for me ... festivals and midweek gigs to fill the yawning gaps between weekend gigs. 😂

I took delivery of one of the preamp pedals earlier today. Very well built and some very nice features, including the Tilt function. The Tube channel ( well, emulated Tube) sounds pretty good too and does what it says on the tin.

No, I don't. I have 2 basses, 3 amps and 4 cabs. They all get used. I have 5 screwdrivers, 4 saws, 2 spirit levels etc. They all get used as well. IMO owning stuff is fine if you use it. It's still fine if you don't, but not for me. If you want to sell but can't get started, just pick the bass you play the least. Keep going until you arrive at the last 2. That's when you stop selling.

I use a FIshman Platinum Pro, this one: https://www.thomann.de/gb/fishman_platinum_pro_eq.htm The reason I like it so much is that is has everything I may need and nothing I don't, every function has a dedicated knob so quick adjustments are as easy as they would be on an amp or pedal with no screens. Here's the features I use the most on it: - Accurate tuner (with mute function!), switchable with bright screen. - One knob compression which sounds great. - Switchable boost - Sweepable mid control - HPF (not the best but handy on boomy stages) - Brilliance control, handy for rolling off excess treble/click while retaining your core sound - Notch filter - Phase inversion Obviously the actual preamp in there is quality and the DI is super clean, this replaced a small pedalboard (Korg tuner, MXR M80 and an EBS Multicomp) with a single pedal and actually gave me more usable functionality while also fitting into the top pocket of my Gator ProGo Deluxe! If you like clean sounds then it would have to be on your list, especially if you double on acoustic guitar or upright bass as all the eq points are switchable (one switch for guitar/bass mode) and the filters are handy for acoustic instruments. If it failed or was stolen I would order another one straight away.

Having bought this from our very own Hiram.k.hackenbacker, I have to say I am in love. Barely put the damn thing down - Im not usually a fan of Jazz necks, but OMG.. this thing is amazing. Cheers Warren! Well worth the money and the wait! Won't bore you with specs as there are already two threads on this bass, plus some great pics on Classic and cool's gallerywith much better than I can churn out with an ageing iphone.. She has been christened "The Deaky".

Was working at Silverstone last night - It certainly feels like gigs are pretty much “back to normal”. I’m not sure the Covid figures will look so great after this - I was certainly happier being “this” side of the fence.

I've picked up an immaculate condition, hardly used Trace hybrid combo. And I couldn't be happier. I've been after a Trace, I've been thinking about hybrid valve amps.. I somehow got all in one glowing green package. I've wanted a single amp to do my covers band with traditional rock, so a bit of valve drive would be nice for that, but also my 80s covers band where a super clean amp sound or better still a Trace amp sound would suit. I've got it all in this. I don't think I've ever seen one before. The front panel has... Harmonic emphasis in/ out and level Pre shape in/ out Graphic EQ 12 band sliders and in/ out button Valve stage in/ out and drive level Low and high band compression on separate rotary dials with a balance control in the middle Noise reduction in/ out Effects loop in/ out Mute switch I've never seen all these bells and whistles at once in a Trace. I'm bowled over. I've tinkered for about an hour using a Washburn Status headless for super clean sounds and a passive PJ DiMarzio loaded bitsa for valve drive. The valve drive is warm and fuzzy but not harsh like emulated drives can be. It's not going to satisfy people who want really hairy drive but it's enough for me looking for some grit and deep underlying fuzziness to the sound without it overpowering, works especially well with the mids ramped up a bit. What's interesting is dialling back the valve drive but keeping the valve section on and playing clean, it gives a bit more punch. Can't wait to investigate more of what this amp can do on Monday night with the band!

@Andyjr1515 has used magnets in three builds for me - make my life so much easier. Good choice.

I agree with all these, why would a seller not want an instrument to be set up at the cost of the buyer. As said even if the intended buyer pulls out it makes it a lot more attractive to future ones. Iffy methinks.

It was over-tightened (concave) so I let the truss rod off a little and it's now virtually flat. Adjusted the saddles at the same time to put the intonation back in tune. My local luthier and Bernie Goodfellow both said to leave a bass to settle overnight before doing final micro adjustments. That's where I'm at. It feels much more playable already.

I think he shot himself in the foot. I've just lowered the action - the truss rod was stiff but not maxed out. In fact it was over-tightened so I had to let it off slightly. Made the adjustments - will leave it over night and refine the set up/ micro adjustments in the morning.

+1 The Tech21 VT Bass DI Deluxe is a versatile pre that offers Analogue flexibility. No fancy displays just use your ears to assign 6 tones to each of the preset footswitches. DI out for FOH and 2nd output jack for backline or powered monitor. Simples.

I've owned several Warwick basses since mid 80s and have never encountered bowing problems. Unless, the shop has no problem (which I doubt) with you turning up with your tools and attempting an in shop setup, I would steer clear!

I’d go for it - if you hate it (which I doubt you will) and sell for £300, it’s cost you £15 to find out you need something else. if you love it - (which I think you will) it’s a great bass for not much coin.

What we are trying to do is to introduce people to all sorts of ways of building cabs and encouraging them to experiment. At the same time we want to offer designs that will be satisfying to own and will work first time. We're also trying to give enough information that people can do their own adaptations. If somebody wanted to there is no reason not to build the 50l MK3 cab with the drivers and crossover Stevie designed but using the 'easy build' technique. Or you could build the cab we are discussing here with a circumference brace borrowed from the MK3, or indeed a rear port. If you keep the overall volume and the port dimensions the same you preserve the tuning so if you wanted a taller cab or one that matched your amp dimensions that's all possible. Everything we do on here is creative commons, we're happy for people to build the cabs for their own use or to build one for a friend so long as it is done on a not for profit basis. If anyone wants to put together a small run of CNC flat pack kits for BassChatters on a not for profit basis that's good too from my point of view. I'm not sure what the next project will be, I've got all sorts of plans but I need to clear some of my stinky poo out of the house to make some space. I'm also being reminded I have to fit a new bathroom
