For the top, I've done a number of re-sand, re-slurryandbuffs as I've found sanding scratches, etc, and now this is the second 'build-up' coat. The process I will then use will be a bit like I do when I slurry and buff stained wood with tru-oil - I build up enough coats to be able to slurry the tru-oil itself, but not deep enough to reach the wood. That will give me a super-smooth satin base layer and then I will wipe on a couple of final finish coats to add back the shine. So I reckon another three undercoats, with a full day's drying in between, and then I'll do a slurry coat, followed by a couple of very light wiped coats. In between that I will be doing the slurry and buff coats for the neck to give me that silky-smooth organic feel. The fretboard won't be finished until the frets have been levelled, re-crowned and polished.

H'ok some updates! Started the body carve and shaping proper now the fingerboard is on. This one has plenty of shape and movement in the body so it's taking a while to balance out all the curves but it's getting there. I've rough cut the cavity cover and just need to sand and profile the edges, I'll be blending this in with the curves for a nice finish. The "groove" in the central wenge piece at the tail is so I can pop the bass between my legs when playing in a "classical" position, which makes it very comfy. Popped some white spirit on to clean away the grime and the ash is truly coming alive, the bass has only been sanded at 80grit so far so lots to go but the grain is lovely! Note the flat section on the upper horn this so I can lay my wrist flat against the bass while playing and that should help my sometimes awful "bass wrist" Lots of sanding to go and need to get the bridge and cavity cover sorted, oh and router the pickup slots in the cover, but well on its way. I messaged the seller asking for more details on originality etc., and was overwhelmed by the deluge of information he responded with: "Original covers but no original case " That's cleared everything up then. Now where did I put my chequebook?

Can I rejoin the BB club please? With this wee number: BBG4sII in white. Theres a story to this. My Dad and I visited sound control in glasgow around 96 looking for my first proper bass. I had been playing a cheap p bass copy which was OK but i wanted something a bit special. I picked this out, and my mum and dad got it for my christmas. Regrettably, around 6 years later, i thought it would be cool to put a bass trem on it, strip the paint, then defret it! I also painted a red stripe on it. I then sold it on ebay. Anyways, I've been hunting another one down for years for nostalgia sake, but it seems they mostly came in different colours other than white. This one came up on Facebook marketplace so had to go for it! Getting this in my hands make me regret mutilating the original even more! It's actually a very capable bass! feels great to play, and the hardware is solid. Sound-wise lets it down slightly. possibly because I'm used to having a mid EQ, but because it only has bass treble you're kinda limited - but it's easily giggable, which hopefully i will soon! I love it. brings back some seriously nice memories of jamming to tunes in my bedroom, through my hifi, with my big earphones. I wonder if theres some muscle memory going on which makes this feel better than it actually is, because I played this ALOT! haha

I think there's a very good reason that all decent quality graphite/carbon necked basses are expensive. If the part is made by a reputable builder, perhaps this is OK, but I doubt it is. If people's experience of buying 'replica' carbon framed 'Italian' bikes from China (aka Chinarello), whilst the manufacturers made/stole high precision moulds, the quality of the materials used left many people with broken bikes and in some cases quite serious injuries as the result. Graphite/carbon has the advantage of reducing the variation and unpredictability of materials such as wood and metal, but it requires high quality manufacturing and materials to do so. Take a good look at the weave on a Modulus neck or a Colnago or Pinarello bike, and then check out the weave on a cheap bass neck or Chinarello, perhaps equivalent to the difference between a newly cut off-cut and a selected, well-prepared and seasoned piece of quartersawn maple

I have had a clear out and got rid of the MTD KZ4 and the Rockbass Corvette to fund this; I have decided that i just love Ibanez SRs so when this 2005 SR1000 Prestige came up that clearly I needed it! It’s my first neck thru and although it’s a Korean made prestige, it’s as close to a proper prestige as I can afford lol. I still have my 1989 Fujigen SR800LE so now to decide which is the main player.

I can’t vouch for what Fender Custom Shop gear is like now, but I played and sold plenty of CS basses and guitars when I did time in Denmark Street, although admittedly that’s about 15 years ago now. A fair number of them looked and played great, but plenty of them were overly expensive ‘meh’ instruments that sold probably just because they were Custom Shop. I remember a lot of the Fender Road Worn stuff blew the Custom Shop gear away, and given CS prices, that shouldn’t happen. Mind, I own a Hofner and a Tanglewood and a Squier so wtf would I know? 😂

You want a decent priced CF neck bass, consider buying a used Peavey G-bass, or any bitsa with a Status neck.

Just checked and it is a legit 1962 number. Don’t know much more than that though. Ran it through DVLA out of curiosity and it’s not had an MoT recently.

Those are PowerSpan pickups & they are very bright in comparison to other humbuckers. IMHO they are The Best OEM pickups Ibanez has used since the PFR (Passive Full Range) that they put in the SR eXtreme (SRX).

Those caps are not supported and there will be a lot of strain on the legs as time goes on. Thos orange drop caps are nothing special apart from being orange. What worries me more is the ground wires soldered to the pots. It a nasty hangover from the original Fender wiring, and don't get me started on bending the lugs and soldering them to the pot case as an earth. That puts a twist on the wafer in the pot and tension on the rivet. I know I will get people saying its always been done that way, but no self-respecting electronics company would wire a circuit like that.

I think the price point vs what you actually get has gone over the tipping point now and I for one will not be buying another Fender CS - not from new anyway. I’ve had some CS’s that were definitely ‘meh’ and I still have a few that are excellent, but when you look around for what you can get for your money elsewhere, that’s what puts me off. I have a Shuker P being built at the moment that will be every bit as good and almost certainly better than a Fender CS for a lot less £’s. As others have said, the fancy colours, MHS’s, Ltd Ed’s and Sig Ed’s all look nice, but it’s all smoke and mirrors unless it feels great and sounds fantastic.

I've seen hundreds of vintage Fender's with bad grounding because of a rusted washer on the output jack... Sometimes, you can simply say : You are right, I didn't think about this. There's no shame.

Nearly finished all of my veroboard a for an effect I’ve been planning for a while; valve overdrive (with bipolar 12v supply) with a 3 band EQ, clean blend and an active tilt Eq on the clean side… will be boxing it up this weekend… … the plan was to sound like a DHA, but take up less space and be a touch more versatile. I’ll let you know.

There's a new DarkThrone album out on 25-June, I will definitely give it a listen. Other people like Funky Music, I like dark & heavy Music. People claim you can't dance to it, but I can get down to some Black Metal!

The early hoo-haa over them was very funny. The demo got a lot of kvlt interest and they released a 7" for Elisabeth, I think. Once they started getting popular and the pop sensibilities started to shine through, the kvlt elite started having a meltdown. I saw a video of one chap burning his copy of the 7" 😂 What a plonker. Anyway, when I think heavy, I usually think this album. Heavy as a very heavy thing.

I used to have a Rickenbacker 4001 copy made by Ibanez, a mate of mine that had recently bought a pucker 4001 Ricky tried mine and moaned that it played and sounded better than the real thing. I'm a firm believer in the power of budget basses, I've played and got rid of numerous Squier and Fender Jazz Basses over the years, during lockdown I bought a J&D Jazz Bass from DV247 for a little over £100, I stuck in some Wilkinson pickups, put on a high mass bridge from Northwest Guitars and strung it with Elites Detroits flatwounds....it's the best JB I have ever owned and it has some serious thump to it. It may not be anyone else's dream bass but it's now my main bass and I love it.

It's good for keeping in a car since it folds flat (the plate folds up and wheels fold in 90°), and you can also use it for things which aren't double basses; e.g. amp/cab.

You may have read my post on the Forum somewhere about the same issue I had with my P7? The pickguard was de-laminating in several areas, especially around the screw holes. I bought the bass from Thomann who very kindly gave me a Sire Marcus Miller gig bag as compensation. I was going to buy a gig bag anyway so with the money I bought a replacement pickguard from Jack’s Instrument Services in Manchester. The replacement red tort pickguard looks better than the stock one. The black pickguard does look nice on yours though, but on mine I think the red tort looks nicer with the white paint finish.

Open to any 'heavy' music...right up to the point where the vocalist sounds like they're clearing a fur ball from their throat, retching, sounding like they're almost about to vomit, clearing mucus from the throat or any other similar noises.
