  2. Well, I've had the bass for a few days now and I thought it would be nice to post some feedback. The top line is that the 'vision' I had for a custom built bass has been brought to wonderful life by Andy. The main design brief was for a Jazz-influenced 'working' 4 string that looked good but didn't scream 'look at me'. For me, a triple tick has been achieved. The light weight of the bass, at 6.5 pounds, was almost disconcerting when I first picked it up. But after playing it for a few days I ask myself 'why are most basses so heavy?'. I set Andy the challenge of block markers on a maple fret board. They look and feel beautiful. So far, I've only used the bass for personal playing and one band rehearsal. Through a Phil Jones Bass Cub the Norstrand NJ4 pickups I went for sound sweet although there's still some experimentation to be done on bass and amp settings. The whole attention to detail and quality of build is fantastic. Andy is a great craftsman to work with. He doesn't impose his views but will advise where things can be done better. Bottom line; a very happy customer.

  3. We did Rock City once, supporting Buzzcocks, definitely a highlight for me, I've seen so many huge bands play there, it was quite a honour to be on the stage. I love that venue!!

  4. I don't have any inside knowledge at all, so please don't let this start any rumours or anything but it occurs to me that if a manufacturer HAD to change a bridge for some reason (the old one is no longer made, cut costs, aesthetic reasons, supplier problems, import restrictions, a million other reasons) then a press release that says " we have new bridges because they sound better than the old ones!" is a lot more marketable than "Stephen from accounts forgot to pay our old supplier so we had to get different bridges. Don't worry, they sound fine!".

  5. Had to learn this track for a gig I did recently, so today I thought I'd record it with my very recently acquired NYC Sadowsky. Check it out here:

  9. Just to chime in on the volume of the trickfish .5k head. I have and use one. It's loud at 8ohms through the 210v cab. Cuts through two Marshall valve heads and 4x10 stacks and a hard hitting drummer. Actually it really compliments the sound providing an awesome low end for the guitars (80hz switch is amazing, it almost feels like there is s sub tone running underneath the main tone) At 4ohms with an 8x10 the amp is a monster. Never had to push it!

  10. Selling a beautiful XOTIC XJ-1t 5 Bass XOTIC XJ-1T 5 Model - 5-String / made 2010 (originally sold at Chicago Music Exchange) Body - Alder Color - Vintage White Neck - 22F Maple/Rosewood Frets - Jescar Silver Nickel (#6150Type) Pickups - Xotic Original Pickups Tuner - Hipshot Bridge - Xotic A Style Brass Controls: 1 Vol - 1 Balancer - 1 Tone - 3Band EQ (Push/Pull 1 st Vol for Active/Passive), Push Pull Passive Tonecontrol for activating HRI (Hum Reduction Inductor), Active Volume can be adjusted via trimpot on the back Preamp - Tri-Logic 2 Switches - 2 x Mini Switch (Mid Switch/Bright Switch) Hardware - Chrome Strap Button - Gotoh Weight - 4,7kg Extras - The round fretmarkers on the fretboard are made of Luminova, which glow in the dark. Case - Hiscox Hardshell Case The bass is in absolute mint condition, as if it would be brand new. Not a single scratch or bump anywhere. It is a beautiful, responsive and clear sounding instrument. A really lovely bass, if you are looking for a quality 5-string Jazz Bass, that actually sounds like a very good Jazz-Bass. I had this bass retrofit with the Xotic HRI (Hum Reduction Inductor). Since the pickups are single coil, they do pick up a lot of noise, when not used in middle position. But especially the neck pickup sounds freaking amazing just by itself, so I decided to dig into the pocket and get the optional hum reduction circuit installed (200.-£). It can be acrtivated/deactivated via push/pull of the passive tone control and it works absolutely perfect, completely hum free without any loss in sonic quality. Comes with a hardshell case by Hiscox The bass can be viewed and tried at the London Bass Gallery in Camden. All business will be dealt with by them respectively. Price (1,800.00 £) is non negotiable and absolutely no trades. The only reason why I am selling it, is that I have too many basses already and it never gets the attention it deserves.

  11. Epiphone Jack Casady bass, with hardcase. Its had some amendments from the original bass, as it was missing a few things when i arrived up it. Its had new machineheads, a new bridge, a new pickguard made, new pots and control knobs, new strap buttons, and a fresh set of strings. However, the pickup, transformer, and impedance selector are still original. There is some damage by the pickguard due to it being left alone missing pieces for so long, the bracket rubbed against the body. No trades, and feel free to try it out, I'm in New Brighton, on the Wirral. I can post, but its up to you whether or not you want to also pay the insurance on it.

  12. Rare-as-hens'-teeth lefty Eminence, with massive thanks to @Happy Jack for his generosity and organisational skills in a. ordering it as a pressie; b. having it secretly delivered to his little sis in Pasadena; c. flying both of us to Pasadena on holiday, and collecting the parcel and taking it with us on the flight home. Since it was packed in a golf club case, I was none the wiser until we finally opened the parcel at home in London. Kudos. The bass is NOT as red as these photos show, despite my desperate attempts at colour correcting in Photoshop. It's more of a brownish-red tobacco colour. I feel I have finally graduated from beginner's upright to a slimmer version of the real thing! 😄😍

  13. While I don't have any current love for Laney, a long time ago I used to run a rig - 2x15, 2x10, big old DP150 head (I couldn't afford the DP300). I'd never loved whatever was passing for the affordable/budget end of bass playing back then...people just too obsessed with Marshalls to be honest. Anyhow this was my set up. It was furiously loud and I never ran it more than about halfway.

  16. good evening all had a look at the lacquer today (impatient) and decided it was hard enough to work on so I put it back together, have a couple of issues like I cocked up the wiring, the tone is like another volume I must of put a wire wear it shouldn't be ill check it out later, I have to fit a black jack socket when it comes so ill check the wiring then. On the hole I am very pleased how it turned out sounds luvly with them flats on don't know about the tone lol,

  17. The pickguard has arrived, and very nice it is too. Nice touch to sign and date it on the back The second picture shows it on the as yet, un-yellowed body, so it looks a little bit odd, but it's a nice fit and when compared to the black one from my son's Westfield copy, there's quite a bit of difference in fit. I'm so glad I waited rather than use the black one to create an un-yellowed patch, as the different profile would have caused a problem

  18. Keep trying to snag a gig there, spoken to Ben many times but just can't get us in the door. Last time I played there was as a 16 year old in the upstairs function room, pretty sure it kicked off then too.... Our favourites are the Bowling Green in Horwich, Steamhouse in Sale (a 1 minute drive home always helps) and the brilliantly named Polished Knob in Todmorden. All 3 are favourites for the same reason - the folk there love a live band and aren't shy to sing & dance along from the start. Makes it so much easier to get into the gig when there's a bit of feedback from the punters.

  19. Ah, of course - I did see that. I suppose you were so dazzled by it, that you couldn't see him clicking "buy it now" on his laptop!

  20. Here`s to hoping the "modern" sound-person doesn`t add in a huge kick-drum sound to the mix. With bass-lines/playing like PPs would be a great shame to trample all over that with this modern phenomenon.

  26. Second weekend gig with the Wirebirds yesterday, when we were the final band of the 3 day Follyfest in Faringdon (market town between Swindon and Oxford). The rain managed to hold off, and we had a blast playing there (again - our 6th year). I would have taken the Alembic, but as the weather looked rather dodgy, I took the Gibson instead, its second gig in the year I've owned it, and to be fair, it deserves to be taken out more often, it acquitted itself very well. No idea what the backline was, it was supplied by the organisers and I just plugged in, tweaked the EQ and played. Someone who was there (obviously!) sent us this pic:

  30. Now sold. Here we have a pair of EMG 40 CSX, I had them listed on here a couple of years ago but didn't get the right trade option so ended up keeping them. I've now switched them out for some Nordys so only looking for a sale to recoup some cash, no trades thanks. Both in great nick with quick connect, two signal/power wires included with quick connect one end and solder at the other. Pickups priced at 80 quid delivered, I can optionally include a set of 25k balance/vol/tone pots for 15 quid. EMG say.. "The EMG 40CSX is a big sounding modern humbucker for players looking to tame the higher frequencies in their bass tone. The two coils loaded with ceramic magnets and steel poles provide warmth and punch with a smooth top end and plenty of output. With the on-board X Series preamp, this pickup takes on added dynamic response and touch sensitivity, giving it a feel that is similar to a passive pickup while maintaining the sonic range of an active. This model uses an extended housing that is 4 inches (102mm), perfect for five string basses"

  34. Cool. That's very tasty for saying that you started with offcuts from a loft conversion. It's quite common to having a little snagging list to sort out. You have an output so with luck it is a simple case of retracing your wiring one connection at a time.

  36. What an amazing present Sylvia Bluejay! Did Happy Jack win the lottery? Or has he just bought himself two new basses? Did you think he'd taken up golf? Yes, Eminence DB's are pretty amazing. I hadn't realised they did a left handed version - great Hope you have a wonderful new bass year

  37. Move on Not done a huge amount today, just finished of carving the necks, oh to be that slim! Even a bit of work with the rasp around the heel, most of the general shaping was with spokeshaves and a block plane with a little bit with a cabinet scraper once in a while when I needed more control of what I was removing when the grain was adverse and only wanted to tear no matter how I worked, sometimes a problem with laminated bits

  40. Next is to get the tool tray back from the Revered Parent who has bored the middle out by 0.10mm (4 thou for the oldies 😛). I was expecting to do it, but he went ahead and did it, and fit it. Which means lifting the head off again. Hopefully for the last time, unless I move it! It needs a new handle for the quill spider but that's just running a die up the existing one that has broken off, before I got it and fortunately not in the hole. It was bought mostly because the ability to drill perpendicular holes in things on an ad hoc basis without going for a 20 minute drive down the A5 is very useful, and I want to build a flightcase. Parcelpost could be done, it weighs something in order of 150kg and all the couriers won't touch it without a pallet. Or you could drive for an hour to use it 😛

  41. I have Hipshot Kickass saddles fitted to my Badass II on my '86 MIJ Fender P. It's class. I opted for brass saddle inserts. You move them sideways and they lock in place. They're also cut quite deep so you won't need as much of a shim as you would with a Badass. I sounds amazing and it's engineered really well with good materials.

  44. Lovely bass, and I imagine the GAS was increased when we all saw Aud's Eminence at the double bass bash in April. That event convinced me that I needed a "real" upright to go with my Yamaha SLB 200 and so I ended up with "Marilyn". Well done.

  48. A lot of these copies are made in factories where the people making them have probably never seen a real one, they can't help but build them to a better standard which gives the game away! 😁

  49. Mine has to be a favourite place I used to play as I don't gig anymore..... Rock City Nottingham... Iconic Rock venue, just about every famous Band you can mention has played there at some point. The Stereophonics tribute band I was in has played the main stage there 5 times. It was an all day charity event ( I'm far from famous 😉) but the crowd loved us. it was always a sell out (2450 capacity) raising thousands of pounds for the relevant charity but the best bit was the on stage sound. There was a front of house soundman AND at the side of the stage, a sound man that just gave you a monitor mix ...he was BRILLIANT ….anything you wanted in your monitor at sound check was delivered in seconds. I know the combination of Tribute band and Charity gig is an anathema to many on here but they were the gigs of my life and I would do them again, at the drop of a hat , If only I was well enough.
