One day they'll realise that a young kid hankering for a Ric, would buy a Ric copy to start with and would dream of a real Ric when he gets better/older/richer. But he can't buy a fake Ric so he buys a Squier P bass, then when he gets better/older/richer....he buys an Am Stnd Fender P bass.....

For sure. In the long run, the only losers in this trade is the Rickenbacker company, not you guys who have done an outstanding job in providing a real hub for the people. Bless you all, keep up the good work.

Here's an indoor pic taken on my phone, which is more how it looks away from direct sunlight. In artificial light it looks even lighter. I'm sure at a gig under stage lights it would look like 'a white bass'. Either way, I'm pleased with the look and even more pleased with the Herrick dual-coil. These basses cost less than £100 from Thomann, but you can appreciate that for the money I've spent overall, I could probably have picked up a very playable and good-looking new or used bass. But I wouldn't know what I now know about pickups, refinishing, how a bass is put together and all those little related bits of random knowledge picked up during the process.

The crowdfunding page ended today and I would just like to once again thank each and everyone of you for going beyond the call of duty and making a donation to this fund, I never thought we would raise this much to help against Funkinshui's and my losses after being ripped off by he who shall not be mentioned YET. You have raised a mind blowing grand total of £620 pounds and have restored our faith in humanity, just to mention once again, I was the end of the chain in this fraud and I ended up buying the bass face to face with the fraudster, which was his biggest mistake as the police couldnt link it to him. But seeing as I can id the guy without doubt and we know who he really is he should get whats coming to him. I have requested an update from CID and will let you know whats going on as things progress. I being the end of the chain would of recieved nothing and lost all my money. Thanks to Funkinshui being so genorous and offering to split the loss with me and you guys suggesting we open a crowd funding page, we will loose a lot less than we expected. I cant really put into words how grateful I am for your generosity, Basschat is awesome and the community is like no other I have been part of, I tip my hat to every one of you, thank you all once again

We all know bass: an instrument that is in every kind of actual and older music. But bass guitar is sometimes underrated as an instument. Many people say that they can't listen to it, when maybe they can't recognise it. Bass guitar can be used to create the harmonies of a song, but also to write beatiful melodies and solos. It's the link between the drums and other intruments like guitar, piano, trumpetes... All in all, it's a crutial instrument. I've always had a love/hate relationship with Ricks: I'm primarily a guitar player ... so I've never had to live with one on a day to day basis for playing. My experience comes from playing one occasionally, and in spending 40 years repairing instruments and six years rewinding numerous Rick pickups. I adore the look, and the mid range growl and clang, but ergonomically as a player I couldn't use one all the time. The Issue I see over and over again are dead Rick pickups, ones that have mysteriously just stopped working. When I rewound my first Rick bass pickup I discovered the design fault that leads to failure. Dead centre of the image is a sawn off brass screw that is driven through the bobbin and .... The super delicate 44awg wire is soldered directly to that screw ... no insolation, no strain relief. If the screw gets loose ... which the original soldering can make it ... it twists and breaks the wire. The simple fix is a short insulated 'pig tail' that has the core wire soldered to that ... a kink is put in the wire to allow for a bit of movement ... and the whole shooting mach is taped before winding. Problem solved ... but why oh why can't Rickenbacker do something about it themselves?

Ah, I see, and I think we all agree. Things are what they are, though, and get dealt with as best we can. It's a shame, certainly, but the threats were quite real enough to require this action. Never mind; there's plenty of other basses to be drooled over in the marketplace.

My new custom overdrive has arrived. All in all it is two complete Nightfall units, with all controls on each channel, and the possibility to use A or B or cascade A into B. Also switchable via stereo tele jack from my Boss ES8 switcher. Sounds very nice!

+ a lot of numbers So many people seem to spend ages laboriously taking the paint/primer/sealing coat off and then another age trying to cover/fill the woodgrain and prime it to get it back to where it was when they started. Leave the original finish if in good nick, a quick rub with some scotchbrite or Micromesh or the like and you're good to go. I really love that colour BTW, I seem to share your love of cream basses, I paint a colour to be different to all the cream ones and then wish I'd done it cream.

It was a lovely day here so I hobbled out into the garden and decided to do what I could with bits on my knee, which wasn't much but still it all helps. I finish sanded the faces of both headstocks and sprayed them with nitro sanding sealer from a rattle can, I couldn't have got my spray gear out to save my life but that is fine. After a couple of coats I glued the fret boards on. Finally I pulled the tape off the second body and scraped the top of the bindings flush. I have already fully scraped the first but I couldn't do the second as I would need to have the body secured in a vice and that means standing and I can't do that., That's me now until after the weekend I suspect, we're off out on Friday until Saturday so maybe Sunday depending on how I feel

This is quite simply, the most important part of bass playing.

It’s the drums that make you tap your feet, the bass that makes you swing your hips. To my knowledge it’s only Penguins that tap their feet as a come-on.

If price is an issue while you're trying strings out, you'll find the D'Addarios £10-15 cheaper than the DRs...

I've just moved the Oil City pickup into my surf green partscaster.. and it sure looks purty!

Glad that it has been sorted out, even if it had been fixed the trust and shineyness has already gone. Took me a bit of a while after the strap button screw sheared off on mine before I was happy again (which I now am)

It's obvious the boy's very talented. But also quite staid, despite wishing to appear the opposite. He's trying very hard to be different, but only manages to be a tiny bit different. His piano playing, while very good, is not in the same league as other precocious talents such as Hiromi Uehara either in melody, rhythm or inventiveness. Did anybody say Bobby Crush? 😁 Still, I'd much rather him than much wetter dinner jazz, or The Smiths!

Hi Basschat! I've been playing bass since the early '90s - in bands 'til mid-2000s, gigging a fair bit. Bit of a break until last year when I joined a (very) amateur band which didn't work out sadly Not sure of direction now - just know that I enjoy learning new things on the bass (and buying gear!). Will see how it goes whether to find a new band. I've really enjoyed reading the forums for the past few months - a lot of knowledge and kindness out there. Hugh

Today I picked up my new custom zoot bass from Mike Walsh and... oh my! firstly, the workmanship is stunning. Every aspect is top drawer. It was great to be able to specify the exact neck profile and radius of the ebony board and mike absolutely nailed it. Although I decided to do unlined on the board facia I’m pleased I got lines added to the top of the fretboard to give me a helping hand. The ebony board is so thick too! Really makes it sing. its fitted with a Noll 3 band active preamp and amazing pups from Harry Haussell. The neck is a 70s jazz and the bridge is a music man with a jazz coil sitting between the two mm coils. The amount of switching options is ridiculous... it’ll probably take as long to get to grips with the electronics as it will to learn to play it in tune! 😂 if you’re thinking of getting a custom build do yourself a favour and have a chat to mike!

Chunky and around 42mm at the nut. Very playable, but it's definitely a P neck. If you're a Jazz bass fan, you probably won't like it much.

I wondered if the transformer got its own seat with meal and in-flight entertainment for that price!

put the guitar together today just a mock-up to make sure everything fitted and I was pleasantly surprized that it all fitted ok, the pups were a bit tight and I think I will need a little shim in the neck pocket or sand a bit of the bottom depends on how lazy I feel, I will take it apart tomorrow and try to get a coat of lacquer on it. got to put another hanger on the wall now.
