  1. Well…after a bit of a wait, and a bit of Wayne Carini style “it’s all about the chase” behaviour… A mate had bought a 70’s one on a whim and I was absolutely smitten with it…but he wouldn’t sell. Off I set on my little search…found via the Shergold owners group on Facebook. Original 1980 case too. its very clean overall with some edge marks. Not bad for 44 years old.

  2. Warwick Streamer 1986. £2000 This is from the hand built golden era of Warwick and is an absolute beauty. It’s in stunning condition for it’s 38 years. All original (except one replacement knob and the battery cover both of which are later Warwick genuine replacements). Preamp is one of the sought after Vlado hand built preamps. Pickups are the exceptionally rare and sought after Seymour Duncan with dip switches fitted at the factory as a new option and unlike many, they are in full working order. Super light, super slim neck and body. It’s a joy to play, being recently set up by Dave Wilson. I’d always wanted one of these since I started playing in ‘86 but the neck is just too slim and I don’t find it works for me as I’m used to wide, five string necks. Happy to keep it as a piece of wonderful wall art but it should be played really. I've owned it since around Dec 2021. I don't have a case for it, but I'm sure I could find a generic hard case in the loft if you need one. I'm a long time and known Warwick user on the forums. (I also have '91 Thumb NT, '03 Infinity NT and Corvette Ltd ) Happy for a chat or come up and play it - I’m in the Tyne Valley, UK. 3. ... My loss, your win! I feel stupid selling this and would love to keep it but I gotta offload for inbound gear. Bought this beauty on a whim due to my love for Stingrays and the prospect of a new band. As bands go, they want to go heavier with dropety dropped Z tunings so a Dingwall 5 string is replacing this. I'd genuinely love to keep this and I bought it end of January, so there you go, 2 months old bass - tuners and finish etc is perfect. Roasted maple, new strings too, gigbag etc. 3.9kg and roasted maple neck. Please ask if you need more pictures!

  4. I bought this bass today. Luckily I live a bit nearer Perth (area) than perhaps most of you do. Absolutely zero issues and very good condition in general - the seller just probably isn’t a much of a gearhead compared to most Basschat people (he was a bit taken aback when I explained exactly how the controls work, though he had owned it for quite few years). I used borrowed Alembics on two Whitesnake albums and a few other sessions, and owned a new 20th Anniversary model briefly before finances became tight and it had to go.

  7. I will have the last word, thanks. How f'n dare you cast aspersions about me. Please find and quote me where I have ever "diss(ed) all those classic tunes". "People like me"? That would require some knowledge of the kind of person I am, of which you have none. You know the square root of hee haw about me, my music or how it is/was made, but thanks for telling me how crap it is and to pack it in because there's no point. In fact, everyone go home - all valid music has been already created, you're wasting your time, because @diskwave, the arbiter of taste has decreed it thus. Have you any idea how stupid you sound? Read it back - you're being a complete moron, running around in this thread like a bull in a china shop, accusing people of all sorts, argumentatively disagreeing with anyone who has a different opinion to you. You're forum poison right now. Why can't you just accept that people having a different opinion to you is not an attempt to invalidate your opinion, which you are more than entitled to have BTW. You like the old days. Good for you, I like 'em too. There are people who disagree with you, and guess what - they're not wrong either.

  8. *FOR SALE* De Gier Bebop PJ Hybrid *FOR SALE* Re-Priced - £2250 Bebop No.163 is a hybrid of Bebop 60 (AKA Bebop Classic) and Bebop 70 (now known as Bebop) specs, with a P pickup and some other added extras. It was made for me by Sander in November 2017, and as such I am the sole owner in it's lifetime thus far. The bass has been an absolute joy to play as it's an extremely versatile instrument with it's pickup configuration, D-tuner, and killswitch (really helpful with having separate bridge and neck vols!). The De Gier Bebop preamp is by far the most natural sounding onboard preamp I have ever heard in an active bass (I have played active Fenders, Zons, Mtds, Lulls and more) and I spent a long time trying to find the most balanced PJ set I could. The dual tone mid switch let’s you toggle between a more traditional 60’s sounding mid range, and a more scooped 70’s sounding mid range. All in all the bass has a super punchy sound, with some lovely sweet highs. My particular favourite settings are br. vol 100%, ne. vol 90%, 60’s tone 65%, b boost 40%, tr boost 50%. A very tasteful and very musical sounding bass that is not overrun by it’s electronics. Due to the shape of the neck, you can really fly around on the bass (if that's your thing) and the slightly tapered body sits nicely. The weight is around 9-9.5lbs, but I've got no way getting any more accurate than that at present- in any case, it's not heavy at all, and it balances perfectly. It's been gigged a fair amount, but is in extremely good condition, aside from a few marks, mostly caused by strap rubbing on the flat finish (all pictured). If I'm honest, it still feels like it's fresh from Sander's workshop every time I pick it up. It'll be a hard one to let go, for sure... but I tend to use fivers right now, and it's just not getting played. Please feel free to ask me any questions, should you have any. Bebop 163 Year: 2017 Body: Alder, aged white matte finish (matching headstock) Neck/Fingerboard: One piece bird's eye maple, 21 slim frets Fretboard Inlays: Black mother of pearl dots Tuners: Black Hipshot UL clovers with D tuner Bridge: Black De Gier/ETS Pickups: Aguilar P-60 and J-HC (in 60's position) Preamp: De Gier Bebop 70's - bass, treble, dual tone, bridge vol, neck vol (active/passive toggle) Extras: Killswitch, Dunlop Straploks

  12. Ah, this thread has really made me laugh... 😂 And there was me thinking all these years that bass players, of all the muso stereotypes, were the respectful, thoughtful, intelligent, accepting Folk ... But no. What a moany bunch of hateful, hobbity, gollumy bass players we all are.... 😁🤣 Having said that, and especially after earlier mention of the awful cod-reggae forced on the entire worId by UB40, I can't believe we've got 8 pages into this thread without no one mentioning the entire back catalogues of: Jamiroqouai and Vulfpeck Hearing 'music' (potential Trade Descriptions Act warning here) by either of those 2 cod-funk peddlers leaves me utterly, utterly cold and makes me despair... Just my opinion of course, but a I reckon that a drum machine, a sequencer and a vocoder left alone in a darkened studio for a couple of days, could create music with more emotion than either of those 2 faux-funk bands.. And to continue in this grumpy vein, I also think most solo albums by 'virtuoso' bass players should be consigned to Room 101. Right, I'll get my coat now and exit quickly....

  13. Hello all, it’s with a heavy heart I am listing my Ashdown ctm300 and cl610. ctm 300 made in uk, 300 watts of all tube goodness, cl610 cave made in uk 4 ohm cab with roqsolid cover. this rig sounds downright phenomenal, as you would expect from Ashdown. I was using this for my old rock band which is now no longer going, so I’m playing much quieter now. This needs to be out with someone who will use it. both head and can have been hogged so have some small scuffs etc but otherwise all good. Excuse the instagram photo but these are currently packed away in my garage and will get more pics for anyone interested. happy to split if someone was interested. Potentially interested in part trades and sensible offers

  14. I recently collected this piece, having won it in a proper auction. It could be a very late '63 but is more probably very early '64 as it doesn't have the raised logo. It's a feather weight, as it's hollow. One volume control is seized but I'm going to try and take it apart and repair it. It needs a tuner ferrule and a screw for one machine head I've plugged it in and it has that sound. I may name it Paul, after my late brother who was born in '64

  15. The monster lives.... I've jury rigged pickup mounts for the neck and bridge and wired in some choc blocks and a nice Fender Jazz set of controls to see if the pickups work, do they work suspended and how they sound in this position. I could change the position but the pole spacing seems to indicate that this is where they need to go Blow me down with a feather but it actually sounds quite good. Nothing is held permanently in place, so I couldn't even pick the body up as the wiring would have fallen apart. It also looks crap in the photos but it doesn't look that bad in real life. I now know it works and it doesn;t sound bad. No copper lining so some hum, but not a great deal. I also couldn't remember which one of the wires went in which direction, so the pickups might be out of sync (well it worked for Peter Green). The aim here was to check: 1. The pickup cases held the pickups OK. - Seems OK 2. Suspending the pickups from the pick guard works. - No issues that I can see or hear. 3. The wiring works. - It works but no idea if it is in sync or out of sync. 4. The earthing strap to the bridge works - OK 5. I have a control panel that works - Seems OK. 6. Position of the pickups is right. - Given the pole positions, can't see any option to be honest. Now I now know it works (phew), I can focus on getting it finished for the NW and Scottish bass bash on May 18th. Next steps. 1. Reprint the bridge adapter base plate as the last one pulled a nut out, so only seven nuts are holding it on. 2. Reprint the neck module base plate as it has stuff in thats not needed and might vibrate. 3. Make a proper pickguard as opposed to the stuff above. 4. Design the control panel to hold the controls. I'll probably drop the chrome plate as it's a little too big for the space. I might leave the choc blocks as they make assembly a whole lot easier. Thanks Rob

  17. A huge thanks for all those providing suggestions and taking the time to post links etc. It reminds me why I joined the forum way back in 2007; it's such a helpful and friendly community. For those interested, I've gone ahead and placed an order for one of these Ibanez models https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/gsrm20_2y_06.html. Although it will take a couple of months to arrive I am sure she will absolutely love it! Whilst not available in first choice colour pink, purple has been confirmed as being a "second best colour" - so all good there! The plan will be to see how she does, then move onto a full-size body / weight / scale length version in a few years time; much like I did when I started the double bass around the same age. I will update again once it's arrived and I've set it up. Thanks again, Greg

  19. I'm working on the inside carve. At the moment I'm doing it all with a gouge. It's probably a bit small (Sweep 5, 18mm in case anyone is interested), but it's an utter utter joy. The grain is tricky. The middle section (marked in pencil) runs opposite to the areas either side. I wake up sweating in the middle of the night just thinking about tearout.....

  21. NBD yesterday. Sire U5 fretless from Thomann. Quite a lot vested in this for me, as I sold two basses to raise the cash for this. Suffice it to say, it was worth it. So far I am very pleased with the little Sire. Others have reviewed the fretted U5 and as far as I can tell, this is identical save the black plastic inserts where the frets would normally go. It seems to be really well made for this price point. Fit and finish is spot on right down to the set up. It perhaps needs a bit more relief on the neck but that is easily fixed with a tweak of the truss rod. The neck has a lovely feel with beautifully rolled edges and an extremely thin matte coating on the back (gloss on the board). At the moment I can’t think of anything I would want to change on it. Even the OEM flat wound strings are good. They have a nice feel and suit the instrument well. I’m not sure what brand they are: not the usual D’Addarios, as they have blues silks at both ends and plain ball ends. Time will tell how the hardware lasts but it seems perfectly acceptable. The machine heads are identical to Northwest Guitars own brand vintage style, which are sold as an upgrade for Squiers, etc, so I am hoping they will last a bit. The bridge is chunkier than your average Squier ash tray and the ridged saddles are a nice touch. It can also be strung through. Unfortunately, it has an unusual screw at each corner mounting system, which makes upgrading a little less straight forward. As can be seen in the picks, it has a flamed maple top with edge binding and a plain painted brown back. It’s a carved top, which stops it from being a completely slab body. It gives it an arm contour of sorts but no belly cut. Viewed from the side the profile seems to do the reverse and actually bulge at the belly but it is comfortable on a strap nevertheless. Despite the maple top and binding it seems very light because the body is quite thin front to back. I haven’t had a chance to weigh it but I would guess around 7.5 lbs. I would certainly put this on your list, if you are looking for a short scale fretless. It is reasonably priced and nicely made. Bizarrely, it cost £40 more than the fretted version at Thomann.

  22. Folks. I thought I would tie up the loose ends on this. I got my bass back today with the reprofiled neck. I had a couple of fitting sessions with Tony on the way, to make sure he got it right. I find this much more comfortable to play even though the nut width is now around 39mm, not quite as narrow as I had originally expected but it works. The rear profile is much more Jazz like up to about the ninth fret and then starts to flatten a bit. It has also been refretted with narrower and lower vintage style frets allowing the action be lowered a bit more. As per my request, the back of the neck is finished in 2 light coats of clear matte varnish. This doesn’t seem to react with the original nitrocellulose 🤞. All that work came in at around 2/3rds of the original quote for a new bespoke neck! On the subject of nut widths, it prompted me to measure the nut on my other basses. I was surprised how much it can differ from the published specs. My Nordstrand Acinonyx is 38.15mm against the spec of 36mm. My Maruszczyk Elwood (32”) is 37mm against the spec of 38mm (close). All Parts ‘51 precision neck on a bitsa 43mm (just about correct). The prize for manufacturing accuracy goes to my (new yesterday) Sire U5 fretless, which is spot on 38mm.

  24. Mine has landed. It was a showroom model and Andertons called me to explain this. They offered me a set of strings. The bass arrived and it’s lovely. It weighs 8.6lb and although I’m not normally a fan I love the burst. There is however a shallow scratch near the nut. No strings were forthcoming either. Andertons have offered me £30 and strings. I’ve asked for a set of LaBella 760s and gone with that. I suspect I can sort the scratch. The bridge saddles were in orbit! I’ve turned the screws down over 4 turns and there’s more to go. It sounds lovely, a really woody P bass tone. No noise from the bass either. I like that the body resonates when you play. The base instrument is very sound and I’m making no apologies for modding the hell out of it. It’ll be my personal 54P in my 70th year. So, plans are, bridge, tuners, pickup, electrics and scratch plate. The whole behemoth. I could set up a mod thread I guess. The pick-up is going to be something quite different.

  26. Hello All, I would like to let you know about the excellent service I received from Jack at Jack’s Instrument Services in Manchester. I recently bought a 2nd hand Alusonic Django bass from a well known shop based in the Midlands. Unfortunately upon receipt the strings were dead and required changing, the result of this being an A string that rattled and buzzed quite badly. To be honest I should have sent the bass back but decided it would probably cost me money along with the degree of risk of sending an expensive instrument back by carrier. Upon searching google for a suitable instrument repairer I found Jack’s in Cheetham Hill, messaged him and he replied promptly telling me it was very likely the nut on my bass was incorrectly cut and he was confident he could remedy the issue. I dropped my bass in earlier today and guess what, Jack was spot on with his diagnosis. He was able to craft and fit a new buffalo horn nut which blended in perfectly on my black bass and carry out a really professional set up which resulted in the bass playing perfectly, not a buzz or a rattle in evidence. All for what can be described as a reasonable price all things considered. Suffice to say if you’re in or near Manchester and you need a bass or guitar repairing or setting up, look no further. Jack will be able to help get your treasured instrument back to its absolute best. Highly recommended!!

  27. Wow, now that is a huge error. At least my B6 talks to Zoom guitar Lab so swapping patches from B1 Four is easy. It's hard to believe that the Zoom techies overlooked a desktop solution. I did have some GAS to build a new pedal board around a B2 Four, but your confirmation has doused that fire until a desktop solution appears. Thanks John

  38. Here is my 2018 Ric 4003s in near mint condition. It plays really well with no neck or fret flaws, truss rods work as they ought to and frets have no discernible wear - it looks like new. Bought early this year as a back up but as I’m playing my EBMM Sterling US almost exclusively this is not being touched. It has a custom treble pickup bezel fitted but the original and cover are included. It weighs under 3.9kgs and balances well. The maple board has a nice stripe/flame to the wood. It’s a UK sale/trade only sorry and I’d prefer to deal face to face if possible. Similar to my P Bass Special I’d prefer a trade or part trade - cash either way depending on value. Please don’t contact me if what you want to trade isn’t on this list : EBMM US Sterling or Stingray Shortscale, 70’s Fender Precision with a maple board, Fender US Musicmaster or 70’s Fender Mustang with maple neck. I’d prefer a trade to a sale to be honest - the price is much less than I paid and a big saving on new if you can find one in this finish. Now £1625 cash on pickup or £1650 posted in the UK via PayPal friends and family. That’s a good price for a Ric in this condition. Thanks. Note I’ve added pics with the new chrome finished bezel fitted - this prevents you catching your thumb on the treble surround and is a better fit. The one in the first pictures is perspex on a chrome plate (Retrovibe parts I believe) whereas the one now fitted uses the original Ric treble surround and fits more snuggly.

  43. I've never been one for getting flavour of the month gear, preferring to get what is either decent and affordable at the time or what just personally appeals to me regardless. I'm not out to impress other bass players, it's all about what makes me happy! Recently I bought 2 Laney 2x10 cabs from their ebay shop. They cost me £200 each and I don't think the Nexus cabs were cheap items when they were the current bass gear. The spec certainly isn't cheap, and is on a par with those new Ampeg VB cabs aside from my Laneys handle more power at 400 watts each, a bit heavier at 17kg, I think better looking, and certainly much cheaper! As I grew up in the Black Country, it's also nice to be supporting the brand also. 😎

  44. Got a gig on Thursday. Headlining for our second gig, so I'm not expecting a lot of punters (I'd be happy to be pleasantly surprised though!). It's all good gig experience for the band. Not entirely sure about the promoter. We carpet bombed them all when we started looking for gigs and he seems keen, but I don't think he understands the genre that well. Also got one in Newport later in the month which should be good. We're covering for another band that have also organised us a gig in Swindon for July too.

  45. McCartney. I love the Beatles, but when I listen to McCartneys bass lines, with a few honourable exceptions, I hear simplistic approach, ill considered note lengths, a lack of groove and precision. I think he was a better guitarist than bass player. The fact that he comes across as Mr Fake, and he's an arrogant prick in real life (I said good morning to him at a sailing club once, and he told me to f*** off and stop hassling him), probably doesn't help
