NBD - Hohner Precision Bass, made in Japan, I "think" late 70's judging by some other online posts but I have no evidence, serial number starts with 86####. Believe it was unused for many years, broken nut which I have now replaced as well as new strings/intonation sorted. It has the original bridge cover, replacement thumb rest taken from my Harley Benton PB50, Pup cover is long gone, sounds decent. No clue on value or rarity, bought for £50, for now its a keeper.8 points

I will then join four other doomed musicians holding dreadful, unsuitable instruments and will be condemned to play "Mustang Sally" to a half full room of bored partygoers, until the end of time.8 points

Dep gig with a band called 'Gettin Even' last night. I was in Gettin Even when it was a duo way back in the mists of time (about 25 years ago). I depped with them a few weeks ago when it was a trio with singer, singer/guitarist and backing tracks. Last night there was me depping on bass, the drummer from my other band depping on drums and the singer/guitarist. It was ok - the audience were of advanced age but loved the more modern, rocky stuff. Dancing was reserved for the rock 'n' roll and bluesy songs. At half time the Ent Sec came in and told us we could turn up! In more than 30 years of playing that's the first time I've been told that. I used my short scale Gretsch Electromatic through a Zoom B1-4 (just giving me a basic compressor sound, a chorus patch and a slightly phased driven patch) into my Peavey MiniMax and out through a Warwick 10" cab and my TE 10" cab. First live outing for the Gretsch - sound was a bit woolly but nice to play. IEM for vocals and to help manage the onstage sound.8 points

A wedding gig with the originals band. This one down south in the New Forest. Another wedding I should say as I was with them way oop north in a marquee last week as well. Odd booking a band for a party when no one will know any of the songs. And sure enough the only dancing to happen happened when we played the couple of covers in the set. I shouldn't complain, I got paid and it was an early start so I was home by 9.45pm. But it goes against my grain to have a captive audience, up for a good time, and not give them what they want. Used a mixed rig of Barefaced, Ashdown and Bugera with Reverend basses, and no effects. The Bugera is the one with the tube pre and I'm starting to come to terms with it. The gain, volume and master controls threw me at first. I realise now the first volume knob after the gain allows me to hammer the gain into distortion, while keeping the volume down and allowing me to use the master for overall volume. Oh and the compressor on this amp is one of the best I've ever used.7 points

We had a booked gig for tonight in a Village Hall that fell through so contacted a local pub and suggested we come along and play for drinks and a hat passed around. We posted on Facebook and quite a few villagers turned up and we got paid too.7 points

The band I'd been playing in until the end of last year, when the singer started having mental health issues, finally played again last night. The singer and keyboard player had separate slots at a beer festival, which they decided to combine, and I decided to turn up too and see if they wanted me to join in. When I got there, I found that the percussionist (who suffered a heart attack a little while ago, after we'd last gigged together) had also turned up. So, completely unrehearsed, and with an interval of over a year since we'd last played together (the percussionist was double booked for the last gig so we'd got a dep in), we weighed in. Went down an absolute storm. It does help that a large part of the audience already knew us and liked us. I'm hoping that this isn't going to be a one-off. We all really enjoyed ourselves.7 points

After chatting to someone here about ACGs in general via an ad I listed then pulled, I have decided to do a very hard thing and start letting go of my basses. As some of you know I have left the UK permanently to live and work in California. Basses are not easy to travel with so Ive had to leave some behind. Crated in prep for cargo shipping to me but I thinks its safe to say it won't be any time soon. The bass itself is on ACG’s website model number 0257. https://acguitars.co.uk/project/0257-salace-e-type-headless-5/ Not getting the playing time that it deserves. An excellent lightweight chambered 8lb (just shy of 3.65kg) bass that’s super comfortable to play with its 30.5” scale length, suits E-C but I have it set up with heavy gauge hex core boomers and played lovely in B-G as well, The preamp is amazing, so versatile and great as a studio tool to get loads of tones, passive bypass gives a great natural tone as well. Preamp is the ACG DFM 5k/AP which is the full dual filter modular with push pull mid boost for both pickups, passive/active switch with tone roll off pot as well. Here are the specs. Body wood is Alder Top wood is Eucalyptus burl which is stunning Neck is Wenge and Ash Fingerboard is ACG’s signature acrylic impregnated Wenge for superior stability with luminescent inlays which glow on a dark stage and UV blacklight. Weight is 8.01lbs Bridge pickup is the AGC SB single coil and the neck is the ACG FB humbucker. Hipshot hardware. 17.5mm spacing (from memory it might be 17 -- check with Alan) There is 1 very small blemish on the back behind the lower horn I’ll include a close up picture. Comes with the original semi hard shell case. I ship locally and internationally tracked and signed in one of my custom made wooden crates. I don't think they're being singled out as such but speaking from personal experience of BD as well as making a sweeping generalisation based on some of the posts in this thread, it seems to me that BD's unique take on customer service is arguably more variable than most shops, be they selling music equipment or anything else. In my own experience the level of customer service I have received from them has varied from excellent through to condescending, to apathetic incompetence. IF you go to one of the big box shifters and deal with the 12 year old Saturday boy on minimum wage then you might adjust your expectations accordingly. But when you go to a specialist shop like BD you, or at least I do, expect service that's a little more consistent. I neither want nor expect some fawning sycophant to blow smoke up my exhaust, but a little respect and common courtesy goes a long way.6 points

In terms of customer service, a couple of months ago I rang Bass Direct as I had somehow managed to lose one of the feet off a Bergantino cab on a gig. Note that I bought the cab s/h from someone on here, not from BD. Marcus asked me to email him the serial no of the cab so that he could look into it. Thirty minutes later I was copied into an email from Mark asking Marcus to look in a drawer in the storeroom where they might have some spares. The next morning there was an email from Marcus saying they couldn't find any spares but he had emailed Jim Bergantino. A few hours later there was a message from JB saying that it wasn't cost-effective to mail a replacement over, but saying exactly what the replacement was. At this point I bought the right feet from eBay and they arrived in time for the gig on the next weekend. So, all sorted in less than 24 hours. I know it was only a few emails, but I thought they genuinely made an effort and that was pretty good service, seeing as I didn't even buy the cab from them.6 points

Dep job on lead guitar with a rock’n’roll band I’ve played with quite a bit. 40 mile drive to BL’s house, transferred my kit to his van, and another hour and a quarter to the venue. Except there’s a carnival and the street is closed. Carnival marshalls’ local knowledge plus satnav got us into the back gate, whence it was a 100yds carry and 2 flights of steps down to the ‘stage area’. Knackered already! The gig itself went fine until I started Crazy Little Thing Called Love, which the BL’s missus normally sings - but she’s home sick and there is a dep rhythm guitarist. He’s very good, playing intelligently so that we stay out of each other’s way. BL managed the song and we all had a laugh. Usual challenge of loading out through a crowd of p!ssed-up punters, although this time a shorter carry to the front door. Tried to snooze in the van on the way back, which was a mistake as this morning I feel like I’ve been beaten up. Rehearsal tonight (different band) for an unpaid party gig for the birthday party of a member’s missus. Rehearsal room is up three flights of stairs and along some corridors, but all the kit goes up in a goods lift. Could do without it tbh.5 points

We played a set at the UK Country Music awards. Short and sweet, as there were numerous acts on the bill, interspersed with some talking and eating and general awarding. Really friendly and helpful crew and there was no chicken wire in place, so it was obviously a civilised crowd. We played well and got some positive reponses from the audience, which was nice, as we're more geared to Americana, than straight country, although I've no idea what the difference is really. Anyway, the band's called Fine Lines, just so I don't get shouted at.5 points

I bought this on a pretty crazy whim earlier in the summer when I convinced myself I needed a 4 string fretless. I don’t, not in any of my current bands. It has been used at precisely three rehearsals and one gig (for one song…). Alan originally had it installed with a P Retro but I’m a fan of passive basses so he changed this out to volume, tone and pickup coil select (ceramic / both in parallel / both in series / alnico). The battery compartment is still there should you wish to change it back. It is a lovely, lovely bass. Super lightweight, sounds amazing. Tentatively putting the wonderful bass up for sale as I really need to sort my amplification out which will be pricy. Something local to me has come up for sale which really floats my boat but if it sells before this I'll probably withdraw it. Anyhow. I bought this here earlier in the year and it's not left the house. I mainly use my other Precision as it's well 'roadworn'. The LPB finish is gorgeous and I really wanted to keep it that way! I added a vintage off white pick guard and Fender thumb rest. I was going to replace the BadAss bridge and fit covers but I saw sense and left it be. Other than that it's in the same excellent condition as in the photos shown in the link below. (Much better pics than I can manage). It's fitted with Labella flats but can fit rounds if required. It comes with a hard case and postage is possible but I'd obviously prefer collection or meet up. Price is firm and no trade offers please. Not the most amazing one for us last night. The White Line (for you 'tell us your band' folks) played a pub on the beach. To practically nobody. Oh well. The rig was my trusty G&L L2000 into a Shure Wireless>TC MojoMojo>Sansamp Paradriver V2. I was right by the pa in a tiny room so I put a tiny amount of 120Hz up (as that's where our sub crosses over so it kind of felt like a decent guess) in the singer's wedge and left my stage stuff in the car.4 points

Some people will look upon this bass and their hearts will be filled with joy. I'm sure it sounds great and the build quality is magnificent, but it really is my worst nightmare. For context, when I see a nicely worn in Fender Precision with the early 70's logo and a tort scratchplate, I get a warm, tingly feeling.4 points

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that I've had an occasional negative experience with just about every music shop I've ever frequented; BD, PMT, GG, G4M etc. all included, but I know I'm not in a great mood at work every single day and I'm certainly not beyond making a mistake, so I try to keep things in perspective. There have been times I've not managed it and stores I've never returned to because I believe them to be fundamentally dishonest, but if it's an interpersonal issue I tend to just chew the person there and then rather than walk away seething. I wonder whether BD get more attention partly because of the kind of stock they hold. When you've finally decided to treat yourself to a bit of expensive, speciality kit that you've been building up in your head, which you've potentially travelled a fair distance to try/buy, and then the purchase goes wrong or you don't get the attitude you'd like from the salesman, it often seems to go down like a brick. Lower value commodity purchases that people make more frequently from whichever box-shifter is local / has stock / ships cheapest, perhaps have less to go wrong with them in the first place, and raise less emotional responses and negative reviews when they do go wrong?4 points

This. My first proper bass was a Fender Precision (Burst/Tort/Rosewood), bought in 1969. My last bass was a Sadowsky Jazz (Burst/Tort/Rosewood), bought in 2017. There has been a world of innovation in the intervening 48 years, but these guys just look and sound like basses to me.3 points
