  1. Set up is almost done. It plays nicely. With the action set at a pretty low 1.0mm - 1.7mm there is just one high spot (14th fret A string) that will just need a couple of minutes of the micro-web to sort and no other buzzes at all. I've secured the battery (a couple of silicone-tubed screws keep it in its chamber) and added the all important label: Still left to do is the nut, a bit of final tidying up on the fretboard, the high spot on the 14th, final polish and then in its case ready for the hand over Oh...but just before that, the final arty farty shots

  3. Hi all I'm selling a 1981 Yamaha Pulser 400 bass built specifically for the Japanese market as basically a 70s P bass copy. It's 34 inch scale, ash body, maple neck. In excellent condition with just some lacquer cracks on the back. Plays and sounds like a good 70s p bass should. No trades thanks and can only do collection only sale at this time or travel within a reasonable distance. I've used the photos from the bass bros website where I purchased it from as they are pretty good. Only played at home so no new dings or scratches etc. Thanks

  5. I used to be pretty active around here some years ago and ran a blog about effects etc... but I stepped away from bass after getting divorced and life getting messy. At that time, I sold my entire library of effects, including the WMD stuff (I used a Super FatMan from them as well). This very thread will have more pedalboards of mine in it than I care to remember, but here is the big touring board I used with Our Helical Mind, and where the WMD stuff was a pretty critical part of the sound... It's a 2-tier board, so there are a load of other pedals you can't see that were controlled by the GigRig Quarter Master, or in the loop of other effects. It looks cool, but try taking it on tour - it took 2 people to lift it (that board is 1.4m wide). I ended up refining this set up and stripping it down to two smaller Diago boards that I linked together, which revolved around making due with fewer tones and using an Eventide Pitchfacter to replace a LOT of the pedals (that thing is insanely good). Good times!

  7. Okay, it's not a typical jazz bass, not a Fender or a Squier or one of the countless clones, but it does have jazz pickups...and it doesn’t have the dreaded 60-cycle hum. Italia is not a brand you hear being lauded by bassists, but the people at Italia put together a very nice bass...Wilkinson pickups, bridge and tuners. I have no experience with Wilkinson, but everything seems spot on. I've always liked the look of the Imola, so I took a bit of a gamble and bought it online without being able to try it out...payed off! New price is $899, but I got it for $400 and it looks like it's never been played. GHS black tapewounds make this a real winner!

  8. Balances nicely on the strap. This is a slippy seat-belt-material type strap but, even with "look no hands", it stays exactly where you want it to suit your playing style: And we have sounds....and LEDs Humbucker: Single: 'P': So just the final setup, which I will do tomorrow.   10. Putting a feeler out to establish if there's any interest for this monster of a bass. A new addition to the family has realigned the priorities so this awesome bass could be up for sale. A Yamaha custom shop Billy Sheehan signature bass. It's just effortless and a joy to play. It's in excellent condition with original case and certificate. I guess the stuff I don't like to hear is when an established act takes from a struggling artist. That just feels wrong on every level.

I think there's definitely some sort of scale here, and "gifted musician who picks up the key by ear and knows what to play" is possibly not at the same end of said scale as "stoner who freestyles something different every time you play, that may or may not actually sound like he's playing the same song as the rest of you" 🤣

Paul Rogers is regarded as one of the best Blues/Rock vocalists, considering his age, he still sings the Free and Bad Co stuff in the original keys when performing live, probably sounding better than ever. Most of the rock vocalists his age now have shagged voices and can hardly perform or need to change the song keys to suit their fading vocals. Have to totally disagree on your comments, hey, but each to their own.

  15. I’ve always understood the graduated clearance under the strings is to allow for Vibration, but I set mine as low as it will go without fret buzz , if for any reason it won’t set low it goes out the door

  16. Dummy switch labelled "P Bass / J Bass" so you don't scare the locals in recording studios. Alternatively a 'Talent' pot. Mine goes to 11 but I fear it is still inadequate

  19. Hi I’m looking to sell my 1966 jazzbass. The bass is original, including the hardcase and chrome covers. It has been refretted at some point and has a new nut. Pickups are original and sound great, and pots original too. It has been played heavily, the neck is nicely played in and feels great.   22. Right. Audition for keys player 1. She was a lovely person. Her keyboard was the £89.99 PSR she’d obviously received in 1998 for her birthday. er. She brought a flute. She was better at flute. but the B key was “broken” so…she avoided that note. And a lot of flute is very annoying. And yeah. She was a lovely person. But no second call - we need the singer to vet these people, seriously.

  23. I hate musical snobbery when combined with stupidity. In Sixth Form my guitarist gave a long lengthy rant about how nobody can ever cover the Beatles. At the end of it I said, "what do you know about the Beatles?" which was met with the sincerest of replies, "It's George Lennon and that!" Over 30 years later and I still haven't forgotten that line.

  24. I parted company with my rig at the weekend (and Im pretty sure a couple of basses will be following it.. Im looking at you Spectors...) as with a lovelly combination of Spondylosis, a possible trapped artery in the neck and calcification of said artery, I am not going to be playing live in a hurry if at all. Cast my reservations to the wind and decided to buy a Headrush to go with my recently purchased HX Stomp. Have to say my initial impressions are very favourable. Granted in a terraced house with paper thin walls I cant quite "give it the beans", but at a reasonable volume it sounded no better or worse than amps Ive owned. If anything it has more bottom end which suprised me. Anyone know where "unity gain" is on the HX Stomp output? Currently have the output level at 12 oclock.

  25. For sale is a super 2017 Japanese Sadowsky RV5 Metroline Bass in superb condition. It's in an vintage Olympic White finish and is very creamy, complete with a tortoise shell pickguard. It plays and sounds superb with a lovely low action. These Japanese Sadowskys are brilliant instruments and now discontinued. Sadly due to a band break up it's not getting used at all. It will be supplied with a great Reunion Blues gigbag that would set you back over £150 on its own. I'm looking for £1,800 plus £20 postage. No trades thanks unless anyone has a Gibson J-45 or Custom Shop Tele they want to offer up. I'd consider a px on a lightweight Fender US Jazz Bass in excellent condition or an 80's 2EQ Stingray with the balance in cash my way.   28. Well the neck is back - somewhat predictably, @Andyjr1515 has done an amazing job. I’m now totally at a loss where to go. The lust for purple has faded. So, just mulling over what to do. I have enough chrome hardware, and more or less enough gold hardware…

  30. Picked up a 2014 deluxe in the limited edition rootbeer finish. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for these basses - they’re really very good! Going to try and source an H with rosewood fingerboard next. Specific I know but I want it sufficiently different from the one I have on all counts

  33. FS/FT ACG J-Type 5. £1100/£1350 I bought this stock bass from Alan at ACG a couple of years ago. Excellent condition. Home use only. Will sell as either fretted or fretless for £1100 or with both necks for £1350. I bought a partially lined fretless neck about a year ago and the Bass has this neck at the moment along with a black scratchplate. It was a few years ago, but in some capacity it played a part in almost every track you can find here - https://ourhelicalmind.bandcamp.com We were just live drums and bass, so all the instrumentation that you hear is the bass, loading with effects. The Geiger counter was one of the core elements of all the distorted and synth tones (mixed with filters, modulation and pitch shifting etc).

  37. The only review of the Digbeth pre I've come across so far. It is very well featured, but will it manage to knock a Tech VTDI (or whatever your fav pre is) off it's perch? Jury's is out, but my sense is that it could certainly do some things better e.g. low end retention, while not having as much flexibility in others - the VTDI is ridiculously versatile in the tones it can deliver, which I guess is part of its popularity. I get the point from di Marco of having a tailored pre-amp for each bass (in his case 10 of each!), but I suspect that's not a luxury that most of us would be looking to afford. Speaking of affordability, this one is packing a LOT of bang for its buck. In comparison you could easily be paying £300+ for a Mesa or Darkglass pre. and at its launch price the Digbeth does seem worth having a punt on.

Nothing fancy, just pentatonics, arpeggios, the usual suspects to fit in line with the drums and compliment the single guitar. It wasn't beethoven, but it was decent enough. Then I got an email. "Hey, we want you to join but can you just play E?" " you want me to play in the key of E? Sure..." "No, just play E." "In the verse... chorus....?" "no, just E for the songs." "ok... do you mean you just want me to play the root notes? This song is in the key of G, the other is in D... What about the rhythm?" "No, just E. I want you to go 'do do do do do do do do do do' for the whole song." "I'm sorry what" "you know...DO DO DO DO DO DO DO DO" "...."

  40. Loaded up my board with a WMD which I couldn't resist for very long when it came up used recently, as they're pretty rare over here. I thought it was going to be completely crazy based on some of the YT reviews and that I was going to be at risk of an IED blowing up in my face but, to my slight disbelief, it's turned out to have a surprising number of usable settings and first impressions are that it's actually a more versatile "gated fuzz" than the Mastotron which it has (at least for now) displaced from my board. But even in this Civilian mode, the WMD does make the Mastotron seem pretty un-savage in comparison.

  45. Working from home the past god know how long has led me to discover and rediscover some cracking music. A band that I used to listed to a lot in the 90's but then I lost touch with was Fugazi, an American post hardcore band that mixed in a dub like vibe at times. This is one of my favourite tunes, I think it was originally released in around 1990 but still sounds great today, helped by the fact the band were doing their own thing so haven't dated like a lot of music does.
