  1. New 1300W Amplifier with Bass Response Technology I'd take that with a giant shovel of salt

  2. Agreed. Re. the original question, a pair of those cabs plus a good quality powered sub might be just about OK, but avoid the subs that are aimed at the cheaper end of the disco market and that claim ridiculous power outputs, etc. They may make a fair amount of noise, but it's all boom and no notes and the sound falls apart when you push them (they often achieve volume via over-zealous porting to give a false impression of power). As with our bass rigs, clean, plentiful low end costs money.

  3. Just to inform you I bought Tecamp Puma T1000 and Barefaced One10. And I'm REALLY happy with this combination. Under 10 kg, loud enough and defined tone - everything I was looking for

  4. All this talk about Ringo and his drumming abilty really gets away from me. Anyone can be a good competent drummer. Ringo was first and foremost a Beatle. Being a Beatle was his job and nobody did or does it better than him. I say there's never too many hounors if you were a part of a band that changed the world for the better. Blue

  5. I'm a professional musician, though most of my income is from teaching music. Most of my gigs tend to be bunched up. One week in April was pretty mad with a gig on the Sunday, then two in Paris Tuesday and Wednesday, then two more on the Saturday and Sunday. In fact April was my busiest month of the year with 13 gigs, including the highlight for me personally one with Steve Lawson right at the end.

  6. I've been in wedding & function bands for about the past 23 years. Anyone who's been in that type of band knows that you can be playing one style one minute and something completely different the next. In that time I've owned about 130 basses and the right bass for the band was the one I had at the time and to alter the sound I've moved my hand towards the neck or the bridge and played either heavier or lighter. My advice would be to find a bass that you really like to play, that feels good and you can comfortably play all night. Chances are the audience won't notice the difference anyway. Sometimes we get too caught up in trying to find something that we don't really need. I know that I was incredibly guilty of it in the past. When I change basses it's for the hell of it and not the sound. Any half decent bass will sound decent through the PA. Once I had it out of my system I started enjoying playing more instead of trying to find something that I thought I needed but had all along

  8. Been quite an enlightening thread! We've got a number who are doing more than 100 gigs a year: @acidbass 185; @Jus Lukin 172; @casapete 150 - are you guys all full time pro's? and what about @M@23 with 96 and @ambient at 72 - semi pro? @chris_b 70; @mcnach 57; @ g jones 56 and @ kk jale 51 - what about you guys? Long established weekend warriors? Also working full or part time as well? All very impressive guys! Do you guys all use agencies or is it a case of long established and recurring relationships with pubs and clubs?

  9. I just don't get these honours, what's the point? nice for the unknowns (like the little old lady that's done school crossings for 50 years) but the rich and famous, isn't being lucky enough to be rich and famous enough?

  10. G&L L2000. Probably the only bass that can do its own thing as well as a very passable P and Jazz bass sound.

  11. Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 plus Aguilar carry bag - Now at a *bargain* £450 Still available.....! In great condition, never been pushed - seems to be a lot louder than 500 to be honest. Zip on bag is a bit temperamental but is all still in good condition. Fancy a bit of a change so looking to move it on. Would prefer collection from Lichfield, Staffordshire but happy to talk about p&p if need be. Questions welcome! Thanks for looking.

  12. The clear out continues and reluctantly I'm putting this Beauty up for sale. This is the all valve small brother to the classic SVT, I believe it a 1976 Magnavox era model. It pumps out 100W of you favourite all valve Ampeg goodness. I bought this some years ago for a series of recording sessions I was doing with a Prog band and it performed its job admirably. Subsequently I used it for one gig (Where our sound man said it was his favourite bass sound ever!) and then decided that rather than fund my osteopaths retirement I'd leave it at home. There it has sat since sadly. The guy I bought it from told me that it had been recently re valved and that the transformer had been changed to a comparable UK (240V) unit. This means you can plug it straight into UK mains without the need for a step down transformer. Overall it look a bit tatty, but I think that just adds to the charm of an amp like this. As an added bonus, it come with a full (butter dish style) flightcase. I paid £750 for it some years ago so I'm looking to recoup that. This is strictly collection only from North London N21 as it weighs more than most planets!! (even without the flightcase!) Please PM me you email address for more pics if you require.

  13. £1500 / EUR 1700 The codes on pickups and pots match with the serial and dates it to 1978. In 40 years it has seen a lot of playing and gigging, but most of the thick black poly finish is still on. The neck is straight, the bullet trussrod works fine, the back of the neck is perfect. It´s possible to adjust it to a real low action if that´s what you need. Luckily he kept the original parts, so after I bought the bass I put back in the grey bobbin PUs including all original pots and wiring, so the bass is in original condition again except for a set of Schaller security end pins. The sound of this bass is rich, the heavy body with maple neck gives a lot of high end together with a solid fat tone. A perfect weapon for studio work! It weighs more than 5 kg, typical for the late 70´s Fender ash bodys. I´m located in Berlin, Germany. Pickup is welcome, shipping is possible to the expense of the buyer. No trades please.

  14. Darkglass Microtubes 900. Very good condition. Boxed with foot switch, power cable, signed letter and manual. One very small mark underneath the head, otherwise mint. I bought this on a whim really. It is a little too complicated for my needs. Collection preferred from East Yorkshire but may meet up if not too far (20 miles or so) I have seen a Fender CS P bass I want to buy so I have reduced the price on the amp. £625 collected Now on E bay too. Any questions please ask Dave

  15. I’ve finished my plans for my first scratch build it’s kinda based on a Warwick Dolphin (it’s not fretless I just didn’t put the frets on) The plan is: Ash body with a walnut burr veneered top Bolt on Walnut neck with Ebony fretboard and matching walnut burr headstock (headstock shape will probably change) 5 string 34” scale 2 Jazz bass pickups (or maybe MM haven’t fully decided yet) Gold hardware and fret wire Thru body stringing (sorry Jabba_the_gut but I really like the way you’ve done your thru body stringing with the tun-o-matic bridge so I’ve borrowed the idea) All it leaves now is to go rob a bank to pay for it then I’ll be able to get started

  16. My current band will have been going for 22 years this coming summer so I don't have any real plans to change band anytime soon but we have been looking for a new singer for nearly 6 months now and have been gigging with a couple of dep vocalists since the start of November. We did think we had found the right guy a few months ago but that all fell through (fantastic singer from Belgium who had only been in the UK a couple of months but turns out he was in breach of some of the rules of his sabbatical from his job in Belgium and was forced to go back or repay a load of money). Anyway, it's all been a bit disheartening to be honest and we've seen so many people that weren't a fit or were one of the aforementioned time wasters that I was all but ready to pack it in. A couple of weeks ago though I was contacted by an old friend (who is a really great singer and also an excellent guitarist) who saw our advert on join my Band and is interested as his current band will be calling it a day after New Year's eve. We've sorted out an audition with him in the new year so fingers crossed but if that doesn't work out then I think I may just have to start looking for something new.

  18. I'm surprised this hasn't sold, though I see that there has been lots of interest. Wal are boutique basses but they do seem to produce a lot that look alike. I had one with the Padua facings which was pretty much indistinguishable from many of the others I've seen. For £6K+ I would have thought that you'd would want something that's "a bit different". This is only one, or possibly two, that I've seen with the Olive Ash facings, so not only do you get the unique Wal tone you get a "fairly unique", definitely very rarely seen, Bass. I would have thought that would be owners would be diving in to rip it out of your hands especially as those seen on eBay are generally much higher priced. I don't get it!!

  22. Cool, this was the bass I used when I just started playing, I used it in a RATM cover band and a heavy rock band, and it absolutely nailed those heavy in your face tones I needed for those bands. I've now moved on to Warwick and hi-end Jazz basses, but this is still a lot of bass for the money especially if you're into harder styles of music, have a free bump on me.

  26. Me, I'm working full time, and I have a girlfriend but no kids so it's pretty easy, especially when I can bring her with me the times we play at some fun festivals or at interesting locations (for instance, we had 3 gigs in Skye one weekend last year, so I drove myself with my gf rather than in the van, and we did a little tourism too). A total of 57 gigs in this past year may sound like every weekend is taken, however it's not unusual to have a few very busy weekends, multiple gigs on one day even (two of the bands I play in have often been at the same festivals, which makes summer quite busy that way)... so there's still lots of free time left. We book our own gigs. After spending time seeking them, now we get lots of gigs when they just contact us. If we get a gig somewhere beyond a certain distance, we can often arrange to have another gig nearby to help us return home with a positive balance... but it took years to know the right people. One of the bands, our gigs come mostly from one single member who just seems to know everybody all over the UK: again, he's been doing this for a long time. We got lucky with him.

  27. Thanks chaps! Didn't think you'd noticed the ladies in the string section Paul? ambient - there are one or two other ELO bands doing the circuit, so let me know where/when before I bask in the glory. Cheers.

  28. I'm a pro player, have been for approx. 25 years now. My main band is a tribute band that tours UK theatres, 'The ELO Experience'. I usually perform around 80 gigs a year with them. I'm also in two other regular setups - a country rock band called 'The Fork Handles' (I know...) and also an acoustic duo with a weekly pub residency. Throw in some deps and function gigs as and when and there it is. In terms of getting the gigs, my main band has built up enough of a reputation over 10 years for theatres to know what's what. Our frontman handles all enquiries and organises the schedule. The other stuff I do is fairly local, and again, we've been doing it a while and we're all quite well known in the area, which helps a lot.

  30. It's a good question. I was going to say "never had one". But you're right... you get asked all the time "what sort of music do you play". I normally real off some example artists but maybe it is a good idea to have a basic "theme". More thought needed!

  31. Ringo is a multi millionaire so already well rewarded for his efforts. To my mind he seems to have been knighted for not dying. BTW I do like the guy and I like the Beatles. But what about Jeffrey Long. He's an ex-para and 86. He does sponsored walks to raise cash for the British Legion - the distance dictated by his age. Amongst countless others he's walked 84 miles along the Leeds Liverpool canal , 85 miles along Hadrians wall and this year 86 miles along the Thames , despite having a bust ankle and , incredibly , being on Chemo. Jason Manford got involved with that one and as a result donations on his just giving page went through the roof. I can assure you I'm not jealous but were I an aging rock star enjoying my millions , polishing my countless music awards and waking up next to a Bond girl ( often on the floor , I read !!) I'd be satisfied enough to say 'No thanks - how about you give it to Jeffrey who'd likely use the increased profile to raise even more cash'. update - I just found out Jeffrey already has an MBE for his charitable work. Pleased to hear it.

  35. That's not the Gibson TB+ pickups. The scooped out short edges are the tell-tale signs - the Gibson ones are squarer - like this pic - Also, the GIbson TB+ only uses 2 screws to attach it to the bass.

  36. Time wasters? I can spot them at a first rehearsal or jam. They can be late, ill prepared, egotistical, too loud, argumentative, have no transport, no spares for instrument, a noodler, have no sense of humor or people skills, arrogant, drunk or stoned. Avoid people with any of the mentioned traits and you wont go far wrong.

  41. Once the glue on the neck was fully set, I trimmed the neck to the finished shape and checked it fitted the neck pocket. It fitted nice and snuggly first time - well chuffed!! Just for an idea of how this is going to look when finished, I put bits of hardware in place and it looks like this: Still got lots to do but pleased with the progress so far.
