  1. Late to report but I've been in Whitby for the April Goth Weekend. We played the Shadow Factory event at The Crafty Cove on Friday night with bright new things Social Youth Cult and local stars Westenra. Sold out gig which wasn't that surprising given the line-up. The Crafty Cove is an interesting venue, being a shop during the day and a night club in the evening. When we arrived to load in they were still putting all the clothing racks away. Sound checks nearly over-ran mostly because Social Youth Cult had been told that backline would be provided and then discovered that what was in the venue wasn't very suitable and neither us or Westenra use any that they could have borrowed. Finally got everything sorted minutes before the doors opened. Despite the sound check hiccups Social Youth Cult were even better than when I saw them in October and their sound is veering towards Bauhaus rather than their previous Joy Division heavy influences. It could have been a hard act to follow but I think we managed it. There were some interesting glitches: I managed to hit my bass so hard during the breakdown in "Adore Me" that the wireless transmitter dropped out of the jack socket. Luckily I spotted it before someone trod on it and was able to plug it back in only missing the first bar of the next verse. Our singer forget all the lyrics to the first verse of "Tilting" and the foot switch for the backing was doing some weird things that required manual intervention at the computer. Despite all of that we went down really well and sold an unfeasible amount of T-shirts and CDs including loads of copies of our brand new single "Robert Smith's Eyes". Obligatory photos: Next gig is Carpe Noctum on 10th May at The Lending Room in Leeds supporting Faces Of Sarah.

  2. My gig last night was a recording session for which I was the engineer. My mate has opened a small studio where he records his music school students, so it's mainly acoustic guitar and singers. His initial attempt to record were, in his own words, rubbish (well, actually he used non-Basschat language which I have translated) so he asked me in to do it properly. Having been recording myself and bands for years (I started on small Fostex 4 track cassette in the late 80's and went through an 8 track reel-to-reel machine and various digital hard disk recorders), I have some experience. Last night was a beginner singer/guitarist who wanted to record a CD's worth of cover songs so it was a relatively simple set up. He wanted to sing and play at the same time, which made getting separation from guitar and voice impossible and he kept moving around, so trying to get a consistent sound was hard. We managed to get through about half of his list before his voice gave out and he started to struggle nailing some of the guitar parts. After he'd gone, my mate explained that he was in his 90s. He didn't look it, and my admiration for his performance went up a notch or two.

  3. Selling my Mayones Custom EP 5. Bought last year from Guitar Guitar. Recently set up at The Bass Gallery and sounding fantastic. It’s one of the best sounding basses I’ve ever owned but I’m really not getting on with the 19mm string spacing. Collection from Peckham SE15 preferred, or could potentially meet up somewhere. Would rather not post it. Comes with all the original bits; very swanky semi-rigid gigbag, strap locks, tools, paperwork etc. Weight is about 4.36kg so not too heavy and balances very nicely on a strap. Condition is excellent. One small ding near the jack socket, as shown in one of the pics. Other than that it’s perfect. Selling now as something has caught my eye on here. If that sells I may well withdraw this as it is a lovely bass! Specs below: •Origin: Poland •Year: 2023 •Body Wood: Swamp Ash/AAAA Quilted Maple •Colour: Blackburst •Finish: Gloss •Neck Finish: Satin •Neck Material: Maple •Fingerboard: Pau Ferro •Pickups: Mayones •Preamp: Mayones •Pickguard: N/A •Hardware: Black •Gig Bag/Case: Gig bag •Frets: 24 •String Spacing: 19mm •Nut Width: 44mm •Scale Length: 34.25” •Weight: 4.36kg

  6. We don't have a guitarist, drummer or keyboard player. We never perform live. We manage to write approximately one song a year. In a good decade. Beat that.

  7. Because we don't rehearse much i actually quite enjoy them. We all bring sandwiches and juice or coffee and sit and have a chat for a while in the middle where we catch up on what each has been doing and gossip really. Its as close as i get to hanging out with a bunch of mates like the old days when i was young After one new song by ABBA which i thought was pretty standard stuff for any bass player the guitarist told me i'm the first bassist that he hasn't had to show how to play the bass line in that particular song. He said the same with Wizard Wish It Could be Xmas Everday when we first did it. Maybe because my background is in Prog / Jazz-rock i just find them relatively easy. ? Dave

  8. As per the bitsa thread, too many unfinished basses, not enough time, so here goes (I'll be adding stuff over the next day or two, if you want more photos of anything please ask). I'm pretty much emptying this box....... First up, Warmoth roasted swamp ash body with lightly oiled finish, plus very high spec Warmoth Precision neck (you can see the stunning flame in the abve photo, third bass from the left). I've kept them together because they work and fit extremely well plus both are very lightweight to the point that I would strongly suggest a set of lightweight tuners on this bass when built. All that's required are PUP and circuit. This will build into a stunning instrument. £500 for the neck and body or neck £325 and body £225

  10. I think I might have pitched this too high so the new price is £550. I can't change the price in the header Handbox R400 & Handbox 1x12 Cab Bought these a couple of years back from Sims Guitars, it was their Handbox demo rig. The amp has been recently serviced and there are a couple of small nicks in the cab tolex from gigging. Handbox Cab is a 1 x 12" Ferrite (Eminence Speaker) 250W/80hm Selling as we're moving house and down-sizing so I'm selling off my gig rig as moving means leaving my band too 😥 I want to sell this as a rig and not split them. Possible courier delivery or happy to do a meet up

  11. An absolute workhorse of a Bass which would not only make a great inexpensive back up bass, but it is such an excellent sounding & playable instrument, I would be happy to use it in any situation having a really nice set up with a low action, level frets & weighing just 3.6Kg, or just a tad under 8lbs in ‘old money’ according to digital scales. Specs…. Passive Alder Body Maple Neck Rosewood Slab Fingerboard 38mm nut width, so very Jazz - esque + shallow depth. Jazz style powerful pickups Bridge Volume, Neck Volume with Master tone controls 24 Fret Double octave fretboard 34” Scale length Ti Flats fitted which have had very little use Stagg padded Gig Bag in great condition included. There are a few play wear marks, but overall it is in very good condition - please see pics. Can post to the U.K. Mainland via Parcelforce 24, or collection welcomed & knock £25 off the total price. Any questions, please give me a shout.

  16. That said, this technique is not really new and Robert Benedetto made two acoustic archtop guitars with similar wood, simply stating that the sound holes were already naturally constructed by the worms. "Il Teredo (Serial #S1416GP) The sound holes are naturally constructed by the Teredo mollusk, also known as the Ship Worm. One of the most unique guitars we've made!"

  19. After watching this thread, umming and ahhing and convincing myself I don’t need another bass (I really really don’t), I thought I was out of the woods when they sold out on andertons. but I thought I’d check eBay anyway. £149 and change later, an ‘out of box but unused’ black soloking will hopefully be on its way to me soon! I really need to stop reading these threads!

  20. Second..... nitro finished swamp ash Jazz body with FL Precision neck (brand unknown, was sold to me as Allparts many moons ago, then went to another BCer - @oldslapper IIRC - before finding its way back to me, a not uncommon take), PUPs are SD SJB1s, again I've kept them together because they work together, but happy to split: Bass £450, loaded body £325, neck £175 NECK SOLD

  26. I’ve definitely never loosened the DI cable of a fellow band member so that their already-too-loud amp didn’t also get fed into the PA, and I most certainly never pushed the plug back in again at the end of the last set so that they didn’t know anything had happened. But seriously, if matey gets wind that his settings have been messed with, there will be tears before bedtime.

  27. My really nice Fretless Bass with a solid Alder body, Maple neck & a beautifully figured Slab Rosewood lined fingerboard, plays like the proverbial dream and sounds great with oodles of mwoarrrrr. In excellent condition with just a few light play marks. Suitable for either the seasoned Fretless player, or due to the low action and fret lines this would be excellent for a beginner or an inexpensive way to try a Fretless if you’ve always fancied one, but didn’t want to spend a lot of your Great British pounds in case Fretless is not for you. Set up really nicely with a low action all the way up the neck, a lovely rich ‘woody’ sound & the bridge pickup provides instant Jaco when required, otherwise it can be played without the Mwoarrr. Nice and light at 3.7kg or a tad over 8lbs in ‘old money’ according to my digital scales. The lines thankfully extend over the sides of the fingerboard making intonation a doddle, even for an old duffer like me. In excellent condition, with just a few play wear marks, but nothing serious. Specs……. Solid three piece? Alder Body Maple Neck Lovely Figured Rosewood Slab lined Fretless fingerboard Yamaha Soap Bar neck & bridge pickups with individual volume and Master tone control. La Bella Flats - if memory serves. 38mm nut width, so very Jazz - esque + nice and shallow. Stagg padded Gig bag included. Any questions, please give me a shout. Can post to the U.K. Mainland via Parcelforce 24 delivery & insurance via Secursus, or collection welcome & knock £25 off the price.

  28. Wow. I really hate it. That looks especially awful. I do love the FSO look with the big round overs on the edges, though. Imagine how nice that would look finished in candy ANYTHING without all the worm holes in it. Also, £7,300 is a crazy price for a P Bass. There's nothing you can do to a P Bass to justify that kind of price tag to me.

  29. I’d say probably not worth having both, if you find your QC is under utilised (you hardly use the 8 footswitches, or you constantly wish it was smaller, or it’s just doing a little bit of processing on an already busy board) then it could be a good option to downsize the footprint. Else you’ve got two wildly different Capture ecosystems and workflows, personally I’d find that quite annoying but YMMV.

  30. That's the bloody thing with rattles. If you do anything that reduces the energy of the natural bass vibration, it reduces the buzz, so you think you've found the source Whereas all you're doing is not triggering it.

  31. Now I get it! I could never understand how people on Farcebook Marketplace had the gall to sell garage ridden overpriced guitar tat. They were just placing the instruments in a pro-toneworm environment to enrich the instrument's inherent musical qualities!

  37. We don't play Oasis We don't play Dakota We don't play Sex on Fire We don't play Mr Brightside I think that sets us apart 😂 What we do play is 60s and 70s stuff that you will have likely heard of but that other bands don't do. Rock, prog and pop. We like doing stuff that is technically challenging and stuff that you wouldn't think a trio could do. That, and the guitar/vocalist has a great line in banter and amuses & entertains the audience. It's a lovely combination and I feel so lucky to be a part of it. I've been in bands with him for 40 years now

  38. Spent a loooong evening with two mates. Was expecting to try out my baselines to a few of their songs but ended up laying down four tracks in garageband. Then I recorded bass, rhythm and lead for one of my own songs while lyrics were written for it! A drummer is lined up too!

  39. Our drummer went to that gig, his mate was playing in Folk'd About. He was also checking out the venue as we're playing there this Friday. That is a very cool pose, I have hat envy too!
