There are people on here I know and trust with whom a bank transfer is no problem at all. There are other people I don't know so I check their feedback thread, and given the place that Basschat is, there's a fairly good chance that several members have dealt with them successfully, which is reassuring. In other cases, if I'm buying blind so to speak, I'd need an extra layer of security provided by PayPal, in which case I pay the small % transaction fee so the buyer gets the total amount. When a seller I don't know or doesn't have feedback says "I don't accept PayPal, it's bank transfer or nothing", it tends to be the latter

It’s been a long while since I’ve posted a board shot. Been through a lot of chopping and changing and, as you can see, have been on a preamp exploration of late. At some point I need to re-integrate my Morningstar loop switcher and MIDI controller. The chaotic, unfinished and disconnected nature of this is pretty much a reflection of the state of my brain at the moment. Also looks like I need some more cables and a power supply expansion.

so a few years ago I just had a HX stomp, sold it and went into the individual pedals world, finding out what suits, what doesn't ... and then maybe admitting some kind of defeat by buying a HX stomp again, but finding out I've learned so much along the process that I'm using it completely differently .... So big changes with and the plan is not to fiddle too much bar a few wee things I need to sort ... it also is I think the first time I've spent ages working out a layout that works well for ergonomically. Complete overkill too - but fun. And sometimes thats the point. Signal chain. Sonic Research - Turbo Tuner - Christmas present from my daughters fancier than I need, but does let me do fairly good setups so there's that. The iron man - My version of the SS/BS mini - it's fantastic clear sounding JFet drive. It's my kind of sound. It has a C1M pot for bass so a bit more low end than the schematic you see online, and the J201 ldss values you would use in a Barbershop... Valeton - OC-10 - It's a tiny OC2 clone, with the mod of disconnecting the -2 portion for more gain. It sounds like a smooth OC2 and tracks down to low D. The first octave I've tried that made me 'get' octaves. Broughton Omnicomp - You can keep your cali76's and whatever... my thing was always going to be optical compression, and this is one of the best. (IMO, @jimbobothy may disagree... ) It sounds better than good and just works. Normally always on. HX Stomp - I caved and went back. I had had a L4 preamp doing amp sounds in analogue world - but the bottom end was a bit uncontrolled. This gives me control. And scratches the itch of "ooh but I'ld like to try a rat with a clean blend and a flanger on the clean"or whatever. Set to change patches on the H9 via midi if I want and accepts Expression CC and tap tempo. LOOP 1.1 - Aoteaora Intermodulator - my tiny version of a prunes and custard - it's amazing. Quite often with distortions I find they take over your sound in a big fuzzy or velcoy mess, this wave folder is so touch responsive and just sounds musical and synth. I need to finish the others I'm making , sorry @lee650, this made it on my board before I posted you yours! You can see why I kinda needed a small pedal! I'm not allowed a bigger board. It was going to be before the stomp - till I realised the fun of sticking tremolo into it. LOOP 1.2 - PastFX PF-101 a moog MF101 clone. Turns out I like a moogerfooger envelope way more than a mutron style. And I like this, like the Aoteaora it feels musical to me, and usable in subtle ways. LOOP 2.1 - Providence Anadime Bass Chorus - I've got a few digital versions for chorus here, both sound good. None touch the Anadime. Bought off @admiralchew I think so I could shoot it out against the Tech21 bass boost chorus. There was only one winner - again sweet and musical sounding. LOOP 2.2 - Eventide H9 - It does a lot, the things it does well it does very well, and interfaces with the HX better than it did on it's own. The hot switch will be in an enclosure bottom right once I get around to it. Theres a wee home made patchbay underneath to patch out the expression and hotswitch. JHS colourbox v2 - Always on and the reason I ended up trying the individual pedals thing, sound great, transformer sound, Janek, @krispn and I can't all be wrong right? I use it as a low gain warm DI thing. It does fuzzy, which is normally pretty rubbish but can be nice clipping the tops of signal. The HPF is set a bit high for bass which means it gets a lot of Talkbass hate from the kinda folk who judge pedals based on printed specs, but dont let it put you off, but I'm probably never going to use Metal guitar amps on the stomp either but that doesn't mean it isn't a good tool for bass players... Now to learn to use this all together. At the moment I'm enjoying the ease of getting sounds -the stuff that's easier analogue is analogue, and the control is digital - it seems a simpler workflow. Challenge is to not change it again. Bar the hot switch and... I think the HX needs more current. So either a Cioks crux or 4 thingy or I daisy chain more other the individual pedals together.

I'm always struggling with my interest in pedals and me not wanting to take a big pedalboard... I am very happy with this new pedalboard because it covers all of the projects I play in. The layout might be a little weird, but I think it is the best I could make. Line 6 Relay G10s-->Boss TU-3w-->HX Stomp-->Walrus Canvas DI. All powered by Cioks Sol. I wanted to put the tuner on the left because I always fear that the wireless go crazy (never happened, but better be ready) so I can plug a cable straight to the tuner. I use an external tuner, even though I really like the tuner in the HX, just because I like to have a pedal that mutes not being the HX (in case something happens to the HX). I could have bought a cheaper tuner, but I like the Boss's switch I have to say. I will include my Disaster Area Midi Baby 3 when I need to switch presets or when I need more footswitches. I will just turn the DI 45 degrees and put the Baby 3. The board is a D'addario XPND so no problem. I have no problem with the G10sII. However, I got a Fender Telepath that works incredibly good and it works in 5.8 Hz instead of 2.4Hz. I prefer the format of the G10s, but it takes some room. In the future I will probably switch to the famous Shure, so that I can replace also the tuner, but so far so good.

ACG will be on their usual stand (118) in the main hall with a selection of basses including the new Standard Series. Introductory offer on all of the Standard Series builds. Will also sneak in a guitar.

I ignore any part of a review which refers to setup out of the box - it's utterly irrelevant. If you go through life expecting every bass you receive to be set up to your exact liking, especially at the price points being discussed here, you're going to be disappointed - a lot. Either learn how to set up your instruments, or stop being a cheapskate and operate within the price points where you would expect this kind of service/attention to detail. I suspect it's used in reviews as a cheap shot just so they can have something negative to say about otherwise perfectly serviceable instruments.

I appear to have just joined a Stranglers "Tribute" band.... I was a bit indifferent to the idea initially tbh. I'm aware of them but just the odd song on compilation albums or playlists, but then I started trying to learn the lines. It's given me a whole new appreciation for them and JJ. Are there any decent tutorial/score resources out there for the bass lines? I'm not terribly good with ear learning from record and I like to have something to read along to as I go, in the early stages a least.

It was my third jam/rehearsal with a new line up last night. The Hulla band is still going strong but only do about 6-8 gigs a year and I want to play a bit more frequently. So I answered an ad at the beginning of Feb to join a local band and got the slot. The line up is drums, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and me on bass. We're all getting on well (a prime requisite for me) and we're all keen to avoid the standard pub set list as much as is possible given that we'll be out to entertain others. All three sing rather well (and I can sing a few simple songs) so the potential for vocal harmony is quite exciting. Last night we picked songs at random from the list we'd compiled in the previous two jams and it was sounding pretty good. We practice in a room at the drummer's house and it's all through headphones (the drummer is using an electric kit), which is a great way to get the work done in a relaxed environment (there are cups of tea on hand 😀) and at an ear-friendly volume. It also means that we can record at the push of a button and get a decent record of the evening's work. As the room is relatively small, I'm using my Ibanez SHB1000s into my Ampeg pre-amp/DI pedal which is sounding great. I can see a new small pedal board being created as the songs develop and I nail down the sounds I want for each song.

Although my playing isn't great, JJ's tone is achievable (within reason), with a little bit of tweaking, probably good enough in a live situation? The bass has been removed from all these backing tracks, so what you hear is my take on the bass line. ...and amusingly I've had at least a couple of sellers say "I don't do PayPal because I don't like their morals.....". Yet they're still prepared to use the banks

Therein lies the dilemma... I personally don't accept 'regular' Paypal even if the buyer is offering to pay the fees because the payment can be reversed by Paypal to the buyer. This isn't hypothetical for me; I sold a couple of items some years back and in one instance the buyer said the item was broken/dead and Paypal refunded without me having the option to dispute. In that instance I received the item back... and it was the same model but a different item (I had the serial number), sadly Paypal would hear none of it and I was stiffed. On this group I have feedback and a decent reputation so if a buyer didn't want to collect and wouldn't do a bank transfer then that's the deal ended but no hard feelings!

I recently made a purchase on here via bank transfer, everything went as smoothly as I'd expected. I've had no problems whatsoever with any transactions with fellow BCer's over my 14 years on board. Though I have read about some despicable goings on that have happened to others. I think all you can do is check sellers/buyers feedback and go with your gut feelings.

This indeed. I rarely accept standard PayPal. And if so, I must be sure that the buyer won't be screwing me. So they need to have tracable feedback, and probably do a video call or something. But mostly buyers understand why I don't want to use the standard PayPal. In that case I offer to send them enough evidence for their assurance.

The tension on a set of DB strings is much higher than electric bass strings. You need to ensure that the string end is secured under the string as it winds around the peg. This is vital as when you bring the string to tension the string can slip, which can be very frustrating indeed (also means you'll forever be out of tune! You'll also need to work in order. Don't remove all four strings at the same time as the sound post can fall over (which isn't good!).

It's all about what you can trademark. I guess Fender didn't take the threat from copies seriously when they were cheap and bad - they gave people a taste for the guitar and aspire to a Fender one day. The lawsuits started flying when Japanese manufacturers started making products better than the origina and they could no longer own the Stra, Tele, Precision or Jazz shapes as they were ubiqutous, but the scroll headstock was a feature they could control. Must have been an interesteding meeting when they decided they'd be better off licensing out the Fender name and just take a percentage - amazing how quickly a knock-off copy becomes a MIJ. I'm sure there are lots of lessons here.

In my quest for basses Neck from ebay 70 quid, its actually very pretty wood and has set up well Was trying to get the colour metal flake gold but has come out way too dark. I've bought and sold basses using bank transfers, here and in Europe, pre B***** of course. It is a leap of faith but as I only buy and sell on Basschat and you can get a feel for the situation if you know the person or have seen them around for awhile. I probably wouldn't get into a sale with someone who had only just joined, or had no history. My preferred process is to meet up with cash. I've driven to Birmingham, Brighton and Margate and a few places in between for the right gear.

I've used bank transfer when collecting basses (and motorcycles) in person, and when selling basses (and motorcycles) and they've been collected in person. In those cases, we did the transfer on collection.

I've found I almost always need to adjust my EQ between sound check and the start of the gig, because most often you are sound checking in an empty room and (hopefully!) the room will be full of people at the start and throughout the gig, which obviously affects how you as an individual (as well as considering bass is omnidirectional) and the rest of the band as a whole, sound. Not disagreeing in any way just adding another point to hopefully reinforce and further illustrate yours.

For a private sale I’d expect 50-60% of the new price, both for selling and buying. If the bass can no longer be bought new it gets less straightforward, fashion and general desirability come into play. I think one of the reasons the marketplace on Basschat appears turgid is that sellers are asking inflated prices. The Fender JMJ Mustang is a good case in point. I’ve never dealt with a shop to sell or buy a used bass, but what @Ed_S says sounds realistic.

That would mean that any bass from before 1995 is considered vintage and I don't think most Fender fans will agree with you on that But it's weird. When I started playing in 1999, pre-1980-ish was already considered vintage. 26 years later, it's still pre-1980. For me and most people I know anyway.

You're right Steve, none at all, likewise PayPal friends and family. If in doubt always use the standard PayPal with fees which allows you to secure a refund. This of course - ironically - means that as a seller you have to also be. a little careful who you sell to if using standard PayPal

The vast majority of trades on here go off effortlessly with both parties being happy. We have had a tiny handful of problems over the years, as one would expect with any site. Our quick guide is here Advice for Buyers and seller but I would always just say, even the slightest doubt and wait for a better deal. Personally, I have only ever done bank transfers face to face when collecting or selling the gear.

I think it looks fine, for me it's the edges as much as the flat surface that bring the sense of authenticity, and those edges look good to me Brian. Some pickguards really do look rubbish and are to be avoided by all conscientious bassists, but given the majority that aren't, it's best not to overthink them or we find ourselves in a situation in which no pickguard is ever good enough

Indeed ask for a bit of evidence, and maybe do a video call where the seller can show the bass. It's also wordt checking out the feedback for the seller on this site and/or elsewhere. Ive used banktransfer mostly for trades on here, and never had any trouble.

Well tonight was a first for me as I've never jammed with a guitarist and a drummer before as we've had a challenge finding one to group up with (my brother in law is a drummer which is handy and together we've been practicing for about 5 months) Think I held my own to be honest but I did have sheets for each song on my iPad in eyes view and had an issue with my clip on tuner but apart from that it went great and certainly something to work on. 9 full songs in the bank with Eyes of a Panther by Steel Panther a firm band favourite.

Personally I would say £400 tops in the above situation.

I would always concede to whoever had it first and move on. There are always other names and the potential for a mess is great if you persist with someone else's name. I would be embarrassed to add a "The" or an s, it always makes me think poorly of other bands who have done it.

I’ve only been exploring them for a few months. This Grand Slampegg is really nice. Really like the Shift Line Olympic and the Origin BassRig 64 Black Panel too. It’s got out of hand! (And that’s not including the 8 other (soon to be 9) Source Audio pedals.)

I did my regular Wednesday Bandeoke this week. Usually I take a small, light rig, for convenience as much as anything. However I watched Bass The World's review of the new Orange valve head yesterday, and it gave me a hankering to enjoy a proper amp. So tonight I used this set up and it was an unforgettable experience. A bass you can feel as much as hear, a tone to die for, it was worth every ounce.

Admittedly guitar factory wages aren't high but it's hardly slave labour. If you're in the 'Land of the Free' and work for Ernie Ball you can expect $16ph, work for Fender in Corona and it's $18ph. For a comparison, the In-n-Out burger bar down the road from the Corona plant pays a starting wage of $22ph. It's just factory work so workers get factory wages. Over in Zheng'an, China the cost of living is 1/5th that of California but the guitar factory folks are on $4.5 - $5. There a few reason why bosses there pay a bit better. It's home to 130 guitar factories, if next door pays more you risk losing your workforce 🙂 If none of you offer OK money then you all risk losing your workforce to the big cities. Prior to the Guitar Park opening 25% of the county's migrant workers were in the big city guitar factories, keeping them happy and productive is now vital to the local economy. Exception to the $4.5-$5 rate is Zhang Weiyi. His place produces about 180 guitars per year but they carry $8000 price tags, he needs the cream of the crop for his work force 👍 South Korea has a higher cost of living than China but still much lower than the US. $9 - $9.25 is the going rate there.
