  1. We supported Original Punks, 999 at a cosy little pub (The Victoria) in Birmingham. It's probably about 100 people max allowed in! Unfortunately, I had The Cold From Hell (first for years!) - I'd got over the aches'n'chills and was on the dribbling and feeling a tiny bit less duff stage. I even wore a mask in the car to make an attempt at protecting 2 of my bandmates who were getting a lift from me, though who knows? Anyway, deliberately arrived only half an hour before we were due to go on as it was line check only, after we finally managed to get the previous band off stage (they took forever unplugging a guitar and bass, possibly to to over-refreshment) and found a space for my Markbass 4x10 with Crown PA head (firing across the stage!), plus a little niche for me, my Wal and Helix to stand in, we could get going. And despite the venue being tiny, and everything mic-ed/DI-ed up it was not too loud (unheard of!) and sound was great both on and off-stage. Cheers Mr Soundman! I was also very pleased with a new patch I'd made with some GK drive and Ampeg sound in parallel and mixed with a spot of reverb compressed both front and back end - it cut through beautifully and I managed to get far more of The Funk into our songs than usual (normally, as the sound is an overloud unholy mess there's no point!), which was nice! Crowd were very appreciative, though being mainly Original Punx Of A Certain Age too there wasn't much dancefloor action. Still, we sold some merch, and one of the CD buyers insisted on us all signing it. Fame!!! Sneaked off immediately afterwards making sure that everyone had congratulated me for being a brave soldier, to discover that the Hagley Road was closed, meaning teh quickes way was via M6, M54 and Much Wenlock, probably 20 miles extra. But rewarded myself with a rather fine dram of Ludlow single malt whisky.

  2. Haven't gigged since march, but we released a new album yesterday and had a launch party gig in London at the fiddler's elbow. Typically fraught and hectic as we were managing the night, but blew the cob webs off and played pretty reasonably.   3. We played at the Fox and Hounds, nr Watford, last night. Small but appreciative crowd, particularly after the football had finished. Like most of our gigs recently, the crowd gets more enthusiastic as the night goes on, no doubt helped by beer, and for the last few songs people start dancing. This was the first time I had taken the Reverend Decision P out for a gig; I love this bass.

  4. Katy Hurt and The Jackson Line at Sutton’s Sound Lounge. A wicked little cafe/bar/venue with a great vibe, a great bunch of guys running it and unfortunately last night a dicky PA. One monitor was swapped and then the replacement failed during our set, at least one PA too went as well. Poor sound man Jono was having a night to forget! And I managed to unplug the lead from my bass to pedalboard between tuning and hitting the first note of the first song about 30s later, cue embarrassing scuffling around.. Apart from that, what a fun night. The Jackson Line, much like Gasoline and Matches last week, are a lovely bunch of people and play some great songs with amazing tight vocal harmonies. And despite our technical and idiot bassist gremlins we had a blast. Old and new songs played to die hard and new fans, a really cool vibe onstage and between band and audience.   5. It was ok, a local ish venue that was new to us. Nice enough folks and warm reception. Some of our lot travelled the 40 mins or so to see us. We used the in house rig and engineer, so I took a Headrush for monitoring rather than trust a stranger with my IEM feed. I’m Still ‘running in’ my new bass. It’s had a few ‘quirks and features’ which have taken some fixing, and at an acoustic gig this afternoon its issues reared their head again, despite it being fine last night. It’s going back to bass hospital for another check up next week. just noticed singer is missing in the bottom pic, which means it must have been taken during ‘figure it out’

  6. Hi guys, selling this beautiful Roscoe LG5 in custom red bought from Bass Direct early last year - it just doesn’t get played as I have too many and need to offload. Bass is in great condition for the age, some minor scratches and the colour is gorgeous - photos simply don’t do it justice. It is all original apart from the upgraded Babicz bridge - I should have the original somewhere but until I manage to find it let’s consider it’s not available. This gets you one of the best boutique finger style sounds out there and they were hugely popular in the 80-90’s on the US session scene - for a reason. Strings are nearly new MarkBass coated, action is low, feels smooth and easy to play. As far as I remember weighs around 4kg - will try to check it next week. Not looking for any trades. Not willing to ship - but happy to deliver within 100 miles of west London for petrol money. Also have somebody in Birmingham I can leave it with if needs to. Bass comes with a moulded case.

  7. Decided I'm going to actively look for gigging work again, if anyone will have me at my advanced age. To that end, and because I just happen to have the wherewithal at the moment, I've ordered a Squier Sonic P-Bass in Cali Blue, two sets of Fender flats (the real Fender needs new strings!), a decent Speakon cable, and... a second Barefaced One10 with cover! So, have a small, light, versatile rig that won't endanger all the metalwork in my back. Still only using the Elf, but it will give me the option of a 500W amp should I need it. Also means I can put the entire rig in a Smart Car, with room to spare. Not that I have something that small... I know it's not quite Christmas yet, but it feels a bit like it. Yay!

  8. If you're 'into' carpentry, of course it can be done, but isn't it better to sell the combo 'as is' and buy yourself a more suitable rig for your needs..? Just a thought.

  9. Son Of Pea Turgh’s New Bass Day! My son absolutely loves Royal Blood - been to see them twice, he knows all of the songs, and has mostly been nicking my Toby pro 4 (the cheap 90’s licenced one), playing it through an elaborate pedalboard and dual amp set up. Nails the sound. He got a job in a local rehearsal studio and saved up to buy a Junior Jet - the final piece of the puzzle! I found one on eBay collection only and convinced the seller to post. Sorted. It turned up this afternoon (two days early - bonus), and oh my… Really nicely set up, low action, looks brand new. Fitted with D’Addario flats (a preference he’s picked up from me). Padded gig bag too. Plays soooo nicely. Sounds great. Heres a screenshot of the video I sent him when he was in school to let him know it arrived safely 😂

  13. IMO rooms are less of a problem when you have a good signal chain and sound worse when you are trying to put too much bass in your sound. I buy amps that sound good with the controls at 12 o'clock and run them through good cab(s). My sound is more low mids than bass, so even the worst rooms only need a minor EQ change, that's 2 mins max.

This is a great bass which somehow a friend persuaded me to sell it to them during one of my "not that bright" moments I have since come to my senses and bought another that looks very, very similar 😁 The bass weighs 3.9kg (yeah I'm sad....I keep records...lol) Here's a photo I took in the Scottish sunshine when it had the original bridge.   15. I used my final test to discover that it's a mere cold or perhaps flu. Though last time I had COVID (a year ago) I was under the weather for a day, this has been going since Tuesday and still feeling duff! Perhaps COVID jabs work! Or perhaps this happened to be my nemesis ManFlu... My Mrs has it now and is showing a slight sniffle! Still, it proves you can use a Wal for punk!!!!

  16. @LukeFRC that was the most bizarre metaphor. I got it though. my lad (a city fan…🤮) is hinting that the sky blue bedroom and “Etihad Stadum” road signs etc are destined to go soon. And @three you are wonderful as ever, far too nice to me 😂 I actually restored an old Framus for a mate this week. During that process I bought spare strings. im going to spend today restringing - something about new string day always inspires. Then I’m at a 40th where an old band mate is due to attend. We’ll see.

  17. With demanding work and two small kids and an upcoming house refurb project keeping my playing at home ticking over feels like an achievement in itself. Basses are fun and there’s enjoyment in trying gear, but that gets odd when you’re not using it regularly. but I’m atypical I think, my creative outlet is through my work, and playing bass is what I do to relax and use a different part of my brain - I’m reality piano would probably be better if I would be disciplined enough to sit and learn. it’s not a bad thing to not care as much any more, and put your energy elsewhere. Where that must become odd feeling is if part of your conscious or unconscious identity is “hi I’m Andy - I’m a musician” - that has to be positively reprogrammed to be something else. And it probably isn’t easy to do that.

  18. I have mentioned this mob before. Via a recommendation on here, I used Overland Express multiple times. The one time I had a problem (not their fault, Richtone music problem) they couldn`t have been more helpful even getting the original APC driver to call into Richtone and sort it out. They use various shippers and we all know they all have their problems from time to time but they are at the end of the phone or e mail and they went the extra mile to sort out this issue. Much better than dealing with a bot on a computer. These sometimes cheap couriers are great until something goes wrong with your bass worth a load of cash. I have no connection to OE by the way, just found them to be good.

  23. Enfield Fusion Jazz body with 2xQuad PUPs, Badass, 3-band Glockenlang EQ with various push/pull options also. If you want to build a versatile bass, this does everything from Flea BSSM era to Flea Stadium Arcadium era, to Jamerson, to Stanley Clarke, to Bernard Edwards, to..... I could make this simpler by saying that if they played a Precision, a Jazz or a 'Ray, this bass can probably do it! Nicely aged natural oil finish, everything fully functional and undamaged.   25. I'd say you're fine, as the only people who'll be listening to you are those close to the stage. The rest of them near the bar aren't there to hear you, they're there to drink and with any luck not go home alone. I've played many places like that where if there was any comment about the sound it was that it was too loud and was interfering with people's conversations at the bar.

  26. Sometimes it can taking something unexpected to make you reassess. Some years ago I was in a covers band that played 20+ gigs a year and got plenty of repeat bookings from pubs and local charity festivals. Then I had a family catastrophe (involving my special needs stepson) and all external activities went on hold. The band were really understanding and got in a dep. The assumption was I'd go back in due course. A while later once things at home were back on an even keel I realised I didn't want to go back. The band were great - the others all better musicians than me and I'd been lucky to be taken on by them. But I gradually realised that, although this had been my lifelong dream (to be in a band), there were niggles that had started to grate - as the new boy I felt obliged to get us gigs, to do the bulk of the loading in and out, to play songs I didn't like, the endless waiting around, etc. Nothing serious in itself. But, above all, I realised I just didn't like playing live. I loved our weekly 3+ hours rehearsals. But playing live either terrified me (can I play this song?) or, increasingly (once I could play the songs), just bored me. I dunno why. It just did. Anyway, long story short: I worked out that I loved deconstructing and learning bass lines but - like Neil Peart in Rush - the live stuff was an encumbrance. So I ditched the idea of being in a band (that one had been plenty good as it was) and created setlists of music I like to play from Karaoke Version UK. I now play 1-2 hours a day on my own and absolutely love it. I'm a better bass player than I ever was in the band. Will I go back to being in a band? No. Will I give up playing? Never. Edit: forgot to say - the point of all of this is that, but for the family event, I would never have left the band - I would never have questioned why I was increasingly unhappy in it or dared to tell the others I was off....

  28. Imagine you're a massive Man City fan. You go to every game, home and away. When you were younger you even played for the youth team. You're in the fans group. You have all the kit to wear, plus the training kit. You talk for hours online on forums about City, you wake up and you check the socials for news about city, you own nothing red, you listen to Oasis every day, your ring tone is "aaguerooooo" and you have dreams you wouldn't tell the wife about of Haaland. If we cut through your heart it would probably be tattooed with the City badge. But one day you wake up beneath your bedsheets (sky blue, but not the official club ones, because even your wife has limits) in your Man City pyjamas look at the a signed picture of Pep above your bed, and one of Colin Bell on the bedside table along side you and get up. You pull open the curtains to see the dour grey rain that Manchester is famous for and the realisation hits you that you're just a extra in the background of a petrostate's soft power initiative, and paying for the privilege. So what do you do? Probably take a bit of time away from City, maybe try purple bedsheets. Redecorate. Relax. the thing is you probably still like watching city, and with time maybe even go to a few games again. But at that stage, on that grey wet morning the end state is uncertain, maybe you will, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll start playing again, maybe you'll end up doing something else. You just need time to reconfigure work it out. (Know Andy just well enough to know the football metaphor will make his day him vomit _)

  30. I think that the concept of a double flat comes from the need to use each note name once and once only in a scale in that key. So if you have already used the E (as an Eb), the next note up has to be an F something. David

  32. Every room at every gig is different and it’s always fun (NOT!) EQ-ing for 15 mins or more. What’s everyone’s ’start from scratch’ strategy? I personally put everything on flat and turn the bass knob nearly all the way down and get the best tone with my bass with small adjustments of mids and trebles and then adjust bass and stage volume accordingly during a couple of complete band soundchecks. I seem to find too much bass ruins everything and simply swamps everything with boomy mush.

  33. Solo acoustic guitar and vocal gig at the Organ Grinder real ale pub at Loughborough. Had some gremlins in the first half - one speaker not working and the other one buzzing annoyingly. Got it sorted at half time and the culprit seemed to be a pedal power supply! Nice crowd, some good singing along and made feel very welcome! Update - buzzing traced to the shredded cable on my Boss pedal adaptor. That’ll do it then…

  34. Fender Custom Shop Jazz in relic blue sparkle. I like the stack knobs mainly with Neck PU vol full on, tone backed off about 10% and bridge vol slightly rolled back, tone up - gives a nice bark. This is a very full sounding Jazz bass.

  35. You could make a vertical tower box and transfer the whole kaboodle over to it, corners and all. Tilt and roll handle. The problem with making a bunch of small boxes is the horn unit is configured for all three.

  36. This - both the serious advice, and the quip about nobody is listening. If someone with authority and knowledge tells me it is too bassy , or loud, I will make changes. But often that is using "Lee Sklar's Producer Switch" - make a change to something that others can see, but most of the change comes from using a different playing technique. That way, I still have (say) the volume to compete with the band and the congregation, and it is available to me simply by digging in harder, or playing over the neck pickup rather than the bridge.

  42. I finally ran the Elf at it's limit last night. Lancaster Music Festival, I'm on foot, Bass in gig bag, amp and leads in pocket of gig bag, Barefaced One10 in hand, easy commute and walk in. The pub wasn't big, but it was rammed and noisy with punters. The band is drums, bass, guitar, sax and trumpet. No vocals, just jazz instrumentals, some standards and some more modern groovy stuff. PA is small and just for horns. I had the master on full, and pre-amp at noon, but it performed admirably and it was enough, but I have found it's limit I think, through this cab anyway. If I'd had a second One10 it would have been a different matter I think. I'm seriously considering getting a BF Super Compact for extra oomph. Rob

  48. My finest upgrades are probably in my Star Bass. Got a MIK ProSeries Star Bass 5 for real cheap in 2020. First thing I changed was the stupid strap pin at the heel. Relocated it to the upper horn. It helped both with neckdive and most important with the bass facing down when strapped thru' said heel located pin (can't describe how much this sucks, sucks the same in my Epi EB0, but it's somewhat more tolerable due to its nimbleness). I drilled a pilot hole... ...filled the tip of the upper horn with epoxy using a syringe, then screwed the the pin in and left it headstock down to cure. Absolutely solid. I managed to take this photo of the inside of the horn with a mirror and a mobile phone thru the upper f-hole. You can see the solidified pool of epoxy and the tip of the pin screw back there. Then I also added an "armrest" to play more comfy when seated. Yes, it's crappy foamy rubber cornering, the kind you put on furniture edges/corners when you have little kids. Comfy a/f to play seated now. Finally, I don't like VVTT at all, so I changed it to a VVT arrangement, with a tone cap selector rotary switch (values 10, 20, 32, 43 & 57 nF), much more useful now. Chickenhead knob for the win! I also did a mod to both my Stingray5s (both pre-2008, 3-coil ceramic pickups) to be able to use the neckside coil on its own (from factory, the single coil -plus phantom- position gets the bridge side coil sounding). With the use of a 4PDT switch I swap the bridge for the neck coil and also invert its coils/change its phase (so that it'll still be humcancelling with the phantom coil). Barely noticeable in terms of timbre to the untrained ear. Made a world of difference to me (was using the single coil position, now this is definitely MY Stingray5 tone). It's like a slightly P'ish Musicman (a more mid/lo-mid focused tone), close to the series tone, but throatier. You can hear al 4 positions here, the 3 stock ones and the neckside coil one.
