  1. Hi there I am selling my Lipstick Red 18V Kubicki Factor bass from 1988 (1124 09 88). This bass has been setup with a really low action and plays exquisitely. For a 35-year-old bass, the condition is amazing. The paintwork is near perfect and there are no dings or scratches to speak of. The only two things to point out is a bit of buckle rash on the back of the bridge and a bit of dark red blush on the bottom edge of the body near the input jack. I only just noticed it when taking the photos so it really isn’t obvious at all (I've tried to show the blemish in a couple of photos). Due to the great condition, I am asking £2,950 GBP. These basses are $5,000 new and dont have the Kudos of being made by Phil Kubicki and his small team in Santa Barbara. I am selling because I have a couple of Dingwall basses which I now play and I dont like moving between fanned frets and regular. My top class luthier has ensured the action is nice and low, checked the electronics are serviced and a new jack barrel has been installed. Its 100% gig ready. Its a reluctant sale but I gig infrequently these days and it would be sad for a bass like this to sit in its case year after year. I am located in the UK (North West England - so Preston/Lancaster/Manchester/Liverpool) and ideally I'd prefer collection in person. However, if the buyer wants to go to to the trouble to arrange all the postage so someone just collects from my door - at their cost, I will ensure its packaged securely.   2. If you know me, you'll know that I've tended to convert my passive basses to active via the addition of John East circuits; I reckon I'll installed maybe ten Uni-Pres in total (not all mine). About three years ago I put a Uni-Pre 3 in one of my Lulls (the JAX/NRT); the installation wasn't that straightforward to be honest, just problematic. John and I had a loooong conversation over the phone; he gave me a diagnosis that proved 100% correct (it was unrelated to the Uni-Pre and was actually a ground-wire issue on one of the pickups) and I fired up the soldering iron and repaired it while we were speaking. Oddly, the bass itself was generally fine, there was an intermittent issue where if I fiddled with the stacked mid controls too much the bass would make a noise not dissimilar to a theremin until I tapped the mid-pot a few times. Given the reliability issues, I tended to lean on other basses and left the Lull at home, thinking that at some point I'd just get another Uni-Pre and just swap it out. I decided to give John a shout. We exchanged emails, he advised me to take the mid-pot out of the circuit (there's a little jumper that allows this), remove it and send it off to him. I did this and a couple of days later I got the pot back (with a clean bill of health) and a new wiring loom. All fitted. Fantastic. I'd wager the bass actually sounds a little different too. I'd just like to convey that John's customer service here is off the chart. Legendary. I really have no doubt that had the issue been with one of the bigger manufacturers (ie EMG/Aguilar), I wouldn't even have got a reply from their service teams given the age of the part, but John seems to thrive on this stuff. He's all over Talkbass threads. 100% legend. What a bloke.

  3. So Damo And The Dynamites had a residency at this year's British Motor Show in Farnborough, where we played on a sponsored stage under a (thankfully thoroughly waterproof) canopy. The pub benches provided for picnicking attendees proved to tempting for @Happy Jack...

  4. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one of these incredible basses. In the opinion of many (me included) the Gillett Contour is the most desirable hollow-bodied bass guitar ever made. The design is revolutionary, the craftsmanship literally stunning, the ergo's unique, and the sounds deeply satisfying. I am lucky enough to own two of these beauties and can't justify keeping them both as all I play nowadays is classic rock. These basses have earned many review plaudits, of which the last and best was when the guys from Bass Gear mag in the USA named the Contour 'Best Bass In Show' at the 2019 Summer NAMM in Nashville. Not bad for a brand they'd never even heard of before they visited the Gillett Guitars stand! The key features are: 31.75" medium scale; through-body stringing; active electronics with neck pick-up and piezzo under bridge; sculpted blocks front and back accommodate forearm and rib-cage/beer gut; the way the bass is designed and built produces incredible levels of sustain. Price includes hard case but excludes delivery. Happy to meet up anywhere along the M5 corridor between Bristol and Exeter or similar distance/journey time.

  5. NOW £250 A deteriorating arthritis condition in by left hand has forced me to play short scale basses exclusively. Consequently, I am downsizing the herd. THIS IS NOT A FENDER. Here I have for sale a Bitsa project based on my year of birth and on a Mike Lull 51'P The body is a Guitar Build two-piece mahogany 54’P profile finished in multiple coats of True Oil with a Lindy Fralin split 51’P 5% over wound pickup. The bridge is a Fender USA bridge taken from my 1994 Fender P Deluxe. The loom is a @KiOgon CTS V & T and Switchcraft socket. The neck is an aftermarket maple bound "J" neck with block inlays. This is a fantastic bass to play and has an Ole School vibe that hugs your body. There is a full storyline on this build in the Build Diaries section

  7. As my esteemed colleague Mr Blank has just so eloquently answered the questions @BigRedX has, could I just point out... The "in jokes" are only in jokes because those of us whom contributed in the beginning, had broadly the same sense of humour. They are not meant to exclude anyone and if , as a newcomer, somebody wants them explaining we are more than happy to do so.. My alter ego of Dr Mondeaux for example (the one where I am probably responsible for hurting your brain... because of my ridiculous phonetic spelling ,meant to imitate Parker of Thunderbirds fame, using a Nottingham accent...sorry about that), came about because I was meeting @Teebs in real life to go to a gig in his area, and I jokingly said "don't worry I'm not going to be harvesting your organs." I happily ignore just about everything else on Basschat because I got the information I was after shortly after joining, and I have no interest in the minute details of, ownership, playing, or the recording of bass, or any other instrument. The DOI kept me sane during lockdown...I live alone ,have health issues and was getting more and more depressed...so I am grateful that @ped allows it to flourish. I hope we don't bother the mainstream members too much!

  8. The SB-2 is Leo Fenders final design on the P-J. Smaller bodied than a precision is easier on the neck. This is one of the first run versions and is just amazing, the build quality is excellent with the now discontinued rosewood board..along with a trans orange finish, also now unavailable. US hardware and pickups (the industry renowned MFD pickups). The output is huge and great tonally. One unusual design difference is the bass has one volume per set of pickups and no treble . Balancing the tone is a very simple blend of the p pickup (bassier) and the J pickup (treble...ier) volumes. There is an easy mod to make it like a p-j or use stack knobs, but i never felt there was a need. Really a great gig instrument, lighter than a p bass, easy on the neck and back. Finally it has a hipshot detuner a great upgrade to the four stringer format. I cant say enough good things about these. Leo Fender said it was his best bass design. A players instrument for sure.   11. I feel differently in that I have no problem with scrolling past things I don't fancy engaging with. Of the 25 threads currently on the first page of Off Topic, I may delve into about six of them, and occasionally have a look at one with an interesting/bizarre title e.g. "Are those my feet?". The mods on here could tell us if it would be easy to rig up a system where you could have the option to hide a thread but it sounds like it could be a lot of unnecessary hassle for them. That's just my guess, I don't know, I'm not a computer systems person. Again, I can only reiterate it's probably best to ignore the threads you have no interest in. It seems the simpler option. I sympathise regarding some posts that make your brain hurt. In the DoI we have to cope with the unusual stylings of @Ricky 4000 😁

  12. Couple of shows at Greenman festival over the weekend, one a mini show for some TV/social media thing and a full show on the Sunday. The Ampeg sounded awesome behind me and stage sound was pretty perfect. Nice big crowd, good weather and a lot of fun 😊.

  16. I suppose it was a little bit over the top, bit I simply don't "get" the DOI thread. Every so often I dip in to seem what is happening, but to me as an outsider it just comes across as a clique with it's own set of in-jokes, and seemingly no connection between the various posts. I wouldn't even begin to know how to make a contribution. I suppose what I really want is the ability to hide the thread from me permanently. I would have said the ability to hide all of "Off Topic" is what is needed but very occasionally there are threads in there that I am able and want to, make a contribution to.

  17. Now £1500!! - £1400 - £1300! or close offer!! £1200.00ovno. (This really is the last price drop, I'd rather keep it than give it away). This is a 1973 Gibson EB3 bass. It was originally cherry red but has faded to more of a walnut colour over the years. It plays and sounds really good, with a lovely neck, decent action, negligible fret wear and everything works as it should. At some point in the distant past, before my time, it sustained some damage around the jackplug area, which caused the cracking (see photo) (Possibly caused by someone tripping on the guitar lead?). However, this has been very robustly, (but maybe not very prettily?) repaired, is solid as a rock and has zero impact on the playability or sound. I have personally used this bass in major recording studios (e.g. Olympic, British Grove), and it delivers exactly the sound one would expect from this classic bass. There's a bit of buckle rash and a few dinks and scuffs, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a 50 year old instrument. This is a players bass, not a pristine museum piece. This model would normally sell for at least £2K and up, but with the aforementioned damage I'm pricing it down for a quick sale. I can ship within the UK, but I would recommend trying the bass first. If you're in the market for a vintage EB3 but not ready to shell out megabucks, this could be your answer. Reason for sale; I am a pro player who is approaching retirement and I've now decided to thin my collection down to just the few basses I use frequently. Please PM me if you have any questions.   19. Yamaha BBP35. This is a reluctant sale as it’s a truly fantastic instrument and astonishingly well constructed. Would argue one of the best I’ve seen fit and finish from a production bass. Made in Japan, the top line of the current Yamaha BB range. Low B is superb, pickups incredibly well voiced, especially the P which I often keep soloed. It’s fitted in with virtually any gig I’ve taken it to. Resonant unplugged, bags of sustain, 6-bolt neck making it all very stable in its construction. The string though body also a nice addition. Why am I selling? Largely playing 4s and interested in getting something short-scale - I’ll be very sad to see this one go. Only trade I’d be interested in here might be a JMJ Mustang, other than that I’m just after a straight sale. Any questions on the bass do let me know!   20. Hi Folks, I’ve decided to move on my rather excellent looking (and playing) p bass by The Bass Monkey. I’ve had this a couple of months myself and bought from here too. I’ve had many p basses over the years and this one is certainly closest to a vintage and ‘worn in’ bass that I can tell. Having said that, I just don’t think I’m a p bass guy. Im not 100% sure what the bass is made from, but it has a Bareknuckle pick up and was put together by Walshy himself, as I believe! From what I know, this retailer at a much higher price when in his shop. For anyone looking for a JJ Burrell inspired bass, you can’t go far wrong with this. I’m looking for £500 (plus postage) which I what I paid for it. Have a proper box, so shipping within the UK is fine. I would be interested in trades for a Spector (NS2000, for example), or a midrange Ibanez SDGR(?) model. Based in Leeds and any trial is welcome. AB.

  24. I honestly think Dave that it is better to keep doing frequent gigs than the odd one with gaps between. For me I find your body gets into a ‘routine’ of doing it, and so long as you can get quality sleep most days it is more of a state of mind than anything else. For example, in the last ten days of July, I managed to do gigs in Bury St Edmunds (2 days), Scarborough, Hull, Swindon, Manchester, Sunderland and Beverley, plus a full day’s band rehearsal too. At 65, I do get the usual aches and pains but can fortunately overcome them most of the time - worst bit is getting out of the band bus after a 5 hour journey!

  25. I can attest to this. I used a hole saw with a hand drill rather than a pillar drill. It was dangerous and stuff flew everywhere. Lesson learnt. For woofer cutouts I put a nail through the centre of the cutout, and rotate the wood around the nail, trying to keep the running jigsaw steady. I've ended up with some pretty good cutouts although I do say so myself.

  26. I do mine with a router using an arm, but it is a faff - lovely finish though A jigsaw and a steady hand works fine. You don't really see any wobbles as long as theyre not too wild. A new, narrow blade helps with the cut. Slow and steady wins the race.... I've also got a bigger, souped up version of the image attached. It's probably as old as I am and was always in the toolbox in my dad's garage. I use this with a pillar drill though. I wouldn't fancy trying it with a hand drill....

  28. Afternoon lads. Thread resurrection, eh. Despite the age of this thread and the time since my procedures, my hands are issue free and in great shape. I'll pass on the same advice. Always decline the steroid shot and opt/push for the operation in all instances.

  35. Record digging win of the century was finding a SIGNED Wurzels album in CYPRUS. I tried getting a fiver off because it was scribbled on. He pointed out that (a) it was definitely signed and (b) "no one else is going to buy that shite" so I got a fiver off anyway. Win win all around I'd say

  41. Our gig on Sat was an early start for a Sat at 7:30 and due to finish 10:15pm because of noise complaints from neighbours. Here's me expecting to be home easily for 12pm. We ended up finishing at 10:30pm at request of audience to carry on. Everything packed up and loaded by 11:15pm. Had to sit around for approx 30mins until 11:45 before we got paid and bar was completely empty. I was expecting to be home for midnight but almost 1am. Its only an hours drive for me too. The things we do for enjoyment. Its a great wee venue that we play regularly and i'm not sure how long she's going to be able to keep putting bands on. It annoys me when people move next door to a bar that has live music and then complain about noise. They now have an excuse that due to pandemic they got used to weekends being quiet. Dave
