  1. 1979 Musicman Stingray - £1550.00 Selling this beast which I bought from bass direct about a year ago for £1750.00. It's class but sees very little action as I play a P bass almost exclusively live. The Moses Graphite Neck is very comfortable, well fitted and plays like a Jazz neck in terms of the profile. Comes with a hard case and the original fitting plate for the neck and screws etc. I can send at the buyers expense if you like, or anyone is more than welcome to come and try it for themselves here in Middlesbrough.

  4. I took a risk recently and sold off my Stingray 5 and Rivoli and have ended up with this from Bass Direct. It’s a 2021 Nash PB-J 63 in Fiesta Red. Apparently the first owner already had too many basses. Lucky for be though as it plays like a dream and sounds amazing…

  6. Oh it's nothing to do with like or dislike. I find your weird trolling incomprehensible. I have read the whole of this thread and, as a founding member of the DOI, I can report that I find @Osiris ancient Egyptian God's expositions on Wellingborough an easier read. I couldn't care less about the history of funk bass players either... I only came here for the free buffet. Carry on!

  7. I bought myself a couple of bass books (I can't help it, I am a bookworm). But my real self-present was this beauty: You can't figure out how happy I am with it. Or maybe you can indeed...

  9. Price is ONO - no trades - need to thin the herd. This was my main touring bass for 2 years - it has been gigged heavily and has some wear - some of which is uglier than others. The 'nice' wear is the belt rash on the back - this has worn through the Penny top layer, to the silver underneath, and down to the wood, and looks (in my opinion) great! The urethane finish on these wasn't quite so thick as some of the Fender Poly finishes, so it ages nicely. The 'less nice' wear is on the upper edge above the bridge, where it has a number of dings from being bumped into a Scott Dixon triple bass rack. There's a number of chips here, tried to take some photos of it. Weight is between 8.2 and 8.4lbs on the bathroom scales... Electronics all work great, sounds lovely, has graced many large stages and festivals and I'll be sad to see her go, just doesn't get played any more. Prefer London meetup but can courier to UK mainland address. Any questions, give me a shout. Cheers Dave

  10. Up for sale is my BB1100s in natural/blond. It's a Japanese made bass and the serial number is KZQ0084 (I'm 95 per cent that's right - it's hard to see the letters stamped into the back of the headstock). This bass needs little introduction. Sounds great passive, but has capable active circuitry when required. She's just come back from a set up, so the action/intonation is good to go (for my finger style at least). 9v battery is relatively new. The bass is wearing DR Sunbeams which sound fantastic on BB1100s. They're OK, but not new. Condition of the bass is really good for an 80s instrument. The most serious battle wound is on the top edge (as you're holiding it) where there are a couple of dings. Please see photo 7 to assess them. Because the bass is blond they're less discernable, but they're there. Tuners work well and frets are in good condition. I don't have the kind of scales that can provide an accurate weight, but I've owned a couple of these and they all seem to come in at about 3.9-something kg. So circa 4kg I guess. If someone would like a more forensic weight I'll try to rig something up. I bought this from a BC'er several years ago without a hard case, so delivery (at buyer's expense) would be via the gig bag/bass box route. Pick up from either South Somerset or central London would be welcome. Any questions please ask, thanks.

  12. Up for sale is my 1995 Crafted in Japan Fender Jazz 1962 Reissue in Olympic white with matching headstock. It looks amazing and plays great. Everything is working perfectly, truss rod turns freely, pickups, bridge and electrics are original. This was originally a fotoflame finish but, as is their way, the finish cracked badly so it’s been stripped back and professionally refinished in nitrocellulose Olympic white. The headstock has been finished in matching white and the decal, although replaced, has no visible lines. It’s had an after market 4 ply 62 tort reissue pickguard fitted too. For those people who prefer a lightweight instrument, it’s great - I’m not sure on the exact weight as I don’t have scales but it’s the lightest bass I’ve ever gigged with. The nitro finish is starting to come through now, as displayed on the pics - this will age really nicely soon with some more gigging action! I can send via courier at the buyers expense or anyone is more than welcome to come and try it here in Middlesbrough.

  14. More progress... I'm giving the fretboard and body bound edges. The fretboard already had the rebate for this. The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that (due to a template mix up) I trimmed the fretboard too close to the 21st fret slot. On any other bass that would send it to the scrap box but in this case it adds to the character. I've added a new but of oak to remedy the situation. It shouldn't be too obvious on the completed bass , but if it is ...so what? I've sanded the front of the body, I'll oil and wax it after the binding has been installed. The worm holes are looking great!

  15. I think I finally understand. This thread is about grammar. Go back and check the title - Level 42 before Level42… It’s clear as daylight now - it is only correct to use “Level 42” and not “Level42” I blame all of those people doing the Macarena in Denmark.

  19. It's a real shame. A clear and dispassionate account of the times and any role the OP played in it would be informative. The apparent troll with a chip on their shoulder act serves no purpose and pretty much renders the thread pointless.

  20. Always.* *This is despite the moaning, groaning and threats of powdered mash. Without a daily peeling session, the day seems wrong somehow. We have some nice Maris Pipers and even some posh, little Anyas available. Fun fact - Mark King used to be the spud basher at a West End hotel, in order to top up his paltry wages at Macari’s.** **Not true in the slightest.

  23. I got a nice email yesterday - the bass is ready to ship. As it's my birthday in 2 days time this couldn't have worked out better. Paid the balance last night so hopefully it'll get dispatched today and arrive in time for it to be an unexpected birthday present

  26. I may reassure Mr @JapanAxethat the DoI has no association with this thread. Indeed, our guiding principles are a firm adherence to English as she is spoken, a penchant for clarity and brevity, and a fanatical devotion to the Oxford comma. That said, the 'Level 42 before Level 42' thread has excited the interest of the DoI's Faculty of Humanities; a team of our finest researchers are engaged in a deep-dive semiotic study, the results of which will be published in late 2022.

  28. Now £1395 Sadowsky MV4E Metro Express, made in Japan in small numbers before Warwick got hold of Sadowsky. This is not to be confused with the new RSD Metro Express basses which are made in China to a very different price point. This is practically identical to the two Sadowsky Metro MV4 basses I've owned previously. As it's an MV4 it has a lightweight ash body, maple fingerboard and an ultra smooth feeling nitro-finished maple neck. The finish is a lovely metallic Sage Green. The Japanese ME basses seem to be universally lightweight, and this one is no exception at 7lb 13oz or 3.54kg. It's in great condition but does have a very small paint chip on the forearm contour, I'll try to highlight this in the pictures. It comes with the Sadowsky Porta bag, and tools etc.

  30. I’ve only played the Ray34 not the 35, but not owned either. I’ve had more EBMM Rays than memory serves. To be honest, compared to a post ‘90 Ray I didn’t think there was as much difference in the Sterling and EBMM as the price difference would suggest. You can get EBMM Rays with nice figured necks as well as fairly plain (my ‘90 was fairly plain, my ‘02 was insanely figured). While many think the late 80s, early 90s Rays are much better than more modern, I can’t say that’s something I’ve found - unless you really must have the mute bridge. Realistically though, as you’re having these thoughts I think it will be an itch that you won’t be satisfied until you’ve scratched it...

  34. Exactly. Just as an aside the number four player in this picture is Bob Upandown who, after suffering a career ending leg injury, went on to be Cardinal Robert Upandown The Venerable Cloister of Naseby until his unfortunate demise in an incredibly slow road traffic accident outside Penge.

  39. That doesn't sound stingy at all. They give you up to 3/4 of the value of a high end guitar and then have to sell it at a lot less than list because it's pre-owned. Where is the profit? The only trade I've done was a bass for a bass at Wunjo. I think they gave me around half the original price of the bass and I was happy with that.

  40. From personal experience... If your guitarist is playing in drop D or C and you're going to be matching the riffs, a 5 string won't have you covered. Sure it will give you access to the notes, but it will likely be stiff and unconvincing, like a session player sitting in - playing the right notes but not inhabiting the riff. If you're playing around a riff in drop C, you need to have that big open note to bounce off - constantly playing off the first fret is really going to hold you back. When playing in this genre you often need that open root drone, and also need to the freedom to improvise around underneath the guitar solos. Not that every riff or solo will be in the same key as the tuning, but it generally is 😁 I also found that the looseness and rattle of a drop-tuned 4 string is helpful as that is exactly how the music should sound - stiffness and pinpoint accuracy is not what it's all about. There should be grease and swagger.

  41. Got a function gig on NYE, my first since lockdown, so about 2 years now. Decided not to bring the suitcase full of goodies I use for my Prog/fusion band, so got a 2nd small board and just put my core pedals on it.still plenty of sounds available and will put them back on the big board once finished.

  42. I think this is the "Hamberger" soundpost rather than the Anima Nova, which doesn't have the adjuster wheel. I have no idea how these compare*, but I've spent some time with the Anima Nova for violin and viola and the change in sound with post length/tension was a revelation to me after 20 years or so as a luthier. I'm pretty quick at fitting wooden posts, but even so I find my aural memory is too short to pick up the detailed changes in sound produced by ones of different length. With the carbon fibre posts it's quick and very obvious. * maybe the Hamberger sounds a bit Wimpy. Coat on, taxi called.

  43. As a veteran of Bassworld I can recall various members being disgruntled and joining Finnbass. I found it by chance and quite liked the vibe. In some ways it offered something which was starting to disappear from the Basschat predecessors, which was the sense that you knew almost all of the contributors. While there were a lot of knowledgeable people finnbass, it did not take itself that seriously. There were various people whose technical opinions I understood and would trust far more than most of the general web. I enjoyed the weird mix of some spikey characters who usually knew their stuff better than most. Yes it did have a bit of a recurring theme around the split from Basschat, but probably not as much as as Basschat people think. Both sides probably benefitted from forgetting the roots of the argument to be honest, I recall picking up various strands of it. None of it was terribly edifying as I recall, the on going digs did not really do anyone any favours in my opinion, but people are different and some people rub one another up the wrong way. Some of the refugees from other forums who washed up there could be abrasive, and a few were serial wind up merchants. Personally I threw in the towel around the time of Brexit, I just didn't need all the angst on line, that was not unique to Finnbass of course. I suppose many of us re-calibrated where we wanted to be around that time. I do not contribute on Basschat now, as I find it a bit too big, although I occasionally have a catch up. I only really came on here to say cheerio to any of the waifs and strays now wondering the web for a new home. It was fun while it lasted, stay safe people, be pleasant to one another and have fun.
