  3. I picked up a Squier Classic Vibe Mustang, in Surf Green, this week, delivered on Friday and as always with a new bass it seems 😉, I am loving it. It's not mega light at 3.88Kg, 8.55lb, with a good deal of that mass being in the body so it balances level on a strap. I use a strap when sat down too, I don't find balancing instrument on right leg comfortable. It's nicely resonant unplugged, which I have found with a number of Squiers, they are made from well chosen wood. The strings aren't awful to me as some people have reported, there are no obvious dead spots or oddly resonant notes and harmonics are bright and clear. The fretwork (narrow tall frets) is excellent, fit and finish 9.5 /10. From the serial number it's made, I believe, by Samick in Indonesia rather than by Cort. The very vintage gloss finish on the neck looks good to my eye and brings out the variations of colour of the maple, but those of sweaty hands might not like it, tbh I am undecided, if I keep it long term I may satinize it. But the tint does make the small fret markers disappear a bit, so long term I'd fit luminlays (maybe get someone to do that), for now a dab of white paint pen will suffice as it is easily removed. I had to adjust the bridge just a little (though I have kept a higher action (factory setting is 3-2.5mm) than I might as it plays fine as it is) and set the intonation of the G string; the nut is cut generously high but is fine for intonation of the first and second fret notes so I'll leave alone, maybe adjust once I've found the keeper string choice. I also adjusted the pitch of the pickups a little as E and G were too loud but a small adjustment has brought a good balance string to string. 38mm nut, well spaced strings, not too close to the edge of the board and 19mm at the bridge, neck is much like the top 2/3 of a Jazz, but upper fret access is pants because of the heel (body join is 14th fret), even though its only 19 frets I can't actually get to much above 15 with my short fat hand. I had a quick look inside the control cavity, no shielding paint, mini pots and .047mF poly tone cap, pretty much as you would expect from a Squier, I like the tone 80% off mostly, or 50% with the volume backed off a little and a little bit of gain pedal to colour and boost the output. But the tone is great, even across the strings and less bass/treble variation EA/DG than many Ps and Js I've played and the compact slab body (no belly cut or arm carve) is comfortable and the smaller size means that it's easy to move around with the fretting hand and palm muting and thumb and finger picking down by the bridge is easier than on a full size instrument I find. I haven't tried it with a pick/plectrum. I've only played it through my PJ practice amp. Overall I'd give it 8/10 with that new owner tinted glasses, got to justify the purchase to myself mindset. Other than the addition of a Toucan it is as yet unmodified, haven't even taken the scratch plate plastic off. Supplied by A Strings in Treforest as I had a Reverb credit to use, Andertons have stock again and are cheaper, but I am happy to also support a smaller independent who provided great service and equally quick delivery on this and previously when I needed odd strings to make up sets or odd parts and keep a bit of money in Wales.

  4. Is this worth a mention in the Vigier porn thread? My 89 Passion series 111, and my recently acquired 83 Arpege series1 Both are incredible instruments..Took abit of time to find an Arpege series1/11 funnily enough! Delighted to have this and quite possibly the best neck I have played on any bass, just amazing..Coming to terms now with how the electronics work.. Sounds great..In excellent condition, Replacing the cracked back control plate, known Vigier problem..cutting out a bit of plastic to size no big deal..So this is the second Arpege that I have owned..I had a series 1V..Wonderful bass all singing and dancing, the Glokenklang preamp..but I just feel the older through neck models have abit more in my humble opinion..This maybe nearly forty years old but still pretty groundbreaking in my eyes..Now what about a fretless.lol👍🤟😃

I’ve mostly been unable to attend due to life commitments, childcare, stuff HOWEVER my partner and two daughters have just got a horse and so disappear off to the stables every afternoon to do things horse-related. Normally I’d do DIY, shopping, prepare dinner and so I’ll ask if she has a problem with a day pass. I’m in credit right now as I’ve built them a field hay-box today and also set up a big electric fence from scratch mark me as a possible please

  9. Neck inserts done. I can’t get these screws in black, so it’ll have to be chrome. Neck volute carved, and I slightly chamfered the headstock edges to reveal the black veneer, same as the body.

  15. OK, must move on. Now £500, let's be 'avin you. I have two excellent compact, but powerful bass rigs, and, with the amount of gigs I have, this is completely unnecessary. My back is telling me to keep the Barefaced and my ears are telling me to keep the Ampeg! So the Ampeg loses out. The photos below show that it comprises two PN210HLF cabinets and the excellent PF800 amp which are all in very good condition and working as they should do. The cabs are rated at 550 watts each and each have an adjustable tweeter. They are 8 ohm cabinets. They come with Roqsolid covers as shown and have a few very minor scuffs in the very hardwearing finish. This set up is easily loud enough for small to medium sized venues and is very punchy with a surprising amount of bass as a result of the full width ports. The amp is super reliable and features compression, mute button, bass and treble quick boost buttons and a five way adjustable mid range control along with the usual controls. I'd prefer to deliver this for obvious reasons for shared cost. I'm not looking for trades and the price is firm. Collection also is an option, although we would have to wait for the relaxation of lockdown rules. Any questions please ask.

Up for sale is my Ashdon Little Bastard LB30 all valve amp. It says 30 Watts but they're big boy valve watts meaning this could be gigged for smaller venues. Easily loud enough for a back line head and with DI out perfectly gigable for bigger venues too. Only selling as I've bought an Ashdon Little Stubby 30w instead. Perfect working order, immaculate condition. Id guess it's not been gigged. Controls are High / Low inputs, effects send / return, mid control with frequency shift, bass with frequency shift, treble with bright switch, master volume and mute. Runs at 4 or 8 ohms. Cab now sold. Socially distant collection preferred but can deliver or meet up within a 50 mile radius of Bidston on the Wirral. Cab is sold so just up for straight sale now. Thanks for looking.

  17. The finish is quite similar to the Fender limited run sand blasted. The "marks" on the back are part of the Ash grain. 40mm nut, rotaries are Vol (push/pull active passive) treble cut or boost (acts as tone control in passive) bass cut or boost. New D'Addario nickel 40-100, new battery, new set up. It seems open pore finish is no longer available on this model. It would cost a minimum of £1250 with standard finish & gigbag. SUPER condition, very versatile for a P type, feedback available. £750 in hardcase collected from Darlington, or organise & pay for your own courier. Keep safe, Karl.

  20. I'm preferring the new design it's going to be a nice bass when finished! I agree with Mick you'll really struggle to come up with a completely unique design, I just take aspects of other basses I like and kind of mix and match them till I'm happy with the design...... 👍🏻

  21. TBH I preferred the original....but we all have different taste. It's going to be near on impossible to design something that doesn't bear some resemblance to something else...it isn't plagiarism to acknowledge a design you like (unless it's a Rick)

  30. Here's Freddie Washington playing 'Forget Me Nots' with Patrice Rushen at some open air event. He was the original bass player on the recording. He doesn't let up his concentration for the entire performance, and his playing is so clipped and precise - absolutely brilliant. Patrice Rushen is no slouch on the keyboard either, as this clip demonstrates later on. And I love how at around 4.30 she gets the audience to clap along ON the beat - I wonder why ? 😏 😄🙄

Sometimes quite the opposite, genres that I quite like often morph into something that I don't like occasionally they'll suddenly morph again into something listenable. 60s R&B (OK) and Jazz (not OK) > funk (OK) > disco (not OK) > Hip Hop (OK), add some dubstep (OK) and contemporary R&B and come up with drum and bass (no thanks). Obviously this is a little more simplistic than the roots of the genres but I think you'll get my drift.

  36. For me, because they were flats. I started playing bass because of guys like Chris Squire, John Entwhistle and the like. The full range sound and clarity of roundwounds was what I wanted. Moving on, all the funk and slap players also used rounds. The dull, thuddy, indistinct sounds of 1960s bass players were not for me. I have to say that I'm still the same. None of my basses are fitted with flatwound or tapewound strings. It's not that I dislike all flatwound tones but as soon as I play them, they don't feel or sound right to me. If I do follow this current trend, it would only be to use occasionally as an effect, essentially. @drTStingray - +1 on all the old bass style amplification. First decent rig I found after many, many changes was the Acoustic 370/301 setup. Interesting in that it didn't have the full range highs that I liked but but it delivered in punch and projection way beyond anything else I had found to that point.

  38. This almost broke my heart. What you have given us here so far Neil is gold dust. I write bass-only custom content for Rocksmith (anyone who isn't familiar with it, think Guitar Hero but for real instruments). When putting together a custom, I need a Guitar Pro file. This gives me two choices - I can either use a GP file found online, or I can spend an hour or two putting together my own file note by note. Given the quality of the GP files which are online, the second option applies 99% of the time. I've made customs of many Whitesnake tracks over the years and they're a lot more complicated to chart than your average bass line, so when I saw that you'd posted your own transcriptions of what you'd played on the recordings, it was like my birthday, Easter, Christmas and a Lottery win had all come at once. I could go back and fix all the parts I'd struggled to pick out. Some time ago, there was a request for a bassline on another bass forum. By chance, I'd previously produced a GP file for the song, so i posted it. I was torn to shreds by the Music Police there who said I'd got the time signature wrong (12/8 not 4/4) and I'd made the cardinal sin of not displaying the notes properly just as you did. I wasn't best pleased, as I thought I was doing someone a favour. At the end of the day, the guys and girls I produce the Rocksmith customs for don't give a toss about key signatures, time signatures or whether it's a single note or two tied together. All they want to know is where to put their finger and for how long. I guess quite a few people here feel the same way too. For what you've done so far, I really cannot thank you enough, and if you don't feel like posting any other scores then I think you have been more than generous enough to the bass playing community.

  39. Just my tupporth.. I have the Solo 3rd Generation, albeit going into Windows 10 and Reaper DAW. Excellent interface. Headphones all the way, and reasonable (I got some AKG second hand for about 25 quid) ones make the whole experience better both for tone and comfort. Using the headphones out of the Solo, press the button for Direct Monitor and mute your instrument track in the DAW. This makes it so much more possible to play in time with the track!

  44. Well...now there's a story... Not me for one I gave Matt the choice of the four configurations, and he chose one of the other ones. And I - ahhummm - had already cut it before I spotted Matt's question. Anyway, Matt has been extremely gracious and says he is equally happy with the way round I've done it. One for the 'ooops!' log I reckon. That said, it is going to look pretty splendid - this is one of the best figured walnut pieces I've come across in a long, long time. Here it is with a 5-string sized fretboard cutout: Once the proper finish is on, that figuring is going to positively come alive! Next step is to cut the oak blanks and order the neck laminates and bridge

  47. +1 : massively underrated IMO. '24 Hour Party' people is one favourite basslines ever. Paul's now living in the States has a great new band 'Big Arm' , happy, sober & drug free by all accounts. his old bass, that was used on the Monday's first two albums. It's been on Top of the Pops, videos & several times round the World back in the day. If only it could talk, bet it would have some 'interesting' stories to tell
