  1. I'm knocked out that my band (Lutz) have had our album listed on a couple of these top ten releases of 2018 things; I'm assuming this came out of the New Music Saturday podcast and a few people have just picked up on it. At the very least, it affords me a little smile after what has been a fairly traumatic year in which I lost my father-in-law, my mother and my job. [Edit: I also emerged from the wreckage of losing my band, the band I formed eight years ago, to a bunch of fairly unpleasant interlopers.] 2019 has got to be better, eh?

  2. ...well in a somewhat bizarre turn of events, I interviewed for a position last week and the agency just called and told me I'd got the position and start on the 17th. Amazingly, I'd initially turned the interview down, largely questioning my abilities, but the agency were told the decision was unanimous and I was head and shoulders over the other applicants. Feeling a bit happier.

  3. Drove up to fellow BC member FinnDave to purchase/collect a bass he was selling. Had a great chat for an hour; he's a top bloke...and the bass, an Epiphone Thunderbird Classic Pro IV with Babicz bridge and Gotoh tuners...wow, what a bass. It's immediately become my prime gigging bass. Awesome feel, action, sound, looks...the total package. And the neck's almost 2 inches shorter than my Burns Bison, perfect for my short arms. Thanks BassChat for hooking us up.

  4. I'm selling my Sandberg hardcore aged Masterpiece bass. The bass is in good condition (except for the dings and dongs ;-)). Comes with original Sandberg bag, strap (never used), 2nd (also aged) pickguard in black and tools. Due to the thermo and vibration treatment the bass feels and sounds like an old, well played bass. The response is great. No deadspots. Great punchy JB sound. Low action is possible. body is alder neck/fingerboard is maple passiv electronics, vol./pu blend/tone pickups are Sandberg the frets are like new Waiting is more than a year for a Masterpiece

What constitutes 'a good rig' could be debated until the cows come home, but I would agree... the best 'tone' or 'sound' or whatever you want to call it that I ever had was through an Ampeg SVT Classic with matching 8X10. Still chasing that sound, really. I'd use a fridge every time, were it not for the practicalities involved in moving the bloody thing from A to B. And back.

  9. Fodera Yin Yang Standard - £2750 I had this bass listed previously and withdrew it, but having moved back from university, and bought an MTD AG5, I really need to re-list this. Bought new around 4 years ago. One of the best 4 string bass I've ever played, but I simply have too many basses that are in a similar territory tonally, and prefer a 6 string for my jazz and solo gigs. The neck feels amazing. These basses truly are on a different level! A couple of marks and wear on the edges from a good amount of playtime, which are photographed. The video attached is from my channel, so it's the very same bass. Comes with the original Fodera case and Dunlop strap locks. No trades please, unless it's a Sadowsky, has 5 strings, and isn't black! Collection preferred from Maidenhead, Berkshire, but willing to meet people as I travel a lot for gigs.   11. Saw them in the mid 90s at the Huddersfield stadium (whatever they called it then). Brilliant summer's day and Stipey was doing his stuff as the sun was going down. Magical. Tanya Donelly was also on the bill and I was a huge Throwing Muses fan at the time. The main support was supposed to be Oasis but they decided they had got too big to be a support. Beautiful South stood in... I don't really like them but full marks for jumping in at the last moment... and they had a full brass section... always a mighty thing... huge roar went up when they played an Oasis song. Back on topic... must start listening to REM again. I even went to Athens Georgia and had meals in Weaver D's and at the Grit. It's a very neat University town and every male student looked like Stipe... some of the women did too.

  15. I think it might just be the light that is fooling you in to thinking the finish is shiny. I always try to get the bright sunlight light reflecting off the basses when photographing them to highlight the wood grain. Here is the latest one I finished:

  16. Basses (or any other instrument for that matter) only sound good on a recording in the context of the arrangement and production of the music. Take a listen to any of the many isolated bass tracks available on YouTube if you want to hear how different (and generally not very good) the bass sounds once you strip away all the other instrumentation.

  22. When I played (finished gigging 20+ years ago now) guitar in bands we only did pubs and clubs, and we didn't get fed. But I must admit, these days if I was faced with a big meal before a gig I would be asleep on my feet! I do recall one memorable occaision at Barrow Hill club (I think - it is 30 years ago now) when half way through the second set we were blasting away through something when the power went off to our stage gear, only for the concert secretary (do they still have them?) to mutter through his mike "T'pies 'ave come!". Virtually the whole audience left the concert room whilst we were powering up the amps hoping they hadn't been shafted to go and buy pies from this block who brought trays of them in from a van. What a classy place that was. They did provide half a dozen "broken" pies and pasties in our changing room though, which we scoffed whilst they were doing the bingo and meat raffles between our second set and last set. The delights of working men's clubs and Miner's Welfare clubs. What pleasures they were.

Tiran Porter with the Doobie Brothers - classic flatwound/pick thud, particularly on the albums Captain & Me, What Were Once Vices & Stampede. Guy Pratt with Toy Matinee. Ocatved Stingray goodness and groove for days!

  24. Why do vegans and vegetarians feel the need to make themselves sound special? I dont like fish or gammon for example so I'd just avoid it at a buffet, it's a buffet so you just take things you like, aren't allergic to or have moral issues eating. If there's nothing you like get a McDonald's on the way home! 😋

  25. Based in Herts, but can meet / deliver around London and home counties/Herts Beds and Bucks. I also head to the South west and Herefordshire regularly. I can box up for posting, but you will need to organise your own courier. I am open to trades on 112 bass cabs. Epifani UL 212 - £350. Not £480! it is in near perfect condition and has a beautiful tone. Lovely deep lows and huge amounts of power. It can sit nicely between the vintage and the hifi sounds when on completely flat response on the EQ. I don't want to sell it, but it is far bigger and more powerful than I need, really needs to be gigged properly and played by a decent player! Pubs and so on won't do this sucker justice and neither will my limited capability. The Epifani is 4 ohms and 700 watts - front ported, weights ~23kg.   27. Up for sale is a Barefaced Four 10 cab. In good condition, as per pictures. Complete with original cover. Currently £1049 to buy with the cover new. Fantastic cabs! A slight gap on where the tolex joins on the rear of the cab. Can be quite common on these cabs seen it on many. Based near Yeovil in Somerset. Looking for £725.

  28. Certainly agree with that - it's just having the available funds at any given moment......we've all been there, I guess. However, as proof positive of my appreciation of ACG basses, here's a picture from the Sunday of this year's London Bass Guitar show; Alan is the guy on the left, holding his very nice bass and wearing an "It's gonna be a long day" expression; as some muppet next to him prepares to inflict ham-fisted torture on said nice bass. Second photo is the bass upon which I carried out said muppetry. AND it was absolutely wonderful. Comfortable to play, all the sounds that you'd want - what's not to love?

  30. I used to run a true bi-amp set up when it was part of my multi effects (Peavey Bassfex). It allowed me to put all the effects that suck the presence out of the bottom end on the just on the high part of the signal. This fed into a 350 + 350 watt power amp with the upper frequencies going to a home made 2 x 8 cab (based on my favourite guitar combo) and the low frequencies to a standard 1 x 15 bass cab. I did however mean that in order to get proper FoH representation of my sound I needed to have two DIs on the bass rig.

  31. I agree, @Marcoelwray, I don't like the really shiney finish some people get when finishing Warwicks with lacquer. But, I too have worked on a few Warwicks and I'd say the finish that @dyerseve has is about the same finish as I've had. I sand to about 1500 grit and use Boiled Linseed Oil, which I wipe off and buff up, then use beeswax to finish. I don't get a gloss finish, but there is a silk-sheen to some of them. The actual finish is dependent on the type of wood. Ash stays very matt, yet Bubinga, Maple and Ovangkol get a bit of a sheen.

  32. The "best" sound I ever got was through the first amp I ever owned. It was a 60 watt valve amp and a 412 cab. I sounded so good I couldn't believe my bass (and me) could sound like that. That was it, no turning back. I have no idea if I actually sounded good or not but I thought I did to the point that I knew I'd be a bass player for the rest of my life.

  35. They should have labeld the "compression" knob Gain on that orange amp imo....... because to me that's exactly what is sounds like it does. It certainly doesn't need a gain knob

  39. I bought a cheapo one for a fender jazz bass and I gaurantee no-one would've told the difference. It's probably worth keeping the old one though for resale purposes.

I’m no expert but if you imagine a port is shaped differently for each speaker cabinet be it PA, home audio - it’s there because when a sine wave is fed through it there’s likely to be a point where everything goes mental and it’s a bit like our ‘brown note’ (allegedly)

  42. You’ll want a “stereo” jack socket (or TRS) which is the type you have on your bass. (Which suggests you have active electronics on board as the third pin helps to complete a circuit and essentially switch the circuit on). The type you have received is a mono socket (TS) which would be used on passive instruments such as a standard precision bass.

  44. Every now and then you get a real standout gig. Last night we played the MK11 club - we got the gig after a successful support gig to the Sugar Hill Gang earlier in the year. This time we were the headline act and did a two hour set - the house was packed, great house PA and light show. Depping on drums for us was our old mate, Stuart Russell (Drizabone) - who kept the joint jumping to some excellent four to the floor. The clip below shows a flavour of how we went down - it was like this all night. The venue were well pleased and we're due back at a later date.

  45. Amps do have voicing, which is a specific frequency response. It can be changed, if you're an expert. If you're not you're about two years away from acquiring the necessary skills at an engineering school. That level of expertise would make going from a single tone control to a 3 band EQ an easy task. Without that expertise, no way.

It’s not a stupid question at all, because lots of the notes are played on the offbeat ,that’s what gives the Bassline a different feel , you will also play pickup notes which are notes before the 1 if you are counting 1,2,3,4 . A good tune to practice getting the timing is Stir it up , Bob Marley . IMO Robbie Shakespeare is one of the best reggae bass players ever 😀. Also on YouTube Alain m has some great basslines
