  1. Small update - frets have been levelled and recrowned. I think the neck did need it, the fret material didn't come off universally so I hope i made an improvement. Also, French polish arrived from @kodiakblair - legend, cheers!

  2. I have been delaying posting this because I was hoping to include photos but none have surfaced so far... Weird gig at the weekend. We played the Newark Festival, which I was disappointed to find was not the big "rock" event on Newark Showground happening on the same day, but a series of gigs spread around several pubs in the town. We were down to play early evening at The Castle & Falcon and due to our synth player being somewhat under the weather we arrived just as the band before us were finishing. Surprised to find that the actual stage was outdoors in the pub courtyard, which hadn't been mentioned at any point when we were being booked. I'm never quite sure of the effectiveness of these events for us since we're not a "conventional" band, and in the past some of the similar gigs we have played have been more than a bit "meh". However this was one of those exceptions. The audience seemed to be really up for our set of "melancholy bangers" and even more surprisingly we sold several T-shirts and CDs including a couple that we had the sign. Compare that to our previous gig where we were playing to our core audience and we sold just one T-shirt. Bit of a break now until the end of September which will give us a chance to work on some new material and recording for the album.

  4. Earliest would be these ones on me playing in a university rock opera in about 1988 - party scene where we roped in audience members. Still got and play that Aria SB700. Most recent would be this one of me with my new Sandberg at a jam night a couple of months back…

  5. For the last few years I've played in a church band and it really was ideal for me: * 10am rehearsal, before the gig at 11am, home in time for lunch, no loading in the dark * large car park close to the back door for unloading * nice people, no drunks * free coffee and biscuits * fabulous acoustics 🙂

  8. I believe I went on later to clarify my answer once I had a better grasp of how that all worked. It turns out that an OTA compressor like Single Slice and The Watt are a "compressor-sustainer" and not a "compressor-limiter", so there isn't a set gain reduction ratio like there would be on a typical compressor-limiter. OTA compressors don't compress in a linear way like that, so it's not really something you can put a number on. Also glad to see people are excited for the new pedal I'm hoping to have stock built up for it by the end of September. I was originally planning to hold off on announcing it until it was ready to go, but I didn't tell Mike that, and he was excited after gig-testing it (which is always a good sign) and wanted to tell everyone.

  9. Ok, a quick update to the situation. Thanks everyone for their feedback on Elrick basses. It seems that in the middle of July I accidentaly bought the one from The Gallery 😮 I know, I know, I should be more careful 🤣 So 6 weeks, a few gigs and multiple rehearsals later on I'm quite happy with my little accident! Its light, plays well, balances and works in pop / funk / soul / classic rock scenarios. It may not look as "rock" as a P-bass but really DILLIGAF? Sound wise its got a great, well defined finger style sound but is a little less top end snappy than I usually have but this has taught me a new trick......turn the treble up more....sorted! 🤣 My guess is the Bartolinis are more subdued in the top end and a change to Nordys would help but I'm in no rush to change as I have other basses that can cover that area. Not sure what the strings are on it or how old so when I do change them for a set I know the sound of that might solve the "problem". Picture from the Gallery website:

  10. You've also got to bear in mind, modern amps and cabs can make any bass with flats sound different to the olden days when valves and boomy cabs were the only option. There's an awful lot of hi-fi bass rigs about nowadays that can give a much more precise and detailed version of the flatwounds sound. That clarity, power and punch can negate some of the reasons why bassists ditched those strings in favour of roundwounds.

  11. I had the same suspicion about @Yorkielanc - joined up, made a single post, and his last visit was the day after his post. @Merton,you will see that I even hinted at that oddness, in my reply to the new member: "...welcome to basschat.co.uk - I am honoured that your first post was in reply to my question!" So, you are not cynical, but healthily curious. Either that, or we are both cynical...

  14. I just got back from a first session with a new rock and blues type band. We are all middle aged and up. The lady time I played bass in a band, the bass was by my knees, but now it's past my waist. I'm old....😩 I played a Sire V5 through a tech 21 VT Bass 500 head into an Orange OBC 115. Really nice sounding, but not a lot of projection at floor level. I might switch out for a TC Electronic k 212 (also a lot lighter). The material was pretty much all new to me; my background is punk and metal but I really miss playing. Some of the stuff had been really difficult to learn , and I need to work on my charting. I'm not sure if this will last, but I'm giving it a few practices to see if it gels.

  15. One and only price drop to £1500 I took this in a trade recently but as I already have one this is up for sale This bass is from 2004 and is in excellent condition. It has the 10/90 neck with the most beautiful flame maple. The neck is very thin and the fretwork is excellent. The body has an ash core with really thick flame maple caps, front and back. Bass is all original with no issues. Kahler bridge, Schaller machine heads and Benedetti single coil pickups Vigier 18v preamp. It comes in a semi-hard case which will protect in transit Weight is 3.7kgs Just recently strung with Ernie Ball's 45-105 May trade for a nice Fender Precision with cash my way unless its Vintage Postage is included in the price, no trades and asking price is firm

  17. My band is losing our spacious garden studio (our friend who owns it is moving house soon), and we’ll need to fit into a much smaller garden studio when that happens. I needed something which could still keep up with our drummer but with a tiny footprint and here it is - Laney Digbeth 200h paired with a Warwick Gnome 210. Whole thing is just 305mm wide and is very loud. Not the highest quality speaker but definitely good enough for rehearsals.

  21. Having done dome rapid research, f-holes work better than round holes az the airflow is (non-intuitively) proportional to the perimeter, not the area (because air velocity is higher the narrower the hole).

  23. I'm happy with the main stuff - instruments, amps, cabs etc - that I've had for probably 10 years, and I've enough plectrums, strings etc to see me out I reckon. So unless a new battery for a clip-on tuner counts...I'm still in.

  24. Cheers Phil. It has been a bit of a stressfull couple of days. I should have a Bugera VeyronM coming today. I might have been able to afford something a bit more if I'd got an instant refund on the Ashdown. Hopefully it'll be fine. They've got a decent reputation. When I've got a refund I might buy the DeltaBass, I'm quite taken with it. It looks pretty 😎 😁

  32. In the UK there are hardly any pubs or bars that charge on the door, especially for cover bands. People just won't pay for it. They will (to an extent) happily pay inflated bar prices though. I guess it's a psychological thing: paying for "nothing" vs. buying a slightly more expensive beer. That's my view playing in a covers band anyway.

  33. I wish I had something to contribute to this thread. The fact is we don't rehearse. I wish we did. We play around 65 gigs annually and easily have 4 hours of material. I'm not sure why we don't rehearse. I come from a different background than my bandmates. My background is based in rehearsals and exchanging ideas. This seems foreign to my bandmates. Anyone else here who's band doesn't rehearse ? Daryl

  34. *THIS BASS IS NOW SOLD* Thanks for your interest. For Sale / Trade 2019 Fender Flea Signature Road Worn Jazz in faded Shell Pink. You already know how good these are - they have the same Pure Vintage 64 Pickups as the American Vintage & the American Original series Jazzes. This one has a couple of additions from a previous owner - a Leo Quan BadAss II Bridge and a micro switch for Parallel/Series switching. Series mode gives it more of a P-alike shove. It's a great sounding bass and I'll throw in one of the new Fender triangular padded Gig Bags. Oh, and it has brand new genuine Fender Road Worn Strap Buttons. The previous metallic red locking ones really had to go! Obviously this is a Road Worn bass, so a bunch of Mexicans at the Ensenada plant have more than likely kicked the body around a shale carpark during their lunch break, but condition is exactly as you'd expect - rather like a nicely worn in '61 Jazz, which is what it's apparently trying to be. No flaky bits of faded Shell Pink have fallen off while it's been in my tenure, anyway. Potential buyers are welcome to come and try the bass whether they end up buying it or not. There's always Tea/Coffee and maybe biscuits. Price is £900. Interesting trades considered. Buyer to collect, or I will happily meet up half way at a distance of up to 100 miles (200 miles total distance!) from DE7. Thank you for your attention.

  37. Fight all of them in a massive brawl, use as many weapons as is possible, I'd suggest swinging a ship's anchor around your head for maximum damage. Once everyone is sufficiently subdued tell them all it's their fault and that you're now going to take all their belongings and burn them in a giant fire followed by creating a commune where you are the leader and their families now live under your leadership. Or... just tell them honestly how you feel!

  39. Ok this was for a project but I no longer need it. This is a brand new Allparts Jazz neck, never installed of used. Since purchasing I have added a Fender Logo supplied by Rothko & Frost and a bone nut. The frets have been dressed, fretboard oiled and it's in beautiful condition. David Wilson then completely finished the neck in lacquer with a lovely tint on the face, his work is outstanding. In total this neck owes me about £600 ish so offering it out at £450 including UK delivery. Open to offers and potential trades HX Stomp, Radial JDI, Bassrig… let me know

  40. A 1986 Hohner B2A that has had some recent TLC and glow up. It's had a set up, fret polish, Monty's Montypresso on the fingerboard, new Status Hotwire double ball end strings, a new battery, a new cover for the damaged battery box so that it looks neat and keeps the battery in there. Lots of new screws all over too so it looks a bit fresher. The bridge has been stripped down and cleaned and lubricated. All the pots hve been cleaned and electrics checked. It works as it should and sounds huge. The pickups are the original in-house Hohner and a bit fuller than the later Select by EMG variants that were introduced in 1987 models. The pickup mounts are quirky as they have 3 screws and springs and you'll see two at the top, one at the bottom. It's a good clean example of a B2A. Out of all 5 I've "rescued", this one is the tidiest. It plays and sounds great. It comes with an ancient flight case that I consider to be just very robudrive-download-20250703T133312Z-1-001.zip I have proper cardboard and bubble wrap packaging and can Parcelforce for about GBP19 but would prefer collection. I'll get an exact price for insured shipping when I know where it's going. Check out 18 years of positive feedback on Basschat.

  41. Yes, that's what I have. It provides a check of each plug and tells you if it's correctly wired and grounded or not. I'm no electrician (and the guys who put in the cabling also have an RCD) but I do it every venue I go to now to ensure me and my equipment will be OK. One of the singers in my band got a shock one gig and we ended it early as we had no faith in the safety of the venue. After that, I didn't want to take any risks.

  43. I owned the Bugera Veyron M for some time, and really liked it sound wise, but the fan was a bit on the noisy side for me, so it went to a friend who plays really loud as it was not an issue for him. Otherwise I would have kept it and would have simply put a Noctua fan in it. Good choice, really.

  45. But Pastorius obviously never got good enough to graduate to a 5 string! 😁 And on the drums thing, I've played with too many drummers who have more than 3 toms, plus another 4 cymbals. It takes 'em ages to set up and it takes up most of the stage (unless you're in a proper sized venue). I could forgive said drummers if didn't then bash every one of those drums as hard as they could without listening to how they fit in with the band, and especially by tw@tting the ride cymbal constantly giving just an unpleasant wash of high frequency that obscures just about everything else... If they could just do the groove thing with the snare, hi-hat and bass drum we'd all be much happier. And funkier!

  48. Hi @Papabull I must admit I smiled when I saw your thread title. It really is one of those how long is a piece of string topics, and is a very deep and dark rabbit hole to fall down. Personally, I didn't use compression for about 30 years, then came on here and decided that I should. I then spent a fortune on various boutique compressors before eschewing compression altogether. Currently though, my amp is an Orange LBT, which has a bloody great compressor built into it, so compression is now very much baked into my sound. I'd very much recommend having a look at https://ovnilab.com/faq.shtml as I found it an invaluable resource. Enjoy the journey and try not to bankrupt yourself! 🙂

  49. All done. All in, an hour or so to sort out (I needed to work inside the bass too). Neck pocket needed a little bit of sanding...there was a bit of finish gunk in there from 45 years ago. Fitted a new set of Wilkinson machine heads. Didn't need any real set up, intonation/action is fine. Noticeably Jazz Bass in profile (like my old Geddy. I may sand the back of the neck in a few months (it still smells very new). Genuinely surprised and impressed. Shipping was quick and I didn't pay anything on top. All in it was under £82.00. I've always liked a dark fingerboard with block inlays. My first bass (Columbus Jazz copy) had this and I suppose I've always had a soft spot for this set up. In closing, yes it was supplied with a late '60s, early '70s Fender logo on it. It's the first time I've ever had an instrument with a fake logo on it. If you don't like it go and have a coffee and relax.
